How many hours have you been playing this game series for?

Recommended Posts

I am just curious as to how many hours, anyone other than me, has played the Football Manager game series for. Here is mine over 2 steam accounts.

Factoring in sleep you've only got around 6000 hour to play with each year and you chose to spend 4800 hours of it playing FM17, not sure whether to commend you or tell you to get out more  :D

I'd post my own results but a lot of the time I leave my PC on overnight so it wouldn't be a fair reflection of actual time played

Though this only counts the ones I have on Steam. I probably played other iterations for circa 10k hours.

Probably the same averages over the boxed non steam versions as well. I had more time back then.

I have 1,241 hours counted on Steam, but that doesn't include time when I played in offline mode or older pre-Steam FMs. It would probably be ~2.5k hours overall, so actually not that much compared to some people here

I played FM too many hours. That sums it up I think.

Usually I look at the reviews of some other games and they are like 90 + hours of gameplay, outstanding!

And I always take this as too short.

3831 hours on FM19... tho I admit I often leave it on when not actually playing or going somewhere for not too long.

My First FM was 2006. I've owned 9 of them since then, and I've probably put an absolute minimum of 500 hours into each one. I know I've put in over 1000 on at least 4 of those, so I'd say, conservatively, 8000 hours.

And that doesn't include pre- or non-FM management sims.

FM19: 1355
FM18: 1137
FM17:   158 (it was a late purchase IIRC)
FM16:   580
FM15:    14
FM14: 2798
FM13:  921
FM12:  883
FM11: 1492
FM10: ~400
FM09: ~350
FM08:  ~350
FM05-07: <100 (at best, as couldn't get past the 2nd/3rd season)

(for pre-Steam editions, the hours are based on the longest save I still have available, so they don't take into account long-lost or deleted careers, aborted saves etc)

It's a whopping >10000 hours! FOUR HUNDRED AND FORTY THREE DAYS to be somewhat more accurate... Basically an entire year of my life has been spent playing FM... I don't know how to feel about that

Anyway, it was an interesting evolution... The switch from CM to FM happened at when my interest in management games was at an all-time low (due to having "overdosed" on Premier Manager 3, CM 2/97-98/3...)
Suffice to say I didn't even get to enjoy the (allegedly) "best CM ever" in 01-02, which I bought on sale in late 03 and didn't really play anyway. The new FM interface and approach (Pig in the Middle, urgh!) made things worse and I basically kept on getting the games out of habit from the bargain bin just to confirm I wasn't really into them.

A random save in FM08 (already well into FM09 life cycle) rekindled my passion, which still took a few iterations to come back in full swing. It was a glorious journeyman career in FM11 (Jubilo, Aalesund, Palmeiras, Sunderland, Chelsea and Barça) that certified my official relapse.
Steady, albeit not-so-memorable, runs in 12 and 13 (didn't even remember some of the clubs I managed) and then Undrið happened in FM14 as a "joke save" turned into something awesome and monstrous. To the point I literally ignored 15 and didn't really care much about 16, much less so about 17, basically giving them a token try before heading back to 14 and to the Faroe.

Another journeyman save, started on some other islands (Samoa this time) helped me finally transitioning to FM18 and then on 19 I decided to go for the actual Hexagon challenge after having started on the BVI.

Oddly enough I haven't had a good old Rosenborg Power Fantasy in ages (probably FM12 or 13...). And haven't managed a top club in a top leage for just as much. The struggle to lead crappy clubs to some semblance of irrelevant glory in obscure leagues and sub-par continental competitions is much more fun than throwing millions at every problem ;)

My FM Steam hours...

FM11: 69 hours (not including countless hours spent playing the non-Steam version on CD)

FM13: 4,236 hours (I had a VERY long career that went on for nearly 5 real-life years)

FM15: 196 hours

FM16: 343 hours

FM17: 681 hours

FM19: 870 hours (and counting?)

That's a total of 6,395 hours. Nearly 266-and-a-half days. Over six-and-a-half months.

Those are amateur figures compared to other FMers on here, but still... that's a HUGE chunk of my gametime. The only other games I've spent 100+ Steam hours on are Age of Empires II, Two Point Hospital and Civilization V. Even going down to 50+ hours only adds Motorsport Manager and Cities: Skylines to that list.

FM2010: 253hrs

FM2011: 1669hrs

FM2014: 1248hrs

FM2015: 1144hrs

FM2016: 1268hrs

FM2018: 1713hrs

FM2019: 1477hrs (so far)

FM11 until FM15 were during my time at university, so I had quite some free time as you can see ;)

Afterwards when I started a full time job the hours gradually declined with FM19 as an all time low. To be fair: I've bought a new gaming PC a year ago, while I had quite a crappy machine before, so I'm also still playing tons of other games that came out in the last couple of years that my machine couldn't handle before.

However, I've enjoyed each and every one of them!

