Mid-Season Update

Turkish Cup

No worries so far in the cup as we smash through 2nd tier opposition.

Super League

5899318a8a1aafd54fb82684cec67aa2.png

5 wins from 5 to kick start the season in style, including good wins against Genclerbirligi and Galatasaray away.

65d39df57a290ae8c1baeddcd5ead1b3.png

Incredibly we made it 10 wins from 10 to start the season, conceding just 1 in those ten, as we stormed through another 5 sides including my old one Antalyaspor.

bec9b5e7ec97bc732c94eabfcb2bf13e.png

Slipped up a bit in November as we recorded our first loss of the season in Boluspor, before drawing twice with Osmanlispor and Eskisehirspor.

bb019a24fa7d0060539d1f8dfccab0a0.png

We picked up a big win against Fenerbache and then won another two more tough matches against Bursaspor and Kayserispor away.

Sitting pretty in 1st place at the mid-way point, although Boluspor who did beat us are doing well to keep up with our pace, sitting just 6 points behind us. Nobody else anywhere near really.

Champions League

efb5fdfee4dc0d9fbaa3eb17429a1698.png

We very nearly recorded an opening day win at home to Real Madrid, but they annoyingly came from behind late on to steal a point.

856fe924405dae49a2e5773c488f51e5.png

We picked up another draw, again one we could have won, as we travelled to Benfica at the Estadio da Luz.

a6d554d655a496a9258a9916fec7bdf3.png

A brace from Nicolas Florez gave us all 3 points at  home to Rangers.

Rangers got a last gasp equaliser in injury time to prevent us getting all 3 points in Scotland too.

The less said about this the better. A horrific display in Madrid saw us somehow lose 6-0.

b71dbd8ae00ae0f4a4c03425d2327882.png

We at least restored a bit of pride by smashing Benfica 4-0 in the final game of the group to ensure progression.

Valencia away in the Round of 16.

Pablo at 32 was an extremely good squad player to have, struggled to get into the team a bit on the left or up-front this season so far, got more game-time with injuries last season. Guangzhou came in with mega money which was ludicrous really, doubled his wages to like £240K or something, at that age and that price I could not say no and had to sell really. Will give me a nice budget in the summer.

Needed a back-up striker with Pablo on his way out so got this Turkish lad in on for a decent price from Genclerbirligi of all teams.

End of Season Update

Turkish Cup

cbdffa72a55f06b109be857fad06764e.png

Not the easiest run to the final, but we made more or less every game look like it was easy.

8308ff697a7cd6094fda29540f56351d.png

A pretty cool final as I faced off against my old side Antalyaspor, with a nice 3-1 win to boot.

Champions League

d8e81a8657f9a991f22591fe69d87245.png

We did reasonably well against Valencia until the last 5 minutes where we capitulated, letting them get 2 more vital away goals which kind of killed the tie.

9e924ac0924f911badbb25046cb3d07c.png

We lost the return away leg too, to make it 4-1 on aggregate.

A disappointing end to our season in Europe really.

Super League

574bf75e558ee713011e3641be5f5f5d.png

4 wins from 5 into the new year, with just Trabzonspor getting the better of us.

98e3244e680e055a423c467499e53ecb.png

We took two losses and a draw in our next 3, as our form really hit a big dip.

293535125e2580a96cc28e03f4418332.png

It picked up a bit in our next 4 games, although we lost a big title 6 pointer us Boluspor ensured they did the double over us.

82707540d6cc09857ebe5a39d8be6f05.png

5 points from our final 9 as we looked to retain the title, we got lucky to even draw with both Bursaspor and Kayserispor in all honestly.

ea20454ace4f24241d91a0bcc69c3124.png

A bit of a limp to the finish line but we did retain the title in the end, fair play to Boluspor who pushed us all the way.

0199acd65b61af8c99571aa4ea3088de.png

Nicolas Florez the Colombian left winger our best performer, with 18 goals and 10 assists across the season.

0ec8cd356135fb9ef6ede7de13baa5eb.png

Martin Maidana also worthy of praise, with the Argentine striker netting 25 times and getting 6 assists.

Real Madrid beat Man City in the final to win their first European crown for 54 years.

