When do you get to play the clubs in the relegation zone? Quite the front-loaded schedule you've had.

That's a very good question, @Tajerio. I realised after the Milan game that we hadn't played any of the bottom four yet. Incidentally, Parma have just sacked their manager. Not surprising, really, given they have played 13, lost 13.

20251123_fixtures.thumb.png.be05f8f59bf171fcdeccfc1cc4a60776.png

We play all of the bottom four in our next five Serie A games - Chievo (18th) at home next up, (then 7th-placed Fiorentina away after the home cup-tie against Serie B Perugia), with Parma (20th) at home, SPAL (17th) away and Brescia (19th) at home to follow.

You can say that again. Last season's 1st, 2nd and 4th in our opening three Serie A fixtures was a very difficult start and one point from those three fixtures put us firmly on the back-foot.

I can honestly say this is my most challenging season of the save so far. I'm not used to being the underdog the majority of the time, trying to find a way to stay in games and nick something at the other end.

Hopefully, the Serie A league table will look a lot better for Sampdoria in five games time but the question is how to approach those four games against the bottom four - Parma, Brescia, Chievo and SPAL?

Post-match: Sampdoria 4-2 Parma - Serie A (16)

SA16_Parma_report.thumb.png.cfd83ee8d558e373acee7f699c8a8180.png

Blucerchiati Messaggero: That was a thrilling match and you've now won three in a row, four if you include the Perugia cup-tie. What did you make of it?

Stuniverse: It had everything... didn't it? And for once... we scored plenty goals... four. I thought offensively we did great job... I very pleased for Lawrence Shankland with his... his... his two goals. Our supporters were magnifico... I hope they enjoyed it.

Blucerchiati Messaggero: How worried were you when Parma took the lead?

Stuniverse: Not at all. It early... it their first attack... against run of play... I had every confidence my players... turn it around... and they did. In style.

SA16_Parma_report2.thumb.png.d99bccb54c7eb6291e6f321759a14bd7.png

Blucerchiati Messaggero: Would you agree that Mingardi's red card changed the match?

Stuniverse: No. Look it was terrible tackle... could've broken Alessandro Cortinovis's leg... Mingardi deserve sent-off... but we better side... think we go on and win second-half... even if... 11 v 11.

Blucerchiati Messaggero: Novelli had a torrid time at right-back. Is that why you replaced him at half-time?

Stuniverse: Marco will have better days... he play well for us previous this season... but, si... Marco made mistake first-half for their goal... then he got yellow card... just before break. We decide best take him out... pressure cooker... and experience Chancel Mbemba and Andrea Cistana who came on... help us victory.

SA17_SPAL_report.thumb.png.68b99386014f717e63f834d774feacde.png

Blucerchiati Messaggero: After twice being behind, how did it feel winning it so late like that?

Stuniverse: It was fantastic moment... we not hide our delight... on bench.

Blucerchiati Messaggero: I don't think I've ever seen you as animated.

Stuniverse: Si, I know. Think it show what... fantastic character... and mental strength... this squad players has... to... keep go like that... come from behind two... and win at the death.

SPAL need much credit. They matched up man-for-man with us... stifled us... much better than us. When they score first... we not had attempt on goal. We change system... go more attack... look much better... equalise... press for a second goal... then conceded again through mistake... lose at break.

We felt confident... at half-time... we made two subs... attacked from the restart... and got our reward... ultimately. The players deserve plaudits. 0-1, 1-2... win 3-2. Magnifico.

Blucerchiati Messaggero: And you had your captain to thank. How good was Gianluca Caprari today?

Stuniverse: Gianluca show what great player... great finisher... great leader he is. You know. Funny how... things work out. We didn't think either striker play well... need bring Massimo Bottaro on... decide keep Lawrence Shankland on... as he score two last time against Parma... we all ready sub Gianluca ... when he score great goal... quick redo paperwork... Massimo on for Lawrence... not Gianluca... and our captain score even better second goal... win game for us.

Blucerchiati Messaggero: Will the players be getting some time off for Christmas and the New Year?

Stuniverse: Si. We have week off now... then report back, prepare for Brescia game. Hopfully our supporters enjoy festive season... as we say back home 'Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year'.

Hopefully this time through the tough run you can pick up a few more points. European football seems like a bit of a stretch given the clubs above you, but you're certainly in a solid position to fulfill the board's expectations for this year.

You have that striker from Serie B joining you in January, I remember--do you have your eye on anyone else?

Hopefully, @Tajerio. I’m feeling more comfortable about Sampdoria and Serie A now, than I was at the very start of the season, and the players are responding to the system we’re playing which gives me confidence.

