PaulHartman71
End of Season Update Scottish Cup I thought my loanee of 3 seasons ago Declan McCarthy had done his old boss a favour by skying his penalty, but unfortunately we had two of ours saved and ended up losing the cup on penalties to Celtic after what was a good game which we could well have won. Premiership Delgado was on a mad one as we smashed St Johnstone, we also beat Hibs and drew with Rangers and picked up two losses to Killie and Celtic. I'm not sure if we have stagnated or just benefited last season from Rangers having a bad year. 66 points would've been good enough for 2nd last season, but as I said Rangers had a bad year. We finished with 8 points less than last year, but again, even if we had got those extra 8 points that would still have only been enough for 3rd anyway. We need to work on turning some draws into wins ultimately. Ayr finally go down and it's also goodbye for now for Dundee. Rares Olteanu probably our best player, with the Spanish contingent of Dario and Alex Delgado also having strong years:

PaulHartman71
Cool to see Vitesse make another final and pretty funny that it's against a side in Chelsea that they have so much history in, would've been so sweet for the ex-feeder side, strangely enough now managed by Gianluigi Donnarumma, to topple them in the final but it wasn't to be. Portimonense make the Semi Final in an all Paul Hart Semi, with Celta Vigo a random name to see in the Champions League knockout stages. A penalty win for Atletico Madrid who beat Spurs in the final. Krasnodar end up reaching the Semi Finals, with Genclerbirligi knocked out by Barca straight away after knocking us out. Rangers make the Round of 1, with Malmo of Sweden and Maribor of Slovenia also having good runs.
PaulHartman71
2 in a row for Galatasaray, as Fenerbache end up 10 points behind them. A terrible year for Genclerbirligi as they wind up 6th and will have no Europe next year, you love to see it. Boluspor and Antalyaspor both finished above them, with the latter especially emerging as a decent side over there whilst Kayserispor's dominance becomes a distant memory. Kasimpasa who of course won 3 titles in the 2030's are fading away into obscurity at this point. A good year for Standard Liege as they make it 2 titles in 3 seasons, with KRC Genk a surprise 2nd place and Champions League spot. Oud-Heverlee Leuven, the new kids on the block as it were, will not play in Europe next season after losing the playoff to Zulte Waregem. 8 in a row for Shakhtar, with Desna back in 2nd place. Dynamo Kyiv are still in poor shape but thanks to the stronger coefficient still get the benefit of Europa League football, as do 4 other sides. PaulHartman71
] Can't begrudge Queen of the South going out so early on in what was their first (maybe ever) display in European competition. Kilmarnock go out to what in the 2060s aren't a particularly poor Stoke side by any means as they have made the Europa League group stage 4 times in the previous 10 years. Celtic finish bottom of a CL group with United, Roma and Benfica, which again you can't really have a go at them for too much. Rangers also do well to get further than us and go out to an undoubtedly strong side in Zenit.
PaulHartman71
This summer saw three of our talented young English players poached by Premier League sides, with Newcastle especially keen to get on the "cheap" Scottish market. To be fair I don't mind being a finishing school type club for Championship players to get big Premier League moves as due to them being English they seem to command a high price. Sam Walker was also wanted by Celtic and Rangers but I refused to sell to them. Banim was a good goalkeeper who I didn't want to lose, but good goalkeepers aren't too hard to come by in the game for a decent price so it's not the end of the world to lose him. I was more concerned at losing Dyer and Walker, as it will be harder to replace them with like for like quality, although with Dyer he spent most of last season injured so not to get this good a price for someone who has the ability but has rarely had the chance to show it for us is pretty good. Walker the biggest loss as he's a very solid defender and we probably won't be able to afford someone as good as he is now. I'm hoping Marcel Aerts will be the answer to our lack of goals. A good young talent from the Belgian league who scored 6 goals in 24 games for Lokeren last season, but only started 1 of those games. They used him as a sub striker, they must have a pretty good #1 striker to not be using him because he'll definitely be first choice for us. Spearing wasn't cheap for us but another young English keeper that we pick up. This guy came from relegated from the Premier League side Fulham, who have never actually played him, instead having him as their #2 I'm guessing. He will be a great keeper in the SPL. I was a bit disappointed to sign this guy as our new central midfielder if I'm honest. He is a good player on paper and I was surprised that Girona had a release clause on him but it looks like it was only for clubs in Europe or something. I think he is pretty good for this level but at 27 he will probably not have much if any resell value for us. My scouts did have lots of young talent from the Championship and PL but unfortunately they were all out of our price range or only available on loan, so I've opted for this guy and I hope he won't let me down. This guy was signed mainly to have a versatile back-up defender. He's spent his entire career at Liverpool after coming through their youth system and looks like he's never been any more than a substitute back-up option for them, never making more than 5 starts in an entire season. He looks decent enough and being able to play either full back position is helpful too. I would've rather a HG player for Europe squad purposes but all of the Scottish players I was looking at were **** so I didn't bother. Larsen was signed once Newcastle came in a bit later in the summer for Walker and I had to get another first choice centre back. The Danish market as ever came through and we go this guy in. Larsen and Laursen in the middle of our defence, that won't be confusing at all... We were 1st seeds in the Europa League Group Stage for the very first time and got a pretty nice group to be fair: RB Salzburg, FC Midtyjlland and CFR Cluj. Salzburg won't be easy but we should hopefully qualify from this.