A great run for RB Salzburg sees them reach the Quarter Finals before being smashed out by eventual finalists City, whilst Standard Liege made it 2 Belgian sides in the Last 16 alongside Anderlecht.

Chelsea win the Europa League by beating Liverpool on a shoot-out, after a memorable run that saw them renew the age old Chelsea/Vitesse feud in the Semi Final.

A good performance from Oud Huverlee of Belgium saw them reach the final 8, with Sparta Prague also noticeable Last 16 members.

Fenerbache went out to Rangers in the Playoff, probably a fair loss really. Both us and Galatasaray make the final 16 of the Champions League, perhaps they should've gone through against Salzburg.

Antalyaspor perhaps should've got past Spartak Moscow I guess.

Genclerbirligi went out of a group of Hamburger, Partizan and St Gallen. Not a great showing from them by any means.

Bursaspor and Fenerbache both doing reasonably well in the Europa.

Belgium go ahead of us which isn't great but not the end of the world, although France aren't a million miles away and that would be a bit of a bummer.

Main departure saw 30 year old  CAM Kevin Naessens leave. He was starting last season a lot but in the last year of his contract he didn't want to renew, so we flogged him in the window, bizarrely ended up going to Sparta Prague in Czech Republic. I was surprised they had that much money to blow but fair play I guess.

Dipped into the window a bit, mainly in South America with two very good pick-ups for first team action. We also picked up another fairly young and promising Turkish lad who can offer rotation/depth with potential to break into the first team at some point in the future.

Mid-Season Update

Turkish Cup

So far, so good.

Super League

f0448ce10ee17a473995f6cfe394b629.png

A fantastic start to the season, with 5 wins from 5, including another win against my old side Antalayspor.

4910caed3574fc018a7e2475009b7beb.png

A draw with Trabzonspor, before a few more wins and then a big bad loss at Galatasaray. We bounced back with a truly mental 6-3 win at home to Genclerbirligi.

0eb54bea6bde34ff4a37f59fcdaa8f74.png

4 wins from 4 in November, including a good win against Fenerbache.

18480d2d7706071a5536851757c0ba56.png

A draw against Konyaspor, before two more wins to round up the calendar year.

97c92233b1e50f89f359dcecb45f8faf.png

Top of the league at the mid-way point, although old rivals Genclerbirligi are just 5 points off of us despite our good form.

Champions League

6b5170c33d84c75cccdaeeb4989ab5ba.png

We had a chance to exact some revenge on Valencia for knocking us out last year, before we lost to them again on the opening day of the group stage.

ccb6baf26d7019fb515e6fa83eecab76.png

We narrowly scraped a win in Switzerland to Basel, with a last minute strike from Maidana coming following their man getting the red.

1bd63a4a00ba238494a6d8b6889d104c.png

A good win against my old side St Mirren, with a 2-0 home victory a massive moment for us in the group.

f7135395a7fbdf120c389732bff0cdeb.png

A 1-1 draw in a return to Paisley.

6c1a1c97a9c7b2c035fef24f5a515246.png

Another loss to Valencia who seem to be something of a bogey side!

4b9eec6221313d48007aa5b228ad0c94.png

Omar Saidi's strike saw us past Basel on the last day of the group.

We progress in the group, although Valencia of course top it.

Not really the draw we wanted as we got last year's champions Real Madrid in the Last 16.

Winter Window

Out

The main departure saw Turkish keeper Alican Zenglin leave for Serie A in a £17.5M deal. You may remember he was one of the main signings in my first window at Besiktas, but if I'm honest he was a bit of a flop signing. Not a flop player as he is a very adept goalkeeper, but I misjudged how good the guy we already had at the club was and Zengin was unable to stake his claim for first choice so he has left. A decent young player Baris Ozkaya also left for a good fee, he's not a bad player and could be a squad player, but in his  position there is a lot of talent ahead of him and I can't see him ever starting for us. A side as good as Sporting Lisbon being interested could mean my coaching staff are wrong on this one though.

An experienced 2nd choice Turkish keeper signed to replace the departing Alican, not quite as good by any means but you don't need a brilliant 2nd choice keeper really.

