Just Another American Meddling In Foreign Affairs [FM19]

This years game is probably the best one to date, however, I have gotten bored of each save which is something that never happened before. So I decided to start my very first Career thread in the hope I become more engaged and become more enthusiastic about the game I love. The goal of this career will be to find a home and potentially build a dynasty revolving around academy players and homegrown talents. I will be choosing my starting club but after that it will be a journeyman type save. I don't usually make rules for my saves but for this one, I will have a few:

1. If another club (doesn't matter who) offers me more money I have to take it. I have to look out for my families future!

2. No in game editors allowed.

3. Holiday to the year 2029 so my manager's age was realistic for a retired player.

4. Have ambition and look to move to top clubs if given the chance and make the academy a priority.

That's pretty much all the 'rules' now here is an introduction to me, the manager! (Side note: my history is mostly fiction)

Meet the Manager:

Hello, my name is Patrick and I've been involved in soccer since the age of 14, but my love for the sport began way before that when my cousins in Ireland turned me on to FIFA 2001. I grew up playing for my school and local club teams around Long Island, NY. After a successful senior year with my school team, in which I broke the district scoring record as a winger, I was approached by Division 2 colleges from around the country. After deciding I wanted to stay close to home and commute rather than dorm and waste thousands, I choose LIU Post. A mere 25 minute drive from my house. I had goals of playing for my country but never got a call up from the United States, however based on my strong showing and impressive goal scoring record in college, I did get a call up to join the Irish U21 squad (through grandparents) once but never featured. Following my college career I entered the MLS draft and was selected by the New York Red Bulls in the later rounds and was immediately loaned to their second team. I put in strong performances and always worked hard but when the next season began I was again loaned to the second team. Following that season I was released by Red Bulls and in the years following I played for 7 other clubs, bouncing around from Florida to Arizona and everywhere in between.

By the time I reached 30 I started studying for my badges with the goal of completing them before I hung my playing boots up for good. In my later playing years I grew a greater appreciation for the tactical side of the game and found that my true calling in this sport was not as a player but as a coach. I grew an affinity towards total football and gegen pressing. The way Rinus Michels ran Ajax as well as the Dutch NT is something I admire and aspire to achieve. More recently my managerial role model would be Marcelo Bielsa and Sir Alex Ferguson.  When I turned 35 my alma mater offered the head coach role which I accepted. I managed there for 3 years and in those three years we won the Division 2 national title twice, something the school had never done before. One of my staff members was a former player Welsh international who played for The New Saints. He still remained in contact with the club and was responsible for bringing over a few Welsh players in the three years we coached together. When he heard TNS's boss had resigned he mentioned my name to one of the board members.

Thenewsaints.png.12916d64818e7d1042068e265f463aa9.png

A few phone calls later and a face to face interview with the owner and I had now found myself being offered the chance to become manager of The New Saints. They liked my motivation and the fact that they were getting a hungry young manager with ambition. My knowledge of the club and the history of the sport in Wales all together was limited. And to be honest, I was a little surprised by how unpopular the top flight league in Wales actually was. But none of that detoured me. At the end of the day it was a professional club who was willing to take a chance on me. I would have been foolish to say no even if it meant leaving my very comfortable job back home on Long Island. I didn't get into management to coach college my whole life. My dreams and ambitions are to coach professional athletes and work with the best players in the world. I want to be regarded as the greatest manager in the world and succeed where I failed as a player. In order to do that, you have to leave USA. My pay is virtually the same as it was at LIU but there's more opportunity to succeed here and the cost of living is nowhere near as high as New York. I chose my place of residence to be near the stadium, so, Oswestry.

The only downside of moving to Europe is they make you redo some courses to get your Continental Pro License. That's no bother for me though, I plan to have my pro license within 2 years.

So that's it for now. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this. I'm already enjoying this save more than the past few just from writing about it lol. Heres to a long, successful career!

*Interesting to note that Wolves have not been taken over by any tycoon or rich business man. They won the league the good old fashioned way, proper management.

Pure dominance by the English clubs, most notably, Chelsea.

Preseason has gone pretty well.  Unfortunately we were eliminated immediately from Champions League qualifying somewhat shockingly. I'm not one to make excuses but most of my players were not fit and we weren't 100% on my tactical approach just yet. But I'm using that as a learning experience for next season, our preparation has to improve greatly if we win the league.

We had money to spend surprisingly and we spent it. I want to win the league with ease and once I decide we are prepared to dominate the league we will focus more on European football.

