FM 2020 Mobile - Initial thoughts and general feedback thread

Yeah the star rating is very much impacted by form - as in real-life the perception of a player is biased by how they're performing in the 'here and now' ... if a striker goes on a barren spell for 4-5 matches then pundits start asking if he's past it rather than realizing he's just been unlucky etc.

This is entirely intentional and is intended to (1) be realistic, (2) mean that you have to use your own judgement to cut through the opinions and ultimately decide what YOU think as a manager .

PS - Glad you're enjoying the game :D

Good to hear it's working as intended, it's a bit different from how I've experienced it in regular FM but I definitely like it!

An idea would be to keep the potential star rating maybe a little bit less dependant on form since we know the ability has been there once, maybe there is potential for it to return. Just a thought :)

Thanks for a great game.

Yeah we're two seperate teams and my approach may differ from theirs in some aspects ... quite commonly neither is better/worse ... they're just different as the aims for our products are slightly disparate (I want FMM to be more accessible and entertaining while realistic ... where as full-fat FM is a hard-core simulation).

Thanks for a great game.

I'm glad someone has brought this up as it has bugged me for a while now.

Marc, appreciate the feedback and I agree with the logic that performances should impact player ratings. However I think it's too heavy handed as it stands and any changes need to be felt over a longer period of time.

When you consider that there are only 10 possible grades a player can get, and the quality of player that represents the two extremes of the scale, the example that Karnack gives of Benassi dropping two whole stars (4 grades out of 10!) after just 6 games is way too much of an impact, too soon, I think.

To put it in a real-life context, Dele Alli goes through spells where he does little for 6 games, but if this grading was applied to him IRL he'd drop half a star, maybe one star at a push.

Another thing that needs addressing is how heavily sub appearances affect a player's star rating.

Just the other day I signed a promising youngster to gradually replace an older, established player. He wasn't quite as good as my older player yet, so I spent the next few months mostly bringing him off the bench to ease him in but due to a succession of 6 match ratings his star rating has dropped like a stone. So I'm probably going to end up selling him now.

I think this whole thing needs reviewing so a) the way performances influence star ratings is felt over a longer period of time and b) match ratings from sub appearances do not have any impact on star rating, or only if the player comes on before the 60th minute, for example.

PS: Also agree with Karnack's later point that the potential star rating should not be so heavily affected by short-term performances. Real life example is Moise Kean. He probably had 4.5/5* potential when he moved from Juve to Everton. He has struggled in the PL but even now his real-life potential should still be at least 4*. In FMM it would have dropped to  3* within a few months.

I don't know if Moise Keane should be 4* presently - the way I've heard pundits and (some) Everton supporters talking about him I think 3* is fair enough tbh ... in general the public are incredibly harsh on players when they perform badly or don't settle in at a club. Look back at some of the great players who have 'busted out' from the Premiership and been dismissed as awful signings ... only to go on elsewhere and suddenly recover form.

Memphis Depay
Mohamed Salah (most people forget he was with Mourinho at Chelsea where he failed to impress and was loaned out)
Diego Forlan
..
etc.

This is obviously something which is down to individual interpretation however and I'll keep listening to the feedback in this area, if everyone agrees with you I'll tighten it up a little more than it is presently (but I don't want it to be 'that' accurate that it removes having to utilise your own judgement).

Of course, I understand. Like I said, I think the logic is sound, but the impact can be a bit heavy handed at times. I'd be interested to hear other people's thoughts though.

I thought I would share some additional feedback on FMM20 now that I have progressed further into my career.