PaulHartman71
Mid-Season Update League Cup A solid run in the League Cup set up a final at Hampden Park with Rangers in November: A good day out for the fans, but not the result we wanted. We were 2-0 down at half-time, which quickly became 3-0 just minutes into the second half. Delgado got a goal back to make it 3-1, but then they got another to kill the game and make it 4-1. We got another goal but it was no more than a consolation. Premiership A smashing start to the season as we ripped Dundee United a new one, before annoyingly losing in Motherwell. We beat Aberdeen before losing 4-1 to Rangers and then beating Killie 4-1 ourselves, with 3 of the goals coming in injury-time in what was otherwise a quite even match. A slog of draws ensued, with 4 draws in 4 games. The result against Celtic was decent, but not getting another win in 3 games against sides we could beat did not do our bid for a Top 2 finish any good. We did at least win at Hamilton. Some decent form returned in the winter as we won 3 from 4, including a revenge win against Rangers just days after the League Cup final loss. We kind of ruined the progress we made on Rangers by then losing to Killie though. We ended the year in pretty good fashion, with 4 wins from 5, with the loss coming to Celtic away from home. We're just about hanging on and still somewhat in the conversation for a Top 2 finish, but we're nothing more than outsiders at this point as it will take some doing to gain back those points on The Old Firm. Europa League A solid performance in the group stage, as we pick up 3 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss to Cluj once we'd already qualified. By no means a clean sweep through though as the Danish side gave us problems, with Rok Jug's late goal the only reason for a win at home and away to Salzburg we only bagged the 3 points late on. Top of the group though so happy days. We're rewarded with Norwegian side Rosenborg in the 1st Knockout Round. By no means a certainty that we will beat them but certainly have to be happy with that considering the likes of RB Leipzig, Arsenal and last year's Champions League quarter finalists Schalke all lurking around. PaulHartman71
January ins and outs Out Rok Jug technically left at the tail end of December but whatever. The 26 year old Slovenian striker signed 2 seasons ago and did score 30 goals for us in 2 and a half seasons, but with the signing of the Belgian striker Marcel Aerts who I like more he's not getting the first team football he wants in the prime of his career. We signed him for £1.1M and whilst he could probably be very good in a side that gets the best out of him, I was still surprised to get so much for him, especially from an Icelandic team. He had a lot of suitors actually, with loads of "big" sides from medium nations like FH, Red Star, Rosenborg etc all interested in him and offering similar money. He chose Iceland in the end and managed to double his money in the process as he now gets a crazy £21K a week which we definitely couldn't afford even for a top player. Shane Walker was someone I did not want to lose as he's a good right back, but a host of clubs came in for him and the board accepted the offers as it met a release clause in his contract. He did have English sides interested but in the end he opted to join Celtic which isn't great as it will strengthen them. Greg Hilson was a back-up keeper that wanted first team football, so he was offered out and Dundee United wanted him. Maybe he can help them in their bid to stay in the division. In My record signing is now a right back. I didn't really want to spend that much on a right back as £3.6M is a lot for us but it was the January market which was pretty poor in all honesty and I didn't have a lot of choice, as other targets were either significantly worse or almost just as expensive for someone 4-5 years older with no resell value. He still looks a good player and has the potential to be better, but this could possibly cost us £2-2.5M that we could've spent wiser in the summer. PaulHartman71
On 03/01/2020 at 11:49, juansre said: Thank you @PaulHartman71, i'm enjoying the reading. Keep the great work in Scotland. Any chance to see the tactic screen? Do you always use the 4-2-3-1? More often or not this is what we've lined up with in the average match this season. I will be more cautious in "big" European games and matches with Rangers or especially Celtic, so will switch mentality to cautious and change Sola to automatic, although he is better when attacking. I was sceptical at first about often playing a CM - Attacking and Mezzala - Supporting as typically in this save I have always had a good defensive minded midfielder, but as St Mirren manager our midfield is operating probably at the best it ever has. The only real worry is when we play the bigger sides, but certainly against the middling/lesser sides we usually win the midfield battle and create plenty of chances whilst still defending very well. I have tinkered with the mentalities a lot in last few seasons but this team probably has one of the best balances between being good at