BATTLEGROUND PORTUGAL - BRINGING ALENTEJO TO THE FRONT

The Alentejo (UK: /ˌælənˈteɪʒuː/ AL-ən-TAY-zhoo, Portuguese: [ɐlẽˈtɛʒu] ) is a geographical, historical and cultural region of south central and southern Portugal. In Portuguese, its name means "beyond (além) the Tagus river" (Tejo).

Alentejo includes the regions of Alto Alentejo and Baixo Alentejo. It corresponds to the districts of Beja, Évora, Portalegre and the Alentejo Litoral. The main cities are: Évora, Beja, Serpa, Estremoz, Elvas and Portalegre.

It has borders with Beira Baixa in the North, with Spain (Andalucia and Extremadura) in the east, with the Algarve in the South and with the Atlantic Ocean, Ribatejo and Estremadura in the West.

The Alentejo is a region known for its traditional polyphonic singing groups, similar to those found in Tuscany, Corsica, and elsewhere.

The comarca of the Alentejo became the Alentejo Province, divided into upper (Alto Alentejo Province) and lower (Baixo Alentejo Province) designations. The modern region of the Alentejo was expropriated from the medieval provinces and historical territories of Estremadura Province (specifically the 1936 portions of the Ribatejo). The term Entre-Tejo-e-Guadiana has become obsolete; it referred to roughly the same land area between the Tagus and the Guadiana rivers as part of the Kingdom of Portugal.

Alentejo's area extends to 27,272 square kilometres (10,530 square miles) (29.6% of the country) and has a population of 537,556 (5.1% of the country). Excluding Ponte de Sor, its area is 26,432 km2 (10,205 sq mi) and its population 520,834. The population density of Alentejo is 19.1/km².

Topographically the countryside varies from the open rolling plains of the south of the Alentejo to the granite hills that border Spain in the northeast. To feed the water needs of this considerable area a number of public dams have been constructed, most notably the Alqueva Dam. The landscape is primarily one of soft rolling hills and plains, with conspicuous shrubs and the native cork oaks and holly/holm oaks, the established olive trees and grapevines, plus some large-scale toilet roll production of eucalyptus trees and some native trees. In the north, traditional economic activity may be more livestock-based as typified by cow, sheep, and pig (both white and black) farming. To the south agriculture may be more predominant.

The climate of the region is typically warm and dry for a large part of the year, with summer temperatures occasionally reaching up to 40 °C (104 °F), while winters are relatively mild and wet. The climate is not uniform throughout the region, though: mid-summer temperatures in coastal areas are usually much lower (often around 25 °C (77 °F)) than inland ones (which frequently hover around 35 °C (95 °F)). This much resembles the contrast between Casablanca and the Moroccan interior, where the presence of the nearby Atlantic Ocean gives rise to marked temperature differences between coastal and even nearby inland zones. Usually, the warmest temperatures can be found in the southernmost inland parts of the region, along the Guadiana valley between Mertola and Juromenha, particularly in the areas close to Moura. However, the hottest days tend to deviate from the usual pattern and will arise when the winds are east or southeast and very hot air with temperature reaching 25 °C (77 °F) or more at 850 hPA level (near 1500 metres' height usually) enter Iberia from Africa. If the winds are strong enough another deep and very low lying valley, the one of the river Sado, becomes extremely warm by European standards. Places like Alvalade do Sado and Alcacer do Sal, but basically the whole Sado valley below 75 metres (246 ft) can reach 45 °C (113 °F) under extreme circumstances and 40 °C (104 °F) in the summer is regularly reached each year despite the fact that they are relatively close to the coast. The highest temperature ever recorded in Portugal and in fact Europe (this century) was measured on 1 August 2003 in Amareleja and reached 47.4 °C (117.3 °F). Since the meteorological station is about 100 metres (330 ft) above the nearby valley near Moura it is very likely that about 48.5 °C (119.3 °F) was reached there but no measurements were taken. What is most impressive and unique in Europe was a stretch of no less than 17 consecutive days at Amareleja with a maximum temperature of 40 °C (104 °F) or more (reaching an average over the period of 43,5 C). This was only equaled over the same period in Cordoba Spain, the average over there however was 42.4 °C (108.3 °F) so slightly less hot over the same period. Finally the average daytime maximum temperatures reach 35 to 36 °C (95 to 97 °F) in July and August near Moura, 33 to 34 °C (91 to 93 °F) in the Sado Valley (and other inland valleys away from the coast). Many parts, however, are above 200 or even 300 m which leads to clearly lower average temperatures also in summer. It is very likely that the Guadiana river valley away from the coast is the second-hottest on average in Europe after the inland part of the Spanish Guadalquivir region especially near Cordoba. The extremes in this valley, however, are somewhat lower (most just above 46 °C (115 °F)). Portugal including the Alentejo region are not escaping global warming and the average temperatures are clearly on the rise. Some climate models indicate daytime average maximum temperatures nearing 45 °C (113 °F) in the Guadiana valley by 2100, which is the current average in the hottest places of the Sahara.

