I haven't played in Italy for a few years, since a save with Lazio where i eventually won the league with major contributions from Ciro Immobile and, more surprisingly, Cristiano Lombardi.

I've decided to take on the job at Genoa.  It seems like a good challenge and I've noticed that when people describe the great kits in Italy and often focus on Fiorentina and, of course, Genoa's city rivals - Sampdoria, and I think the Genoa kit is right up there.

Having had a quick look at my squad I can see this will be 'interesting' in season 1.

  • We have a £6m transfer budget and a £605k wage budget (using £620k on day 1, so over budget already).
  • The board expects mid-table and to reach the cup first round and to play high-tempo pressing football, while staying within the wage budget.
  • I can’t terminate or recall loanees so start with 11 loans in first team squad, 4 loans out plus another 10 or 11 loans out in the reserve squad, who might be capable of playing at a decent level.
  • Future transfers agreed:  In – Pinamonti (ST) from Inter for £15.5m, Favilli (ST) from Juventus for £6m and Cassata (DM, MLC) from Sassuolo for £2.8m.  Out – Agudelo (MC, AMLC) to Fiorentina for £10.25m and Kouame (AMRL, ST) to Fiorentina for £9.5m.
  • Optional fees:  Sanabria (ST) from Betis can be made permanent for £17m, Soumaoro (DC,DM) from Lille can be made permanent for £8.5m, Barreca (D/WB/ML) from Monaco can be made permanent for £21m, Goldaniga (DC) from Sassuolo can be made permanent for £2.5m.

The plan:  I’m not someone who likes loaning players in, as I don’t see the point of developing a player for someone else’s benefit when I can give the playing time to a contracted player.  However, in season 1 for Genoa I am going to have to utilise those loan players, as they make up so much of my squad.

I’m not expecting great things, so I’m hoping to use this season as a chance to experiment with a few different tactics and see which players fit in well in certain positions and roles.  My priority will be to give playing time to existing contracted players and the 3 loanees that are joining permanently at the end of the season.

Let's see how it goes.

What about your affiliate?

This was a big problem for me in FM19, I just keep buying non-EU players. Now I'm following the rules closely. :D

i already loaned out 2 for them, in the hope of him becomming eligble :(

Thought you meant Soumare (also from Lille) there for a moment! :D

Good choice in Genoa, I liked Pinamonti in real life and of course there's Criscito, a legend for Genoa.

Welcome @Fraser!

REGGINA 1914

Reggina are still at the top of the table, but the winter months haven't been that kind to us. I've suffered my first defeat, lost in the Coppa Italia to Torino (albeit a narrow defeat), and we have been somewhat less dominant in the Serie C as well with a string of draws. We are headed for an exciting last four games, but I seem to have the easiest fixtures by far.

Z9143ob.png

My vice-captain Francesco De Rose came to me complaining about playing time in January, and I was happy to sell him, as he was fifth in line for playing time at central midfield, so I finally managed to raise a bit of cash, selling him at €150k.

I didn't get my so-called golden generation, but I did get a very good player from the Ivory Coast, a good Polish goalkeeper, and some decent prospects.

Only choice is to wait for the 2nd season or download the customised DB. Haven't tried it, though Palermo is in Serie C in my save at the moment (I didn't do the reload thing for them to get promoted).

Before Tonali at Brescia, Verratti at Pescara was the player to get. Feels like yesterday! :D

Yes, he looks like quite a prospect, I think. I'm throwing him to the wolves right away, and then I'll have to see if he can cut it at 16 years old.

I turn the faces off, as they ruin any chance of immersion for me. The quality is simply too low.

What's the connection to Ivory Coast with Reggiana? A member of staff?

No staff, and no affiliates either. I was about to write about it being a common seconds nationality, but he actually isn't Italian at all. He has 1224 days completed on his passport, so he must have arrived in the country at a young age. Quite strange scenario for the game to think up...

That's silly. I would hate for that to happen to me and I can't imagine Juve would ever turn down a scudetto-winning manager for that reason. I didn't even apply for the Milan job as I knew there was too much left in the season for them to wait for me when there were higher reputation free agents available.