defending but also being able to attack teams, keep possession and score goals. In previous seasons in many games we have been good defensively but not so good at going forward. We are of course still somewhat limited tactically as I'm not yet in a position where I can go out and buy players specifically suited to how I may like to play, rather I have to sign the best player available to me and then kind of adapt them into my team/tactic each time. Whereas once you get to the point where you are a Champions League decent side and can spend £10M+ on each player you buy you can be a lot more picky and get a balanced team/squad a lot easier. I have each player set to their own personalised position as I've found in recent seasons that putting them in their best "role" tends to improve results over trying to shoe-horn them all in to one specific tactic. PaulHartman71
Pre-Split Update Scottish Cup An early exit in the Scottish Cup as we an unlucky draw away to the best side in the tournament in the 5th round. Premiership An unbeaten start to the new year, with 2 wins and 3 draws from our first 5 league games of 2065, including a 1-1 draw away to Rangers. Our form really hit it off as we went on though, with an incredible 5 wins from 5 in our next fixtures. We capped off the end of the split with a huge 1-0 win against champions Celtic, before drawing at Aberdeen and then beating St Johnstone. Our good form means the Europa League is already in the bag, with Kilmarnock long behind us in 4th. We've clung on enough, especially with that Celtic win, that going into the split we're 8 points and goal difference away from Celtic. With just 5 games even if we did beat Celtic it's very unlikely that we could pip them to the title as we'd be relying on them to drop a lot of points, but there's just a 6 point gap and goal difference to Rangers. If we can beat Rangers that is certainly a possibility with the form we're in. Europa League We sealed our spot in the last 16 with a smashing performance in Norway in our first leg, with Marcel Aerts even coming away with the match-ball. The return leg was little more than a formality. We couldn't quite get the win, but when you go through 6-2 on aggregate anyway you don't really care! I wasn't too sure what to expect from Lyon. From their competition history page it seems they usually get to the 2nd Knockout Stage and go out, but they did reach the Quarter Final two seasons ago and the Semi Final in 2058. It was a very even first leg, but we defended well and got our reward when Marcel Aerts popped up in the second half to score a huge winner for us. A very nervy return leg in France and Lyon were the slightly better side on the night. They deserved their win in normal time, but we dragged it out to the lottery of penalties and thankfully our boys were in fine form. Marcel Aerts had been subbed off after running himself into the ground, but his understudy Ryan Maguire made no mistake, which set the tone as all 5 of our takers scored. I can't credit our keeper Joe Spearing for being the hero with Lyon's last penalty as their guy blasted it wide to send St Mirren into the Quarter Final for the very first time. We will face Fenerbache in the Quarter Final which will be a huge test for us. Interestingly the tournament itself looks wide open. The ties are: St Mirren vs Fenerbache Club Brugge vs Desna Rangers vs Shakhtar Antalyaspor vs Athletic Bilbao Bilbao aside it is exclusively made up of the top "remaining" nations, with all the other 7 sides coming from the leagues I have loaded in Scotland, Turkey, Belgium and Ukraine. It could well be that Bilbao end up storming it, but it would certainly give an interesting indication as to who is the "best of the rest" if they don't. If us, Antalyaspor, Desna or Club Brugge wind up winning it then it could also mean that Scotland, Turkey, Ukraine or Belgium wind up with 3 sides in the Champions League group stage next season if we don't come 2nd in our respective leagues.
PaulHartman71
End of Season Update Premiership Not the best end to the season and any hope of a Champions League place was cut short. Rangers had to win on the last day to have any chance at the title and bloody hell were they up for it. We weren't great and I'm not going to read too much into the result since we had nothing to play for and were tired after a long season. Despite their 5-0 win against us they could not gain back the title, as Celtic win their 5th in a row. Dundee United and Hearts go down. Europa League A very tight first leg, with Fenerbache getting the better of us in the second half, even getting lucky enough to score from a corner after going down to 10 men ffs Despite a poor first leg result we came back in the second leg and picked up a brilliant result, especially after being 1-0 down on the night and 3-1 down on aggregate at hal-time. We dragged the game to penalties and unfortunately were not as clinical as we were in Round of 16. Hodei Sola came in and far surpassed any expectations I might have had of him. Dario very good in central defence, with Orlando Kwasie an exciting presence on the wing.

