STUNIVERSE ON CHARLTON SHORTLIST

BairnsNews understand Charlton Athletic are keen to interview current Falkirk manager Stuniverse about the managerial vacancy at The Valley. The Addicks finished 23rd in the English Championship this season and have been relegated to the English League One.

Our unnamed source at Falkirk FC informs us that Stuniverse, who has a year left on his current deal with the Bairns, wants to stay and manage Falkirk in the Premiership, but is growing concerns over the uncertainty around the ownership of the club and the possibility of a Board imposed transfer embargo during this summer's transfer window.

STUNIVERSE TO CHARLTON? - WHAT WE KNOW

BairnsNews: Speculation and rumours continue to surround Falkirk manager Stuniverse and the managerial vacancy at Charlton Athletic.

What we know? Well, despite our best efforts, we don't know anything concrete as there are so many conflicting reports and comments regarding Stuniverse's future.

The Bookmakers, who usually aren't too far wrong with this sort of thing, have Stuniverse as the 7-2 favourite to be the next manager of Charlton Athletic.

20210605_Charlton_interview2.thumb.png.2ab9f8445d5efa45bc9cccb694c7731e.png

FOURFOURTWO claim Stuniverse has attended an interview at The Valley and that The Addicks Chairman Tom Moss is set to make a formal job offer.

20210605_Charlton_interview1.thumb.png.ba4ffbd04c18769c26ce3a1f2f66122e.png

Sky Sports, who also claim Stuniverse has been interviewed by Charlton, have been unable to get any comment from Stuniverse himself. Here at BairnsNews, we have been unable to contact Stuniverse ourselves and, believe me, we've tried everything. Our unnamed source at the club still maintains that Stuniverse is committed to honouring his contract and managing The Bairns in the Premiership but is getting increasingly frustrated by club owner Lex Miller's public assertions that he wants to sell the club, whilst his actions in allowing three serious negotiations with consortiums to collapse doesn't back up those claims.

20210605_Charlton_interview3.thumb.png.2bba2746b546cd2971fa2ea7956b6626.png

Falkirk FC are taking silence as golden and are adamant that Stuniverse will be staying at Falkirk.

BAIRNS SIGN MAGUIRE

BairnsNews: Falkirk have signed 23 year-old centre-back Barry Maguire on a free transfer after his contract with Motherwell expired. We know, from previous conversations with Falkirk manager Stuniverse, that the Bairns have been tracking Maguire for 18-months and tried to sign him in the January transfer window. Stuniverse was unavailable for comment with a club spokesperson telling us that Stuniverse is on holiday with his family and won't be taking any calls from the media.

MCKENNA SNUBS FALKIRK IN FAVOUR OF HIBS

BairnsNews: Hibs have signed 23 year-old centre-back Ciaran McKenna from Inverness Caledonian Thistle for an initial fee of £18,000.

Falkirk also had a transfer bid accepted for McKenna, and had offered a contract, but the former Bairn opted to join Hibs.

STUNIVERSE IN DEMAND - SUNDERLAND BOUND?

BairnsNews: With Charlton Athletic still expected to offer the current Falkirk boss Stuniverse the opportunity to manage at The Valley, the saga has taken a new twist today with emerging news that Sunderland are eager to interview Stuniverse as well.

Amid all the uncertainty currently surrounding the ownership of Falkirk FC, will Stuniverse swap the Premiership for English League One with either Charlton or Sunderland?

CHARLTON APPOINT MONK

BairnsNews: Falkirk manager Stuniverse won't be leaving for Charlton after the Addicks appointed Garry Monk as their new manager.

It is understood that Stuniverse was offered the Charlton job, after impressing at interview, but decided to reject the offer and stay at Falkirk, despite the uncertainty surrounding the ownership of the club.

BOA MORTE NAMED SUNDERLAND MANAGER

BairnsNews: Sunderland have announced Luis Boa Morte as their new manager. Sunderland did a better job than Charlton of keeping speculation and rumours out of the media, although we understand that Falkirk manager Stuniverse did attend an interview at the Stadium of Light but was not Sunderland's first choice.

STUNIVERSE SET TO STAY AT FALKIRK

BairnsNews: Falkirk manager Stuniverse has committed himself to the Bairns for the upcoming Premiership season by declining the opportunity to attend an interview at Leeds United, who finished bottom of the English Premier League last season and were relegated back to the English Championship.