The rest of our transfers:

For the Welsh league, we signed some pretty good players. We were favorites to win the league before I signed anyone and these signings solidified that belief amongst the media. Aziz in particular has me excited for what he could do this season :D

The hardest part of the season, so far, has been trying to pronounce the club names.

Just hit December 1st on our first season in Wales and it has gone pretty well so far. I've been able to adapt to a new country better than I thought. We also made it to the Welsh League Cup final which takes place on January 27th and we will be playing Abersytwyth Town. Call me foolish, but I'm focusing more on scouting and who we can bring in for next season to try and get into the group stages of the Europa League at least!

The season has gone without a hitch bar a few unhappy/cry baby players. But that's common now a days.

This is a first... Rhys is a team leader and complained about being subbed out when he was playing poorly. I yelled at him and told him to be a professional and stop dwelling on things... he didn't like that at all and I may have a revolt on my hands. I gotta say, I'm not the slightest bit impressed with the amount of players who are complaining on this team. Is it cause I'm foreign???

Week or two later, he finished third in Welsh Player of the Year. He has never capped for his country at any level. Strange.

Can't speak for the youth sides, but none of the current Welsh national side in real life play in the Welsh league system due to the level being fairly poor, so that's not without precedent.

The Welsh league reputation has improved in my save thankfully (League Two is ranked 72nd for comparison). However I think this may be a bug. Because this is the first year that players playing in the Welsh Premier League made the top three.

Just like in real life, not a single player in the senior side plays their club football in Wales. And my player, Rhys Williams' reputation is marginal compared to the others.

Following hoping for more Chelsea domination of the Champions league,

also the transfers amused me, PSG made a profit on Dembele, but Barca not so much when it came to Gedson!

Also, if your a foreigner in Wales, I'm surprised your players aren't complaining about you in Welsh!

Ohhhh so that's what they've been saying... Gotta brush up on my Welsh.

Chelsea have had a legendary new gen come through their academy and a lot of their success is due to him.

February: Takeover, New Contract, and Pro Coaching Badges

Our chairman made it clear he wanted out and was looking to sell the club. About two weeks later, the fastest board takeover I've ever witnessed, was finalized.

1243616322_ScreenShot2019-06-11at7_29_32PM.thumb.png.9304028d7036f12a87c8cfe81bf2ea3d.png

And added a nice amount of cash to strengthen our already dominate squad.

The next day I got a message from the new chairman stating he wanted to extend my contract which was due to expire at the end of the season. I of course agreed and will be looking to get as big a raise as I can. It's hard living in Wales alone but getting a nice raise will definitely make it better. A few hours after receiving that email, I was feeling lucky, so after training I walked into the boardroom introduced myself in person for the first time and demanded they pay for me to attain my Continental Pro License.

I've been mucking about the Manchester suburbs in Vanarama League with Stalybridge Celtic and then moved on to Inverness, Scotland for Scottish Premier League Football with Inverness Caledonian Thistle (Most successful manager ever in 2033) in current save...

That's great, how is it managing in Scotland this year? I would like to get there at some point in this career but we will see. You won the Champions League?

I have not won the Champions League...I qualify for it then reach Group Stage and get slaughtered by the Big Clubs (Barcelona, Chelsea, and Ajax this year).

I AM most successful Manager in ICT History...

Even with the Champion's League money ($17.28M this year) I don't have a large wage bill. ($7M/Year) Trying to put club on solid foundations first (upgrading Facilities and Stadium and improving youth coaching) then eventually overtaking Rangers, Celtic, and Hibernian for League title before I get bored and leave for MLS!

I love playing MLS because the league is relatively balanced No really dominant sides and I can be creative Tactically and create a dominant side. I have been using a Counterattacking 4-5-1 in current save, but will change systems when I go MLS.

Ahh gotcha, I misunderstood I thought you meant most decorated manager in the history of the sport. I would love to manage Celtic at some point and try to make a dent in Europe but thats never easy.

Even though I'm from NY, I've never actually managed in the MLS in all the years I've been playing this game. I never liked the MLS too much for a number of different reasons like their rules are strange and they start the season in winter. But the more I think about it the more I'd like to try it out. You talked me into it

Youth Intake

If you know me you know I love to give youth a chance. This intake isn't looking very promising though. Some of these players have potential to be a backup player which isn't awful but given how much I plan on strengthening the squad they could find themselves never getting close to the first team.