PaulHartman71
I'm very pleased to see my old side Vitesse still going strong, not just reaching two consecutive finals, but actually winning it again this season which is great. Marseille make their 2nd final in 4 years. Rangers came incredibly close to winning the thing but were ultimately pipped by Club Brugge in the final. A huge win for the Belgium side. They're the first side from a country outside of England, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Germany to win the competition since the save began. You have to back 56 years to Shakhtar in 2009. Antalyaspor also doing very well to reach a Semi Final, with Desna also doing quite well to get to the Quarters. A real interesting Europa League as usually the latter stages are full of big CL drop-outs or Dutch and Portuguese sides. Impressive showings from Maribor and Malmo to reach the Last 16 too. PaulHartman71
3 in a row for Galatasaray, with an away loss to Besiktas the only thing stopping them from going unbeaten. Genclerbirligi in 3rd, with Antalyaspor not getting the chance to try again in Europe next year. Kayserispor also still missing out. Oud-Heverlee Leuven back with a bang in Belgium, with KRC Genk holding firm to retain their place in the Champions League next season at Standard Liege's expense. Incredibly, Club Brugge don't qualify for the Championship Group, but qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa 9 in a row for Shakhtar, but the real story is the relegation of Karpaty. They were 3rd last season, just 2 seasons ago they came 2nd and made the Champions League. Perhaps the European games were too much for them, but they've incredibly gone down all the same. PaulHartman71
Rangers overcome their disappointment of an early Champions League exit by very nearly going the distance in the Europa. Celtic had a tough group of Man City, Wolfsburg and Monaco. A bit disappointing to lose Hibs and Killie as early as we did, but the sides in Turkey and Ukraine clearly not half bad. PaulHartman71
Celtic's manager got poached by Wolfsburg and they came looking for the most promising manager in the league I can't take the Celtic job but maybe a change of manager can cause them to slip up a bit next season. PaulHartman71
I had a casual browse of Vitesse following their winning of the Champions League and discovered they've increased the stadium to just under 50K, lovely stuff and an even bigger ego boost for Jean-Pierre Cathala the chairman! PaulHartman71
An interesting window that most notably saw long-time solid centre back Dario get snapped up by Bournemouth following a lot of interest from various Premier League sides. In the end I had to cash in as he wanted out. Joe Spearing our goalkeeper of just one solitary season was snapped back to England with Brighton meeting his contract release clause, still not bad to make £2M profit after just 12 months of game time. Long-time rotation home-grown midfield option Dave Pearson also left the club, with Dundee putting in a decent bid for him and he wanted out so I let him go. Michel Martin is a young Belgian keeper signed from Westerlo to replace Spearing and he looks relatively good. He's not English so may not possess the same resell value as many of our last few keepers have, but he's a good talent none the less. Christensson is not immediately as good as Dario, but the young Swede signed from Malmo has good potential and was good value for what we paid. The other incoming was a replacement for our back-up keeper Colin McGregor who left for Livingston. Ultimately the stadium move/loan repayments costing us a bit financially and not making Champions League hamstrings our budget a bit, but we have a good squad and can hopefully keep them together to have a good crack at breaking The Old Firm and going the distance in the Europa this season.
PaulHartman71
Mid-Season Update League Cup We rode our luck in the first round, but comfortably won in the Quarters and Semis to set up another final with Celtic... A disappointing day as Thierry picks up his 4th career final loss in his 5th career final appearance. Not the result we wanted on the day but Celtic just got the better of us. Premiership A quiet start to the season with two consecutive bore draws, but we kicked off a winning run against Hamilton after a last gasp own goal winner, which extended to Aberdeen and Queen of the South. We won 4 more games on the bounce, including a huge win against champions Celtic, which briefly put us top of the table. We recorded our first loss of the season when we went to Rangers and got turned over 2-0. A 2-1 win over Ayr following another late winner came next, with Alex Delgado's goal the only one we scored in a fairly dismal draw with St Johnstone. We were back to winning ways though with 3 wins on the bounce against Ross County, Aberdeen and then Queen of the South again. We beat Hibs 3-0 before losing to Celtic, drawing with Rangers and then Ayr, before ending the year with a win at Motherwell. Celtic are fairly comfortably top following our brief spell at the top, with the champions boasting goal difference and a 6 point advantage should we win our game in hand. We are certainly in the mix for 2nd place though, as we are a point ahead of Rangers with a game in hand. Hamilton are only a point behind too though as they are having a very strong year. Europa League A relatively open group as we got decent Belgian side KRC Genk, FC Utrecht and Leicester City who in recent years have signed from us the likes of Louis Banim, Marcel Mars and they still have Fraser Booth who they took for £11M from us all those years ago. We recorded 4 wins and 2 losses, as we sunk the Dutch side both times, whilst beating Genk and Leicester at home and losing to both away. Thankfully that was enough for us to go through as Leicester also lost in Genk, but could not beat them or Utrecht at home. We will play Feyenoord in the 1st Knockout Round which should be an interesting affair. They're not the side they were in the 2050's that regularly made the latter stages of the Champions League, but they did make the Europa Semi Final two seasons ago and the Quarter Final the year before that, although interestingly in 2061 they shocked everyone by getting eliminated in the qualifiers by Bulgarian side Beroe.