Far, far too many to count. I started with the original Championship Manager on the Amiga. I can even remember playing the original Football Manager on the Spectrum, but that's not the same series.

3959 hours on FM19

3059 hours on FM18

1789 hours on FM17

1371 hours on FM16

1818 hours on FM14

2075 hours on FM12

1150 hours on FM11

522 hours on FM10

I guess I am trending up!

I leave the game running over night and play super deep saves with every league even youths running the full engine. So my Saturdays in game can take 30-40 minutes to run. I usually time those with getting something to eat or a shower, etc.

Also I work at home a lot, so I can have the work and home laptops running side by side and I can do work while the game is simming.

I just hit the Champions League Final 2023 bug, and every one of those 3959 hours is sunk into one save, that I've been playing since November. I am beyond disappointed right now after having sunk so much time into this game.

Hmm way too many. Maybe 20-30k? A lot of those are off steam as I played more when I was younger. Been playing since I was 9 (only games I for a while were CM versions & Baldurs Gate). The impact was no where near as bad as WoW though, that game ruined me for a bit

Very impressive, as time consuming as it is, you are getting the complete full immersive experience, I doubt many, if any, are simming the entire game world in full detail, kudos for the patience 4000 hours to do 4 seasons is dedicated stuff

Out of interest what system are you running it on?  (not that it matters, it would run like a dog on a new i9 )

I've only bought the last few from Steam but have been playing every year (apart from FM17) since CM 00/01:

FM18: 587 hours
FM17: skipped
FM16: 435 hours

My average each year is 1800/2000 hours. Not easy to play more with a wife and 3 childs

I've not got a record as I started in 1999, long before Steam or even reliable access to the internet. My annual averages always varied enormously depending on where I was with my career (and geographically, over six nations), but I'd say never less than 1500 hours per edition/annum (not including running saves overnight). Being so slow and methodical, I rarely got through ten seasons with one team in all those hours, and as a lower-league manager never got higher than the fourth tier.

This year I retired, and my initial thoughts were to spend unlimited time on FM.  In fact, the opposite happened - it dawned on me that it's not how I wish to spend the whole latter part of my life and have turned to writing novels instead.

Thus, I have decided to retire from playing FM and not purchase FM2020 - a huge disconnect with my life. It's not through any view on FM2020 or FM itself, but simply it's time to change the direction of my life after 20 sweet years (3.5 solid of which I've spent playing the game).

Hah, you are correct re: the immersive experience. Not sure I could do it any other way. I don't have every player, but with this new Stadia thingy, maybe?

I am actually starting my 6th season, and I did figure out a work around for the Champions League final bug, using a 3rd party editor. It allowed me to swap national call ups. And I got lucky that I played Bayern, and Germany is hosting Euro 2024, so the Bayern/Germany players didn't called up. Which also means I would have gotten wiped out without that editor :-) I won 3-1!

My system is:

MacBook Pro late 2016

2.9 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3 RAM

4 GB VRAM add-on, in addition to the standard Intel graphics 530 1536 MB

****

I also have an iMac from Feb 2016 with

4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

32 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 RAM

AMD Radeon RP M395X 4 GB VRAM

But that's the 'family computer' which I've probably only used for 5-10% of my FM19 play. I should test to see what kind of difference that would make speed wise. I don't travel like I used to. I'd bet I could put the laptop in the kitchen with a monitor and put the iMac in the office, and if I did it overnight, no one would even know the difference :brock:

I've been playing since CM 01/02

Roughly 1,500-2000 hours per a game but in my younger years could be higher. What with actual life and bills to pay now lol

Because I played the game both under this name and the previous CM, probably I surpassed 50k hours. Maybe I am exaggerating, but it's definitely the one and only game that kept on going over the ages. There used to be Sims and Total War franchise, but while Sims became too repetitive, Total War never kept the pace in very disappointing releases over the years. So it's Football Manager!!!

Ooooh, ouch, meow, woof, the game is soooo expensive. Oh really???? What games do you guys play for hundreds of hours each year? What games do offer the same ROI years in years out? No other game.

If you want to test the difference get over to the benchmarking thread, it'd be great to get some Apple hardware on there for comparison

Oh yeah, great idea! I'll do this in the next couple of days.

Although i have been playing since Champs days and all the way through to FM12 my interest in new versions have waned for various reasons.

However, i don't have a collection of all hours spent playing. Playing FM12 is a must for me.

can't find the stats from fm11 and earlier.

fm12: 103 hours

fm13: 628 hours

fm14: 877 hours

fm15: 1102 hours

fm16: 962 hours

fm17: 1046 hours

fm18: 1358 hours

fm19: 1307 hours

I stopped coaching kids in youth football in 2017 so that's  why my playing time increased.  should have less time because of my job and kids.

I'm at about 300-500 for each one. Only got the numbers from 2009 because that's the first Steam game of course, but I think I spent the most time on FM08.