The area is commonly known as the "bread basket" of Portugal, a region of vast open countryside with undulating plains and rich fertile soil. With very few exceptions all the major towns are mainly reliant on agriculture, livestock and forestry. There are several types of traditional cheeses, wines and smoked hams and sausages made in the Alentejo region, among others: Queijo Serpa, Queijo de Évora and Queijo de Nisa (PDO cheeses); Vinho do Alentejo and Vinho do Redondo (wines); and presunto (smoked ham). Marble, cork, olive oil and mining industries are other important activities in the region and tourism is expected to still have growth potential. The Alqueva Dam is an important irrigation and hydroelectricity generation facility which supports a part of the Alentejo's economy.

The region is the home of the world's most important area for the growing of cork. Cork-oak, known in Portugal as "sobreiro", has been grown commercially in the region for the past 300 years, with the areas between the trees typically given over to grazing, or on the more productive soils, to the growing of citrus fruit, vines or olives. As a consequence, a uniquely rich and varied ecosystem has developed. The bark of the cork-oak is still harvested by teams of men using locally made hand-axes. No mechanical method has yet been invented that will allow the harvest to be achieved as effectively. The stripping of the bark is performed only in midsummer, when the bark can be removed more easily. The cork-oak is the only tree known that will allow this regular stripping of bark without damage. The harvest of one mature tree provides sufficient bark to produce about 4,000 wine bottle corks. The industry provides employment for about 60,000 workers.

FOOTBALL IN PORTUGAL

Portugal is a football mad country, with the country divided up between the giants of FC Porto, Benfica and Sporting as the clubs who have overwhelmingly won the majority of all compeititions ever disputed in the country. In fact when you break Portugal up into the historical regions of Portugal, outside of the regions of Lisbon (Estremadura) and Porto (Douro), there has barely been any success outside of this region, with just a few cups going to Beira Mar and Academica of the Beira region.

Of the regions that have won nothing, the Alentejo is perhaps the the region that has been able to make the least progress over the years. Algarve have had longstanding top division status with the likes of Portmimonense and Farense. Madeira have both Maritimo and Nacional that while winning nothing have been able to get to Europe and Maritimo remains one of the largest clubs in Portugal. Even little Acores has had Santa Clara in and around the top division.

Alentejo by contract has not had the same sucess

BEST OF ALENTEJO

Lusitano Ginásio Clube, MHIH, also commonly known as Lusitano de Évora (abbrev. Lusit. Évora), is a centenary sports club club based in Évora, that competes in Serie D of Campeonato de Portugal, third tier of Portuguese football. Founded November 11, 1911 by a group of high school and commercial school youngsters, in the house of professor Dâmaso Simões at Rua das Fontes, No. 3 in Évora as Lusitano Académico, it subsequently became Lusitano Futebol and finally Lusitano Ginásio Clube in 1925. The club's home ground is the Campo Estrela in Évora, purchased in 1931.

Lusitano GC entered the 1952–53 Primeira Divisão, finishing up 7th in their first season ever. The club spent 14 consecutive seasons in the Primeira Divisão, its major period of success in the 1950s and 1960s, earning an honorable 5th place in 1956/57, and reaching the semi-finals of the Taça de Portugal twice. After relegation in 1966 the club went through a period of decline, never regaining access to the Portuguese top flight ever again and even descending to regional championships. The club is still today in the top 30 of teams with the most presences in the Portuguese League.

Lusitano establish a SAD (Sociedade Anónima Desportiva) in 2016 and won the 2018/2019 Liga Century 21-Porta do Alentejo, thus earning promotion back to national football.

Sporting Clube Campomaiorense more commonly known as Campomaiorense was a Portuguese football club from Campo Maior, Portalegre District. The club was founded on the 1 July 1926.The club currently plays at the Estádio Capitão Cesar Correia which holds a seating capacity of 7500.The club has played in Portugal's top football division, the Primeira Liga, for five seasons and reached the 1999 Taça de Portugal final.

