What's preventing you from playing FM20?

For me, it's one of my best runs ever on FM19:

Just over a year now without defeat (and counting)!

With respect to the past I read more positive reviews on the game. I’ve seen the great effort made by SI in releasing more hotfix during the week.

I think I will wait the usual Dec. patch when most issues are solved.

i usually like start one long career game and follow with it.

Work, commute, family - the usual stuff.

I get a few hours in during the week, play a lot on Saturday, and then do the real thing on Sunday - as I coach an u-15's team.

At the moment for me it's some of the bugs issues I'd experienced.  I put quite some time into a long term save but the penalty issue in particular was causing me to lose games, it would kind of take away the enjoyment cause was getting games with 2 or 3 penalties against and losing matches I should have won due to the bug.  Now feels like I'm up against it in that save so am hesitant to put the time in again if there's still issues that will effect the long term aspect of it.

Lack of fun in FM. I've tried the demo and it seems like the most boring match engine in history. I'm not saying that the game is bad I just miss older FM's that were not realistic, but they were fun. For example you buy Daniel Bierofka in FM 2005 for 300k and he would destroy everyone in  engine where dribling was everything. Or insane long shot goals from Recoba. Or young Marco Verratti and his insane killer balls. Each game had something overpowered and that was fun, you knew what players to look for. ( yeah, we had overpowered crossing in recent years but that is not fun )

Ofcourse, game is more advanced now, nicer, more realistic and so on but for me, it lacks the most important thing - fun.

Honestly after playing the beta and being massively underwhelmed at the match engine my motivation to play has gone down to zero. Along with the determination bug that meant there was no point in starting a save TIL it was fixed

The ME is a joke thanks to terrible shooting. Almost every highlight involves someone hitting the side netting because they shot from a ridiculous angle. What's the point in having a 2 week BETA if something as blindingly obvious as this isn't fixed? And how did it even get through testing prior to the beta?

Match engine, players AI and lack of realism in terms of tactics and player movement.

I really hope for a much bigger leap before I commit another xxx hours of my life into the game.

But it's fixed...

I see a lot of people quoting the match engine as a reason, but no one ever expands on why. For me, this is the best match engine ever, in an ever evolving build. The first big patch in beta made it even better. Some of the football I've seen in my saves is the best I've seen in FM.

Everyone is welcome to an opinion, but so few say more than the ME is poor.

Yes it’s patched now but it’s just one of many issues for me

But it's not an issue anymore, so why mention it?

on the match engine, for me I want realism. I honestly would happily lose 3-0 every game than win all the time but I need to see an accurate representation of football and for me this match engine is no where near that. The absolute lack of central low percentage passes. The ai being hard coded to always pass to someone in space even if it contradicts all tactics.

The way that pressing is implemented on this game is an absolute joke. Pressing on fm 20 = players running straight At ball carrier with intensity being how many headless chickens you want sprinting at the ball

I have tested out various tactics and even when I set my players to pass it MUCH shorter, play out of defence and experimented with individual tactics but STILL my cbs will just hoof the ball up the pitch to no one it absolutely kills me

for me it’s not 1 issue it’s just multiple that lead to this match engine being unfit for purpose.

I will never admit to being a tactical expert, but I see realism, or as close as a simulation can get.

With regards to low percentage passes, the truth is I see this in many matches in which my team plays, and I'm the manager of lowly Bangor City. Do you have the players with the creativity or flair to pull this off? How is the positioning of your receiving players? I'm sure there still needs to be a possibility of that low percentage pass of reaching its target for a player to try. Do you have partnerships between your players that will develop the understanding to try these passes more and more?

Pressing I do find to be problematic from time to time. I see occaisons of too many players closing down one opponent. For some matches, however, I would argue that is necessary. To close down a tricky opponent, for example. Who is making your on field tactical decision in a match, you or your assistant?

Just chucking in a tactic without your players becoming efficient at that tactic is not going to produce instant results. Have you given your squad enough time to adapt to what you want? What level are you trying this at? I would also argue that constantly changing tactics can cause confusion between players, or at least a lack of consistency. Regarding center backs, if they are set to defensive then they will hoof it in a pressed situation. Would you rather they play intricate little balls at all times and give the ball away? I watch Bournemouth regularly and their center backs will play out from the back when in possession, but if needs must then Steve Cook will hoof the ball up the pitch or out for a throw.