Stuniverse's current contract with Falkirk runs until the end of this season and, with the current uncertainty surrounding the ownership of the club, his medium to long-term future in football remains unclear.

In a short statement issued via his agent Stanley Baryla, Stuniverse said: "I can assure Ye Bairns fans that my backroom staff and myself are fully committed to Falkirk FC and, having worked with this wonderful group of players to gain back-to-back promotions, we are all looking forward to taking on the Big Boys in the Premiership this season. My current deal with Falkirk FC expires at the end of the season and I'm unsure where my future lies beyond this season. I would love to stay but that is out of my hands and depends on the Board. As I'm sure you can appreciate, job security is very important to me and my family and, with that in mind, I did explore some options available to me this summer. In the end though, it didn't feel right to walk out on this great club and I will be honouring my contract. I encourage loyalty in my players and I felt it was important I showed loyalty as well. Loyalty works both ways though and, as far as I'm concerned, it's up to the club's owners now. Come on, Ye Bairns!"

BOARD EXPECTATIONS

BairnsNews understand from an unnamed source at the club, that the Board expect the Bairns to avoid automatic relegation from the Premiership and will be satisfied with a second-bottom finish resulting in a relegation playoff. Anything over and above that will be a bonus for chairman Lex Miller and the Board.

The chairman remains determined to sell Falkirk FC.

BOARD IMPOSE TRANSFER EMBARGO - TAKEOVER SAGA CONTINUES

BairnsNews: Falkirk chairman Lex Miller has imposed a transfer embargo on the club as he enters into takeover talks with two rival consortiums.

The Bairns manager Stuniverse is believed to be furious with the timing as the Board have blocked deals to sign three players. The Bairns were expected to complete a permanent deal for Scott McCann (DLC), and loan deals for Ciaran McKenna (CB) and Adam Idah (SC) within the next few days. These deals now appear dead-in-the-water.

Pre-match v Blackpool (a) - Friendly (1)

BairnsNews: What can you tell us about the ownership situation at the club and your own contract situation?

Stuniverse: I said all I wanted to say in the statement my agent released.

Match Preview

FR1_Blackpool_preview.thumb.png.af46b59e03e73285ad6600624311e745.png

BairnsNews: OK. How will you be approaching pre-season?

Stuniverse: Same as always. We'll look to get as many of the players match-fit as we can, whilst prioritising the Betfred Cup games as best we can in an attempt to qualify from the Group. We also have six new players we need to integrate into the squad.

Team Selection

Unavailable:
Alan Forrest (hip)

FR1_Blackpool_selection.thumb.png.7af0dd5df3d65269ebb3119d139a43ef.png

BairnsNews: Forrest has a hip injury. Is he your only doubt?

Stuniverse: Yes, he is; Alan has been really unlucky with injuries since he joined us. I wouldn't read anything into the team selection today as I plan on giving 22 players a half each.

Post-match: Blackpool (0) 2-0 (0) Falkirk

FR1_Blackpool_report.thumb.png.dbd8a5c64708ec607c774bb7779eaca4.png

BairnsNews: What did you make of that?

Stuniverse: Well we looked a bit rusty, that's for sure. Both goals were mistakes. For their first, Jordan Marshall underhit a header back to the goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez hesitated, and they scored. For the second, Louis Longridge gave the ball away unnecessarily.

But today was always about fitness and we got 22 players out there for 45 minutes. From that perspective, I'm satisfied, but we need to shake that rustiness off as soon as we can.

Pre-match v Berwick Rangers (a) - Friendly (2)

FR2_Berwick_selection.thumb.png.a0cb1eeb9e3c69687f14ab878baf005a.png

BairnsNews: What's the plan today?

Stuniverse: Well, normally after playing for 45 minutes each in the first friendly, I'd look to do two lots of 60 minutes plus 30 over the next two friendlies, so that all the players had 90 minutes across two games. Our next fixture is against Hamilton in the Betfred Cup though, and we can only make three substitutions in that one, so today the players who start will have to play as long as they can. Then the other players will feature more against Hamilton.

Post-match: Berwick Rangers (0) 0-2 (1) Falkirk

FR2_Berwick_report.thumb.png.9690784cbaf52d7f2dc45111d90b7726.png

BairnsNews: A good win. How did you assess this one?