End of Season Update

Turkish Cup

0f971e4e69edc4df6b2a4348e4bc0d73.png

An absolutely shocking exit in the Turkish Cup Semi Final as we somehow blow a 3 goal lead and bow out on penalties. Terrible scenes.

Champions League

4edefaeecd18d2d3ef0857876e5af591.png

A huge 1-0 victory in our first leg against champions Real Madrid, as we keep them out and put ourselves in contention of a surprise upset.

8358baf9b9ee492e6f154cb77c43635d.png

We took an early lead in Madrid to make it 2-0 on aggregate, with an away goal in the bag, but they got a goal back not long after and one just before half-time to make it level on aggregate, although we still lead on away goals. They got another goal about 15 minutes from time which put us out, with just 1 more goal being needed to take us through on away goals.

Super League

771d30221489f7b10b885e89212af31b.png

3 draws to start the new year, before a couple of 1-0 wins to get back on track.

fdb9d614c6b8de078630e1765eaab4cb.png

A surprise loss to Trabzonspor at home, before 4 straight wins including big ones against Galatasaray and Genclerbirligi.

cbdd6b75986dcbba81a40c6b594c33e5.png

4 wins from 4 in April with no real worries.

0e529f2c995cdd1fbc4c8ba7ab557451.png

A random loss to Konyaspor, before winning both of our last two games.

07bfa9b844f576fd5ec6d4c6ef430b2d.png

We won quite comfortably in the end, with Galatasaray coming closest, and Boluspor joining us in the Champions League.

Nicolas Perreira was a rock at the back again, with Nicolas Florez impressing on the left wing once more and Martin Maidana having a good season up-front before his injury, with 26 goals and 3 assists in 39 games.

Nations Remaining

(based on nation coefficient ranking)

  1. Turkey
  2. Austria
  3. Switzerland
  4. Czech Republic (+1)
  5. Denmark (-1)
  6. Romania (+4)
  7. Serbia (+5)
  8. Poland (+1)
  9. Bulgaria (-3)
  10. Ukraine (-3)
  11. Norway (+3)
  12. Greece (+1)
  13. Croatia (-5)
  14. Sweden (-3)
  15. Iceland
  16. Israel
  17. Slovenia
  18. Republic of Ireland
  19. Slovakia
  20. Hungary
  21. Finland
  22. Wales
  23. Belarus
  24. Northern Ireland

Czech Republic now the highest rated nation not currently loaded. Croatia have absolutely caned down the rankings in the last few years. I was actually eyeing them up as the potential next nation to be loaded, but there's no chance of that at the minute. Czech Rep or Denmark most likely based on how things are now.

The side who knocked us out in Madrid ultimately reach the final, just besting Valencia the team who bested us in the group and last season.

It seems to be a bit of a revival for the traditional top sides in the last few years, as Man United win in the final to prevent Real Madrid retaining. This represents United's first CL crown for 20 years, with it being England's first for 19 since Chelsea last won it. Salzburg in the knockout stages again.

An all PH71 final as Atletico beat Wolfsburg on penalties to win it.

A good run for Bursaspor who made the Semi Final. Slavia Prague, Rapid Vienna and Dinamo Zagreb all flying the flag for their respective nations in the last 16, maybe that from Dinamo will boost Croatia back up a bit next year.

Basel make it 2 in a row, with St. Gallen grabbing the other CL spot again.

Interestingly, Vaduz, the Liechenstein side that were newly promoted, reached 4th, which would usually deem that entry into the Europa League at the 3rd Qualifying Round, but because they are a guest in the Swiss league they only qualify for Europe based on winning the Liechenstein Cup, so they still start in the 1st Qualifying Round, regardless of league finish or if they win the Swiss Cup. Incidentally they can only ever qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League and not by winning the Swiss league.

That's mental :D

17 in a row for Salzburg, with Rapid Vienna 2nd again. SKN St. Polten again miss out on Europa via a playoff.

A 2nd straight title for Shakhtar, with nobody really near them.

Fenerbache went out in the playoff to Celtic, which I guess is fair enough really, but they shouldn't have gone out of Europa to Slavia Prague really.