PaulHartman71
Goran Misic leaves and returns to the Serbian league after 6 years service at the club. He'd wanted to leave for at least a season following missing out on Europa squads due to having to meet HG quota etc and we finally got an offer everyone was happy with. Kenny Flynn is a bright young Scottish midfielder who comes in partially due to Misic going, but also because we've had some real injury problems at CAM this season with Nikica Polic and Dean McLoughlin both having real problems. At one point I was playing two CMs and a CB at DM most matches because we simply didn't have the numbers to do anything else.
PaulHartman71
Pre-Split Update Scottish Cup A quarter final exit to Rangers following a replay and a penalty shoot-out. Scottish Premiership We laboured to a draw with Hamilton, before wining 3 on the bounce against St Johnstone, Hamilton and Aberdeen, although we got very lucky to get all 3 points against St Johnstone. We then got very lucky to draw against Killie, again through an 89th minute goal from substitute Sean Tunnicliff. A blip in form as our next 3 games saw two bore draws and a loss courtesy of Celtic, before we beat Ross County and Killie in two consecutive 2-0 wins. We end the normal season with a 1-0 win against Motherwell and Ayr, as well as a 0-0 draw with Rangers away from home, which could be very important in the run in for the Top 2. We're 3 points and goal difference behind Rangers, but with 5 games left including a match at home against them we're still within a shout of finishing 2nd and grabbing a Champions League spot. It will be tough tough and we have to be considered underdogs, although there may be another way for us to get into the Champions League next season... Europa League A 2-0 first leg win at home against Feyenoord put us in good stead for the return leg, especially keeping a clean sheet. A ropey return leg in Rotterdam saw Feyenoord 2-0 up and level on aggregate early into the second half and it looked like the match would go the distance and go to extra-time, but Ryan Maguire, back-up striker and substitute popped up in injury time to score a huge away goal that sent us through. Incredible scenes. I was pretty interested to see Bournemouth this far in the competition and I was unsure on how good they would be. They of course pinched our star centre back Dario in the summer and also have club legend John Ramsay who was so good for me for the first few seasons at the club. It was a close first match, with only an Alex Delgado first half-goal the difference on the night, but keeping a clean sheet was very important. John Ramsay, who is now 33, actually hit the bar with a trademark 20 yard strike late in the second-half. It was another close game in Bournemouth in the opening 25 minutes, but then up stepped Hodei Sola to smash home a 25 yard free-kick to give us a huge away goal and make things very difficult for Bournemouth, who now needed 3 goals on the night to stand any chance of progression. They came at us after half-time as you would expect, but we're a decent counter attacking team so that worked for us as we could pick them off on the break. Two further goals made it 4-0 on aggregate and look a lot more comfortable than the 180 minutes actually were. Standard Liege seem a relatively decent side in Belgium and they knocked us out of the Champions League the one time we did make it there a few seasons back, so I was very wary of them. It looked like it would be another 1-0 first leg for a long time since Kenny Flynn our January signing grabbed an 11th minute opener, but Liege struck a sucker-punch late on to equalise, although we did still get the away goal. I knew Liege were a good team and with only 1 away goal we had to be careful not to let them into the game too much. We defended well and managed to keep a clean-sheet, which puts us through on away goals and to our first ever Europa League Semi Final. Who do we have in the Semi Final? Well, you really couldn't write it. St Mirren and Thierry's first foray in a European Semi sees them facing none other than the old enemy themselves - Genclerbirligi. It's the ultimate grudge match, especially as Genclerbirligi have never won the Europa League, so by knocking them out we can also help prevent them from doing so. It could also grant us Champions League football and prevent them from getting it next season. In some ways knocking Genclerbirligi is more important and exciting a prospect than actually getting to the final and/or winning it Our record against them isn't great, with 3 draws and a loss in the 4 times I've met them since being fired. We did only go out on away goals 2 seasons ago though and we are a much better side since then, so we have to believe we can do it and knock them out. It may end up being an all-Scottish final should we get past them, as the other Semi Final sees Shakhtar versus Celtic, who dropped out of the Champions League at the Group Stage. It would be pretty tragic if we got all that way, with a spot in the Champions League on the line and ended up losing to Celtic of all teams
PaulHartman71