Campomaiorense is part of the Portalegre Football Association, which is the football association in charge of the Portalegre district's football matters. In its entire history, the club has won eight major trophies: the Portuguese Second Division in the 1991–92 season, the Liga de Honra in the 1996–97 season, the AF Portalegre First Division on four occasions (1962–63, 1969–70, 1971–72, 2011–12), the Campeonato de Portalegre in 1946 and the AF Portalegre Supertaça in the 2011–12 season. The club for all intents and purposes is now defunct and no longer participates in the Distritais divisions.

O Elvas Clube Alentejano de Desportos is a football club based in Portalegre, Alentejo. It was founded in 1947 when the team S.L. Elvas and S.C. Elvas fused. Sport Lisboa e Elvas (founded in 1925) and O Elvas C.A.D. spent several years in the Portuguese Liga, the main tier in the Portuguese football league system. Nowadays it plays in the Portalegre Regional Championships.

In it's history on the following clubs have ever played in the Portuguese top division Campomaiorense (defunct), Luistano de Evora, O Elvas, SL Elvas. Clearly the region lags behind the rest of the country.

THE JOB

We are going to put Alentjano football on the map, through the clubs of the region. I am only allowed to manage clubs from the region, in an attempt to finally put the clubs of the region on the map and make the region the footballing powerhouse of Portugal.

I will likely have to bring some clubs up to top Portuguese standard and then move on to other clubs and bring them up, so that we have multiple clubs challenging, and I will have to hand off clubs I build up to "hopefully" capable hands whom can continue to challenge at the top table of Portuguese football. Anyway that is the goal and we will have a long way to go to even challenge the top Lisbon and northern clubs, let alone to have any chance of taking them over.

CURRENT POSITION

The table below shows the size of the task. Portugal is split into its rough regions of antiquity, with Estremadura, Douro/Minho/Tras-os-Montes, Beira, Alentejo, Algarve, Madeira and Acores.

Best of luck, although it's going to  take a while! I'd have thought you would start with Vasco da Gama though :)

Thanks! At the start of the game in a test I did, they were expected to finish higher in the league than Vasco da Gama, so in theory are the best team from the Alentejo.

MOURA AC (Introduction)

Moura is located in the South of Portugal, not far from the Spanish border and east of the Guadiana River.

TownViewa.jpg

The town is certainly beautiful and has it's own castle. The population is approximately 16,000 people and is famous for having one Europe's largest solar panel arrays.

Our avatar for this game will be Manuel de Avis. The 20 year old manager looking to put Alentejo football on the map.

065c28351c0172fde909b144d622817d.png

We are starting with no experience and no coaching badges, which seems about appropriate for the challenge. We will have to work our way up.

2c848d3bc1af93af5bdd246ca8a85dfc.png

The club have a few local competition wins and distrital wins, but nothing major, as was expected.

7cc1cb46191d65c372fb88d877223047.png

The club have remained in the division for a few seasons now, our job is to at least be able to do that in our first season and hopefully kick on from there.

ecef9d91d6d7e2e32acb9dacee8c51af.png

We have very modest finances at the club, unsure if at this level it is going to be a problem, we will have to see which way the money goes this season.

86ce78dfb84903a409655c3fcbc2a041.png

The main squad does not look too bad for the level.

1d2b13c1b5d260c12b508ec687c2ebc8.png

Miguel Abreu looks like the standout, he is on loan from Gil Vicente and will certainly come in handy at this level. I am still unsure whether there are main areas we will look to improve the team.

Viola is a necessary addition as we had no left footed strikers, which I feel is necessary when deploying two strikers, so that they link up well. Viola is decent for us, if not amazing, he is on a pay as you play contract so it doesn't really affect us much bringing him in.

The odds are out for the season and since there will be a playoff at the end from the groups all the teams are considered against one another from all the groups, we are 55th most likely to go up at odds of 96. Unfortunately our two Alentejo compatriots are 70th and 71st in Vasco da Gama and Redondense. Alentejo football bringing up the rear is expected.

MOURA AC (Pre-Season Friendlies 2018)

Our friendlies could really have not gone better as we beat everyone we should beat and got some great draws against Liga Pro Farense and Oliveirense and even a draw against Liga NOS Maritimo. We look in good shape for the coming season and I feel we may well perform better than our media prediction.

We have started the new season very well, with two very big wins against sides that we were underdogs against. I am very happy with the team.

We are top of the table after two games played, which is looking very nice at the moment. Vasco da Gama and Redondense (Alentejo teams) have not started in the best way with a draw each so far from their games, hopefully they can stay up this season.

We drop our first points of the season away to Sporting Ideal whom are right down at the bottom of the league so that was a little disappointing, if not totally unexpected, still though all round it has been a pretty good month for us.

