[FM2019] - LLM - Unemployed Vol 13 - Na liga dos ultimos

Recommended Posts

Chapter 1 - Prior to the start

Banner1.png

Most of you probably dont know me, but I have been doing these save/stories for close to a decade in the portuguese CM/FM forum. For some years now, I have a "series" called Unemployed, which is now in the 13th volume. Volume number 12 (in FM17) ended 2 weeks ago and it played from 2017 till 2097. If you want to check it out, use the following link - http://www.cmportugal.com/index.php?/topic/190134-fm2017-llm-unemployed-vol-12/

In the past I used to start Unemployed but this time round I am starting already with a team of my choice in the 6th tier of Portuguese Football.

I am born and raised in Lisbon, so there is where I am starting my journey (as always with no experience and as a sunday league footballer)

The rules are simple: LLM with the exception of the third party files (since I need those to start in such lower divisions). The database is made of 83 leagues from 31 countries, including all where language is an official language with the exception of East Timor.

The objective is the same as in my other saves of the Unemployed series: conquer the nation, then Europe, followed by the champions league in all other continents.

This save is simply the english quasi-translation of the one i am doing in the Portuguese CM/FM forum. For those that are wondering about the title, Liga dos Ultimos, was a tv show in Portugal where reporters would go to cover matches of teams playing in regional amateur leagues of Portugal...it was more about covering the people and players than the match itself and it was extremly funny...

Wish me luck!

No Cheating

Spoiler

Although technically a guideline, this is so integral to LLM that it can be considered an absolute hard-and-fast ‘rule’. Think of these as guidelines to this rule.

There follows a list of some of the things considered ‘cheating’ in LLM, but the maxim “If you have to ask if you’re cheating then you very probably are” is a pertinent one and should be borne in mind whenever there is confusion over what is and isn’t considered cheating

Using other people’s tactics or training schedules.

The tactics and training schedules you use should be entirely your own work. Real-life managers do not give tactical advice to each other. Further, the point of LLM is in doing things yourself and getting tactical or training advice from tactical forums (or downloading same) is considered against the spirit of LLM.

Getting advice on which players to buy from anywhere outside the gameworld.

Real-life managers use their scouts, who in turn use their network to discover players. No real-life manager has access to a higher dimensional all-knowing ‘player forum’ where every detail of every player can be revealed and passed down to them. It simply isn’t realistic, so it’s cheating, plain and simple.

Use of editors or any utility designed to display more information than that which the game provides.

If a real-life manager could create themselves a wonderkid with god-like tools or give themselves a mega-rich sugar daddy and millions of pounds, I’m sure they would. But they can’t, so doing the same is also forbidden to LLM players.

Quitting the game without saving.

A real life manager cannot quit the game, without saving, after losing a match and therefore neither should we.

Using quirks of the AI, loopholes, bugs and/or strange things the game throws up to gain an unfair advantage.

You play this way because you want to play the game realistically, without cheating – presumably nobody’s forcing you at gunpoint… – so you should be able to recognise when something doesn’t look/feel right (e.g. being offered an international job when your reputation doesn’t warrant it, offering players full-time contracts on part-time wages, or making use of some kind of ‘bug’ as an infallible way of winning games or getting goals…). As always, let your conscience be your guide.

Further detail on cheating (or how not to) is available here.

Scouting and the Player Search function.

Despite the oft-used justification that managers use internet searches and the like in order to find out-of-contract or transfer listed players, none of these methods provide anywhere near as much information, flexibility or are as exhaustive as the Player Search function. It is so easily open to abuse that, after enormous amounts of debate, it has been concluded that this method is too easily used to ‘cheat’ and gain unfair advantage and therefore should not be used.

Basically, scouts are your prime realistic means of highlighting players to sign for your club, so use them.

There are, however, more ways to discover players than solely from your scout’s searches:

In-game media news items (including player of the month, top scorer charts, etc.) – if a player is mentioned in the in-game media you can send a scout to have a look at them. Players are advised to use their discretion when utilising in-game charts to highlight players to scout as not all may be entirely realistic.

When playing a team, if an opposition player plays well against you, then it would be acceptable to send a scout to find out more about them.

Recommendations from your own players and staff.

Some less zealous LLaMas may use the player search screen sparingly in emergencies to find transfer listed or ‘available for loan’ players, but generally, beyond the first season especially, the search screen should not be used – let your scouts do the job they are paid for. If, in a dire emergency, you feel you must use this screen, ensure that it is filtered realistically (e.g. no attribute searches).

In all cases the player should be given the once over at least by your scouts before making an offer, unless…

If a player has been released from his contract and you are unable to scout them, it is acceptable to invite them for a trial and have your Assistant Manager or coaches look them over.

In the real footballing world, scouts are extremely important to any club and the guidelines on scouting are there in order to replicate this, including the difficulties with ‘crap’ scouts or not having any at all. A personal LLM take on scouting is discussed in more detail under the “Detail: Scouting” page.