Boluspor had a tough group of Chelsea, Marseille and Sporting Lisbon which you couldn't really expect them to do much in.

We of course went out to Real Madrid, whilst Genclerbirligi went out of Europa to Real Sociedad. Galatasaray made it an Old Firm double as they went out of Europa to Rangers, whilst Bursaspor of course did well in the Europa by making the Semi before falling to the strong Wolfsburg.

Summer Transfers

A few squad players left but nobody that exciting.

77aa4e2a2e808466e17654a9cb5aa1fd.png

I signed a few Turkish squad players in Enes Koc and Tolga Ak, as well as a German freebie striker in Leon Dickhaut who joins from Frankfurt on a bosman. I don't expect any of these guys to see serious action unless there's some serious injuries.

The main signing was Rodney in the midfield. The Brazilian looks a real talent.

Mid-Season Update

Turkish Cup

dd27e428b1b4a2b389272069419c98c3.png

Our second string smashed a lower league side in our only tie so far.

Super League

bdebd4d36af894c3497a3bde4603285c.png

A good start to the season with 4 wins from 5, with my old side Antalyaspor taking some points off of us.

cbe1cce4289db58dd9227b3fb7e929fd.png

We kept smashing through teams, especially Osmanlispor who were on the end of a real beating, before Kayserispor surprised us with a 2-1 loss at the end of the month.

5be4a64722037f4336165f68f00ec17f.png

We almost lost two on the bounce as Eskisehirspor almost held onto a 1-0 win save for a late Martin Maidana leveller. We did win our 3 matches in November though.

a94f82df664cf23526d8f0bf7aa95d20.png

A solid end to the calendar year, with 3 wins from 3, including a lovely smashing of Genclerbirligi.

ea078713cf53e187e2c8f3bf8d1c1669.png

6 points clear at Christmas, with Kayserispor randomly at the front of the pack. They haven't finished higher than 3rd in 15 years and it's been almost 30 years since they last won the title back when they were still something of a threat. It would be cool to see them come back again I guess, although I doubt they'll reach the dizzy heights of the early 2030's where they won 4 on the bounce.

Champions League

a8775969ac76ff40039e1c6095e802e3.png

An opening day loss to Porto, who came from behind to win 3-1 in an irritating game.

cb6b750ae7681c4d97bae59d15e9f13a.png

We took the lead against Schalke in Germany and I was really hoping for a win, but they came from behind much like Porto did although we held onto a point.

2be9552218c3c2bfc27e48381d326a9f.png

A smashing 4-0 win against Sparta Prague, with Martin Maidana grabbing a hat-trick.

4beae8bbf741c8061198f5ab8bda5e31.png

A Birigui brace sees us get 3 points again at home to them.

7848483280a52d53ba53c5857c69f6e8.png

We got some revenge on Porto by beating them away from home.

e134c2edf8ff1d03db87fc5acbfd2575.png

A big goal from Ali Durak gave us a vital all 3 points against Schalke in our bid to qualify top of the group.

322fec7cdcca68061be59d814452e4e2.png

A good performance overall as we top the group for the first time under Thierry's management.

12d85d80b72ba1f89f678f3ffaafa354.png

A return to Anderlecht to see a lot of familiar faces should make for a fun set of matches.

Some interesting ties elsewhere as we have an all Red Bull derby as well as Wolfsburg vs Vitesse in a tasty all-PH71 affair.

January seemed to be a tipping point for a lot of fringe and back-up squad players in our admittedly quite bloated team.

The biggest departure saw Ercan Albayrak, a fairly promising Tukrish CAM leave for Inter Milan. Ali Kaya at 32 has been a loyal servant and great squad player to the side, but he wanted some first team football so he's gone to Holland to get some.

Ganso the 4th choice CB joined a Saudi Arabian side and to be fair I would've liked to replace him with someone, but he only got sold just as the transfer window was shutting and I didn't have time. Will have to hope we can get by with 3 until end of the season.

A very tight first leg in Madrid, with a late Atletico goal preventing us from getting the win, but we did get 2 lovely away goals.

