FORSYTH SNUBS NEW DEAL

09062019_forsyth_contract_snub.thumb.png.065d48ba29c5b53860702a037003055d.png

My thoughts: First Jayden Bogle now Craig Forsyth. This is the second player Igor's upset by offering a contract the player was never going to accept. In Fozzy's case Igor's wanting him to take a £2K drop in salary after being promoted. No wonder he rejected it. I know we have a one year extension clause in Fozzy's current contract, and Jayden's existing deal runs to 2022, but I really don't want core players in the squad unhappy about their contract.

DERBY WANT MOUNT AND WILSON BACK FOR ANOTHER SEASON

09062019_wilson_mount_loan_offers.thumb.png.3033fdf39290583e49cf46ca3529b01d.png

My thoughts: This is good news. Mason Mount and Harry Wilson were key players for us last season and I believe they improved a lot. I'm confident they would both be important players for us in the Premier League as well. Hopefully Igor gets these deals done.

MOUNT RETURNS TO DERBY COUNTY FOR ANOTHER SEASON

My thoughts: I've got to take my hat off to Igor and congratulate him on this loan deal. I doubt Mason would leave Chelsea and, even if he wanted to, I doubt we could afford him, but getting him back for another season on loan is brilliant news for the whole football club. I'm excited to work with Mason again and Igor says Mason is full of admiration for me too!

CARSON JOINS BOURNEMOUTH

16062019_carson_sold.thumb.png.8fb880950db25929d37c42735907296f.png

My thoughts: Oh no, Igor, what have you done? I told him I considered Scott to be a Key Player and I was looking forward to him being my goalkeeper this season. Now he's gone. Our backup last season, Kelle Roos, didn't fill me with confidence when he deputised and Henrich Ravas isn't ready yet. Jonathan Mitchell will be back from his loan at League One Shrewsbury Town but I haven't had an opportunity to assess him yet.

I've spoken to Igor and he's told me not to worry as he's going to sign a goalkeeper who's better than Scott Carson. I hope so because the two young goalkeepers I had here last season, Kelle and Henrich, are not ready for the Premier League in my opinion and Jonathan is an unknown right now. I'll have to speak to our goalkeeping coach Mart Poom.

One of the more disappointing things about the sale of Scott Carson is the fact that the board have only increased Igor's transfer budget with 20% of the transfer fee received for Scott. I've spoken to the owner and asked him to increase the transfer revenue made available to Igor but Mel's not for budging on this.

I'm sorry, Igor... I tried.

HOLMES SIGNS FOR AMIENS SC

16062019_holmes_sold.thumb.png.016f6a6037a65790fd81df90544195fd.png

My thoughts: Duane struggled to break into my plans last season with Harry Wilson, Tom Lawrence, Robert Mak, Martyn Waghorn and Mason Bennett ahead of him. We also have Luke Thomas (Coventry City) and Timi Max Elsnik (Northampton Town) returning from loan.

I transfer listed Duane at the end of the season as I didn't think he had the potential to break into the first team picture this season either. Igor didn't agree with me so I'm delighted he's been able to do a deal to offload Duane. I wish Duane all the best for the future.

DERBY SNAP UP WHELAN ON FREE TRANSFER

RamsFanzine: Following his release by Manchester United, Igor Stimac moved quickly to snap up 20-year old MC / DM Callum Whelan on a contract until 30/06/2020. Whelan played 37 times on loan for Port Vale in League Two last season, scoring three goals, with one assist and an average rating of 6.70.

WILSON LOAN CANCELLED

RamsFanzine: Igor Stimac's attempts to bring Harry Wilson back to Derby County have been thwarted as the loan deal has been cancelled. Premier League clubs are only permitted two long-term domestic loans.

16062019_wilson_cancelled.thumb.png.b30ad13f4311a731c8704773447a4f2e.png

My thoughts: I'm hoping this is just a technical glitch. We have Mason Mount on loan for this season, but Blackpool's Rowan Roache remains here until the end of the month as a hangover from last season. Once Roache's loan expires, I'm hoping Igor can go speak to Liverpool and bring Harry back for another season like he did with Mason.