Staff Search limitations

The job centre should provide a reasonably realistic list of candidates, so staff should be recruited using this method. However, this being only a game, should you not find any suitable candidates within a reasonable time-frame, then it is considered acceptable to resort to the staff search screen when all else fails.

Feeder Clubs in the UK and Germany

SI are using the terms Feeder/Parent club to apply to a range of ‘affiliations’ which could cause some confusion. Applied literally, it is expressly against German and English FA regulations for clubs to have official feeder/parent relationships with other German or UK teams respectively. Apparently, SI have taken this into consideration to an extent (i.e. first options won’t be available), but to some LLaMas it’s a very contentious issue, to the extent that many cancel these links as soon as possible. In any case, care should be taken that the use of any affiliation is kept within realistic limits (e.g. no overuse of loanees). If you need clarification on any issues related to this feature, please don’t hesitate to ask in the forum.

Chapter 2 - Between Olivais and Encarnacao

Banner1.png

So in this 13th volume of the series, I am not starting unemployed, but really on the sixth tier of portuguese football...most of you will not know this club, so I present you, Sport Lisboa e Olivais of the 3rd tier of Lisbon District league. To me this is the ideal place to start as my grandparents house is just 300 meters down the road in Encarnacao. Nowadays unfortunately they arent amoung us anymore, but my brother lives there and at least I dont have to spend my zero euros salary on lunch!

Unemployed-13-Olivais.png

My presentation to the press was... what you would expect from a complete amateur club, that cannot even afford to play at night due to the elecrical bill. The club has always been better known for snooker and ilegal card games than anything else...but take a look as the image speaks volumes...

201801131819x66-D9.jpg

At least the Branca Lucas stadium, not being the state of the art field, is better than most of the teams in the league that do not even have grass. The only thing left is to meet the players and understand how an unexperieced 30ish can take the team higher up the ladder.

lxi-373-01.jpg

Without any relevant glories and titles, the "Caveiras" have been a bit higher up in the past and my objective in the next couple of seasons is to push for a promotion and take the team back to its best records of the 80s. The only other thing to take notice is the big rivalry of the team down the road...ADCEO. When we meet them this will be a high intensity game full of 70 year old drunk spectators that can cause trouble...

Chapter 3 - Seaso I (18/19) Kids stay out of drugs

Banner1.png

As all of you that play in these low level leagues know, there are plenty of players available, but its hard to find a single guy that can make a difference. As I did not know a thing about the team and its players, I asked my assistant to give us a heads up on how good this team with an average age of 18 years old was and what positions needed urgent upgrades. No surprised there as almost all positions lacked quality...

Transf-1.png

As you can see the scouts where head on in getting reports and I did hire only national based players with scout grade of 70 or above. By the mid of the season other players came along, but we will get to that lates. Here in the amateur leagues, since the players have amateur contracts, the biggest challenge but at the same time also the biggest oportunity is keeping the best guys from leaving...

24663063.jpg

Playing in a 4-2-3-1 formation, we did most of the pre-season in our field (Branca Lucas) with the exception of a close trip to Catujal. To be honest, i was expecting worse here. We have some good wins against closer same tier rivals and although we had a few avoidable losses (against Aguais de Camarate and Mem Martins), we also managed to lose against Boavista by 2 goals, which for a team like ours, is a great result. Wel...at least when the kids are on the football field, they are not doing drugs!

Chapter 4 - Lisbon Icons

Banner1.png

Despite being on the sixth tier of portuguese football, the reality is that mostly due to financial problems in the recent past, some of the clubs we are facing here, are true icons of the city and even of national football, with amoung other things participations in european competitions and some cups of Portugal. Obviouly there are also some teams here that have close to no history, but all in all it is a return to the past.

Following the fixtures, we started with the cup of Lisbon where we faced another historic team, Carcaveles. We got away with a win in the penalty kicks but ended up eleminated in the second round, in a game against a team two divisions above us.

Fix-1-1.png

Finally we arrive in the league and I have to be honest in saying that I was not expecting a 5-0 win in the first game, even if this was played against the B team of a club who isnt very high up either. The fist w and only losses come against the two most relevant teams of the league, Estrela da Amadora who was in the 1st tier for most of the 90s and early 2000s and Belenenses, who just last year prior to a legal battle was still in the Superleague. Still after 9 games, we sit on top of the table and even if we ave one more game than Belenenses, by itself this is already more than I was expecting.  Lookout for another historic team, Operario de Lisboa!

