[FM19] Those loyalty cards are great, arent they? I got too many points on one of them, and now I'm not allowed to drive. Northernpilgrim in a one-club save (until it's not, and then I'll get the train)

Hello, and welcome to another Northernpilgrim career thread.

Premise

As the title suggests, I'm starting out with the intention of doing a one-club save, and seeing how far I can take them, but also leaving open the option to move on if I get sacked or take them as far as I can go. And for anyone who doesn't get the thread title, it's a Milton Jones joke. If I can find it at some point I'll post a YouTube clip

EDIT: It's at 6:26 in this clip

https://youtu.be/473KIeo_Xv0

Starting point

Argyle.thumb.PNG.5cee8c72a93536938a83f3cb6369953b.PNG

With the sacking of Derek Adams ahead of Argyle's last game of the 2018/19 season, I have decided to take on the Plymouth Argyle job, and see how far I can take them. As you will know, Argyle were relegated to League 2 on the final day of the season, so the aim initially is to survive, and see where we go from there. The last few years has been a rollercoaster, as Argyle went from being a Championship club until May 2010, through successive relegations, and in the first two years in League 2, survived on the final day. That was then followed by a midtable finish, a playoff semi final defeat to Wycombe, a playoff final defeat to AFC Wimbledon, and then automatic promotion to League 1, where we finished 7th in 2017/18, just missing out on the playoffs. That brings us to the start of this season, and the beginning of my tenure as Plymouth Argyle manager

The Manager

I'm playing as myself, but with a slight twist. Although I couldn't manage to replicate them exactly, I've given myself attributes as closely matched to the departed Derek Adams as possible. Here I am

2051239524_JamieSheehan.thumb.PNG.6b98a8d45f8a3d1043b6d33b660608b3.PNG

and for comparison, here are Derek Adams attributes

333328294_DerekAdams.thumb.PNG.99044d7a0802b203d8d747b8d9ecdcad.PNG

Things have started pretty well for me at Argyle. This is how we got on in preseason

1634315183_July2018.thumb.PNG.aab4d338a5351b20bc0c17d2f0b8bf3e.PNG

In terms of transfers, there was a massive turnover of players before my arrival, and I've added two loan signings

1957305327_TransfersJul2015.thumb.PNG.b820b51ca8da3689be5f50362b4bbfcd.PNG

Marcelo Djaló adds strength in depth at centre back

Djalo.thumb.PNG.82b0438855d7c48b4c4e7c84e82568bc.PNG

and Matt Butcher has come in as a second option for the defensive midfield slot.

1105621590_MattButcher.thumb.PNG.da3f5dff71b17acf75f7397a6ff71191.PNG

and that means that our squad for the new season looks like this

18.1.thumb.PNG.71017f1f664579bda8a15dca81a74519.PNG18.2.thumb.PNG.31ee563412c58974fc096950b73ec43f.PNG

Whilst the bookies are not tipping my side to go down, they're definitely not expecting a repeat of last season's 7th place. I'm hoping to go better than their prediction, with top half my minimum target

Indeed. Need to turn it around quickly or we'll have more than a passing interest in the relegation battle.

I want to say nice words or offer encouragement but am mindful that the last two times I've done that, the next time I've come to catch up you've been sacked so I'm going to keep my yapper shut and just leave quietly for once in the hope I don't jinx you (yet again)...!

November was a better month, on paper at least (apart from being giant-killed in the FA Cup)

920948514_Nov2018.thumb.PNG.9280694cad8a196c75cd62129ca1a3d0.PNG

but we blew leads against Sunderland and Fleetwood

which has left us in mid-table, four points from a playoff place

A slow start to December, but to end the month on a run of three straight wins was pleasing

and that has put us back in the top half

The upturn in form has encouraged the board to offer me a new contract, which I've accepted. I will not leave Argyle until I've at least got them to the Championship and kept them there

and we're only just behind the playoff pack, and more importantly, one win away from getting to 50 points and probable safety

Can't help but think that the high number of draws (a lot of them games we were winning after 85-90 mins) could be the thing that holds us back. I'd bite my own arm off for a 4th placed finish.

March wasn't good in terms of results, and we've lost several players to injuries, but we did fight back from 2 down to get a draw with Luton, but we twice led against Shrewsbury, only to be pegged back both times. Bristol Rovers it was a case of they took their chances, we didn't. We should have got a draw from that game, and we led against Blackpool until 82 minutes, and conceded the winner in stoppage time (yet again)

1091101655_Mar2019.thumb.PNG.091fee45fc36f0315e405e5fbd10446c.PNG

all of which sees us drop out of the playoffs, with 6 games to go

1250700725_TransfersJul2019.thumb.PNG.e17f99d8783087756f578e8d38d6d999.PNG

Matt Butcher's loan move became a permanent signing on a free when his Bournemouth contract expired

Ryan Blair came on a free after being released by Swansea

Blair.thumb.PNG.09806fa4d624c16198bd2457154e7d61.PNG

Luke McCullough was released by Barnsley, so I snapped him up

McCullough.thumb.PNG.594dd76d399d6d436e8781080bc8f957.PNG

Many people will be familiar with ex-Manchester United striker Will Keane

Keane.thumb.PNG.47430b3cbdb670ede2e4844bae805948.PNG

and the final signing was centre back Remie Streete, again on a freeStreete.thumb.PNG.d17d12d77bff134516ec3e1bf909115a.PNG

Which means that our squad for the new season looks like this

Great stuff! Unlucky in the playoffs but perhaps the new signings will be enough to push you that extra few steps even to automatic promotion (no pressure!) - squad looks nice and strong now CA wise in any case with more PA in the tank to come too! :)

I'm hoping that the extra season in league one will mean we're more competitive if and when we go up.

The rivalry with Portsmouth isn't one of long term historical significance, as we went a long time without playing them at all, it's only recently that it's started to get a bit bigger when we were both trying to win League 2