I see my boy Gianluca Gaetano came third in the scoring charts! Would you mind taking a screenshot of him for me out of curiosity? Interested to see how he looks compared to my own. I feel like he's definitely been stronger in previous iterations but he's still doing a job for me this time around.

Pretty similar to be fair. Guessing the AI managers havent managed to develop him much. Probably stunted his potential going forward.

Beyond happy with how's it going so far! I always said to myself maybe the next game will be the game when Kulusevski wouldn't score or will be the game we would get trounced. But it never came! (Until the Milan game when Kulusevski couldn't scored on his 12th straight match).

Best player so far!

@ParanoidBuddha this is what happened when you pushed your player to the ground and buried him there  I had to put him on normal intensity training in December, to have him available for all of the last 4 games. Could explain why his stats dropped a lot.

Kulusevski scored in all his games apart from 3, in fact in his first 11 games, until the Milan 1-0 win. The other 2 games he didn't scored were the Roma 0-1 lost, and the Inter 3-0 win.

Kulusevki had only played in 9 out of the 18 Serie A games, though, in my futile effort trying to keep him fit. He played in all Europa League matches, apart from the 2nd leg against Rangers due to his red card.

Kulusevki missed these 9 Serie A games against Sampdoria 0-0, Napoli 1-3, Udinese 2-0, Torino 0-0, Perugia 3-0, SPAL 1-0, Sassuolo 1-0, Bolgona 2-1, Benevento 1-1. So, all together 10 games missed.

20 games played out of possible 30. 23 Goals, 4 Assists, 9 Player of The Match, 4 Yellow Cards, 1 Red Card. 7.90 Average Rating.

Last season: 30 (5) appearances, 9 Goals, 5 Assists, 3 Player of the Match, 8 Yellow Cards, 0 Red Card, 6.95 Average Rating.

His form suffered due to his jadedness but he was still contributing and when I asked to send him on holiday for 2 weeks, he refused! Towards the end, he was scoring but his rating wasn't as high because he made so many mistakes towards the end of each match. For example, he finished the last game against Juventus on 57% fitness, I think, and despite scoring the equaliser, he only got 7.2 rating after making 5 mistakes.

As of the Winter midseason break, here is the table:

Juventus would have gone 2nd if it weren't for Kulusevski's equaliser in the last game of the year.

Only thing I'm disappointed with was mentoring. First, Cistana went from Fairly Determined to Spirited (His mentoring group was Bruno Alves (Driven) and Gagliolo (Fairly Determined), so I at least expected him to be gain something. Had to remove Gagliolo and put in Sugawara (Balanced) instead.

Then, Radu who gained Driven from Buffon (Born Leader) last season, went back to Resolute. This was my mistake as I had expected Radu (Driven) to mentor Alastra (Spirited) and Colombi (Spirited). Turned out it had a negative effect on Radu. Removed him from the group straight away and now I'm looking for an experience backup GK to mentor my players.

Balogh made an enforced debut when Iacoponi was all over the place in the 1-1 draw against Benevento. His development improved afterwards, so I guess it was a positive thing. I gave Tolemello his debut in the same match as well. Now, Laurenzi will have to wait for his next chance.

As you can see, I'm taking advantage of the short break by sending Kulusevski on a week holiday, back in time for our next game against Sampdoria on January 3rd! :D

Half-way Review:

Spoiler

Since Radu rejoined us only in August after Alastra played in all the Europa League matches, I decided Radu will play in Serie A, and Alastra will keep his place in Europa League. Alastra also gets to play against any of the bottom 3 in Serie A, as I want him to develop as much as possible. Radu's still on-loan to us, so long term, he might not be our number 1, so I'm preparing Alastra for the eventuality. It seemed to work as our defence have been quite good, with Cistana helping improving our old and slow backline. Gagliolo and Pezzalla have been great as well.

In midfield, Hernani has been slow to pick up his form as an injury early on put him back a bit. His form was getting better before the break, and hopefully he will have a stronger 2nd half of the season. Brugman have been good as well, especially coming off the bench, better than Kurtic.