Chapter 5 - To win in Blem but lose Vitor Andre

Banner1.png

We were doing good, 1st place with one game more, but the beginning of November was not kind with a draw against Belas, which sent us to second place behind Belenenses. The next few games were tight wins and after the winter pause, the players came back with too many Christmas sweets on their stomachs and after an already bad draw against Trajouce, we lost 4-1 at home with a team of the middle of the table…

Fix-1-2.png

Unforgivable and it was about time that the players and I had a talk. That talk ended up making the team a bit better and we showed the team making 6 straight wins, conceding goals in only one of those games. What we were not expecting is that one of our best players would leave on a free transfer to a team like Pampilhoense….Vitor Andre had been receiving offers for quite some time and unfortunately on amateur level, there was nothing else we could have done…

 Vitor-Andre.png

And this exactly when we were going to play our next game against the best team in the series. Truth be told, at least on that game and the next one against Carcavelos, Vitor was not missed as both games were won and the goal difference was not bigger by pure luck. 10 games left and it seems that the promotion will not escape us, now the only thing that we still need to fight for is the title…but we are not depending only on our results and who knows if more starters will not want to leave also…

Chapter 6 - Promotion to the sound of Portela!

Banner1.png

Despite not being at our best level in the final portion of the league…I have to admit that by mid-May with promotion already secured, the team gave up pressuring Belenenses and after an unfair defeat against the team of Trajouce, the truth is that we ended up doing an amazing season with good games against teams that on paper were much better than us. This end of the season, basically we were carried by the Stricker Rodolfo Portela (that I will have a hard time keeping in the team unfortunately)

Fix-1-3.png

Belenenses ends up being a fair winner and in the final of the league against the winner of the A group, they won without any problem. Estrela ends up being the biggest disappointment, finishing up in the 9th place, while us and Operario end up being the surprise teams. But this promotion is also a lot due to the young players…

 Class-1-3.png

Treinador-do-Ano.png

Individually, I did win the best coach of the season but it was the youngsters that had the best of it, winning their sub-19 group with a good distance to the second place, getting promoted to the u-19s division above. Also two of the 3 guys in the top young player come from Olivais and both Vitor Domingues as well as Diogo Silva will be important pieces for preparing our next season…unless someone gets them for free…

Chapter 7 - Season II (19/20) without Portela

Banner1.png

I had already mentioned and predicted in the last update that Rodolfo Portela, one of the biggest if not the biggest talent of our team, would not be around for long in a lower division like ours...the only thing that I did not expect is that the departure would be so soon. Portela goies directly from our team that just got promoted to the 5th tier of portuguese football, to a historical team playing in the second division. At 17 years old, all I could say was "thank you and all the best...".

Adeus-Portela.png

But unfortunately it was not only Portela that left, despite being our biggest loss, other players also left  on free transfers, including Luis Alves and a bit latter down the season, Ain Jin. All of them left for teams in divisions above ours. So...we had to tap the market...we knew that the trio that left was hard to substitute so we had to go through a lot of differnent scouting reports and trials, to find the right players, that hopefully will be substitutes of quality.

Transf-2.png

Finally we had to go through a pre-season that was long and full of games. The official competition only starts in mid-September and I wanted to have a strong collective team and with a very good chemistry and morale to attack a season that might go again to the promotion battle. We had a lot of good games, specially against teams like Torreense. The only non-wins came against top teams like Beira-Mar or Barreirense…with the exception of the draw against Trafaria who was the only bad result…but I think we are ready!

Chapter 8 - Perfection without An Jin

Banner1.png

First of all let me tell you that dispite going one level up the portuguese ladder, the level of the amateur teams in this division are not much better than in the previous level. If we take out our biggest rivals of the neighborhood, ADCEO and another historic of portuguese football that unfortunately was not able to keep up with the finances of football of the XXI century, we were lucky. Most bigger clubs of the division ended up in the other series (as did Belenenses). That said, despite losing some good players, we would still be able to fight for another promotion. It was with An Jin that substituted Portela in the attack that we managed to win the first 5 league games with two thin margin wins against the neighborhood rivals and the powerhouse that Atletico is in this level.

Fix-2-1.png

But as you could see from the previous update, by mid November we also lost An Jin on a free transfer to another bigger and wealthier club and by the lack of options in attack, I thought that this could be a downturn for the team... but then Diogo Godinho, another young player, came to save the team and by the end of November we counted 8 wins in 8 games for the league and a good point difference already to second placed Tojal. We had also passed 2 ties in the Lisbon Cup, giving us hope in that competition too. I dont want to have a party yet, but with still 22 games to go, it seems that a new promotion is more than possible.

Chapter 9 - Without a captian but with a lot of youngsters

Banner1.png

The players kept on leaving the team, every single time we belived that finally we had found another star to sell shirts and lead the teams, after a few good games...he was gone. This time it was our captain, Diogo Godinho, man that was the midfield boss of the team that deserted to a team two tiers above just after a few good games...the only thing that has saved us, is the quantity of good young players that we manage to bring to the main team with success. In reality in terms of games, I can barely complaint...besides a draw against our main persuers in the league, 17 games were needed for our team to taste a defeat for the fisrt time this season.

Fix-2-2.png

Unfortunately that defeat was against the only team we really did not want to lose. ADCEO as I explained already is our main neighborhood rivals and it is kind of akward that our only defeat after 20 games is against this team who is also not doing so well in the league (26 points behind us). Besides this, we basically can order the champions t-shirts since the third place is already 20 points away with only 30 to play for. Interesting is also how well we are doing in the Lisbon cup. After another two wins against Atletico (surprisingly desastrous) and Atletico da Malveira, we are already going to the semi-finals.