DERBY SIGN QUINA

RamsFanzine: Derby County have splashed the cash signing 19-year old Domingos Quina from Watford for £18.75M.

Quina played three times for Watford in the Premier League last season, scoring one goal with an average rating of 7.10.

17062019_quina.thumb.png.cfd881c8f9b7875bb29f811e26f36f47.png

My thoughts: It's a lot of money for a 19-year old with only three Premier League starts. That said, Domingos did very well in those three matches and I'll take a good look at him in pre-season.

Looks like the summer is starting off right for Igor locking down both Marriott and Lawrence as both of them will definitely play a big role in your battle to stay up next season.

Thanks, @JaytheGreat. I’m very pleased with those two new deals.

Igor hasn’t had the same success with Jayden Bogle and Craig Forsyth though; he’s alienated them both and I now have two unhappy players in the squad.

I've been left without a first team GK so many times by a Director of Football that it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't get a replacement! It's a shame, as other than that Igor seems to have done incredibly well.

That’s my concern as well, @coady.

My Assistant Manager, Stefano Eranio (Judging CA=14, Judging PA=10) rates my goalkeepers as follows: -

  • Kelle Roos - good player for Lg 1 sides, unlikely to improve CA=2.5*, PA=2.5*
  • Henrich Ravas - current Vanarama National level, potential Lg1 CA=1.5*, PA=2.5-3*
  • Jonathan Mitchell - leading player Lg 1 sides, potential decent PL CA=3*, PA=4*
  • Ben Hibbert [regen] - current Vanarama National level CA=1.5*, PA=4-5*

ROSSBACH SNUBS THE RAMS, SIGNS FOR CELTIC

23-year old Norwegian goalkeeper Sondre Rossbach has signed for Celtic from Odds Ballklubb for a fee of £1M.

RamsFanzine understand that Director of Football, Igor Stimac, had agreed a fee with Odds, offered a contract to Rossbach and was convinced he had a deal done and dusted and, if true, this will be a massive blow for Derby County.

27062019_rossbach_snub.thumb.png.bcfeee5d009973f0c867103d2ad01371.png

My thoughts: It looks like Sondre is the goalkeeper Igor thought he was signing to replace Scott Carson so the news that we've lost out to Celtic is very disappointing. Sondre has played very well for Odds in the last two seasons and I'm sure he'll do well in the SPL. Igor has to put this behind him and find me another goalkeeper.

@Stuniverse Ouch both Manchester teams away from home in your first 3 games. I really hope Igor can get a deal done with Bogle, I wouldn't sweat Forsyth as Malone and Lowe can definitely pick up the slack if Forsyth gets sold. I really hope you don't get stranded without a new GK considering Derby's defense isn't great to begin with having to throw Roos or Mitchell out there would be disastrous. Quina is an interesting signing, 18.5 mil for a position that isn't really struggling and only having 3 Premier League starts. On the other is attributes are very good for a 19 year old.

Welcome to the Premier League Derby County!

Yes, @JaytheGreat, the goalkeeper situation is a big concern and the latest news is that the Carson replacement Igor had lined up, Sondre Rossbach, has snubbed us for Celtic.

I asked Igor to talk to Bogle again but, at the moment, Bogle is refusing to discuss a new deal. He's currently on £3.8K a week until 30/06/2022.

FOURTEEN RELEASED BY DERBY COUNTY

RamsFanzine: Igor Stimac has issued Derby County's retained player list, confirming the release of 14 players who were out of contract this summer.

The highest profile players released are Alex Pearce, David Nugent, Jacob Butterfield, Nick Blackman and Marcus Olsson.

The loan deals of Andy King (Leicester City), Harry Wilson (Liverpool), Mason Mount (Chelsea), Robert Mak (Zenit) and Rowan Roache (Blackpool) have all expired and the players have returned to their parent clubs.