1c17f63d71e11aee269f03d97e1f6e70.png

A 20th minute penalty gave us the lead early on, meaning Atletico needed 2 on the night without reply to go through, but then their left back managed to score an own goal after a mix up with the keeper, meaning they needed 2 just to take it to extra-time.

They did start off promisingly in the 2nd half, but then they had a midfielder sent off for a 2nd yellow and it went down hill for them. I looked to frustrate them by stretching them and keeping possession, which worked great when the lad who got the own goal capped off his night by getting a straight red for a horrendous challenge.

We're in the Semi Final!

Another former PH71 side in Vitesse await us there.

End of Season Update

Turkish Cup

1f4dd55176903a7324fb0bee9f574463.png

Galatasaray knocked us out again this season on penalties once more, this time in the final itself. A good run and unfortunately just couldn't get it done on the day.

Super League

61381f916da30c482018440493df93ef.png

We came out swinging in the new year, with 5 wins from 5 without any issues really.

08a262d4ec20fd1c948a125d49a98acd.png

We had a bit of a mare at the end of February going into March, as we went 5 whole games without a win, with 3 draws and 2 losses. Not great.

 4becabba2a86002929e042d846ee1b33.png

We got two wins under our belt, but then lost two more on the bounce, before winning another 2 then losing on the final day to Genclerbirligi.

1b37f811543927794f307d4e5956bd02.png

The title ended up being a lot closer than I would have liked in the end, but we thankfully still got it done.

Akhisarspor had a nightmare, with just 5 points all season. They join Yeni and once winners Kasimpasa in going down.

Champions League

6468b6c6a933972d37fcaec3686de4e4.png

An excellent first leg win against Vitesse saw us with one foot in the final...

2655f38bb3d69bd13f76a98e3088e2a7.png

:ackter:

Injuries did see our first choice goalkeeper, right back, centre back, central midfielder, left winger and central attacking midfielder all out injured, with first choice right winger Birigui getting injured in the match and going off before half-time, but still not ideal to be losing 6-1 :D

Rodney had a very good first season at CM, but I can't really have him as one of the star performers as he only ended up starting 25 games, with sprained knee ligaments and then a broken foot causing him to miss like 3 months of the season.

Fabio Luiz was good at CAM, with Nicolas Florez and Nicolas Perreira doing well.

Vitesse actually went onto win the thing, picking up their 3rd ever Champions League trophy, beating a strong Valencia side in the final, who smashed Sporting Lisbon even worse than Vitesse did us!

The Europa League saw a win for Real Sociedad, who beat Benfica in the final.

3 in a row for Basel, with St.Gallen 3 in a row runners-up. Another pretty decent year for Vaduz, who finish 4th.

It's yet another win for RB Salzburg, but my word did Rapid Vienna make them work for it.

Boluspor knocked out by a strong Rapid Vienna side, but to be honest I'd want them to be winning that.

Fenerbache did okay in the Europa League, before bowing out to Shakhtar, whilst Bursaspor went out to Benfica which you can certainly forgive.

Galatasaray of course went out to PSG which you have to say is fair, whilst Boluspor went out to Standard Liege which I suppose is probably a 50/50 tie.

Trabzonspor not a great side in our league so can forgive them going out to STVV, although unless they've done well recently I don't recall STVV ever being particularly amazing so maybe they shouldn't have gone out.

Summer Transfers

The main departure saw first choice keeper leave for Arsenal. He picked up a nasty injury towards the end of  the season and with 1 year left on his contract and Arsenal interested, I saw it as a decent time to cash in on the 32 year old.

His replacement, the German Torben Korpke, did not come cheap, but that's for a reason as he looks like an excellent keeper even for the £37M price tag.

We also dipped into the market to get a new right winger, with Argentine Martin Cruasaz joining us from Dinamo Zagreb, he too looks like a pretty good player.

Mid-Season Update

Turkish Cup

We recorded two 5-0 victories over lower league side. Happy days.

Super Lig

We won our first four games of the season with no issues really, but then on the 5th match day we were annoyingly turned over by the old enemy Genclerbirligi away from home.

22c7de90e77b831c6dccb7bee272364d.png

We recovered well to win 4 from our next 5, with a draw away to Fenerbache the only points being dropped.

