Another signing for us as we bring in 21 year old Serbian Miladin Nikolajev from Red Star Belgrade for £500k. Again he is first team ready and has plenty of potential. Despite letting Sunjic go I think we come out of the back end more solid at the back and now with a good future in the position, especially added to Lambert whom we already signed this season.

We went for warm weather training to Cyprus and played a few friendlies against some of the local sides. The goal of the winter break friendlies for me is to bring the squad to high match fitness so that we can kick on in the league. The performances and the results were good as we approach the resumption of the league season.

it was always going to be a difficult game against Real Sociedad but we held out own and Sociedad only won the game late on. With a 2-1 result and the return leg back in Moscow, it is not inconcievable that we can't turn this tie around. Certainly if you are Real Sociedad you have to be a little worried for the 2nd leg. A 1-0 win would be enough for us, and I hope we can get the job done.

Yeah pretty tough to get Spanish opposition at this stage. I am not counting us out completely, the home leg will be extremely important to us if we are going to get through.

We remain top and are slowly getting into pole position, CSKA Moscow are 2 points behind having played two more games. Spartak Moscow have played the same number of games but are 5 points behind. There is still a long way to go, and we cannot afford to lose momentum at this stage.

I am very disappointed in Denis Nikitin as he forces his way to Krasnodar as he feels "they are a bigger club". Well let's how you feel about that in a few years my friend. It caused us a problem as we needed to get in replacement of Russian nationality.

We are forced to react with hours left of the transfer window. We end up signing youngster Arsen Khamkhoev from Zenit St Petersburg for £2.5m. He is not at the level of Denis Nikitin but had the potential to be a better player according to my scouts. We shall see, but at least we get someone in to the club to resolve this issue we had.

Dynamo Moscow (March 2023)

Well it's been a tough month, 5 away games in a row again as the fixture list turns into a mess, and we suffer because of it, out of 4 games we take only 4 points in the league and it has impacted us. We did get to Kubok Rossii final.

NOTE: I was looking around and wondering why I was not playing the 2nd leg of the Europa League against Real Sociedad and realised that clearly this db I am using messed up the tournament, not a completely game breaking way but still in quite an annoying way. The knockout phase of the competition is now a 1 leg affair, so when we lost to Real Sociedad we actually exited the competition. Quite annoying but I will continue this game since I am already so far into it. It would appear that this year every database I try seems to have a big issue with it. Oh well! The Europa League is now a one game affair when you get to the knockout rounds.

Okay a little bit more complex other seasons there have been two legs in the Europa League so I have no idea what is going on and why our second game with Sociedad never happened.

EDIT: This may be related to the Winter World Cup in Qatar, that happened in December, I have no idea what is going on.

3c9b5304416dc8e19089dcb1b6678139.png

We now sit 3rd in the league 4 points behind Spartak Moscow with a game in hand. I think we are now outsiders to do this, but you never know what might still happen this season.

Dynamo Moscow (April 2023)

Well it has been a very tough month and to be honest it is looking very much like we have bottled the league here. Beating Spartak Moscow, was required to even give us a chance and we did then beat Rotor while Spartak lost at Zenit St Petersburg. However I just don't think it is going to be enough.

73b9c827c683efe2a2ab5810a134943a.png

The league is looking increasingly complicated. Spartak are leading but have now played two more games than CSKA Moscow and can be overtaken if CSKA win those two games in hand. We are 3 points behind Spartak and have a game in hand and better goal difference, but the league is decided on results between teams, we lost at Spartak 2-1 and won at home 3-2, meaning that I believe Spartak should have the advantage if it comes down to that on away goals. Now CSKA would also go past us if they win their game in hand, however we still have them to play in the league at home. So really it looks like it can still go either way. We probably need Spartak to drop some points from their last two games, however they finish with two home games against Ufa (who could perhaps do something) and Ural (who are unlikely to do anything). So to say it complicated at this stage is an understatement.

CSKA play their game in hand over us and do not manage to get the three points they wanted as they draw away to Rostov 1-1. They have gone above us, as they beat us at home earlier in the season 2-1. We still have to play them at home this season.

e3d92e291e72815998a208469aa763b5.png

We play Khimki in our 28th fixture of the season and we get the job done thanks to Scottish winger Charlie Hay as we run our 2-0 winners.

7c9c1f5bc248531cba577a3532675c54.png

CSKA choke again and effectively while mathematically they can still win the league it would be a big ask, elsewhere what I felt was our last chance in Ufa, provided no benefit to us as Spartak Moscow run out 3-0 winners and surely will now go on to the title.