We remain top of the league equal on points with Real and 1 Dezembro. The other Alentejo teams in the division are still right down the bottom of the league and still looking for their first win of the campaign.

Despite the loss in the cup we continued our fantastic league form, that is changing our season from one of trying to survive to one where we have to be taken seriously as promotion candidates.

MOURA AC (November 2018)

We have had another good month, and it could have been very difficult for us as we went away to 2nd and 3rd and played Pinhalnovense who had knocked us out of the cup, but in the end we rose to the challenge and got 10 out of 12 points, which I would have taken at the start of the month.

422acec6f5abef7c5c166829b7f9e7bc.png

We sit top of the league, 4 points clear of Real whom we just played away and got a draw. Angrense and Olhanense are now 9 points behind, so we are now looking very good for securing one of the playoff spots.

MOURA AC (December 2018)

2ab0defff0d1ad78b22ebf28dbb36cea.png

December has been a good month for us despite losing the final game before the Christmas break, this actually also ended our unbeaten record in the league too, but in the other games we managed to win them all, so I would have definately taken this outcome from the month.

bf4d948e6f20ce5e867776a33ce779d8.png

Despite the loss we are well ahead at the top of the division, having opened up an 11 point lead. Short of some very bad form in the backside of the year, we look like we could win Group D of the Campeonato Nacional.

It was another loss as we resumed the season after the Christmas break to Olimpico do Montijo, but after that we got things back in order and were perfect for the remainder of the month, getting win after win.

da46e0adaf51ea8eeadc81f3b7327877.png

Barring a miracle, we look to have pretty much sewn up Group D, as we now have a 16 point lead over 2nd placed Olhanense. Of course that will not guarantee promotion as we will still need to get through the playoffs, but at the moment we look good.

Another good month for us, as we complete 3 wins and lose away to Pinhalnovense like we did in the cup.

e36fe2734b33209785c0fae19551fc76.png

We look like the Group D Champions elect at this stage as we are 7 fixtures away from the end of the regular season and are 13 points clear of Olhanense in 2nd place, and 16 points clear of Real outside the playoff places. At the other end of the Redondense have confirmed their awful season will end in relegation and another Alentejo team falls back to the District leagues. Vasco da Gama are likely to follow them in the next month or so.

We end with another good run of form as we complete the month undefeated.

We secured top spot in Group D, winning the Group by 16 points from Olhanense after a fantastic season. Unfortunately this counts for little as the playoffs will decide whether we go up to the Liga Pro. We will start at the Quarter Finals and with three spots in the league above we will have to get at least to the semi finals to get to a potential promotion spot.

The draw will see us face Olhanense in the semi finals. They finished second in our group, 16 points behind us so you would think we would have the beating of them but who knows, these are one off ties and anything can happen. The first leg will be at their ground, where we lost 4-3 in the regular season.

We will be playing Lusitania FC Lourosa in the Final of the Campeonato Nacional. They finished first in Group B and will be tough opposition, although we have been drawn as the home team in the one off game, so we have every chance of winning the Campeonato Nacional.

We smash Lusitania 4-1 to win the Campeonato Nacional. In what was billed to be a likely win for Lusitania we through the odds book out the window as we dominated the game and deserved our win.

MOURA AC (Squad Overview 2019)

Rilly has been very good for us between the sticks, i doubt I will be looking for another goalkeeper in the next season. He averaged 7.07 which is pretty good for a goalkeeper.

13b9b949cbe35b0585987437582cf09c.png

Jeferson Souza is the backup keeper, and has not played this season, he is a decent backup to Rilly.

2a8409d5c684e57a7a5c3ae0cdcd4969.png

Mamadi Balde is 40 years old and did not play this season and is retiring at the end of the season so not much to talk about.

8dec63e442565d71ff4ecb0a97a0ce8d.png

Lucas Santos has been the main man at left centre-back. He has been a mainstay this season in that spot and has averaged 7.16 which is not a bad rating at all.