Chapter 10 - This looked too easy!

Banner1.png

With the promotion almost sure, we only wanted now to make sure we got the first place in the series so that we could play the final of the Divisao de Honra de Lisboa against the winners of the A series and be crowned champions. This turned out to be an easy feat, with 7 games to spare the win against Bobadelense was enough to assure the first place in series. Much of this final series of excellent results is mostly due to the fact that we managed to contain the bleeding of good players leaving the side at zero cost. Besides the league we also had our eyes set on the Lisbon Cup

Fix-2-3.png

Since we had managed to get to the semis, why not gun for the win on the competition. Nevertheless we had in front of us Alta de Lisboa, a team with various players that we would like to have on our squad, won the second leg away by a goal and in May ended up winning the cup. The defeat against Alta de Lisboa ended up putting the team through a small bad period where we ended up losing the only points in the second round agains a team that also ended up overachieving with the 3rd place in the league...Aguias da Musgeira (a club of drug addicts i guess). In the end we finished the series with 30 advantage over Tojal and went to the final, where we faced...who else? Belem of course!

Class-2-3.png

The game against Belenenses was one of those football fests that could have ended going either way. We ended up having the lucky star and won 4-3 to claim the title! Next year we have to play in the top division of Lisbon (4th tier of Portuguese football). I am also very happy with the u-19s that despite not having achieved promotion, did very well and are one of the reasons we managed to keep good results despite losing key players!

Chapter 11 - Epoca III (20/21) Good Sons always return home

Banner1.png

It can look funny but the best players that we managed to acquire in the pre-season end up being players that have been in the team in the past and that left for clubs higher up for a zero fee. Well the transfer strategy was simply to look fo the best players of the season in our division of last year and try the return of the players that left in the past. That is exactly the case of Rafael Bento and Miguel Pereira...and I am hopping that as the season progresses more players return.

Transf-3.png

We also ended up doing another long pre-season with good results. It is obvious that looking at the teams we played against, there are no giants of portuguese football and maybe the only real powerhouse is the team of Beira-Mar who had better days..but the objective was really to give this team a morale boost that will maybe enable us to make a good start in the season. 4th tier for the first time and I am hopping for a quiet season in the middle table spots, to also prepare a team to attack the title in season after this one.

Chapter 12 - Real Competition

Banner1.png

The first division of Lisbon despite being one level above what we were used to, was composed of some good teams but also some unknowns. Again, in front of us we had some teams with name in Portugal, like CF Benfica or Lorinhanense, rising starts of the national league like Sintra Football and old fellows of ours…Belenenses. Nevertheless, we also were facing team like Negrais or Coutada that were even more obscure than us.  And we did have a good start of the league with Diogo Godinho scoring a lot of goals we managed to win the first two games, with Belenenses (almost full stadium) and Negrais…

Fix-3-1.png

But nothing good last and we quickly saw that this year would not be the walk of glory of last season. We quickly lost 2 and drew 1 game in the following 4 matches and we were also out in the first round of the Lisbon Cup after a defeat against Carregado, which we should really had won. In the end of this last third of the league we managed to get better in the back and finished the series with 3 wins. Seeing this I believe the team will be fighting for promotion, but it will not be a walk in the parc this season…that’s for sure!

Chapter 13 - The historics came knocking but An Jin Returned!

Banner1.png

I start off this chapter on a more personal note. Despite not considering manager posts in other clubs (as the save is not intented for that and I have still a lot to do with my Olivais), its always good to see our name being referenced and invited for interviews with historic teams of the second division as are the cases of Farense and Penafiel. Besides that, I keep the strategy of trying to hire back the good players that left the club for free in recent seasons. In the middle of the season it was the time to get An Jin back after more than one year playing somewhere else, I just wish that he will be on form to help on the attack for the rest of the season!

Interview-Faresnse-3-2.png

Interview-Penafiel-3-2.png

Volta-An-Jin-3-2.png

In terms of games in the middle of the season we kept on facing higher challenges than the ones from previous seasons in divisions below. Despite good wins against teams like Sintra Football or Oeiras, we lost points against Santa Iria, CF Benfica, Alta de Lisboa and we did have small trashing from Belenenses, maybe a sort of vengeance from last season...and this results in the team being three points away from Belenenses at the top and with direct disadvantage, now that there are only 10 games left. There is still a lot of games left but for the final strech of the season we need to be perfect if we really want to fight for the title!

Chapter 14 - Promoted by the minimal margin!

Banner1.png

Despite not being in the expectations of the season, the truth was that we were 3 points away from the title and the promotion, so we might as well fight for it. Ten games to go and to achieve that promotion, we needed to be perfect, but that was far from what happened. The first 5 games were disastrous and we only made 5 points. By weekday 25 we were in 4th place and for me the season was over, buuth then we began winning...first agains Sintra, then CF Benfica, Loures...