End of Season Update Europa League A pretty decent home performance in a tight game with Genclerbirligi. The main thing was stopping them from getting an away goal and we did that. We weren't helped on the goal front by Marcel Aerts, our starting striker and top scorer getting some knee cartilage damage that put him out for the season just after the pre-split fixtures finished. A gutting result and not the one that I wanted, as Genclerbirligi once again do the dirty on Thierry. We were 2-0 down early on so I had no choice but to go for it and attack them, which showed signs of working, as deputy striker Ryan Maguire grabbed a big away goal to go into half-time 2-1 down, but in a position where a 2nd goal would see us through on the night. We pressed for an equaliser for much of the second half, but it didn't quite come, then we got done on the break in the 73rd minute as Lele got his second goal and their 3rd on the night. After that we had no choice but to just go all out attack and try and pull off a miracle, which unfortunately left us exposed enough for them to grab a 4th not much later to kill the game and the tie dead. We had no choice but to hope Celtic could stop them in the final. Premiership A fantastic run going into the last games of the league season, with Ryan Maguire even getting an expected winner away to Celtic. Hodei Sola equalised against Rangers late on in our home game against them, which meant going into the final game of the season away to Motherwell we were 1 point behind Rangers, with Rangers hosting Celtic on the last day. We had to hope for a win against Motherwell and that Celtic would do all they could to get a win or a draw against their rivals to keep them out of the Champions League spots... Celtic looked for much of the match like they would win it, but Rangers pulled back to a draw late on. Cometh the hour, cometh the man, as deputy striker Ryan Maguire pops up late late on to score a goal that secures us Champions League football. With Celtic keeping their side of the bargain I was left frustrated for much of the match as it looked like we would draw and blow it after all, but huge scenes of jubilation when Maguire poked home to give us that vital goal and 3 points. Happy days. Rangers come so close to the Champions League but just miss out (a lot closer than you could possibly imagine too, as you will see in the next few posts). Ayr go down. No real stand-out mega-stars this season, was more of a team effort with lots of injuries and stuff, although Hodei Sola and David Johnson probably the first names on the team sheet more often than not. PaulHartman71
Nations Remaining (based on nation coefficient ranking) Turkey Scotland Belgium Ukraine Denmark Switzerland Czech Republic (+8) Norway (+2) Romania Austria (-3) Croatia (-3) Sweden (+1) Greece (-2) Slovenia (-2) Bulgaria (-1) Serbia Israel Poland Iceland (+2) Republic of Ireland (-1) Slovakia (-1) Hungary Belarus Finland Wales (+1) Northern Ireland (-1) Czech Republic making huge gains, as most of the top of the table remain the same. Scotland will overtake Turkey next season though. Norway seem quite high up.
PaulHartman71
The clear story here is the incredible run of Rangers who incredibly reached the Champions League final, the first Scottish side to do so in 96 years! A remarkable run that saw them dump out Man City, Chelsea and Man City along the way, before RB Leipzig thankfully beat them in the final. I would've certainly regretted not taking the job when it came up a few years back if the bloody AI had ended up completing Scotland before me ffs The scum win in the final on penalties ffs, you hate to see it! Celtic couldn't quite hold up their end of the bargain, but still pretty mad to see two Scottish sides in European finals in one season. A good showing for Shakhtar to reach a Semi, with Standard Liege doing well to get to the Quarter Final. Malmo and Dynamo Kyiv interesting names in the Last 16, especially given Dynamo have been poor for a decade now in their own country.
PaulHartman71
Fenerbache pip Galatasaray to the title to end their rivals' 3 year run of dominance. Turkey will of course have 3 sides in the Champions League as a result of Genclerbirligi's unfortunate Europa win. Kayserispor and Antalyaspor have returns to Europe this season to and it seems I must've missed Kasimapasa getting relegated last season, which is incredible given their 3 title wins in the 2030's. Anderlecht wind up champions, with KRC Genk joining them in the Champions League. Standard Liege have to settle for Europa, whilst Club Brugge and Oud-Huverlee both miss out on Europa, which theroetically is bad news for the Belgian coefficient as they're both pretty strong sides. 10 in a row for Shakhtar, with a 3rd consecutive 2nd place and Champions League spot for Desna. PaulHartman71
Celtic went out of a CL group with Man United, Valencia and Roma and then did well to reach the Europa final. Rangers obviously did a madness, whilst Kilmarnock and Aberdeen both put in impressive performances to reach the 1st Knockout Round of the Europa only to get knocked out by Turkish opposition. Interestingly 4 of the 5 sides ended up getting knocked out by a Turkish side, although we still overtook Turkey in the rankings. We would have to overachieve as a nation again next season and consistently to overtake Holland or France above of us and also stay above Turkey, but it's certainly possible. You can only laugh at Italy though who have fallen off comically bad to be in 13th behind even Switzerland. Russia you have to say have fallen off a lot to now be below Ukraine, as well as Belgium, Turkey and us given how strong Zenit were when I left them, although in fairness none of the other sides ever really got thaaaat strong in Europe. Italy stuck in a downward spiral as they now have no sides automatically in the group stage of the CL, with both their teams having to start a few rounds back in qualifying. If we could pip Holland for their spot it would be huge as there'd be less pressure on us finishing Top 2 in the league so we could focus on Europe a little bit more than I can at the moment in terms of resting players etc.