0ab68ac431a46dd27bd1efdcce64ebe0.png

All three Moscow sides have now assured themselves of Champions League football next season, which for us to be fair is some achievement. As can be seen we have game in hand over Spartak Moscow which will be CSKA at home before we finish our season at Lokomotiv Moscow. I guess it comes down to us needed to beat both CSKA and Lokomotiv and hope that Spartak Moscow somehow do not beat Ural on the final day.

95898d0fd54cd4f8eb4c4f7fb7f85d28.png

We end any hope that CSKA had of an Russian league title with a 3-0 win at home in what was a very one sided affair as we controlled the game from start to finish. Unfortunately for us, our title hopes also hang by a thread and we need Ural Yekaterinaburg to do us a favour and get the points at Lokomotiv to seal the most unlikely of title victories.

ac372a72407f33d9ff6de5fd3d0d28ef.png

The equation has simplified, we need Ural Yekaterinaburg to get a result against Spartak and then to better than result at Lokomotiv Moscow. We have with the win against CSKA assured ourselves of at least a 2nd place finish this season.

Well we may not get to lift the league this season, but we have won the Kubok Rossii, in the end 1 goal was all that was required as January signing Haris Kadric became a cult hero scoring the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win against Yenisey. It is the first time since 1995 that Dynamo Moscow have won the Kubok Rossii so I am very glad to stop the draught.

Cup hero Kadric scored early and in the end the only goal as we beat Lokomotiv on the final day of the season to give us a chance of beating Spartak Moscow to the title.

786ca9476b41cb347301584c45d662e9.png

Unfortunately by half time it was obvious that that was not going to happen and that Spartak Moscow were absolutely battering Ural on the final day, running out 5-0 winners in the end and Champions of Russia.

6008fc9a81580f255bfbade7ae1e8f08.png

The final league table is rather amazing in the end Spartak and ourselves finish on the same points, with an identical record, and with identical goal difference, and having scored 3 goals each in games played between sides this season, however in the end they take the title on away goals of games between the sides this season, it's probably difficult to imagine a tighter title race. We were very unlucky but we have ourselves to blame for the mini slump we suffered towards the end of the season that allowed Spartak Moscow back into things. We will be back next season, and the fact that we picked up the Russian Cup is some consolation to us.

Slovenia, Russia and Czech Republic suffered attrition this season, which Slovenia receiving 16%, Russia, 15% and the Czech's 40%. This means that all three countries are now in danger of getting to the 100% threshold where they are replaced. Russia will not be replaced until we leave the country, either by moving to a club outside of the country or the moment we drop into unemployment. Scotland and Serbia avoided attrition and are relatively low attrition wise.

Yeah it was a good season considering where we were predicted to finish, but in the end I was left with the sour taste of bottles in my mouth towards the end of the season, when we didn't get over the line in the league, sure it was close, but we led most of the season and we gave the other teams a chance.

Celtic have come and offered us an interview, while they are a huge club, the fact that we still have not been able to win the league in Russia has annoyed me and I want to at least attempt to rectify that so we will be passing for now on that offer.

I am looking to lead a clear out at the club and bring in assets that will be fixtures in the side for some time to come. And our first move in the transfer window, happens before it even opens as we move for Roman Tugarinov of relegated Akhmat Grozny. He had a relegation release clause which we match and we get a very decent centre-back of Russian nationality in for £875k, about half to a third what we would normally have to pay. He will join up with the team in a few days side.

A second addition in Serbian forward David Nemeth from Spartak Zlatibor Vloda for £525k, again activating another minimum fee release clause for a very good striker. I think we will add the necessary competition we need up front especially with Cernych likely to go this summer.

Fedor Cernych has been a fantastic servant to the club, and it did not feel right to dump him out of the club without somewhere to go so we work out a deal that will take him to the Netherlands to play with Heerenveen. We do not get any money for him, he is already 32, so that would always be limited anyway, but we do get his wages off the wage bill.

Unfortunately, our goalkeeper wanted to leave for CSKA Moscow and there was no point fighting it, we have some young talent available in goal that we can bring up, so despite him having a great season last season, in the end he was not completely indispensable to the club, and we can take the £1.5m and hopefully put it to good use.

We bring in Maxim Sazonov from Krylja Sovetov for £850k, potentially rising to £1.4m if a lot of conditions are met. I think he will be a good player to have that can slot in. In Russia there are limits to how many foreign players can play a game so it is important to have some Russian guys around who are up the level.

Our only game in the league came against Arsenal Tula and it was a pretty cagey, especially because Kadric got himself stupidly sent off and so it was looking like with the game at 0-0, we might drop points but we scored with 2 minutes to go to give ourselves a winning start to the campaign if not particularly convincing.
