Cabinteely F.C. Who?

"If the club are surviving in the league in five years time, it will be one of the most remarkable stories that has happened in Irish football."

For those outside Ireland, Cabinteely will not be a familiar name. Indeed, when the Irish FA announced they would be joining the League of Ireland in January 2015 the reaction from the Irish was one of disbelief, summed up very well by the above article. Fast forward four years and Cabinteely have remained in the league, gradually improving in position in the league each season; bottom, 2nd bottom, 3rd bottom and 4th bottom!

It was stated that it would be a miracle that they would still be in the League of Ireland in 5 years, but now we enter into that 5th year still intact! It's time to revamp Cabinteely from strugglers to a force in the LOI and Europe, with a youth only policy, of course!

Not too much to shout about facilities wise, but a half decent youth setup provides a good foundation.

A very young squad and as you can see a very small budget! Here's a look at the key players:

By far our best player, as our keeper he will probably need to be!

O'Neill is the team's passer and best prospect.

Technically solid and quick, Watson is one of two 'foreigners' in the squad having been born in Manchester.

Hurley hurls down the left hand side of the pitch!

We are Cabinteely Football Club…and this is our story…

Firstly, thank you for taking time to read this. We want you to join with us, on an exciting new venture.

There is a lot to our story, but many chapters are yet to be written. These new chapters are going to be about you, the people of our area. This is your club.

This is a club that we want everyone in the ‘Borough’ to be proud of.

South Dublin is made up of dozens of football clubs and we endeavor to represent this great footballing area.

We are delighted to have joined the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland 1st Division.

The Football Association of Ireland has awarded Cabinteely Football Club a license to join the highest echelons of Irish football. We will be the first team from the Borough of Dun Laoghaire to play at this level.  This is a part of history for our area.

Cabinteely Football Club is now the largest football club in the country by player numbers. We proudly proclaim the club as a community club. We have and will always advocate ‘football for all’. One of our core strengths is the phenomenal community support that underpins our club.

This announcement means that our players now have a pathway right through to senior football. This progression comes from years of enthusiasm and tireless effort from the community and the support it has received in that time.

This venture is to be self-funding through its own sponsorship and various revenue streams. This ensures that the finances of the schoolboy and schoolgirl club are not compromised. The new company has established a board of directors who will be responsible for driving the success of the new team.

We are ready to meet the challenge, we want and will be successful at this level. We want you to be part of and share in our success. We want to bring new, fresh and exciting ideas into football.

Supporters are the heartbeat of any club. We want and need you to encourage support for us.

We ask you to join us, to rally together, in bringing League of Ireland football to the ‘Borough’. This is a great opportunity for family and friends alike to get down to our games and cheer the guys on.

It is interesting to see where this story started. Eighty years ago the team was not even known as Cabinteely, but rather they were commonly called ‘the Blues from Cabinteely’.

In 1939, we won the Schoolboys League Cup. And what about this – the gate receipts for that cup final were £180? If you know that general admission prices were about about €0.03 in today’s money, that indicates a crowd of about 6,000.

The most famous Cabinteely side included Peter Farrell (Peter scored the second goal when Ireland became the first country to beat England at home in 1949 and later went on to captain Ireland – perhaps we have another future Irish captain in the club today?).

The Blues changed their name to Cabinteely Boys around 1950 and the current club was formed in 1967, as Auburn F.C., and began league football with only one team. In 1973 the club was renamed Cabinteely Boys F.C.

The name was more recently changed to Cabinteely F.C., to reflect both the numbers of individual girl members and its excellent ladies teams.

Fast-forward to today and there are now 55 teams. This is a mixture of school-boy teams, school-girl teams, a special needs team, a ladies team and now our first ever League of Ireland team.

Now it’s time to start writing the latest chapters. It’s time to come together. Let’s do this. We are one. We are Cabo.

Cabo - 2019 Season Review

b7930b21fc33ab1fdd31be8bab424df9.png

Bottom, 2nd Bottom, 3rd Bottom, 4th Bottom and now 5th Bottom. Gradual progress, and for now that's how I see this one going. We almost looked like snatching a playoff spot but a couple of bad results and we dropped all the way down to 2nd bottom going into the final game.

League Table

6fc535fcb24f6349981d703a2948d524.png

As you can see berween 3rd and 9th it was very tight! A loss in our final game would have meant a 2nd bottom finish. Shelbourne ran away with the league, while Wexford were the whipping boys.

Results

b2a8b02032b6875f2d2de583e7657786.png

We started relatively well, but hit really bad form in April / May

a9a8ef1dea24c4aaf6459af7daa2e998.png

A mixed back throughout the rest of the season. Top goalscorer Clucas got injured vs Athlone and I can't help but wonder if we would have finished in the playoffs if we could have kept him fit for the run in.