4 from 4 as we approached the winter, with Martin Maidana in good form.

Our good from continued in December, with 2 wins and 1 draw against Manisaspor.

Having dropped points just three times we're 6 points clear of Genclerbirligi at the half-way stage.

I wasn't sure what to expect from Celta Vigo as I haven't seen all that much of them really. They were an okay side but didn't threaten us too much as we beat them 2-0, with a brace from cult hero of the club Ali Durak.

Sporting Lisbon always a tough side, on this occasion we came away with a point though.

A decent draw at the Parc des Princes.

A massive win in our bid to qualify and top the group, as we put the French champions to the sword.

We could only manage a point away to Celta Vigo after a horrendous own goal from our keeper, although it wasn't particularly his fault and was quite unfortunate in that it hit the bar then went off him.

A big big win against Sporting Lisbon on the last day sees us top the group. We were 3-0 up after 18 minutes which was brilliant, they did try to come back but luckily they couldn't manage it.

A nervy night in Rome, but a big goal from Rodney just before half-time put us in good stead going into the second half, where thankfully one of their midfielders got a 2nd yellow which helped us out.

It looked like it would go to extra-time, as Juan Luis Merino's goal didn't look like it would be answered. Incredibly we bagged 3 in the last 7 minutes of the game, including 2 in injury time, to prevent extra-time and book ourselves a place in the Quarter Finals.

Man United await us.

A nervy first leg with United, but a goal from Brazilian star Fabio Luiz was the difference in the end as we kept them from getting an away goal.

A bumper crowd at Old Trafford saw us draw 1-1, which meant we progressed to the Semi Final 2-1 on aggregate.

Porto in the Semi Final, with Marseille and Celtic in the other one.

We took a page out of Vitesse's book from last year as we absolutely rinsed Porto in our first leg. Leon Dickhaut got 4 goals against them, with Florez and Fabio Luiz also on the score-sheet. They did get two away goals but it would take some doing to come back from that.

bc7f93d71e65faec72543c92c814a054.png

All we had to do was go to Portugal and defend as they needed 4 goals without reply on the night to beat us. We took a lead in the first half and whilst they levelled things up on the night, it was still 7-3 on aggregate and plain sailing into the final.

We play at the Stade de France and will face none other than Celtic, as Scottish football comes back to the forefront.

David Johnson: You join us live here in Paris for the 2085 Champions League final. What a game we've got for you tonight, as Besiktas, in their maiden Champions League final, take on Celtic, who in their 202nd year as a club, are back in the Champions League final, for the first time in over a century, as it was 118 years ago that they won their only European crown in Lisbon.

Celtic have of course had some success in European football since Scottish football's revival in the last few decades. They won the Europa League in both 2068 and 10 years ago in 2075, following both of those up with a European Super Cup victory as well.

Besiktas too have reached a few Europa League finals in recent years, with a win in 2076 and finishing runners-up just 4 years ago under Thierry. They were of course favorites to win that final and in certainly the bookies have them as favourites to win tonight.

I'm joined in the studio by former Manchester United and England midfielder, Vinny Booty, who of course played under Thierry at Anderlecht, before moving to Marseille and actually had a 1 year loan spell at Besiktas, a couple of years before Thierry joined the club.

And representing the Scottish contingent, we have another former England international, Shane Walker, who played at St Mirren for two seasons under Thierry before moving to Celtic and helping them win both of those aforementioned Europa League titles.

Vinny we go to you first, do you think the bookies are right to favorite Besiktas here tonight?

Vinny Booty:  Alright, Dave. To be honest mate yeah I do think Besiktas are the better side on the paper. Well I say paper of course it's 2085 init so paper you know not really a thing any more, save the polar bears and all that green stuff yeah, but anyway, I think defo if Besiktas came up against Celtic in the knockout rounds, ove the course of two legs you'd definitely fancy 'em to do 'em.

I think Besiktas and Theirry 'ave been knocking on the door for a few years now. And erm yeah I just think they're gonna do it and you look round that stadium tonight and I think these Besiktas fans really fancy it. It's their first ever final and I think you know it's written in the stars tonight, Dave, I really do.

