[FM19] the lessons of a tactical novice

I know a lot of people enjoyed reading my Dnipro thread. In the end, though it became a chore for two reasons. The first was that I had loaded 300k players and in the long winter break and around the time of the transfer window closing, it could drag on with nothing happening for hours, or in the case of the winter break for 2 days or so whilst I watched Netflix with the game in the background. This is easily remedied by having fewer leagues running. The 2nd was a more profound difference. I was using plug and play. Now there's nothing wrong with that, indeed it's often fun to witness and I will do it again on FM for sure. All that success feels hollow though. It felt like the guy who uploaded the formation onto steam was the guy who earned the titles, not me.

I, therefore, decided to learn how to make my own tactics. Any success would be mine alone, and it would be less certain though more rewarding when it did happen. I had tried to make my own tactics before on several occasions, and only twice did I find success (usually it went wrong, very wrong). The first was as Bayern on the FM19 Beta but the 2nd time feels more special. It was on FM16, as Celtic, where I reached the EL semifinals two years in a row, and before the game crashed dumped was being courted by several European clubs ( The only one I can remember is Sporting Lisbon). The highlight of the save was a 3-1 win against Real Madrid, Ronaldo and all. You can see the youtube footage below (on a side note, is it just me or was it easier to upload game footage to youtube on FM16 than currently?)

In honour of that save, I'm starting a new save starting with Celtic (though I could end up anywhere). If you want to learn how the game works, then in the post-sevco era, Celtic is the best place to start. I named my manager after two recently departed Celtic greats.

We also knocked back a 6M offer from West Ham for Boyata.

This is my tactic so far, and I'd like to thank @craigcwwe and @Weezer for their advice after my initial failed effort with an earlier save (starting as the worse club in the MLS is probably not the best place to start in retrospect). I'd like to maybe experiment with some variation in passing length and the defending side of things, but so far, everythings going OK.

The reserve team game was played using vertical tiki-taka in the same formation and almost the same roles, but I wasn't satisfied with the team's performance and changed the default to gegenpress along with the striker role to pressing striker.

A trip to Georgia awaits us and I'd expect that Czech friendly to be cancelled if we progress.

I've made a hash of the transfer window as you'll see when its all done and dusted. It's not easy when your squad led by Scott Brown demands a replacement and team harmony depends on it.

Seems you're doing pretty well @decapitated

tactically sure, I probably could have paid less for McKenna and still landed him (not that doing so has pleased Scott Brown yet so hopefully Elneny on loan should do that). the group stages of European competition are the real test for Celtic though.

I wouldn't call 2-0 at home a 'hammering' myself but there we go.

Is the hammering based on the shot count and possession more than the score?  It has come up in some other results you had, where the shot total was unbalanced.

then in the draw you had, the shots we’re also skewed but it probably triggers another response due to the fact it wasn't a win.  I think I have had a 1-0 hammering before

That would make sense.

Burke got sent off, and then Weah got injured ruining the game for us

What happened was I checked browns profile and noticed that he was 100% against me to the point of trying to force me out of the club so I stripped him of the captaincy. This led to Lustig and Sinclair to publicly condemn me in the media for my treatment of him. I'm not sure whether to go on, as although I don't want to end so quickly and get a bad reputation on here for starting too many threads and not going the full way, but theres no way in real life I could continue as Celtic manager after 3 of my senior players condemn me in the media and the rest of the squad dislikes me. Tactically I'm doing ok, but I'm starting to think transfers and especially man management are bigger weaknesses in my game.
