Escape From The Continent

This save is inspired by @Makoto Nakamura, whose current Cyprus save has given me the idea to do something similar (although it won't be anywhere near as good).

The premise of this comes from a 3 month trip to Europe at the end of last year. Being from Australia that was a huge trip and I had a great time and some really great experiences. Anyway, the last leg of my trip was supposed to be Ireland, after starting in England, then heading to France, followed by Spain, Italy, Greece, Germany, and then finally Ireland. My family that I stayed with in Ireland had other ideas. About 3 days into my stay there (I was supposed to be there for 10 days) my cousin says to me 'oh hey why don't you come to Tenerife with us?' As the weather in Ireland at that point was the typical Irish weather, you didn't have to ask me twice!

So fast forward a couple of days and we are down in Cork airport, catching a flight to Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, a part of Spain but closer to the coast of Africa.

It's not a huge island but has close to a million people. I must say, this was the most fun I had on the trip. There wasn't a cloud in the sky, sun, sand, fantastic food, and one of the best water parks in the world, Siam Park. It's also the location of Spain's highest point, Mt Teide, an active volcano that last erupted in 1909.

The club that I will be managing will be the biggest club on the island, Club Deportivo Tenerife. I took a shine to them after having walked nearly 3 kilometres to get to their fan shop so I could buy a jersey.

They currently play in the Spanish second division, but have been promoted to La Liga 4 times, their last time being 2010 and their longest stint occurring from 1989 to 1999. They have finished as high as 5th in the top division and have played in the UEFA Cup (now the Europa League) twice during that period.

Good luck with this Shaun! I was the same when I went to Mallorca, expect I couldn't be bothered to walk to the fan shop.

Thanks mate! I was supposed to go to Mallorca but ran out of time, Spain is definitely a place I'm going back to, I didn't spend nearly enough time there!

There's a bit of expectation there, but I'm confident I will manage it.

Save Aims

Obviously, to do as well as I can with the team, focusing heavily on youth coming from within the Canary islands. To supplement this, I will be making signings, but they must have been born in the Canary Islands. I hope to win La Liga with an all Canarian side, and then by extension win the Champions League and all other major competitions as well. If a player comes through my youth intake and is not from the Canary Islands, he will be adopted as one of our own and will be considered Canarian by all means.

2018 Preseason

Not a great start. I'm attributing it to the fact the team are getting used to the tactics, but I'm not certain.

The last two transfers were made by me, all the rest were made earlier. Both players I bought are definitely ones for the future.

We had a mixed month, finally winning our first competitive game, following that up with another win against fellow Canarian side Las Palmas, before bowing out of the cup, drawing against a beatable Cordoba and an extremely unlucky loss to Cadiz in which we spent the last hour with 10 men.

A disappointing month, with the only match we won being the only match I used instant result. Drawing against Extremadura was unacceptable as well, we took the lead with seconds remaining but conceded immediately after.

Just curious about how many players from Canary Islands are available for you to sign? Playing a similar challenge in Italy with just players from Calabria and only got around 200 of them available (needless to say far fewer of this are actually any good). So how many appear in your filters?

Good luck with this, always find saves with an emotional pull/connection are the ones we get most invested in! That is no small undertaking though given what I guess will be a low selection of quality players! Think you're definitely aiming in the right direction focusing on youth, interested to see how you get on!

Thanks mate! Yeah the sample size is quite small, I may have to raid Las Palmas, as much as I don't want to. But as you said, the focus is very much internal, developing from within because that will be the best way to progress and will also make us the most money in the long term.

Two crashes later, in which I had to reload to make sure I got the exact same results over the previous two months, we finally got to the end. 12th is an okay finish for a first season, it leaves us with plenty of room to grow.

Hmm.

He's wanted by 13 clubs, some of which are Villarreal, Sevilla and the above Bilbao, who came 5th, 6th and 7th in La Liga. He's not going anywhere yet, not until I know how good he can be. I don't understand why Bilbao would make an offer for a player that doesn't have Basque heritage at all.

Despite doing absolutely nothing transfer wise, we have moved up one spot to be predicted 7th. I'm not so sure that's possible. I just want top half.

Either Bilbao heritage or U16s are allowed if you haven't run one before/didn't know.

Also, solid first season, just short of expectations but room to build, hopefully you can get some youth upgrades or something to propel you forward :)

Ah okay, I didn't know that one!

Thanks, as you can see we have upgraded both the junior coaching and youth recruitment, but all I am looking for at the moment is time to develop.

Up the Canaries! Love the idea of having an all-Canarian side winning La Liga - long way to go yet taking into account the mixed start. All the best!!

Thanks mate! I agree, I think it will take us 5-10 seasons to get into La Liga alone!

What a month! Naranjo has finally discovered that as a striker he is allowed to score goals, collecting 5 in 4 games to nearly double his total for the season. We are looking untouchable at the moment, and the playoff positions are certainly in reach.

2020 Youth Intake

5b8b124c596353736885a3600dea7c18.png

A great intake. We are woefully short at CB and wing backs are extremely rare, and to get both so early is brilliant. Take particular notice of our headline graduate, as I reckon he can be a world beater if developed well.

After a great win against Zaragoza, our run ended away to (then) 19th place Pontevedra. Then we lost to Albacete and everything was looking like it was going to collapse. But a hard fought win against Cadiz has seemingly steadied the ship, but we have a tough April.

Our April fixtures are 1st placed Pamplona, 9th place Gijon, Vallodolid who are 8th and 12th Huesca. The first and last games are home, and are probably the ones that we need to win the most. Las Palmas and by extension a playoff spot are within range and these last 8 games are going to be quite nerve wracking.

We started off so well! But then the loss to Valladolid and an own goal being the difference against Huesca puts us 4 points out of the playoffs with 6 games to go. But we have a dream run now, with 5 of our 6 games against opposition in the bottom half of the table.

We did everything we could and were near perfect this month, Logrones equalised late which means that our fate depends on our final game. We are away against 18th place Lugo, and Zaragoza are away to 16th placed Pontevedra. A draw will mean Zaragoza must win to make the playoffs, whereas a win for us means we have sealed a playoff spot.

An excellent season, considering the struggles we had last year and at the beginning of the season. At the end of the day, I'm not too disappointed to miss out on the playoffs. It gives a fantastic platform to continue next year though, and maybe some of those youth players can feature.

2020 Preseason

8303059a7081ee151be5e17eccb56103.png

Pretty straightforward preseason, ran it close against top quality opposition in Napoli and Ajax, and then the routine disposal of our affiliate clubs.

Transfers

81a41c7c51dfda5f0b5c02fd3036c3ff.png

Plenty of activity on both sides, I decided to sell one of our best prospects because it doesn't look as though he will become a natural in the positions I use, so I negotiated a reasonable enough offer with Villarreal and they complied, but not before I negotiated a 2 season loan and 50% of the next sale. He's looking like he will be a great player so here's hoping I will get a nice bit of money for him. We also lost Moreno, getting 750k in compensation for him, so I loaned him back to us anyway because he will most likely play a role in the back half of the season.

As for the buys, I've mostly focused on strengthening our defence, which was phenomenal last season, and hopefully with these new additions can only be more so.

Predicted 7th, but considering Barcelona B can't get promoted, a playoff spot is the goal.

After I have finished reading your save in Andorra (which is epic at last!:D), looks like you're in a big luck to manage a team from Canary Islands. Hopefully, this team will make it better to take it to the top! Tenerife had a lot of teams coming from both Spain and Northeastern African teams to get with, but a roster composed of Canarian natives would also be awesome!

Good luck in your current season!:)