95adaa9b13d6b4047738c78b6c82e296.png

Simao Junior has been brilliant at right centre-back, averaging 7.28. At the tender age of 20 years old I feel he may have a role at the club even if we do strengthen in the coming transfer window.

c194cb860d9e0cba6b683d023aec6424.png

Bebe, has been a mainstay at left back for us and has provided some fantastic performances averaging 7.34 and chipping in with 6 goals from that position. I am very happy with him.

fda250e109a1208c1ed4bdc96690e8d8.png

Daniel Coutinho, got injured and lost his place to new arrival Bebe, he has played a bit part this season but has been a capable backup averaging 7.09 this season at the right back spot.

d5e2aeb7bdcfe0c85f320272b466e406.png

Igor Balde emerged, when we experimented early with Bebe at left back and him at right back and we have not looked back since. He has chipped in with goals and assists this season and averaged a great 7.51 this season. He looks a really good player for us.

e2671837fec36cbbb8970f97c6777ef4.png

Vasco Teixeira has been deployed primarily as a subsitute and can play a variety of positions in the formation, which is helpful. He has not set the world alight averaging 6.88, but a lot of that probably has to do with his limited playing time. At the age of 20, he has plenty more to offer us I feel.

862d16c6127a8b156950c20ac9a2d238.png

To Miguel is a club icon and he has primarily come in as a sub, at 40 years old, the legs have mostly gone and he is retiring at the end of the season. He has averaged 6.64 this season, so I can see why he has decided to call it a day.

936e229c7a991336c4b7568ff3fbf4cf.png

Bruno Gomes is 35 years old and has not played much this season. He is bad trainer so has declined probably more because of that. He is retiring at the end of the season, which is fine with me.

ed38ed9727234ef1da7001c1b02d45e3.png

Miguel Abreu is on loan from Gil Vicente and we will miss him as he has been brilliant in that difficult DMC spot. He averaged 7.08 which is pretty good in a spot where the dark arts of breaking up play are required. He is probably the best player at the club so he will definately be missed.

e846b5e7d32858f06db1e050f8a4f288.png

Antoninho Silva, has been mostly a sub this season and I am unsure he will be at the club next season. He is on a fair bit of money and I think we can do better. He averaged 6.93, which is not bad, but I feel he is likely to leave this summer.

89399b7fd5c3e29c5fcf1f42ae9b32a5.png

Joseph Amoah has been really good for us in centre-midfield this season as he averaged 7.15 and contributed plenty of goals this season mostly from the penalty spot. He is a good player and has even started being called up to Ghana U21's which shows he has come on a lot this season. He is one I definitely want to keep at the club.

2af9cfcea094dfc79419524d602ad0b5.png

Patrick Igwe, the Nigerian has been deployed on both wings and has been brilliant this season as he contributed 13 goals and 13 assists this season as he produced some top performances for us averaging 7.48. I think he will be key in the coming seasons, especially if he continues to improve.

6a401957e3eca05bfda364703ab78241.png

Daniel Andrade, at just 19 years of age, he has been a creative fulcrum on the left hand side for us as he contributed 15 assists this season, and averaged 7.46. Again another player who can improve a lot and really become a Moura legend in the future you feel.

81346f543ff8672233fb100c3bdd4886.png

Martin Kuittinen has come into the club and delivered big style with eye catching performances and 13 goals and 11 assists to his name, and an average of 7.57 showing how well he has played. The issue is, his wages are pretty hefty, and I am unsure whether he is worth keeping at this stage or whether there are better options out there. He is young and can improve a lot, so I am undecided. We will have to make a decision soon as his contract is almost up.

acec7b32f85e38be76bc66f8e5204de6.png

Sabri Barradas, has not played a game this season and is really not up to standard, he will be leaving the club this summer.

816fd0798958d98d121105f80d552c74.png

Pedro Diniz has been brilliant up front as he bagged 19 goals this season and averaged 7.14, all while only being 20 years old, again he is one we will keep, but we have to be wary that coming up is a big step up in class and I wonder whether Diniz can cope.

469a90a34b5517061bf5358df7692461.png

Viola came in because we did not have a left footed striker, which we like to employ on the right striker spot. He has been extremely good bagging 22 goals, as he poached goals left, right and centre and rolled back the years on a long career. He will be retiring and to be honest I already had plans to replace him due to this age. However he can retire with his head held high after a brilliant final season in football.

3198121360b7b298317dbec9ce87d23b.png

Kaina is the backup striker and he has done well when asked to come in as he bagged 7 goals this season. He averaged a 7.00 this season which is good for a guy mostly deployed as a sub. We already renewed his contract as he is a decent player to have around although his long term future depends realistically on how well we do and who we can bring in.

Our second signing is in the right wing position as we bring in veteran winger Jorge Goncalves to the club, he comes in from Valadares Gaia from the district leagues. Hopefully he can make the step up, but he has a lot of quality and I think he will do well for us.

The signings keep coming as we secure Academica young centre-back Hugo Ribeiro, he had been on loan at Redondense and so had a pretty bad season, but he is left footed and will fit in on the left centre-back spot and I think we can use him well in that position.