I also find it odd that a Welsh club doesn't produce one Welsh new gen...? After investigating this further I found that we are the only club who produced all English new gens.

End of Season 2029/30

Screen-Shot-2016-04-09-at-20_25.07-640x360.thumb.png.7905aec6793eed5af14174d32f4efa30.png

We managed to secure the title with about 6 matches left to be played. It was just about as easy as I figured it would be. A whopping 535 supporters showed up to watch our last home game of the season. Our average attendance for the season was 453 which was good enough for second place in the league and 15% of our stadiums capacity.

1802863979_ScreenShot2019-06-11at10_32_46PM.thumb.png.17f56d57085f6647238120cef8500c14.png

5 of my players were nominated for Player of the Year. So I decided that I will not be voting because I don't want to take any votes away from my guys. :) Also, I will be buying every other player off this list just because I can. Thank you.

1130083356_ScreenShot2019-06-12at12_30_44AM.thumb.png.e14385b4f3ac22e5a0845e0ce9ec90e6.png

Brown was on an amateur contract so I signed him without even looking and immediately weakening the second best club in Wales. He probably won't play many games..

799499989_ScreenShot2019-06-12at12_33_19AM.thumb.png.c78e18e592fd6bd78aadbbaf66f98141.png

And then strangely a left midfielder called McLaughlin won player of the year, but he wasn't our McLaughlin. Weird how he wins Player of the Year but isn't good enough to make the Team of the Year. I'm feeling rather petty and annoyed he beat my players so he will also be signed and benched for the remainder of his career.

Off season plans are to just strengthen every position and focus on European football.

I might have to manage in Wales, that's the coolest trophy I've ever seen!

Also the MLS always seemed strange to me, odd rules and a draft system that I know works in American Football but struggle to get my mind round it when I think about our football, but on the other side of that coin it will probably make for a pretty unique experience, might have to add it to the list

Congratulations on winning the domestic league, good luck with the European football

We got battered and bruised by Europes big boys but the attention it brought the club, as well as revenue, was great. I kept my expectations in check for the CL too which is important.

In other news I am being linked with a pretty high profile job. Even though I haven't officially been offered anything I like the fact that I am being recognized. Is it realistic? I dont know. I'm just an American lost in Europe trying to make a name for myself...

Interesting things are developing now. I will attend the interview because the Irish Premier League has a much higher ranking than the Welsh one and the Welsh league feels like a dead end. I already won the domestic treble in two seasons so there isn't anything else left to really accomplish...

---------------------------------------------------------

(edit 1) I didn't get the job. But then a few weeks later...

(Edit 2) I didn't get that job either... But the manager who did get the St. Johnstone job just left newly promoted Greenock Morton FC and they came calling.

Not Sure the Greenock Morton FC job is a step up.

A job in the Championship of England or Premiership in Scotland should be your target for a new job. Otherwise some how make TNS a force in European Football. (start by making the Group Stage of ECC and or EC)

Yeah I agree. The st. Johnstone job would have been nice because they are in the Scottish premier league but every job I interviewed for yesterday I was unsuccessful. My reputation within the game isn’t high enough to get those jobs just yet.

I did however get a interview with Rotherdam who’s in league one but are favorites to win the league so if they offer me that I will most probably accept.

We got battered and bruised by Europes big boys but the attention it brought the club, as well as revenue, was great. I kept my expectations in check for the CL too which is important.

I have a feeling I may be getting approached by other clubs now but who knows. A few months back there were rumors that Waterford were going to approach me but that never ended up happening.

Wondering why the CL group shows TNS as being an English side?!

amusing when you see names in other peoples saves you recognise. Fiete Arp was a wonderkid striker who I signed as Chelsea.

Nice to see my Valencia side getting through the group, just hope I can do it in my own save!!

I would stay in Wales and smash your way into the Europa League

They were the toughest to face honestly. They crushed me 1-4 and 6-1.

The only thing is we just got to the CL group stages again but if we don’t finish third we don’t get a chance in the Europa league so it’s tough. Gotta hope my group this season is a little easier than last.

can't you use the money you get each season to improve your club? i know it might take a few years, but unless a better job comes along it's worth the guaranteed money and trophies to up your reputation as a manager to get better job

Our group this time around is just as hard unfortunately and it shows us being from Wales!

I've been bringing better and better players each year so my current squad is significantly better than when I took over. But yeah you're right I'm not just going to resign from TNS for no reason. I'm going to take the contract offer into account as well because I want to try to bring some realism into it.