Mason Mount has since rejoined for the Rams on loan for this season and Igor Stimac is thought to be in talks with Liverpool about bringing Harry Wilson back to Pride Park.

DERBY SIGN AARONS ON FIVE YEAR DEAL

RamsFanzine: A clearly delighted Igor Stimac announced today that Norwich City's right-back Max Aarons had signed for Derby County for £10.5M until the summer of 2024.

19-year old Aarons played 36 times for the Canaries in the Championship last season, scoring one goal, with four assists and an average rating of 6.92.

08072019_aarons_signs.thumb.png.2f7311758316c3a4be9021d568d35c6d.png

08072019_aarons.thumb.png.e2157ad4a0bf35c978daad4d9b1492d9.png

My thoughts: Well, to be fair to Igor, I can't argue the quality and potential of Max Aarons but, as he plays right-back, it creates a real headache for me as he'll be in direct competition with our own highly talented young right-back Jayden Bogle.

This signing also has the potential to unsettle the squad. As well as the obvious threat to young Jayden, Andre Wisdom has been to see me with concerns for his own place in the squad. I was honest with Andre that competition for places was healthy and he'd need to prove himself in training, but Andre wasn't happy with that, told me he didn't think I'd pick him, and before I knew it I had half a dozen players, including young Jayden, telling me I'd treated Andre unfairly. I managed to talk everybody round for the time being but I'm not sure how long that will last.

WILSON BACK AT DERBY ON SEASON LONG LOAN

10072019_wilson.thumb.png.63848c8cd29271e890b6794d86bb2af6.png

My thoughts: I'm thrilled that Harry Wilson is rejoining us for another season long loan. Harry was the Championship’s second highest goal scorer with 21 goals last season, behind our own Jack Marriott with 38, but Harry was more than just his goals and free-kicks and was instrumental in our promotion push.

This one took a long time to get over the line. There were technical issues that caused the deal to be cancelled at one point, but Igor was resilient and patient, and once Liverpool chose not to register Harry, he jumped at the chance to return to Derby on loan for another season.

FORMER RED DEVIL SIGNS FOR DERBY

RamsFanzine: Igor Stimac has signed 20-year old free agent DJ Buffonge for Derby County until the summer of 2020. Buffonge who has yet to make his professional debut, was released by Manchester United this summer.

12072019_buffonge_signs.thumb.png.76b0e80867bc7368ef3620965ec8effe.png

12072019_buffonge.thumb.png.68f1740aa6ca60912387b6fe323a52a4.png

My thoughts: DJ will go into our U23 squad and we'll see how he develops. At first glance in training he's some way behind the youngsters we have here already who are close to breaking into the  first team squad. I hope DJ proves me wrong, but right now my view is he has a lot to do to get to a place where I'll consider him for the first team squad.

DAVIES JOINS DERBY

RamsFanzine: Igopr Stimac has announced the free agent signing of 20-year old left-back Jordan Davies until the summer of 2020.

Davies, who made 14 appearances on loan to Bangor City during the 2016/17 season was released by Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer having failed to break into their first team squad.

My thoughts: Jordan is another one for the U23s. To be honest, I'm not sure he has the potential we're looking for but we'll see how he gets on and develops under Head of Youth Development Darren Wassall in the U23 squad.

YOUNG RAMS RETAIN STEVE BLOOMER TROPHY

RamsFanzine: A very young Derby County team recovered from the set-back of conceding an early goal to retain the Steve Bloomer Trophy with a 2-1 victory over Real Union at Stadium Gal. The Rams goal scorers were Timi Max Elsnik in the first-half and Jayden Bogle with a late penalty.

RAMS FINALLY REPLACE CARSON

RamsFanzine: Igor Stimac has confirmed the loan signing of 34-year old Greek international goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis fom Serie A side Napoli. Karnezis joined Napoli ahead of the 2018/19 season but has yet to make a league appearance for them and hadn't been registered for this season's Serie A campaign. A former Watford player, Karnezis enjoyed his best spell so far playing for Serie A Udinese during the 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons.