David Johnson: Thanks Vinny. And you Shane, are you in agreement with Vinny?

Shane Walker: Well, to be honest I think that everybody writing Celtic off actually plays right into the hands of both the club, the manager, the players, even the fans I think tonight. You know I think they're all out there tonight with the green and white, there's some Scottish flags, some Irish flags there as well of course and I think it's a party atmosphere tonight because it's been so long since they've made a final.

I think much is made of the Turkish fans and their atmosphere but come on it's Celtic, man, you know they're bringing the noise as well tonight. I don't think you can write them off it's a one off final and Celtic have proved that they can do it in these finals.

I look at Thierry and you know he's a good manager, helped me in the early days of my career, but one thing certainly that was apparent in Scotland and I think something that has maybe been the one blot on his record is that his record in finals is not that great.

I mean even going back to the Scottish Cup finals you know he lost quite a few of those and I think every Champions League he's won so far, with St. Mirren of course and Anderlecht in Belgium most recently, with both of those wins they came after defeats in finals. He's never taken a team to their first Champions League final and won it first time, so I think that will be weighing on his and maybe the player's mind, you know of both teams and I think that could be a help for Celtic tonight I really do.

And I think the idea that they're underdogs again I think is a bit of a myth. I know Besiktas have been pushing strong in this competition in the last few years, but Celtic have been right up there, they've reached two Quarter Finals in the last 4 years and on one of those they were only out by penalties. They've taken out Wolfsburg and Marseille to get this far, you know they're both good teams and they'll be up for it tonight.

David Johnson: Well thanks for that Shane. Two opposing views in the studio. We're gonna take a short break and when we come back we're gonna delve a little bit deeper into that Celtic side and their manager.

David Johnson: We're back again folks and we're gonna have a closer look at the Celtic side that everybody is talking about as underdogs tonight.

Their managed tonight by the 70 year old Georgian, Davit Kipiani, Kipiani of course a legend in his home country, made his name playing for Chornomorets and then in La Liga with Granada and Espanyol, winded up with 135 caps and 62 goals for his country.

Kipiani made his name really at Standard Liege in the early 2060's, after managing a few Russian sides he got the call to Liege and helped them win two Belgian titles before getting a move, strangely enough, to Celtic's biggest rivals Rangers, where he took them to a league and cup double in 2067, before getting the call to Vitesse where he won the Eredivise and all of the domestic cups.

Vitesse sacked him though in his 2nd season for failing to retain that title and that was when he became a real controversial figure in Scotland as that summer of 69 he ended up taking over at Celtic for his first spell in charge, he only stayed there two seasons but he did give them a title which went down very well in Glasgow, although not from the blue side of course.

He left Celtic for the bright lights of Benfica in Portugal in 2071, he stayed there for 4 years and to be honest it was a fairly underwelming spell with only a Taca de Portugal to his name. He eventually left in the summer of 2075 and got a move to the German giants of Red Bull in Leipzig, but he didn't really win anything there either and got the boot in the summer of 2077, interestingly enough the Red Bull hierachy clearly saw in something in him as he got a move straight away almost to RB Salzburg.

He had just 1 season in Salzburg where he won the Austrian domestic double, before hitching a move to Sporting Lisbon at the start of the 2078-79 season. He won a domestic double there before eventually leaving them in the summer of 2081 to return to Celtic, and there he has been ever since, he's won two titles for them, most recently of course this season, with the Scottish Cup in the bag too.

Kipiani has never won the Champions League and in what will surely be one of his last few seasons in football he will certainly be hoping he can do it tonight.

They've got a decent side Celtic.

The Romanian international, Corneliu Nanu in goal, a towering presence, he was of course absolutely vital last summer at the European Championships where Romania pulled off a huge upset and won the thing.

In central midfield they've got Josh Walker the English international, no relation to Shane here in the studio but a good player nonetheless.

Joel Kayembe at left wing is an experienced Belgian who will carve out a big threat tonight. The former Belgian international, now retired from international football, is a threat both at assisting and scoring and the Besiktas defence will have to keep him quiet if they want to get the win tonight.