Stuniverse: Yes, it was a good win with a goal in each half from Adam Idah and then Chris Kane. I thought we were sluggish and looked disjointed for most of the first-half, understandable at this stage of pre-season since most of our new signings played today and they're still learning how we want them to play. After the break, I thought we were more cohesive and caused Berwick more problems.

BairnsNews: St Mirren have signed Falkirk's 20 year-old forward Gabby McGill for a fee of £15,250. McGill, who joined Falkirk in July 2020, spent last season on loan at Solihull Moors and didn't make a single appearance for the Bairns senior team.

Pre-match v Hamilton Academical (a) - Betfred Cup Group H (1)

Match Preview

BC_1_Hamilton_preview.thumb.png.0a9322694f616132c2697766a9f17271.png

BairnsNews: You start this season's Betfred Cup away to the only other Premiership team in your group.

Stuniverse: Yes. In each of the previous two seasons Hamilton have finished 9th in the Premiership so this away trip to the Fountain of Youth Stadium will give us a good idea as to how we're shaping up. Ideally I'd have preferred to play Hamilton in the third or fourth game, when we're a bit more prepared, but I guess the scheduling is the same for both of us.

Team Selection

Alan Forrest (hip)

BC_1_Hamilton_selection.thumb.png.6f26ab80d6914ccb2a34cc83eacec966.png

BairnsNews: As this is your first competitive match of the season, can you talk us through your team selection?

Stuniverse: Sure. Robbie Mutch is in goal. A back-four of TJ Eyoma, Efe Ambrose, Tom Grivosti and Calum Macdonald. In midfield Anthony McDonald, Ethan Hamilton, Jason Holt and Aidan Connolly. Up front it's Steven Boyd and Jahmal Hector-Ingram.

BairnsNews: Only one of your new signings start?

Stuniverse: Yes. I wouldn't read too much into that though. It's early in pre-season and the new guys are still getting used to how we like to play. For this game, I decided to go with a team that had played together regularly last season as I think that will give us more cohesion to our play at this early stage of pre-season.

Post-match: Hamilton Academical (1) 1-2 (1) Falkirk

BC_1_Hamilton_report.thumb.png.7682a2f593b7e1c65b92e89b0a8b6b8a.png

BairnsNews: That was an excellent win. Congratulations.

Stuniverse: Thank you. I thought we started really well and Jahmal Hector-Ingram hit the post and Tom Grivosti hit the crossbar with a header early on. When they took the lead, I thought it was against the run of play. My players showed tremendous character and kept pushing forward. Jahmal equalised for us. After the break, Craig Sibbald gave us the lead from the penalty spot. Efe Ambrose nearly gave us some breathing space when his powerful header hit the crossbar. I thought my players were magnificent today.

BairnsNews: Boyd limped off. How is he?

Stuniverse: Steven felt his calf tighten; taking him off was more precautionary than anything else.

BairnsNews: You blew Institute away in the first-half, didn't you?

Stuniverse: We played very well in the first 45, I must admit. We started the game in clinical fashion; our first four attempts all produced goals for Chris Kane, two from Lewis Smith, and a Craig Sibbald penalty. Chris added another goal before the break. Georgie Kelly scored our sixth goal in the second-half. Overall, I thought we played brilliantly with and without the ball.

Match Preview

BC_2_Cowdenbeath_preview.thumb.png.20bd3063b692bc82a38409f9377c8d72.png

BairnsNews: At home to a League Two side, you should have no problems against Cowdenbeath today.

Stuniverse: I wouldn't say that. We caused a lot of cup upsets ourselves when we were in League One so we won't be underestimating Cowdenbeath and have prepared just as thoroughly as we do for any game.

BairnsNews: You've made two changes from the last group match.

Stuniverse: That's right. Steven Boyd has a slight calf issue so Adam Idah starts up front. Lewis Smith comes in for Aidan Connolly.

Post-match: Falirk (4) 5-1 (0) Cowdenbeath

BC_2_Cowdenbeath_report.thumb.png.abd050a86b55730d06b323c8fd17897f.png

BairnsNews: Three early goals and then the result was never in doubt.

Stuniverse: Yes, we flew out of the blocks today. Jahmal Hector-Ingram, Anthony McDonald and Jason Holt all scored within the first 10 minutes. Adam Idah added a fourth before the break. TJ Eyoma scored the best goal of the game late on with a sensational long-range strike. It could, and perhaps should, have been more as Craig Sibbald missed two penalties; the first was well saved by Muir, the second he put wide. Going forward we were very impressive but, defensively, we still have some work to do.