Stimac will be extremely relieved at finally landing a goalkeeper. After selling last season's #1 Scott Carson to Bournemouth, Stimac thought he'd replaced him with Sondre Rossbach (Odds) only for Rossbach to snub the Rams and sign for Celtic in the SPL.

RamsFanzine understand that Stimac was keen on bringing in Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald on loan but was unable to agree the finances and the deal fell through.

19072019_karnezis_history.thumb.png.90c1f9664cae6b01e87d9b046a3bd712.png

My thoughts: Igor's done it. He's signed a goalkeeper and my coaching staff tell me he's the best goalkeeper at the club but he's not of the same calibre as Scott Carson and I'd much rather Scott was still here. But Scott isn't, Igor's sold him, and I need to get over that.

To be fair to Orestis, he hasn't played much football over the last couple of seasons and he's looking forward to playing for us. I'll get our goalkeeping coach, Mart Poom, working with him and we'll see what level we can get him to.

Orestis doesn't speak English which is far from ideal, and he's on loan which means we don't have a permanent #1 at the club, something I much prefer, but it is what it is and we have to make the most of it.

BOGLE SIGNS NEW THREE YEAR CONTRACT

RamsFanzine: Igor Stimac announced after the Sevilla match that 18-year old right-back Jayden Bogle had signed a new contract, keeping him at Derby County until the summer of 2022.

This will be a relief to all parties after contract discussions earlier in the season broke down and appeared from the outside to have created animosity between Stimac and Bogle.

Bogle's contract is reported to contain a £16M release clause that expires on 31 January 2021 and a £8M relegation release clause.

21072019_bogle_rel_clauses.thumb.png.36b22031d1047fff765578cd987d1a39.png

My thoughts: I'm delighted that Igor has been able to agree a new deal with Jayden as it looked like it wasn't going to happen a few weeks ago. For an 18-year old, Jayden was unbelievable last season and improved a hell of a lot. I look forward to working with him and seeing how much further he can go.

Of course, with the signing of Max Aarons (who we haven't worked with yet because he's away with the England U19s), Igor has given me a real headache as we have two fantastic young prospects at right-back and it's going to be difficult to keep them both happy this season.

I'd say it's a mixed bag for Igor so far this offseason, he resigned Bogle and brought back Mount and Wilson but while his transfers have plenty of potential, that money could have been better spent else where. Although the preseason looks somewhat promising and @Stuniverse has proven to be a top manager so I'll go out on a limb and say Derby stays up this year.

Thanks for the vote of confidence @JaytheGreat.

I understand where you’re coming from as Mason Mount and Domingos Quina are very similar. And what am I meant to do at right-back with both Jayden Bogle and Max Aarons? Not to mention Andre Wisdom whinging before the season starts that he doesn’t believe I’m going to pick him and stirring up unrest in some of the squad.

From what Igor tells me he hasn’t finished yet although money is tight because the Board wouldn’t let me send Justin Walker on a coaching course due to the club’s financial position.

DERBY COUNTY LOAN ALFRED N'DIAYE

RamsFanzine: Igor Stimac has confirmed the loan signing of 29-year old defensive midfielder Alfred N'Diaye from Villarreal until the end of the season.

N'Diaye joined Villarreal from Real Betis in the summer of 2016 and made seven appearances for Villarreal in La Liga. Since then, N'Diaye has had loan spells at Hull City, Wolves and Malaga. N'Diaye is contracted to Vllarreal until the summer of 2021, although his contract does include a £14.25 minimum fee release clause.

Question: Does anybody know if there’s a limit on loans from foreign clubs in the Premier League or any restrictions on how many can be included in a match day squad?

Looking at the recent deals Igor’s done, and the ones he’s still working on, that appears to be the market my Director of Football is working in at the moment, at least for this transfer window.

I’ve checked the EPL rules in game and can see there’s a domestic limit on long-term loans of four per season, with only two at any one time, so we’re up to that limit with Mason Mount and Harry Wilson (although if recalled,, we could loan a domestic replacement).