Fix-3-3.png

Oeiras and in the final weekday we were in the third place and needing a win against surprise team Santa Iria and that Belenenses would not win their game. So Belem did lose against Tojal at home and we had a single goal from returned An Jin, victory agaisnt Santa Iria that gave us the title. I was as surprised as everyone else, not only because we were tipped to fight against relegation but also because at weekday 25, it looked like we would not be fighting for much anymore. I also won for the 3rd time in a row the coach of the year title...but next year in the CNS (3rd tier of portuguese football), I am expecting a much harder task!

Chapter 15 - Season IV (21/22) Players wanted!

Banner1.png

We arrived in the CNS (third division of portuguese football) in a parachute...it was not in my plans to arrive so quickly at this level and the team was not prepared for it, so the pre-season was hectecic and complicated. Truth be told until October we did manage to hir a lot of talent, as you can see from the pic below, but non of thses players were targeted to be stars of the division. Maybe the attacker Nhaga and Joao Viana can mak the difference in one game or another, but clearly this season I am expecting a long hard battle to not be relegated back to the distritais. In that sense at least, we do have a team!

Transf-4.png

We managed to do some friendlies again, but this time, things did not start so well with a defeat by 3-0 against our youth team...with a lot of new faces, I could feel that the dinamics we just not there...we did lose against Academica (which was normal) and the rest of the games we composed mainly of wins...but in non of these last games did I see a sparkle in the game. We have a lot of work ahead of us and I am seriously worried...

Thanks, well yes in cmportugal page you can get the full pyramid file...although the lowest you can start is on the 7th tier (only one division there 3rd Porto district league), I did start my save in the 6th tier because Lisbon district does not go down a division more

Chapter 16 - CNS level difficulty!

Banner1.png

Once we arrived in this 3rd tier we knew that the difficulties would be much bigger than what we were used to in the past. Actually the beginning of the competitive season might make it look easier than it is since we had 10 points in the first 4 games. But looking closer we can see that these games if we take out the first match against Vilafranquense, were far from being against top teams. Further down the series we had difficulties against Eletrico Ponte de Sor and despite good results against Oriental and Marinhense, the fact is that up to now if it wasnt for Daniel Nhaga goals (by far our best acquisition), we would not be so well placed in the table!

Fix-4-1.png

So just to make it clear, at the moment after just 8 games we are doing quite well in the league. But lets not party already since there are still a lot of games to be played and we have not yet played against the best teams of the division (mainly Torreense and Sacavanense). In terms of cups, the things did not go so well. In the Lisbon cup for the fisrt time we were out in the first round in a game against an old adversary of ours, that we should have won without much problem...in the Portugal cup we were also not able to win against Casa Pia, a team in our division...well **** the cups then!

Chapter 17 - In trouble!

Banner1.png

You could see already in the last update that I shared, that the team started having some difficulties, despite the good place on the table. Well, from there things just went downhill and the next 6 games ended all in defeats. Some of them were clearlzy against teams that are better than ours, but others, specially when our attacker Nhaga was under performing, where within our reach. That is when I changed a few players and mixed it up a bit in the tactics and in the next 8 we only lost a single game...

Fix-4-2.png

But after those 6 defeats it was unavoidable that the team would go down on the table and at the moment we are fighting the relagation battle. There are clearly 4 teams that will only be saved by a miracle and we are fighting with Idanhense, Benfica CB and Montijo to not get that last relegation place...There are still 14 games left till the end of the season, but I can see this only being a relagation battle right until the end. On a personal level, I am not able to get better as a coach, due to the financial situation of the club, which does not pay for my coching courses...but at least I am still recieving proposals from other clubs...this time it was Estoril from the second division that came knocking...and that I rejected,

Chapter 18 - Relegated in the last day!

Banner1.png

Despite the relative success we had in the end of the last series, quickly the good work of those two months went away with the terrible results and performances we had against both the teams on the top of the table as well as in the ones fighting for relagation in this last part of the leagues... The gods threw the dices and with two weekdays to go, the team was fighting with other two teams (Idanhense and Alcains) not to be in the last two relegations spots by the last weekday...and those two we would face in the last two games of the season!

Fix-4-3.png

In the first game at home we ended up drawing unfairly against Idanhense and from then on, we were not only dependent on ourselves to stay up. We had some luck and Alcains did not manage to make a single point agains Casa Pia in their second to last game. So last weekday was easy, we had to win against Alcains away (hardest portion) and Idanhense could not win against Torreense home.  So our team did the best and won by 3-0 but Idanhense against all odds won against Torreense and won the last spot in the league...we will go down to the 4th tier and face Belenenses again!

Hey what the hell are you doing here man. :D I've seen you around in CMPT.

The way that season finished was really harsh, looks like you were very successful the seasons before but then the step up to the division above was just too big? I trust you to get promoted back no problem.

