(Discussion) More In-Depth on Coaching Staff

Recommended Posts

The coaching and training segments of Football Manager have greatly improved. However, I personally feel that the game could improve further and more staff could be implemented into the game and/or a better breakdown of staff roles and abilities. I think that this could go hand-in-hand with improvements in facilities.

The issue is trying to not make the game like a Football Chairman and so on. Seeing a more direct influence from staff to the players and coaching system would be ideal. Also, I would like to see the ability to hire and fire doctors and maybe other medical staff being added to the game.

The other staff I would like to see added are specialists; like how Liverpool added a Throw-In Specialist. Also seeing staff ratings for your board members and directors who you will not have an influence over. I know that in the editors there are hidden attributes which can be changed, but seeing an overall rating or ratings for these members would be cool.

A better break down and better role specific ratings should be implemented to all Staff.

Last recommendation would be to have a scouting system for staff and as with players their ratings can be varied rather than set in stone. This can bring the board and upper members of a club into the game more without your influence or turning it into a chairman game. Also, I would like for your staff to have opinions on other staff and their beliefs on how good a coach they would be. (In particular, the Director of Football or board members can communicate more regularly with you.) This also applies the factor of their reputations, players will be affected by it and more reaction from the fans would be better too.

Okay I lied, the last thing would be more friction between you and your own staff potentially and other staff. Way more can be made of this. (Again think of Jurgen Klopp and the fall out with his Assistant Manager).

Let's take coaching as an example, you could have some things that are traits that are likely to be passed on (similarly to a PPM in mentoring) - so for example there could be PPM or specific attributes which see slightly larger or smaller increases as a result of a coach ability.

The interaction and relationship element of your coaching staff has room to develop. So for example if you want a person to change role and they don't initially appear willing to change you could discuss this (e.g. going from assistant to first team coach in order to not lose the member of staff, or from U-23's coach to an U-18's manager because you want to use them in a manager role instead). Relationships between coaches and players (positive and negative) could also be added (e.g. Fabianski leaving Arsenal as he didn't get on with or like the quality of goalkeeping coaching from Gerry Peyton).