I am enjoying the game and there are a lot of feature in this year's version that I really like. The positives outweigh the negatives and I'm enjoying it more than FMM19. However, I do still find the game too easy. I won't get into the fine details as most of you will have read my points on this before. However, I will make the following observations:

  • Squad building is too easy. I have no trouble signing the players I want OR I find it too easy to search for quality players at reasonable transfer values OR the players I sign often gel quickly and make an immediate impact (I rarely have a 'Roberto Soldado' or a 'Vincent Janssen').
  • The AI on the other hand does not seem quite as proficient in signing the right players to improve their teams and offer a serious challenge to my dominance.
  • It is too easy to generate funds that give you the financial clout to outmuscle your rivals. I find it easy to offer unwanted players to clubs for values that far exceed their true worth. I often double my transfer budget each season. I also think the transfer budgets at some clubs are on the generous side.

Because I find it easy to build quality squads (and because the AI is unable to do this itself), it doesn't take long for me to start dominating the game.

The other point I want to make about the difficulty level is this; I have built an excellent first XI at RB Leipzig, and with this first XI I have won the Bundesliga (with 8 games to spare), sit 24 points clear of 2nd place (with six games to go), have reached the semi-final of the Champions League, and have reached the final of the DFB Pokal Cup. I decide to give the majority of my first XI a break (to rest them for the Champions League) and play my 2nd XI for the remaining Bundesliga games and Pokal Cup games. By my reckoning, this would give the AI a better chance at beating me as I'm not selecting my best players. However, I'm still churning out comfortable victories. I'm going to places like Bayern and winning comfortably 2-0. I don't think this should be happening. But if its the case that my 2nd XI is incredibly strong (and is better than most teams in the Bundesliga), then it kinda reinforces my point about squad building being too easy.

Agreed 100%. My first season in MLS was really challenging and enjoyable. Every game I had to sweat to get at least a draw. Now in my second season and right off the bat I'm dominating MLS. Even with my second XI wins come so easily. I wonder what's causing this? It does remind me of the good old days with CM 01/02 but I don't think that's what I'm looking for anymore...

I started my career with Southampton and selected to play with transfer budgets disabled (so I didn't have any money to spend at the beginning of the season). I finished 15th which is unheard of for me. But I was really encouraged by this as its a pretty realistic outcome for the club. However, next season, with a substantial transfer budget to play with, the game becomes much easier because the ease of signing quality players has such an impact on the game.

I think AI clubs are too willing to sell their players. When I look to improve my team, I either sign the best players from lower reputation clubs or good squad players from higher reputation clubs. In the first instance, the lower reputation club should do everything in their power to prevent their best players from leaving. In the second situation, the player himself should be more reluctant to join a club that would be seen as a step-down. This does happen in the game but probably not often enough.

I look at my career with RB Leipzig and I managed to sign two world class players for under £60M each (Dele Alli, Bruno Fernandes). The selling clubs should have held out for much more money and the players's demands were very, very reasonable. I can't remember what my transfer budget was that season but it was incredibly generous given who I was managing - and the ability to offload players for generous transfer fees meant that I had vast sums of money to splash on players when needed.

Maybe a review of how transfers work and a review of how transfer / wage budgets are allocated would go someway to rectifying this?

I’ve been playing FM for a few years now and always buy Touch and Mobile to use on my iPad and find this years version of FMM more enjoyable than FMT. The UI on FMM on my iPad is so responsive and much easier to navigate around than Touch. I’m probably classed as an older player and the old eye sight is not what it was so the bigger on-screen ‘buttons’ and general display suits me better these days. I love this version of the game and I hope you continue to release it for tablets as well as phones.

Long shots here, long shots there, long shots every effinwhere...

Seriously, I'm so sick of conceding long shots. Adding a dmc? Didn't help. High defensive line? Long balls over the top. Low defensive line? Long shots. Hard tackling? Free kicks and, you guessed it, long shots. Urgent pressing? Beaten by through balls.

This game is impossible! "too easy" my...

Rant over.

I'll flag that as a bug - you don't happen to have the pkm do you (as it'll make it easy to track down, we detect 'color clashes' in kits and for some reason that one appears to be escaping us ..