1 hour ago, Tajerio said:

I agree. Although we’re 9th, quite close to the two teams above us, the top six do appear to be pulling away. The Board want mid-table so we look good on that score.

1 hour ago, Tajerio said:

Yes, Bruno Santos. With the Winter Break, Bruno should hopefully be with us and available for our next game. It’s interesting that our goal-shy strikers have stepped it up since that signing was confirmed. Lawrence Shankland scored two against Parma, Gianluca Caprari bagged a brace against SPAL.

1 hour ago, Tajerio said:

I’d love to sign young Karamoko Dembele from Celtic, but he wasn’t interested in the summer and, as a nonEU player, he wouldn’t be eligible until next season even if I could sign him this January.

To be honest, any more incomings depend on whether we sell anybody as we had a budget of £7.2M left, of which £4M went on Bruno Santos and £3M has just gone out for a clause in Alessandro Cortinovis’s deal, a player who was already here when I joined and has been excellent for me so far this season. So we have no money.

Overall, I’m happy with the squad for this season. I think we need more up front and Bruno Santos, I hope, will address that. After that, I’m happy to wait until the end of the season when, hopefully, we’ll be able to attract a higher calibre of player than we were this summer.

Karol Linetty (CM) is the one who could go. Karol wants to play Continental football and I’ve promised him he can leave if a club bids £33M for him. Last time I looked, his value was £27M and nobody was interested in him.

Blucerchiati Messaggero: On the eve of an important cup-tie you opted to sell your cup goalkeeper Juan Musso.

Stuniverse: Si. We hadn't intended to... but Leicester made good bid over his... what we thought... his current value. As Juan is 31... and Matteo Soncin is our numbero uno... and playing very well... we decide take the money for Musso.

Blucerchiati Messaggero: Doesn't that leave you a bit short of depth in the goalkeeping department with Yann Sommer not getting any younger and Valentin Rabouille yet to play for Sampdoria?

Stuniverse: Si. The timing... far from ideal... but the money... too good turn down. We work on bring in... another goalkeeper... this window.

IC_1R_Milan_media2.thumb.png.d61b9974a8ef71d4a2aff62297fce4b0.png

Blucerchiati Messaggero: It's always a big ask playing Milan in the San Siro, but you got a 1-1 draw there in Serie A a couple of months ago. Can you get the result you need to progress to the quarter-finals?

Stuniverse: If I honest... we rode our luck... bit... last time... but the draw at San Siro... give confidence... and we won six out six since. We play better now... than we did last time San Siro... we confident... but know it very difficult task... we face.

Doubtful: Andrija Zivkovic (bruised head-90).

Post-match: AC Milan 3-0 Sampdoria - Italian Cup, First Round

IC_1R_Milan_report.thumb.png.53d536ea843ab247bd1f077e38c4b101.png

Blucerchiati Messaggero: Milan were simply much better than you today. Why do you think that was?

Stuniverse: I not agree... I thought we were... even balanced first-half... nothing choose between us. After break... goals change games... we attack... lose possession... Milano go down the pitch... score goal of highest quality. We open up... as we have to... attack more... they pick us off. I think you'll find... attempts on goal very equal... possession very equal... Milano more clinical in front goal than us. That difference. 3-0 flattered them.

SA19_Lazio_report.thumb.png.7462e8c876c9d3e936c5f3edcae5102e.png

Blucerchiati Messaggero: A good draw against Lazio but, at times, it looked like you were happy with a draw rather than trying to win the match. Was that the case, or did it only look like it?

Stuniverse: Firstly, we're delighted... with point against a very good Lazio. It important... not lose... keep adding points. This was first of four straight games... against current top four... we know that not be easy. We 9th... for  reason... we can be difficult score against... then we find difficult score ourselves... or we can attack... but leave ourself vulnerable at back. We saw against Milan... how when we attack... go expansive... we leave us open at back... they pick us off. We want beat Lazio... of course did... want win every game we play... but decide we need try not lose... not how I like play... not how I want play... but this season... with where we at in our development... we decide that best way... against the top teams.

SA20_Juventus_report.thumb.png.f700d60e208249fc6704f01b15cdb864.png

Blucerchiati Messaggero: Most pundits were expecting you to be heavily beaten today. What are your thoughts after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Juventus?

Stuniverse: I thought players play well... deserve get something out  game. First-half even... hardly anything in it... in fact, we had more possession. It took a worldie... from Leon Bailey... give Juventus lead. No goalkeeper in world stops that shot. We had two great chances to equalise... Gianluca Caprari ran... half length pitch... but final shot lack power... his brilliant run deserve better... then Bruno Santos head just over... late-on.