But I can’t see any mention of a limit or restrictions on foreign loans.

If anybody knows, I’d welcome a heads-up, otherwise I guess I’ll find out when I select the team for our opening EFL fixture away to Man Utd at Old Trafford.

There's no limit on foreign loan signings in the PL at present, only domestic ones. I remember that caused a bit of controversy with Watford a couple of years back, as the owners kept loaning players between the clubs they owned. Neil Warnock complained about it this year as well, as he stated he could loan some young English players and offer them Premier League football, but was forced to get players from abroad instead due to the current domestic limits.

Also, N'Diaye looks a fantastic signing. If Igor can find a few more of them, you'll be absolutely fine this year.

Thanks @coady I remember the Watford situation with Udinese and Granada (I think) and assumed they’d closed that loophole. Obviously not.

I won’t worry about these foreign loans Igor’s negotiating then.

Yes, I like the look of N’Diaye too.

Pre-match v Borussia Monchengladbach (a) Pre-season

RamsFanzine: The transfer window closes at 5.00 pm on Thursday. Can we expect any more business from Derby?

Stuniverse: Igor's still working to bring in a couple more new faces if he can, although our finances are quite tight now. There's also a number of players we'd like to move out, either permanently or on loan to aid their development.

RamsFanzine: Are you happy with the work Igor's done this window?

Stuniverse: Well Igor tells me he's not done yet but, overall, yes I am happy. Igor got Mason Mount and Harry Wilson back on loan and that's a massive lift to everybody around here. Igor's also brought in Orestis Karnezis, Max Aaarons, Domingos Quina and Alfred N'Diaye who will all be staking a claim as first team regulars. We've also added to the depth of our U23 squad. If I'm being honest, I would've preferred to keep Scott Carson at the club but Igor thought he'd got the deal for Sondre Rossbach in the bag so when he signed for Celtic that was disappointing.

Match Preview

RamsFanzine: Away to Borussia Monchengladbach is a difficult fixture to end your pre-season, isn't it?

Stuniverse: Yes, it is. That's the point. Our away fixtures this season won't come much more difficult than our opening match against Manchester United at Old Trafford and the following away fixture  against Manchester City at The City of Manchester Stadium.

RamsFanzine: How do think your pre-season has gone?

Stuniverse: We still have the match today to play, but I'm very happy with how things have gone. We've won two pieces of silverware with the Steve Bloomer Trophy and the MLS All-stars cup [laughs]. Seriously though we've had some tough matches, including Sevilla and Inter and we've only lost one match. I thought we gave as good as we got against Inter and were unlucky not to win.

It's not been easy with new players arriving and others leaving, and Igor's still working on bringing a couple more in, but the squad is starting to bond and they're working hard on the training ground. We're all looking forward to getting our Premier League season underway.

RamsFanzine: Do you have any injury concerns?

Stuniverse: Only one. Harry Wilson strained his calf last time out against the MLS All-stars and he'll be out for 2-3 weeks. Other than Harry, everybody else is fit and available or selection.

Team Selection

RamsFanzine: This is your last pre-season match before the Premier League starts. How close to your starting line-up for the Manchester United game is your starting 11 tonight?

Stuniverse: I shouldn't read too much into the 11 as we plan to give everybody some playing today. I think it's safe to say that the 23 in the squad today are all in contention for our visit to Old Trafford.

Post-match: Borussia Monchengladbach (1) 1-1 (0) Derby County

Stuniverse: I thought we played very well today and the players look sharp and raring to go for the new season. We've been working on more of a balance between defence and attack than we had last season and, although it's early days, I'm happy with how we're shaping up. At the back we look more resilient and solid than we did in the Championship and we're still creating plenty of chances. We had some good chances to equalise today before a fabulous strike from Domingos Quina drew us level.

RamsFanzine: That's it. Your pre-season is all done. Next match Manchester United away in the Premier League. All the best.

Stuniverse: Thank you. It's going to be a challenge, for sure, but we can promise all Rams fans we're going to give it our best shot.