Sheffield Wednesday

Now it's time to embark on our next journey to England.  We are moving to a much bigger and well known club. I've already seen a lot of journalists doubting my credentials and question Wednesday's decision to hire me. Fuel for me to prove my doubters wrong. My new chairman has asked me to finish in the top half and I agreed that is very doable.

The bookies had us finishing 12th before the start of the season and we currently sit 15th. 2 points off of 12th.

The next order of business will be to go over my staff, try to bring my assman from TNS, look to bring a few players from TNS that I think could potentially play Championship football and come up with a tactic that we will be able to achieve our goals with. I'm going to bring the same philosophies from TNS to Wednesday. Although I understand TNS had a strangle hold on the league and we were by far the best in the land, unlike Wednesday. So I have to be smart.

Not the most encouraging thing to see on your first day at your new job...

Get the Team leaders to support you by winning and complimenting them on good play. Then disciplining the club will be a piece of cake...especially if Captain/team leader has a very high leadership skill level.

Often you can start by using ambassadorial duties to help with any problems right away.....if you ask nicely.

Also during training sprinkle team bonding sessions in after recovery on the day after matches. High Morale helps the team play better and makes for a self fulfilling prophecy...

5-2 win, good start, though turning around players might be more of a long haul!

This is all good advice, thanks for that! The new training has sorta scared me off, I haven't messed with that at all and just leave it to my assistant.

Our league form hasn't been good enough for me. We sit 14th right now. But our form in the FA Cup has been fantastic. Southampton are in the premier league and we were heavy underdogs in that match. The scoreline is slightly deceiving because we were winning 5-2 but switched off the final ten minutes and let them score two easy goals. We got Liverpool in the 6th round. Yikes

For the league we still have 11 fixtures left to play and anything can happen in those 11 games. I think we will be more than good enough to stay mid table but I'm aiming higher.

Since joining I've been introduced to these 2 youth players and I've already brought Cusworth into the first team to train and has actually been making sub appearances. Apart from looking extremely bored and exhausted, his future could be bright. And Adam Howell I just brought into the U18's from the academy and he looks incredible for his age! I noticed he isn't listed as a wonderkid though so I'm keeping expectations in check...

Financial Troubles

604620920_ScreenShot2019-06-17at11_56_00PM.thumb.png.7131bb752086ca1129c9667283e59ac9.png

It's become clear that money is an issue at the club (see wage budget/how much we're spending). I am unable to resign any of my staff members. A decent amount of them I don't even want to renew but the few I do want to keep at the club, I can't. Don't get me wrong, I have been enjoying myself in Sheffield the months I've been here. But financial burdens and me just don't really go together. I'm sure supporters will say "show your loyalty and be grateful we hired you! don't quit on us!" I hear that and I can relate, I'd want the same. But looking at it from my point of view... You have to be a little concerned. What happens when the day comes I stroll into the bank to deposit my check and the bank informs me the check has bounced? Then what? Would you expect any average working class man to 'show loyalty' to his employers? I'd certainly hope not. And the same goes for me.

Obviously this hasn't happened... but it could! And it scares me. If the finances at the club don't improve it may force my hand. After all, I am a family man, and who's going to support my wives shopaholic and self destructive tendencies? My sons fortnite and micro transaction obsession? ME! And I can't support all that at a club who doesn't pay their employees...

Just a thought.

Sometimes after a takeover, the new board want their own manager - so hopefully you won't get the boot!!

Mr. optimistic! haha Nah that is true, my future doesn't feel very secure at the club. If I get sacked then so be it.

End of 2031/32 Season

In the end we actually had a pretty decent season finishing only 6 points off playoffs! I have nothing against Villa but beating them the final day was particularly enjoyable. 15 wins out of 26 isn't so bad at all also we had 6 losses and 5 draws. We finished the season very strongly.

Our front three performed amazingly and had great chemistry. Our club captain and academy player, Don Burns, led the attack and won the golden boot with 23 goals. As you can see I handed Adam Howell his debut about 2 weeks after he signed his first contract and needless to say he has already claimed the starting spot. Future England number 1 for sure.

Board is backing me with some cash but not sure where this is money is coming from... We are in debt and don't really have money to spend at all.

We were also again linked with a consortium takeover but nothing as of yet has happened.

Thats all the info I have for now, I'll be back once we progress further into the summer.