Player Stats

a8fc4c142ed113de1b88250add67289a.png

We had a rather settled squad throughout the season, with players only really rotating in when our usual 11 were injured or suspended.

Lots of 'potential' but hard to work out if thats good LOI 2nd tier standard or actually players who could progress higher than that. Not a bad first intake.

00f791690a248132f447c8f2da6ea6c7.png

Hayes looks alright, poor personality and pace of 7 worries me, but the rest of his atts aren't bad.

263e0ed31cc8c7314f644f30ca1708e1.png

O'Halloran to me looks like the best player of the intake - certainly the one closest to first team level.

1165de3e0f8f6f30297493a1251a3037.png

Clarke complete the trio of hot prospects - a traditional winger with pace and technique.

Cheers! Yeah he's definitely got the mental profile for it :)

Here's the teams for this season, we're expected to struggle, though I'm surprised we're predicted to finish behind Wexford. Without Shelbourne this league looks wide open.

Drogheda and ourselves are expected to struggle. Dundalk and Cork have kept the title away from Dublin for the last 7 seasons between them.

Cabo 2021 Season Review

ec6e6b47db701883bc4e77ea8d25a2b9.png

We managed to get the job done, staying up, but it wasn't an exciting season by any stretch.

Results

39f8afec83f47eed770e3b3e2a519879.png33778de3ff3f76f1589755118fb8a9e3.png

Not too much to say, asides from an awful March and early exits in all the cups it was a bunch of mixed results.

League Table

0ead212b714d5000b1e4f6c96f84f24a.png

Sligo were the surprise at the top, while Waterford were the surprise at the bottom. 17 points from relegation is a great position to be in but we're well off the top teams.

Player Stats

f2088f5209a6592839f45d92e0fc72a7.png

Rob Manley became our number 9 while Clucas was injured so he managed to get into double figures. Player of the season was our keeper McGuinness, who at 4.5* is rated as a good first division player, showing the (lack of) quality of our team!

Facilities

16819402463562b80c85d1eb38350964.png

Good JC and above average YR is a really good step in the right direction, hopefully we can get a 'star' or two soon.

Finances

816149706370e6955c5f126fb4517d63.png

With nearly £60k in the bank we're in the best position we've been in sincd the startt of the save. Not exactly the kind of many to make any big upgrades or go pro though!

We're expected to struggle again. Although it's been a while since a Dublin side won the league, the capital takes up 6 out of the 10 sides after UCD's promotion! Good news for us as we get 'big' crowds for the Dublin games.

Byrne is the first player to come through that I genuinely believe will make a big difference :D

a5142ce22dad41e3677cf3ecdd91707a.png

Ryan looks like he will become a key centre back.

e409da9ea6c0575a37c011ea70b94dd1.png

Brady is a bit meh but 2* CA shouldn't be knocked.

1dab75d1516d0450077efc7fd40fceac.png

Moloney could develop into a well rounded defender.

On the pitch....

Oh, Cabinteely... One of the few clubs i still have nightmares about. I remember, back in the days, two of my friends and myself chose them to play simultaneously. And while both of them got promoted quickly, i stayed in second division for 5 or 6 years, missing promotion due last day bottle jobs or in playoffs, before finally getting sacked. Fun fact, one of those guys has won Europa League. And i still couldn't get promoted. Oh, how i started to hate this club...

But best of luck to you. My rant has ended. :D

Interesting start, I always like following your careers!

I've played in this league over a number of editions and I've found that all out attack seems to be the way to go, are you still using Sacchi like tactics?

It's funny to see that Wexford are the perennial whipping boys in this country. I'm about 6 seasons in with St. Pats and they've finished bottom of the first division every year except one. They did have a senior cup run to the semi finals one year though where I beat them.

That regen looks fantastic for that level (and the one above). Hopefully he can be the catalyst for your return to the top flight.

I've been using out the box 4-3-3 gegenpress throughout the save, though I switched to a 4-2-3-1 to accommodate O'Keeffe in his best role. May need to re-think in the new season but We've definitely been going for it rather than holding out.

If I were to get sacked from Cabinteely I think I'd have to jump over to Wexford to see if I can change that :D

We managed to shake off our early season poor form to grab a place in the playoffs but this time it wasn't to be. Bray face Derry, who will then face UCD for a place in the top flight.

0bbda227628fabed2d045d6dc7355246.png

Bray got to the final vs UCD but the students kept their place. Galway replace Limerick, I'm hoping we can get playoffs again and get lucky.

6a690f4054731b0426ca11707eed0c7a.png

Some of our young prospects are starting to shine through ahead of the original squad - O'Halloran, Doherty, Moloney, Ryan and Byrne all now regular first teamers with the latter our top scorer. Fox and Clucas are still performing above their means.

9679d6c137392744372f0263aab92716.png

We've got the best junior setup in the country, but it's come at a price...

That's a lot of debt for a small club!!!