Same ás @Footix, those 30 yard screamers are perhaps too often... replacing the goalies doesn’t really do the trick either.

@Marc VaughanHow do I do that?

Some screamers will and do happen - you can limit them by keeping players under pressure near the edge of the box, the easiest way to this is to play a tactical style which isn't overly attacking and especially using a DMC.

I’ve actually found this years harder.

found it difficult to find a successful tactic with an excellent squad I have built up, world class players struggling to get over an average of 7.0 whilst scraping out victories

cant seem to solve “wasteful goalkeeper distribution” and “poor use of width” feedback either ..

Ok, the star rating thing... I didn't realise that was the case..!

Feel a bit silly now!

Weirdly, I struggled a lot with Newport, so much so I got sacked after 3 months. I became a bit of a journeyman, and ended up at STM Sports where I've found it a lot easier - I guess that's football, no manager always struggles (usually!)

@Alari Naylor, am I being daft? Is it possible to bring a player in on trial in FM20 mobile? I can't seem to find the option...

Trials aren't present in FMM at the moment.

I’ve got to say well done to the team involved in making this years version of FMM - its so good that I wouldn’t want that much to change for the next version. Maybe ‘edit player instructions’ would be the only thing I’d want added. Just to fine tune certain things if the player wants to go that bit deeper into the tactic. But then again, it’s meant to be a quicker game to pick up and play so maybe not!

Just one very minor thing I’ve come across that needs a fix is the shirt numbers here on this screen shot I’ll try and upload here:

I have chosen Stuttgart, a new transferred player Wamangituka wants to leave the club to join a bigger club just after played 2 matches. Why does a new transferred player wants to leave the club in 2 matches?

Is a larger club interested in him? - if he's been tapped up then it is possible for that to occur ... its rare, but ...

Hi Marc

Have you got an option to control the reserves on the list? Would love this.

If not, could we at least make the reserves formation and style mimic the first team? IE stripping out the benefits of ‘playing the match’, but the assistant places his best options available in the formation he’s given?

Great way to nurture your crop!

Cheers

Has there been an increase in the size of the players and ball for the enhanced match engine? Having played a few games since installing the update, I’m finding the proportions odd for the pitch size. The players and the ball seems large for the pitch and goal nets seem small in comparison.

I got the ‘Budgets in First Window’ unticked, yet can still sign free players. Is it supposed to be like this?

Makes no sense to me, but thanks.

Budgets is a transfer budget, signings from free-transfers is allowed because I wanted to make sure that if a team had only two keepers and in freak circumstances both were injured you'd be able to potentially sign a stop-gap keeper etc.

The idea of that flag is so you can play the season using the 'real' teams from the current date, not to make things rigid and unplayable.

(basically I'm mean but not THAT mean ;)

Hi all,

Three points of feedback having played the game for a season and a half:

1. Tottenham Hotspurs stadium attendance has a typo

2. There is a disproportionate number of goals in the game. I just had a gameweek where six matches ended with a scoreline of 4-0 or greater. You might expect one or two but six is just unrealistic.

3. There is no notification of the opening/closure of the summer transfer window between season one and two. Can't comment beyond that as I haven't reached it yet.

Hi - thanks for the feedback, the first issue (spurs attendance) should be fixed in the latest update. The goals per game is generally right there are 'freak' weekends where you will get lots of high scoring matches and others where they will be low scoring ... this happens now and then in real-life also. There was a real-life weekend where 40 goals were scores - so an average of 4 goals per match.

40 Goals during a single weekend

The final issue you mention, I haven't heard of before - would you mind indicating the league you're using and checking whether you have transfer windows disabled or any other of the more exotic options turned on?

It is the best game of this type available. That being said here are the problems i have with the game.

For years I always start my first game as Liverpool and then later on try other teams and fast loose the will to play because of few things every year.

