Squad Planning Feature

Recommended Posts

I think this is something every manager does in one way or another (a lot of people still use a pen and paper) and I think there is an opportunity to integrate this into the game. I know there is a Squad Depth screen which is helpful but there are limitations to this including it being fairly rigid, for example, you have to look at it based on one of your formations at a time but I plan for 2 formations so in one formation I have an AMC and the other I have a DM but not the other way round.

I think this feature should be a bit more free form (maybe the tactics pitch without a prescribed formation), being able to drag players in to various positions (even players that you plan to retrain) as well as being able to highlight the first choice and back up options as well as drafting in placeholders for "New LB Cover" for example, as well as transfer targets and youth players that may be able to step up (this could even go further e.g. identifying a young player to be involved in a pre-season tour and tracking his progress to the point where a decision is made about his immediate future). Players should also be able to be included in multiple positions if desired.

Hopefully once the squad has been planned out, another element for inclusion would be identifying players that you wish to loan out or sell.

Another element should be to somehow include squad rules for the competitions the team will be in, so squad limits and homegrown status as this feature should also highlight where you have too many players or not enough homegrown players etc.

Good idea, I definitely agree the game needs more Manager tools to evaluate our team of players. The squad depth screen has the potential to be used in better ways than it is now. I use a notebook next to my PC to makes notes about my players based on my own ideas but would prefer if FM had some options natively to aid this process.

I put of ideas along this line also a while ago so hoping SI give us better manager tools later

Agreed. For one, would like a more robust wage commitment page like the below (mocked in Excel)

And a bonus tracking page that helps me better understand how much is being paid out in performance bonuses.

Thanks!

Just read the thread you shared and some great ideas in there. I really like the idea of evaluating players based on how they fit into your philosophy & system and extending this to recruitment as this will help enhance the game to more realistic levels. You could play 352 with wing backs so a RW, however, good he is or might be, should be determined as a poor fit. The Jamie Vardy example is also a good one.

This kind of evaluation should then extend to players performing well for some clubs and not others and more examples in the game will occur where clubs will overlook the talent of a player whereas another club will turn them into a star.