Special mention to young Palmucci! He's taken the Carrilero as his own and starting to develop a good understanding with Kulusevski (all his assists and his first goal for Parma all involved the big-red-Swede :D)

Martinelli and Esposito have been slow to produce some form, but it is understandable as they were in and out of the side all the time. Gervinho been disappointing and Karamoh is a hit and miss player, usually more effective off the bench than starting.

Inglese is playing better overall than his first half season last year (he usually ends up on 6.8+ on his rating without a goal). 6 goals is not bad but it is too far away if I want a 20 goals a season striker. No chance he is leaving, though! :D

For the Winter Transfer Window, we currently have £1.36m, which can be adjusted to £4m. Grassi wanted to go out on loan, so will find him a team for 6 months before selling him in the summer, he hasn't impressed when giving the chance. I might look into signing a new midfielder to replace him, besides in the mid-to-long term, Kucka and Kurtic are not really performing that greatly for me anyway. I mostly played them to help guide young Palmucci and using their physicality in most of the bigger games.

Next update: January Transfer Window and disclosing some of my long-term transfer targets.

Edit: Added Palmucci's screenshot. I just downloaded the latest 3 changes to the Cut-Off Megapacks and was delighted to see Palmucci now have his image included :D (Sugawara and Tolemello and a bunch of the youth players also got their image added, someone must be a Parma fan at Sortitoutsi :D)

Sacked at Chievo. Holidayed first season, and now managing Palermo in Serie C

Updated the list. Nice, first Palermo save in this thread! :D

I haven't managed to find much time for FM in the past month or so. If/when that changes, I'll probably end up starting a new save. It's hard to get back into a save after this long.

Will you be back in Italy or somewhere else? Updated your status as 'save ended'.

Absolutely smashing it this season. Some very good results not just in the league but Europe too. Hopefully you can keep the form up until the end of the season.

Thanks! Can you believe that I'm more worried about Kulusevski's than Parma's form at the moment?

I just never had someone played like he did and scoring freely from midfield. Even strikers haven't been great in FM19 and FM20, and I don't remember the last time my striker scored a goal a game (must be one of the earliest FMs or CMs).

Now, the downside to all this is.. Juventus might want him for their first team next season :(

Oh I know that feeling. Every game that passed with Kean last year I was waiting for the performances to dry up and him to end up on a goal drought. Luckily he kept the form going. On my save Kulusevski stayed at Juventus all the way through after the first season before joining Spartak Moscow in the current transfer window. His play time was limited though which effected him. Your version probably has better stats.

I hope to loan him for one or two more seasons, just so I can have enough money to eventually buy him :D

I have better chance if he was Inter player though, since they are my senior affiliate and more likely to loan their players to me (for free, only paying the wages 100%).

I can imagine it already building my side around Kulusevski  Prepared to be crushed at the same time

Your Kean is on another level! I've never had a striker like that, definitely couldn't think it's possible in the current ME (and previous FM19 ME as well). The fact that I'm committed to Inglese despite his form, means I won't be looking to buy a starting striker anytime soon.

Edit: I actually just remembered that I bought Kean in FM19, it took him in the 3rd season (my 8th season, I think) with Parma to score 20+ goals a season. So, unlikely I will go back in for him again in this version, despite him being at Brighton made it a better chance to get him.

Yeah it shocked me too. I have never had a player perform like he did. As a Juve fan I always wanted to bring him back to Italy and just wanted him as a good option to replace Milik when we sold him. I cant see him being anywhere near the same level this season.
And I hope you do manage to keep him he is young enough to have an amazing career. Would be nice if you could finally get a Scudetto with him in your team.

*EDIT Just looked in the club history screen and Despite my heroics im only favoured personnel. Kean is in the legend category after one season.

Despite Parma being in good position, it would surprise me if we won it in the 2nd season. Juventus was 9th at one point but they started to recover. I was lucky to get the draw against them, tbh.

Qualifying for CL would be good, though, hopefully more budget to improve my squad.