PaulHartman71
Celtic manager's been poached again, this time by Sporting Lisbon. Interestingly enough this time they've brought back a 69 year old Kieran Tierney to be manager, who has had a fairly unconventional journeyman-type career as a manager seeing him most recently manager of Steau Bucharest, but also having spent various spells at Aberdeen, Celtic (when Rangers were dominating), FC Salzburg, Malmo and perhaps most successfully at Sporting Lisbon (when they were proper good about 25 years ago). PaulHartman71
The big story of the summer evidently being Hodei Sola's departure for Dortmund. He'd been angling for a new contract on circa £30K per week which we simple cannot afford, so after numerous renewals fell through he asked to be transfer listed and was not short of suitors, with my former sides Portimonense and Vitesse both interested, but he eventually chose Dortmund. A shame to lose him, but £8M profit on two seasons is absolutely not to be sniffed at. The new stadium is still hamstringing us financially, but hopefully the Champions League this season, especially making the Champions League group stages can get us in a much better position. Boris Stankovic is a talented centre mid signed to replace Sola. A good player who we perhaps could not have courted without Champions League football, Stankovic signs on a bosman after refusing to renew his contract for a Roma team that he has never started a game for. He's been nothing more than a back-up player since coming through their youth academy, with loan spells at SPAL and last season Atlanta, but he wanted first team football in the CL and we can give him that. A very good player who I was surprised nobody else was in for. He doesn't have the greatest of injury records, but nothing that should put clubs off too much. Everyone elses loss is our gain. He's joined by another young Serbian in Matija Tufegdzic, who has the upside of counting as HG in Scotland due to Hamilton poaching him at such a young age. He's only been signed as a squad player but it was in a position at right wing where we were a bit short of quality, so he should be a good signing especially with the HG thing. PaulHartman71
A nervy first leg in Holland, but it was ultimately our Dutch winger Orlando Kwasie who scored the only goal of the game to give us a big win and crucial away goal. The new boy Stankovic got on the score-sheet, with Kwasiw grabbing another to make it 3-0 on aggregate and for us to comfortably reach the Playoff in the end. The Belgian upstarts KRC Genk are the only thing between us and our first ever Champions League Group Stage.

PaulHartman71
We got super lucky in the first leg as after two goals were scored early on in the first 10 minutes we then had new boy Stankovic pick up his 2nd yellow juts before half-time and get sent off. We had to defend for our lives in the second half as even just one extra away goal could've been curtains for our Champions League campaign, but luckily we hung on. We did well in Belgium and got an away goal just before half-time to go ahead on the night and in the tie, with Orlando Kwasie getting another important goal early into the second half to put the tie well in our favour. Genk got a goal back but it was not enough for them. We are rewarded with our first ever Champions League group consisting of Manchester City, Marseille and Viktoria Plzen. Marseille and City are both strong sides that regularly reach the latter stages so getting through the group will be a tough ask, but we could well take the huge financial benefits and then drop out to have a crack at the Europa League as I don't think Plzen will bother us too much.
PaulHartman71
Mid-Season Update League Cup A Quarter Final exit to Rangers on penalties, after a last gasp Jonas Lauridsen equaliser took it to extra-time. Scottish Premiership Rangers on the opening day is never the match you want, but what a match it turned out to be. Ryan Maguire popped off the bench to score one of his trademark super sub goals which gave us a huge win to start the season. We took this momentum forwards with us and then won our next 4 games on the bounce. A 0-0 draw with Hearts, before two more wins, this time against Hamilton and Killie. We then picked up our first loss of the season to a good looking Hibs side, before beating Aberdeen 1-0 thanks to a late winner from Kenny Flynn. Two consecutive bore-draws against the Old Firm which are by no means bad results, before back to back wins against Ross County and Queen of the South and then another 0-0 this time with St Johnstone. December was a busy month and probably our worst of the season so far, with 3 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses against Aberdeen and Celtic. Marcel Aerts with a lovely hat-trick against Hibs to put them in their place a bit. As you can see it's very tight at the top of the table. We're top of the league which is great, but in reality Rangers with their games in hand would almost certainly be above us. We're above Hibs by just 1 point, with the side who finished 9th last season playing out of their skins so far. Celtic under Kieran Tierney down in 4th and 3 points behind them, but that doesn't tell the full story, as they had a woeful start to the season that saw them 11 points behind us in October. They seem to be in better form now though and they beat us so they will be chasing us for that other Top 2 spot. Champions League An unbelievable start to our Champions League campaign as we start with a huge upset in Manchester City. City were much the better side in the first half, but they could not score again to kill the game and we gradually managed to get back into it. Olteanu equalised tremendously in the 80th minute, which seemed to shock Moise Kean's side, who then saw super sub Ryan Maguire pounce 2 minutes later to grab another massive goal which gave us the 3 points against the odds. Thanks to a brace from Marcel Aerts we were shockingly almost 2-0 up going into half-time against a very good Marseille side, but they got one on the stroke of half-time and then scored from a penalty in the second half, but we still have to be very happy with a point from a team who reached the final just two seasons ago. Another brace from Marcel Aerts saw us comfortably beat Viktoria Plzen at home. A great performance in the Czech Republic saw us pick up another 3 points in the return match, with a 3rd consecutive brace from Marcel Aerts. Aerts was at it again as he put the icing on the cake of a fantastic defensive performance against City who were fighting for their place in the knockout stages. We held firm to pull off another huge win against the English side. We very nearly got the best of Marseille at the Velodrome, but a late winner from Deco gave us another draw against them. To get through the group at all is huge, but to top the group and do it unbeaten is absolutely unbelievable. A huge performance from the lads. The defence have all been brilliant and Marcel Aerts has been outstanding. With 7 goals in his 9 games he's currently top scorer of the Champions League, which is crazy, as he only has 7 goals in 21 league games We were actually eligible to draw Genclerbirligi in the knockout stages and I was so so up for getting them and finally getting some revenge, but instead we will face Porto in the Round of 16. Porto did win the Champions League as soon as 7 years ago and are regulars in the serious stages of the competition, so it will be a tough ask, but we've played well against Marseille and beaten City twice so who knows!