I did notice a big difference in the match engine after the first big beta patch. Prior to this patch my team were constantly playing wide balls, often from one side of the pitch to the other. After the patch my IF/wingers were linking up well with my full backs and this resulted in some excellent build up play. In addition to this, the link up with my central midfield improved. In trying to play a short passing game, my CMs would pass the ball between themselves, waiting for space to appear for my wide players. They'd then get the ball out wide and pile in to the box. It was beautiful. And, again, this is Bangor.

show me another simulation game that’s gets the fundamentals of what it’s simming so wrong plz

Games are what you make of them, and much of that is defined by input. I believe SI do a good job of attempting to make a simulation as realistic as possible. Is it perfect? Probably not.

Can I ask why you haven't bugged anything you have mentioned? SI can't change what you think is a problem unless you bug it. I looked through your post history. I see some comments in the tactics forums, and that is a good idea as it may be that you are giving the wrong instructions, but I saw not one post in the bug reports. If you believe strongly that parts of the match engine are broken then report them with examples and saves. It's by far the best way to make the game better. Replying to feedback topics is all well and good, and gets your thoughts across, but it doesn't provide examples for SI to use. Saying things like "this is a bug 100%" may well represent your feelings, but it doesn't provide SI opportunities to fix things.

I'd urge you to give the game a chance. The change before and after a patch, that I mentioned above, is proof that SI work to make things better.

But...back to the thread. Criticism is great...when it's constructive.

On the bug reports, I am honestly too lazy to upload the pkms? I will agree with you there. Honestly that is probably my fault as I’ve just been so used to games where the devs don’t take notice and I will say that fm for all it’s faults has a brilliant community team who are actually good at clarification

re the tactical changing around, I usually have 2 systems which I play but I made a new save specifically to test out how much you can mould your team not to hoof the ball even if it was detrimental I just wanted to have control

It's not perfect, and it takes work. I was lucky with Bangor City, I will happily admit, I had no idea of the quality of the team in game when I decided to start a save with them. I picked a system based on the team and it worked well. Combined with the quality of my team we romped the division. Next season, in the Welsh Premier, will surely be a new story.

But yes, getting FM to work how you want it to does take work. Keep using the tactics forum and perfecting the tactics. Remember, too, that sometimes you may not have the players to make what you want work. When that happens you have to improvise.

I will urge you again to use the bugs forum. If you can take time to comment that FM is not perfect then don't be too lazy to upload a .pkm. The current upload system makes it so easy. You just drag a file to the upload box. Make a file copy, rename it to something useful, then write a brief summary of what you feel is wrong (there is a template on the forums) and add the file to the upload site. You will be helping.

Work, Kids .... but more significantly my Laptop performance. I’ve always found I struggle to fully enjoy FM when im not getting a good performance from my hardware. Ive tried to fine tune my HP Pavilion dv6 as much as my knowledge allows but its just too laggy when switching around the different screens, and thats will running 2DClassic on the match view also ... just kills the fun for me very sadly :(

During the day kids

During the night work

Although I get about an hour at work on breaks. And as I'm alone its bliss.

Never even think about turning it on during the day.

However, I'm really struggling to come up with a long term save. With Touch (PC).

Had a great save on FMC during the beta but since all the updates, FMC don't run very good. Don't really feel like doing Bolton save again until the Xmas patch.

Playing a save with NK Kustojise in Croatia ATM, might stick with it but think I will change... Strikers couldn't hit the floor if they fell on it. 24 shots 3 on target average, usually lose 1-0 or draw 0-0. I lowered the tempo, seems to improved hitting the target, still need the goals though.

Starting to prefer touch now, so that'll stop me playing FMC

Interesting. I was made redundant a couple of years ago and had six months off work (just after FM was released in November, paid, lovely 😊) and considered writing something... but played FM instead 🤪

What are you thinking of writing?

The ME is so disappointing for me - shooting from angles (raised by so many) is painfully repetitive. The behaviour of defenders is shocking at times (defending and attacking); especially if there is space for attacking players to run in to - the defenders do not track across and fill the space allowing a free run for 40 yards and shot. Goals seem to be extremely high across AI games as well as my own.

The rest of the game I really like, but ME is ruining the immersion for me and I've taken a step away to see if it pulls me in again.

Good luck to you. I've always loved writing, and really should do something like that. I tend to put my writing towards adding to the careers forum though, such is my gaming addiction.

For me it's time mostly: full time job, additional studies, working on starting a business and then there is FM not having a quick sim option that I can use on some matches using my tactics and lineups (other than go on holiday which gives all credit + stats to the assistant). FM touch is not even close to being the same game.
I usually start unemployed and try to go up through the leagues on a year long save but that's probably not going to happen this year