Chapter 19 - Season V (22/23) - Welcome Keita, we need to go up again!

Banner1.png

Despite the relegation, we were able to keep most of our good players...exceptions were Babacar and Alexandre Serafim. We had to dive into the market and despite not having signed a lot of new players, we brough the most important thing: quality! From Sporting comes a young goalkeeper (Silva), from Vitoria de Setubal we secured 2 loans for the attacking midfield and on free transfers come the right defender Balde and the biggest signing this club has ever seen...the guinean international, Alhassane Keita, someone that is a blessing to have accepted a contract from our side!

Transf-5.png

Welcome-Keita-5.png

Meaning in the end we expect Keita to bring quality and goals to the team. He still was not able to demonstrate his skill yet, although he did score 3 goals in 6 games, but he is still adpating and there is still time to work and adapt. At least he already demonstrated the needed quality to score the goals we need to reach our objective this season...Promotion!

Chapter 20 - Again Belenenses!

Banner1.png

Back to the district league, we end up facing old friends of ours. The difference this time is basically that we will be fighting for the title instead of fighting for a place in the middle of the season. So as said, the biggest objective was to  get to CNS again as fast as possible...but the first 4 games were far from perfect. Keita was not playing as I was expected and we ended up drawing 3 games against teams we should have won easily. But then against Santa Iria something changed, the team started playing well and the goals started to fall....so finally we were on track...but...

Fix-5-1.png

Belenenses was again a challenge...out of all other games this was the one that we ended up losing points with... Specially bad was the fact that they were the ones in the first place in the league and now we are simply trailing... Well but there is still a lot of games to go this season and we are playing well, also in the lisbon cup we had a good start, although unconvincing we did win the first 2 games by a single goal. Of course this competition is not amazing and a big objective, but a nice to have!

Chapter 21 - Saint Keita!

Banner1.png

After the good first third of the season where things were already looking good, the second third was probably the best sequence of games and football played that I have lived through since I began this adventure in Olivais. More than the positive results, the team is also playing extremly well and in most games is demolishing the other teams. I conceed that defensively, the team is far from being perfect, but the attack has been a complete joy to watch...mostly due to our star Saint Keita and friends!

Fix-5-2.png

Only 8 games away from the end of the league, promotion is almost a reality. Belenenses after a good start, went completly downhill with a large series of bad results, so they are already 13 points away.... This means that at this point we are almost there and we need to concentrate now on getting new signings for next season and see if we can do something in the Lisbon cup, where afte a tight win in penalties on the round of 16 and a good win against our rivals in the quarter finals, we are close the final...

Chapter 22 - Back to CNS

Banner1.png

It ended up being much easier than anyone had anticipated in the biginning of the season. We already had a big advantage over Belenenses and after a few games we were virtual champions...and that was probably the biggest problem this season. With the promotion in the bag, the team relaxed and in the Lisbon Cup against a team of Santa Iria that was growing, we end up having some lousy games and being eliminated one game away from the final....

Fix-5-3.png

The end of the season was hard to go through, but we still ended up winning the league with 13 points difference for Santa Iria, showing that contrary to the first time that we were in this division (and struggled until the last game to achieve promotion), this time the team was ready to go up. With time already in March I started preparing the team for the CNS and I am expecting a hectic transfer market. Once more I was elected Manager of the season and this time I also had the best scorer (Keita) and the best player (Diogo Godinho).

hapter 23 - Epoca VI (23/24) - CNS second try!

Banner1.png

Ok so we were back in the third division of national football and the big objective of the season was exactly that we would not do the same we did 2 seasons ago, were if you remember well, we got relegated... For that and as I had already comented in the last post, due to the fact that mathematical promotion happened so early in the past season, the preparation for this one, started very early. Basically research was done in the months of March and April and given the fact that our relegation was still worst than most teams in our division, the solution was...

Transf-6.png

Loans...lots of loans. I went out knocking on the doors of the teams in the first league and Real Massama mas the one that came through. Nothing less than 5 guys joining the team on loan, that together with another player from Vitoria de Setubal, create what for me is a team able to compete for a safe place in the division this season. We ended up also hiring some guys from Belenenses and some free transfers and we were able to keep all important players from last season... The friendlies were good although I do admit that besides Kaiserslautern, the other teams were far from superpowers...

Chapter 24 - Now we are ready for CNS

Banner1.png

This time we did not start in such a bad fashion as in the first time we were in this division. Actually the first game was not perfect...we did draw but another 7 games were needed for us to taste defeat for the first time. I can say honestly that most of these wins were against teams that are far from being top contenders...well Torreense was actually the first candidate to promotion that we faced, but even against them and with a defeat we only lost by a goal and we were never the worst team in the game...the game could have fallen either way...

Fix-6-1.png

So after 7 games we are in the first place in the league...and I know that the position is hardly sustainable and when we start playing against other good teams, I am sure that the amount of wins will fall. But one this I know, we will not be battling for relegation this season! In the cups we were able to win the supercup of Lisbon and in the Portugal cup, for the first time, we passed one of the games...we did not pass the second game against a better team like Vizela...but this is also not our fight!