PaulHartman71
January transfers Out Club captain Nikica Polic, who is 34 and has been nothing more than a back-up player for 2-3 seasons now leaves us to join a German second division side to see out his career. The main departure here was Kenny Flynn to Chelsea, for way less than we should have got for him. He signed last season in January for £1,2M and when I bought him I didn't really anticipate him becoming a first-team player, more of a back-up for HG purposes, so didn't mind too much that his agent insisted on small release clause. However he actually become important player for us but I was unable to negotiate a new deal for him to the point he actively wanted to leave, so when a few clubs met his release clause we had no choice but to sell, which is a bit irritating but we still made a small profit in 12 months on him. In My most expensive signing so far for the club, as we buy young attacking midfield prospect Charlie Ross from Hibs who had a release clause of his own. He looks a good player and the added incentive is that it should weaken Hibs a bit too.

PaulHartman71
Pre-Split Update Scottish Cup A solid run so far. We face Rangers in the Semi Final. Champions League A humbling result against Porto in Portugal. We've been very solid defensively this season it was a big shock to lose by so many. Porto are a very good side, but we have played City and Marseille too and never looked like taking this kind of beating. It was a fairly close game before they got their second goal to be fair, but that second seemed to cause our players to drop their heads and Porto quickly got another 2 more to absolutely kill the tie, especially with us failing to get an away goal. A much better performance in front of our own fans, with Kwasie's goal making it 1-1 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate. A deflating end to our time in the Champions League this season, but I never imagined to get through that group in the first place, so overall it's been a fun ride and great for the bank balance. Scottish Premiership A solid start to the new year with 3 wins from 5, with draws against St Johnstone and Motherwell. A 5-1 demolition of Killie, with Ryan Maguire incredibly grabbing 4 goals, before he got a hat-trick in our next match with Hamilton too. We then lost to Rangers, before beating Aberdeen and securing a huge win against Celtic and a good draw away to Hibs. We go into the pre split in a very solid position thanks to the draw against Hibs and win against Celtic. We've by no means secured a Top 2 finish, but with 6 points and goal difference between us and Celtic and Hibs we're in a good position. Rangers have 4 points on us and goal difference for the title. To be honest the title is not something I've been thinking about for months as Rangers have always had a health lead on us. They're showing why they reached a Champions League final last season for sure. I'm going into it hoping for the best but I'd be really happy if we just secured a Top 2 finish again, although if we could somehow pull off the title that would be amazing too. PaulHartman71
End of Season Update Scottish Cup Hugely impressed to see over 28,000 come to support us, but not the result we wanted on the day. Rangers unfortunately are a better side than us at the minute so no shame to go out to them, but disappointing all the same. Premiership We got off to a terrible start with a loss to Celtic in a big 6 pointer for that all important 2nd place, but we then smashed Hibs and beat Aberdeen to more or less seal 2nd spot. We beat Rangers 1-0 in our penultimate match, although it's worth noting the pressure was off for them because they'd already sealed the title by being 7 points ahead of us at the end of the Aberdeen match. We beat Killie on the final day for good measure. As I said before the table is slightly deceiving in the sense it looks like we got proper close to Rangers, when we weren't thaaat close and they just lost their last 2 games after winning the title, but still a huge cause to celebrate as we come 2nd, finishing 9 points ahead of a lacklustre Celtic side who prior to this season had a 6 year spell of dominance. Rangers are top dogs once more, but we've shown this season we're hot on their tail and ready to take the next step. Our defensive record especially was incredible, no team managed to score more than 2 goals against us all season, as we conceded just 14 goals in 38 games. It's easy to get lost in praising attacking players, but I think the shout-out this year has to go our back 5.