1. Within 2 and half seasons playing as Liverpool i won all that can possibly be won. Now Liverpool is a good club and that is not imposible but in my second season i was able to buy Pogba, Bastoni, De Light, Sancho etc. That made me the most dominant club in the world. It is totaly unrealistic. What more in that time Man City both only a striker a 2 star striker for 10 mil that is not good even for Blue Square North. The AI of other teams is waaaay low and it is so easy to make a total dominance team within 2 or max 3 seasons.

2. I try my second game as AZ in Holland. No transfers no nothing and won Eredivisie with ease. In my second season i buy just 2 players and manage to win the title 8 games still to go.

3. Why cant we have the option that training can be set by assist coach but that we can tweak some player that we want. I loose hours and hours of time in a season with setting the training.

4. Why we are limited by game and dont have option to have coaches of all types. It is funny that i must choose with super big club and not be able to have at least 1 coach of every specialisation.

5. Am i missing something or when creating a new manager i cant set my faw tactic its always 4-4-2 for me.

6. It is very easy with every club that within 2 or max 3 seasons i build up training and youth facilities to max.

7.

I read in answers before that you dont want to make terminator teams for Barcelona etc but lets face it clubs like that are terminators and its not very funny to play a game in which i take FC Ibiza or club like that and within 5 season i am demolishing Barcelona or Real Madrid and wining titles and champion leagues. Or making FC Halifax the best club in the world within 6-8 years.

I will try a lowest league save in England now and make a rule i can only sign UK and Ireland players and see if i can like in FMM19 and FMM18 become Champion and win Champions league within 7 to 8 seasons.

Final verdict :)

PLEASE MAKE THE GAME MORE AND I REALLY MEAN MORE HARDER.  I loose the will to play any league and any team after 3 seasons.

The AI is not very good at replacing star players and accumulating talent to ensure that it remains competitive. I usually find that when i'm passed five seasons, rival club squads are looking unbalanced and low on quality. Whereas in contrast, it is easy for us, the player, to build up a quality squad and dominate until you get bored and decide to join a different club and effectively start over.

But still a great game.

Oh one more thong of how bad the AI for other clubs is. On my current save in english low league, in first season Liverpool sold Allison to Real Madrid for 159m euros before the season started.... They did not buy another goalkeeper even now in second season lol Adrian is the first choice hahahhaha. They buy 4 strikers but not GK hahah

Oh and within 1 and half year in Real Madrid Allison did not make a singe appearance because Curtois is the first choice

This has been a long-standing issue within the game. I had hoped FMM20 would be better at this.

I would like to see the club board act tougher if you don't meet your season objective. I deliberately set my targets higher to make the game more challenging and if I don't achieve them, I'm often still in the job at the end of the season.

Hi,

Its a fantastic game folks so well done.

The only thing that needs tweaking is with the transfer bidding, every AI team seems to always only want to bid 70% of the value of my player, yet I have to bid over the odds for the AI teams player.

If this could be ironed out with the same bidding theme for both player and AI then this game would be absolutely amazing, I can’t play it like it is :(

More varied bidding is what I mean, as to know I’m only going to get 70% of my players value is a) a huge disadvantage and b) isn’t a replica of real life.

Hope that feedback isn’t too negative, I’m on your side folks just want the game to be fully realistic.

Best regards

I guess you put player on a transfer list that is why it happens. You also need to pay less if you buy player that is on transfer list unless the player is on transfer list by his own demand.

Try this it works for me. The player you want to sell. Dont put it on transfer list. Instead just offer him to clubs for price you think is ok. You will get in news if you put too high price or no (couple of enquiry or no interested) based on that you can lower the price if you put too high. By doing this i manage to sell players for way more then their values.

Has anyone else had an issues with start of fixtures. Not sure it's even an issue, but I started the game with everton and I had to quit and restart. The fixtures were the same. Tried it again and they were the same. They weren't the official fixtures and liverpool played at home the same weekend I do. Are fixtures supposed to be random on each new game?