Chapter 25 - Tranquility

Banner1.png

We knew from the start that we would not be able to mantain the level of the start of the season. Mainly when we started to play against the the thougher opponents in this league, as it is the case of Casa Pia, Loures, Sacavenense or Oriental, we started to drop points. Of course we had our objectives clearly defined as a mid table finish and that helped when teh team started losing some games, to no get disappointed. We were still making a lot of goals...

Fix-6-2.png

...but defensively we were far from being a good team and that is what pisses me of at the moment. All and all we are already far from the promotion places, but more important than that, we are even further from the relegation zone. Now we just need to keep the pace for the remainder of the season and start preparing the next one, where a better place in the table is expected. For now, 5th place in the table is more than I had hopped for in the beginning of the season, so I am happy with my boys!

Chapter 26 - Hard to ask for more...

Banner1.png

We finalized the season in good fashion, mostly taken the fact that in the last 8 games in the league, we only lost 2 points. In the end of this CNS return better than that was the fact that we finally were able to be a good defensive team and that in the attack Keita went already on another good spell...

Fix-6-3.png

The 5th place is awsome when at the beginning of the season we were shooting for a place in the mid table (9th to 11th). I need to congratulate the players that ended up only 10 points away from a playoff spot. We this result for next year, I have to see if with another 2 or 3 good players, we can challenge for the playoff...

Chapter 27 - Epoca VII (24/25) - Keeping the position!

Banner1.png

Despite the concern that we might be going to fast, after last season, we could only hope that in this next season, we would at least try to get to playoff places. So we went to the market and we tried to get players with experience in the divisions above. The main transfers come from two teams in the division above, specially Real Massama, but we also secured free transfers and other good players, that might be enough (I hope) to get to a playoff place.

Transfers-7.png

In terms of friendlies, we could hardly be any better with the team scoring a lot of goals and no losing a single game, but despite the great results, including the wins against Leixoes, the last two games before the real fixtures start, were a bit of a let-down...two draws against teams that we should be winning is a worry...and makes me doubt if we can fight for the playoffs...but maybe we can...

Not surprised in the slightest that you got quickly promoted back, and only slightly surprised at how good the last season was, not too far from back-to-back promotions! Won't be long until you're in the Segunda Liga ;)

Chapter 28 - What is going on?

Banner1.png

After a good performance in the friedlies and also of course mostly due to the good season we had last year, both me, the players and the supporters of Olivais, were waiting for the team to fight at least for a playoff place this season...But things did not start as planed...we lost the first game to Alverca by 2-3 and in the first game in our Branca Lucas stadium another defeat against Vilafranquense. The thing got even worse after we got eliminated right in the first cup game against a team that was inferior to us...

Fix-7-1.png

We were slightly better after that and we did get positive outcomes against Sintrense and Sertanense, but soon we ended up losing again versus a team that was clearly at our reach. We ended up this first part of the season with a win against the fragile Alcobaca and a loss away to the biggest title contender Leiria away... The balance is not very good and now we really need to pull our **** together if we are to reach a proper mid-table finish...which is already lower than planned...

Chapter 29 - Much better!

Banner1.png

After a horrible start of the league, the team finally had a nice strech of games once teams of an easier level came into the schedule. The months of November to January were particularly good and saw the team, lead by Klismahn, managing to secure good results even against teams theoretically stronger than ours. On a note of interest, is the game against Vilafranquense, that saw a first half with 3 goals scored in min 45 and 5 goals in total, but a completly dull 0-0 result in the second half!

Fix-7-2.png

Vilafrance-louca-45-7-2.png

Despite the much better results and knowing that mathematically anything is possible still, the hard reality is that with 11 games to go till the end of the season, we have a lot of fixtures against tougher opponents and crossing those 6 points difference we have to the second place, would mean that all the other teams in the upper part of the table had to lose a lot of points...I think this season we will just keep it mid table and wait for more next season!

Chapter 30 - All well in the end

Banner1.png

The end of the league was a mixture between what we did well in the second part of the season and what we did wrong in the first third... The thing didnt start that pretty but we ended up with 3 wins and a draw. Now I am just waiting that the next season will be more like how we finished it this one...

Fix-7-3.png

Devestment-7-3.png

Bad news come from the youth squad. The club is now owing close to 600k Euros, so there was a disinvestment in the youth squad in the last couple of years...the result is that an overperformer in the past, the youth team just got relegated. The senior team, ended the season with an 8th place in the table which was far from my personal objective in the beginning of the season, but still only 11 points away from playoffs...lets build on this and do better next season!