The star of the show though is their main striker, Jean-Max Roche, an absolute legend of Haiti. At 29 years old he's got 148 goals in 110 caps for his native homeland. He's got 25 in 36 for Celtic this season, including 10 in the Champions League itself.

David Johnson: We're gonna take another quick break and we'll be right back to look at the Besiktas team and how we expect them to set up tonight.

David Johnson:

You join us once more to take a closer look at the Besiktas side likely to line up tonight. Thierry will be overjoyed to report no injuries of note so he has a full strength squad to pick from.

GK: Torben Kopke

Kopke of course signed for £37M last summer from Hamburg, he's come in and given them 30 cleansheets in 52 games so far, conceding just 13 goals in 33 league games. You can't ask for much more than that and I think they'll be confident he won't be too easy to score against tonight.

DR: Pedro Moreno

Pedro Moreno the Argentine was something of a bargain joining from Racing Club in his native country for just £10M 3 years ago and you'd have to say he'd go for at least 3 times that if they sold him now. Moreno is much more comfortable in his own half than bombing forward in the oppositions, he is lightning quick and very good at getting back and forward up the pitch, but with just 5 assists since joining the club he's much more likely to be the assist to the assister than actually sticking the ball in the box himself.

DL: Daniel Lupianez the 30 year old Spaniard was here at the club before Thierry arrived. That's certainly a position he's not had to get an upgrade for. Daniel slightly better going forward than Pedro, not quite as quick but a fair bit better at getting the ball in the middle, with 5 assists so far this season.

DC: At centre back tonight they have the tried and tested experienced partnership of Nicolas Perreira and Jeda. Again, both of these guys at the club before Thierry arrived, they've pretty much been the main partnership in defence for 7 seasons in a row. Jeda the 30 year old Brazilian and Perreira the 31 year old Frenchman. Not much gets past them and there's a big reason why Thierry has never signed a replacement for either of them.

MC: The star of the show so far this season in the midfield has certainly been the 23 year old Brazilian Rodney, signed last season and unfortunately missed a fair chunk of action with a couple of nasty injuries, he's managed to stay fitter this season and has looked really good in the middle in the advanced playmaker role. You can take nothing away from his partner though, the 26 year old Turkish international, Hayri Tomak, a bit more defensive minded, he's also been great there and has really established himself as an important part of both Besiktas and Turkey's side.

AMR: Martin Crausaz the Argentine signed in the summer to inject a bit of life into that part of the team with Birigui maybe not what he once was on that right flank. Crausaz has 11 assists and 14 goals in all competitions in his first season in Turkish football and you have to think the smart money is that he will go from strength to strength in the next few years now he's settled in.

AML: Nicolas Florez is another guy who was there before Thierry arrived at the club. He joined for £3.4M from Racing Club in 2078 and what a bargain that was in retrospect. He's maybe not shined as brightly this season as he was in the years prior, but the 28 year old is still an important part of the side and can turn it on when he really wants to.

CAM: Fabio Luiz, another Brazilian in this side, aside from maybe Rodney has to be the best player in the team. Electric on the ball and off it too, the 24 year old is a top top player and his unpredictability will surely help them against Celtic tonight.

ST: The lead striker going into this game is the German, Leon Dickhaut. He joined last summer on a free transfer after failing to negotiate a new deal with Frankfurt, a very decent player although primarily signed to play 2nd fiddle to Martin Maidana, who has been the main striker for a fair few years, although this season early on he picked up a foot injury, then when he came back failed to regain the form of the last few year's. Maidana with 14 goals in 27 starts this season, failing to impress Thierry, but in his absence the German, Dickhaut has really shone. In the Turkish Super Lig he has an incredible 14 goals in 15 starts, albeit 5 of those penalties, but he does have 5 in 6 starts in the Champions League, with 4 of those coming against Porto in that one crazy 6-2 game in the Semi Final.

On the bench of course we have Martin Maidana, also Birigui the right winger, then another guys you may look on to make a difference are Omar Saidi in the midfield, as well as the Turkish cult hero here Ali Durak, with left winger, Oguz Topcu in very solid form in the games he has played in this year too. Alican Cetindere a decent defensive option should any of the defensive unit go down.