BairnsNews: Everton represent a massive challenge today, don't they?

Stuniverse: Absolutely, they do. But so do Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen, Hibs and Hearts, which is exactly why we wanted a challenging friendly game.

BairnsNews: How do you sum that one up?

Stuniverse: We lost, but I think we can hold our heads really high after that one. Everton are a very good team but they could only put one goal past us, and that was only because Craig Sibbald conceded a harsh penalty. The stats will say Everton were bossing the game, but we defended well, and created some good chances, and hopefully that bodes well for some of the difficult games we'll face in the Premiership this season.

BairnsNews: You've put yourselves into a great position by winning your first two group matches. Can you make it three?

Stuniverse: That's what we're looking to do, yes, but I'm sure Queen's Park will make it difficult for us.

BairnsNews: Two changes from the Cowdenbeath match.

Stuniverse: Yes. I thought the whole team was outstanding last time out in the cup so I didn't want to change too much. Lewis Smith was looking a bit tired so Aidan Connolly comes in. Also, Robert Sanchez takes the gloves from Robbie Mutch.

Post-match: Queen's Park (0) 0-2 (1) Falkirk

BC_3_QueensPark_report.thumb.png.af1b4f88274ea60b823584807c8a2de5.png

BairnsNews: A comfortable victory for your side.

Stuniverse: Yes. Queen's Park worked hard, and made life difficult for us at times, but we kept them at bay through some good defensive work. With the ball, we weren't at our best, but a goal in each half from Anthony McDonald and Chris Kane proved enough.

BC_3_QueensPark_Qualify.thumb.png.2df239cb8649e6253b434fce95bbc864.png

BairnsNews: Congratulations. Your maximum points from three matches means you've guaranteed qualification from the Group.

Stuniverse: That's fantastic, with a game still to go, but we won't be relaxing. We want to qualify as Group Winners, not as one of the best second-placed teams.

Hello readers my is Jack WIlson and I'm once again at the Canal Inn looking to talk to Falkirk fans about last seasons results. Luckily we had no shortage of people who wanted the share their opinion's. You sir what do you think about Stuniverse and the freshly ended season? " Aye, honestly Stuniverse is a pure dead brilliant manager, all the talk'n heads on tv said we would be battling for a playoff spot, while he went on and won the Championship." Another fan mentioned " I'm glad Stuniverse is sticking around to fight it out in the big boy league, the lads over in Charlton and Sunderland don't know what they're missing out on." Match Preview

BairnsNews: Having already qualified for the second round, how are you approaching the final group match at home to League Two Edinburgh City?

Stuniverse: It's great that we've already qualified but we want to win the Group, not go through as one of the best runner-ups. So I've picked a team to win the game. We'll then look to give anyone who still needs playing time some minutes in the legs in our final friendly against Stirling University, and then we'll be ready to kick-off the Premiership campaign at home to Ross County.

Stuniverse: Yes. Efe Ambrose is suspended, and a number of players are looking tired, so quite a few changes. Barry Maguire takes Efe's place. Josh Dacres-Cogley, Jordan Marshall, Louis Longridge, Michael Tidser and Chris Kane come in for TJ Eyoma, Calum Macdonald, Anthony McDonald, Ethan Hamilton and Jahmal Hector-Ingram.

BairnsNews: Congratulations. You've won the Group with a 100% record. How do you assess this match?

Stuniverse: Thank you. We wanted to win the Group and we did. I thought we did well in all areas of the pitch today. We thought we'd taken the lead with Adam Idah's neat finish, but he was fractionally offside. Michael Tidser gave us the lead with a superb free-kick. Adam did get his goal, after the break, with a fine header that went in off the post. Georgie Kelly came off the bench and wrapped things up for us.

Scottish Premiership - observation

So there’s 12 Teams in the SPL and our fixture list runs 33 games at the moment, meaning we play everybody in the league three times up to that point - either two at home and one away, or one at home and two away.

After 33 games the league splits into two - the top six and the bottom six. There’s then another five games, making a total of 38, against the five other teams in your split - presumably evening things up to two home and two away. Points are earnt as normal but for the overall league table teams in the bottom split can’t climb into the top six and teams in the top six can’t drop into the bottom six.

BAIRNS CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED

BairnsNews: Falkirk manager Stuniverse has named 31 year-old midfielder Michael Tidser as captain, with 24 year-old striker Steven Boyd named as vice-captain.