Chapter 31 - Season 25/26  - To do more than last year

Banner1.png

To be honest at the beginning of the season I looked at the team and saw no reason for anyone to leave. Some of the kids from the youth squad went home packing but those were not first team players anyhow. We ended up also only buying the necessary players to streghten the squad in the defensive and attacking positions, leaving midfield a bit more vulnerable in terms of quality. Anyway, with this 6 new joiners I thing the team has enough quality and depth to at least fight until the last weekday for a spot in the top 2.

Transf-8.png

Velho-Benfica-6-3.png

Before talking about the friendlies, I just want to point out with a certain joy that Benfica went back to his glorious european past...and as always they lose the finals... I think Benfica´s manager cannot see anymore british teams. In terms of friendlies, on average we were pretty good. We did lose against tougher opponests as the cases of Porto and Extremadura and the two loses against teams of our quality were games where I was testing a new tactical model...and that did not go so well. All of this just leaves me with more confidence to get the playoff spot this year!

Chapter 32 - Thats the way!

Banner1.png

After a long season of friendlies, it would be hard to have a better start than the one we did. The team won the first 6 games of the league and only lost the 7th one because we were cheated by the ref against title contender Fatima. But almost as important as the amount of wins is the quality and the goals scored. Most of the time we did make at least 3 past the goal and only on one occasion did we fail to score. Also in the cup, it was by far the best season with the team reaching the third round only to lose againt a team higher in the league than us!

Fix-8-1.png

Embargo-8-1.png

Perfection does not last forever and from one moment to the other and while I was still searching for one or two players...boom embargo! At least I hope that the takover will result in some investment that the team really needs. Moving on and looking at the table, I know that we just started but I am sure that the team is already aware by now that we will challenge for the title and fight for one of those top 2 places...who knows...maybe we win this!

Chapter 33 - In the right path!

Banner1.png

We knew we would not be able to keep up the pace and win every single game like we did in the beginning of the season, specially in a league where quality is very even between sides...and that loss by the end of October against Fatima, did take its toll. The next two games ended up again with losess against Casa Pia and Alverca, and despite a small recovery against Oriental and Benfica B, we finished the month of November with a new loss, this time against Vilafranquense, a team who is also battling to go up!. We ended up compensating a bit the bad month of November, with December and January...

Fix-8-2.png

...where we did not lose a single game, but did lose some points with draws against teams we should have done better against, like Cartaxo or Eletrico. I know there are still some games to ho till the end of the season, but even after a takeover that did not bring any financial advantage to the club, things look goo enough for a playoff challange right until last weekday. Lets see what the last strech brings. I am ready for the fight!

Chapter 34 - Promotion without title

Banner1.png

After the good months, came a bad start of March...after those two loses against Alverca and Oriental, I almost believed that our race was over...but not quite, something happened to the players and we won the next 5 matches straight, putting us again in the title place. In the end we almost lost it with a draw and a loss against teams we should have done better against, but all in all that win against Vilafranquense, sealed the deal! 71 points, 1st place in the series and a playoff spot.

Fix-8-3.png

So in the playoffs in order to secure promotion we need to pass through two adversaries. The first one was Pinhalnovense who ended up being very soft. We did win both games by the tightest of margins, but we were completly superior in every single aspect. Next came Cesarense and that was a tough one. In fact so tough that after a 0-3 defeat at home I was already preparing next season in this league, but a miracle came and we won away by 4-1, making the promotion a reality. The last game was to decide who won the league, but we were too drunk to play it...**** it we got what we came for: promotion, 4 players in the best eleven and manager of the season! Cant wait for next season!

Chapter 35 - Season IX  - Professionals

Banner1.png

Well...now we were in the second league and with the fresh money, the first thing that management decided to do was spending 220k euros on new grass. So that meant that we did not have so much to buy the much needed new players. We did not sell anyone (although we let go a few) and with the short budget, the best we could get was some better players from the lower divisions and a few youngsters loaned out by clubs in the first league. Playing LLM is very difficult to do much more than this, the budget for transfers, salary and even scouting is very very slim for the division we will compete at.

Relva-8-3.png

Transf-9.png

Mostly due to the conditions mentioned above, I was not expecting the team to perform so well. In terms of friendlies we did do what we should (winning against the weaker opponents) and more (drawing against better opponents). In the first participation of the team in the league cup, we did almost reach the group stage. After a good win against Setubal, we did lose to Belenenses, although we were the best of the two sides. Maybe this team has enough to stay up...

Chapter 36 - Ups and Downs

Banner1.png

It was too good to last...quickly the team fell below the pre-season quality and the start of the league was absolutely disastrous. We started with 3 losses and despite having scored in all games in the league this far, the last 20 minutes of most matches have been very hard to take with the team taking 2 or 3 goals in the last 10 minutes in more than one occasion. We managed to grab our first win against the team that was first in the league at that moment. Then we went and won againsta AVes, but when everything was going well again...damm another loss.

Fix-9-1.png

All an all the spot at the moment is at our expectations and we need to keep it that way. Also some info on the cup: first time in the clubs history we manage to go thorugh in two games but the line will be over in the next game as we were tied with Benfica...I just hope we dont get completly trashed!
