FM18: Metodo (2-3-2-3) by Erbstein recreation

Recommended Posts

I have started reading a book about Erbstein Ernő's life who was the trainer of the Grande Torino. He used a special Metodo tactic at his early teams (Bari, Nocerina, Cagliari and Lucchese).

What do you think about my formation; is this effective in FM 18? Can the Mezzala's replace the classic IF-s?

Which team/player instructions should I use? Which shape and mentality?

I'm waiting for your replys and suggestions.

Why would mezzalas replace IF when there already is IF as a role in FM?

I personally don't like your setup simply because it's too one-dimensional. I would  try to create more variety with roles and duties. For example:

F9

APsu                                     Watt

CAR      MEZsu

WBatt            HB            IWBde

CD        CD

SKde/su

But roles and duties, as well as team and player instructions, would depend on the strengths and weaknesses of your team, so it's virtually impossible to tell you anything more at the moment.

He said "classic IF" which is a completely different thing to the modern role.

These are from wikipedia, the last one is actually the system he's talking about (which I'd never heard of until this thread)

Metodo.

In that case, I would certainly play with Mezzalas but I would give them both support duties for the sake of balance and to emulate the left and right half backs, I would play IWBs

@Vorangee I wasn't really invested in this until I had to read up a little, but one thing I would say is I personally wouldn't want two Wingers with a F9 and nobody else arriving late in the box (what with the MEZ drifting into the half space) as they'll be trying to bomb down the wing to cross for nobody.

Metodo.

Vittorio Pozzo and Italy won two WC with metodo. :)

Finally I started a career with Lucchese with this formation and tactics:

For the first three friendly it was good, but in the domestic Cup...no:

Some experiences:

- our defense play too wide, but HB move back nicely

- WB's sometimes drop on the Wingers

Now you see the base, so you can advise for me something what you think is useful.

I can give you the kind of advice that I give to most people who face tactical issues:

- try to be more diverse / less one-dimensional with roles (and duties)

- bear in mind that team instructions affect all players (e.g. when you use the "Close down more" TI, it means that your defenders will also press more and therefore tend to get out of position often, which leaves the space behind them that the opposition can exploit)

- don't base your tactic just on your preferred style of football, and rather pay particular attention to relative strengths and weaknesses of your team (maybe your players simply aren't good enough to carry out your tactical ideas/instructions)