Centre-back Gregor Buchanan, the Bairns captain for the previous two seasons, was released in the summer when his contract expired. Buchanan has since signed for AFC Fylde in the English League Two.

Pre-match v Stirling Unversity (a) - Pre-season friendly (5)

Match Preview

FR5_StirlingUni_preview.thumb.png.1734a7b001d0f84ffed35707d8a22967.png

BairnsNews: With your Premiership season kicking-off on Saturday at home to Ross County, what's your thinking today?

Stuniverse: We've had a good pre-season, including winning our Betfred Cup Group, so today is about getting minutes into the legs of players who, for one reason or another, haven't got as much playing time in as we would've liked.

Team Selection

FR5_StirlingUni_report.thumb.png.1d7f0d589aeefd4d1f988d3d8416f1c2.png

BairnsNews: Did you tell the players to ease off after the break?

Stuniverse: No, not at all [laughs]. Sometimes it happens like that after a high scoring first-half. The interval gave them a chance to regroup and tighten up at the back, which they did, and I think we had some tired legs out there second-half, given that the team consisted of the players who'd had the least playing time so far this pre-season.

But what a first-half, huh? Four goals from Georgie Kelly, two sensational strikes from Lewis Smith, and Aidan Connolly got the ball rolling for us, pardon the pun. Late on we did think Louis Longridge had made it eight, but he was ruled offside.

FR5_StirlingUni_stats.thumb.png.8e6d20a53546484c85c58f3cad50c165.png

BairnsNews: The Premiership season starts on Saturday at home to Ross County. Are you ready?

Stuniverse: We're as ready as we're ever going to be. Pre-season has gone very well, but people need to be realistic this season. We've had two fantastic seasons where we've won back-to-back promotions with two league titles, plus we've enjoyed amazing cup runs with semi-finals, finals, and lifting the Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup. Over the last two seasons we've had a high winning percentage, a very high winning percentage if I'm honest, and we've hardly lost a game. That won't be the case this season. We'll still be trying to win every game we play but, being frank, we haven't got the budgets of Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts, Motherwell, Kilmarnock and the like... It's going to be a very difficult challenge for us this season.

Match Preview

SPL1_RossCo_preview.thumb.png.79f34ec503686e68d718f2ddc438a14a.png

BairnsNews: How pleased were you to see your opening fixture was home to Ross County, a team you finished above in the Championship last season and beat three times?

Stuniverse: Well, yes, with all due respect to Ross County, there's teams in the Premiership that would've given us a tougher opening fixture, but we can't take anything for granted. Don't forget Ross County beat us in one game last season and we've both made new signings and changed things around so, to be honest, neither of us know what we're going to face today.

Team Selection

BairnsNews: Four changes from your last competitive match against Edinburgh City.

Stuniverse: Yes. Josh Dacres-Cogley was a bit tired in training this week so TJ Eyoma starts at right-back. Anthony McDonald starts on the right-wing ahead of Louis Longridge and Lewis Smith comes in on the left-wing for Aidan Connolly. Jahmal Hector-Ingram plays up front instead of Chris Kane.

Post-match: Falkirk (2) 2-0 (0) Ross County

BairnsNews: Welcome back to the Premiership and welcome back with a win!

Stuniverse: Thank you. I'm delighted to have got the win today for the players and for Ye Bairns fans. I know with the ownership uncertainty, and speculation over my future, it wasn't the easiest of summers for them. Hopefully my backroom staff and myself have demonstrated our commitment to this great club during pre-season.

I thought the players worked tirelessly and were good value for the three points. A great strike from the edge of the penalty area by our captain Michael Tidser gave us the lead. Jahmal Hector-Ingram added a second with a fine header from an Adam Idah cross. Robert Sanchez then proved what a quality goalkeeper he is with a world class save to keep out a free-kick but, after that, Ross County didn't cause us any problems.

SPL1_RossCo_lgTab.thumb.png.8fdd36465c1a9553481f5466453607ed.png

BairnsNews: How important is it to start a season with a win?

Stuniverse: I think it's vitally important. It builds confidence and momentum from the opening day. If you fail to win your opening game, particularly your opening home game, then doubts can creep in and the longer you then go without a win you can easily lose confidence in your ability to get a win. Fortunately we have three points on the board already and the players deserved that for all their hard work in pre-season.
