Interesting idea man! I was actually thinking of doing this in Asia but that would lead to mostly South Korean and Saudi affairs. Kinda boring if you ask me. Will be following.

I can’t believe that I ever trusted her.

3 days before our wedding and…this?!  I mean..on one level, I get it.  Things have been hard lately.  And I haven’t been the most considerate fiancé (or lover)…even I have to admit that it has been all about me.  My struggles.  My depression.  My inadequacies.

The struggle to get a paying job in football wasn’t helping.  Do you know how many late-20-somethings here want to chase the dream, in this economy, after their initial professional aspirations fell by the wayside?  Too many.

But, even then…did she have to get off with my Best Man?!  And then all five Groomsmen, all at the same time?!  Best mates...as if.  Thanks for being there for me when it mattered, yeah?!

With friends like these, the thought of getting away from it all was welcome, to say the least.  So off to the airport I went…  But, where to go?  As far away as possible.  To keep anyone from finding me easily, I decided to pick at random.

Greece?  Not random enough.  Way too predictable.  Thailand?  Bangkok would eat me alive in this state.  But...yes...that's the ticket.  No one would think to look for me there...

First class?  Why not.  I've no intention of paying the credit card bill, see -- it is in both of our names.  Enjoy paying for my "sabbatical," princess...

One week later and I’ve settled into something of a routine.  A quiet life.  Freedom.  Late nights, mixing with the locals.  Some casual bravado about my past, carefree in a city where I’m utterly anonymous.

But in almost every city in the world, someone knows football.  And someone here knew my name.  And seemed to think he recognized me, if he squinted hard enough.

Well, not my name.  His name.  A name we share.

It isn’t my fault that my parents gave me this name.

But it probably is my fault that after a few drunken boasts, and a case of mistaken identity thanks to my accent…that somehow I find myself back in football sooner than I expected.

In the most unlikely of places.

Welcome to Brendan, Obuasi.

Ashanti Gold - December 2018

I've never been this hungover in my life.  But we've got training in 20 minutes.

And I've got nothing but my wits (such as they are) and a battered copy of Telleus' Tactical Teachings: Tomorrow's Football Today to guide me.  It's only the 2nd edition, too.  From what I've heard, the 3rd has some tremendously insightful innovations...but I haven't been able to find one this morning.  Maybe another day.

Because there are 3 envelopes in my kitbag, containing the names of 3 people who will let the club down this year.  To be fair, it's my name written on the slips inside of all three envelopes.

Why?  Because I'm a total fraud.  Working in a foreign land.  In a field where my only meaningful qualification is the name I share with a man I've never met.

I the Scottish Brendan Rodgers, I am.

As you will have noticed, we skipped ahead 1.5 years to create a unique playing environment.  Things haven't changed much as of December 2018...Jupp Heynckes' Bayern Munich won the 2017/18 European Champions League.

The 2017 CAF Champions League was won by ES Tunis, with Wits claiming the 2018 title, in their first ever final.  The South African dominance was also seen in the CAF Confederations Cup (the African equivalent of the Europa League), where SuperSport United and Cape Town City claimed the 2017 and 2018 titles, respectively.

Going forward, I will post annual European updates every June, with the CAF Champions League covered as well.  If people are interested, I will track eligible teams in the same way I was doing it on my European Nearly Men save.

By way of background, the "stolen identity" aspect of this thread has its origins in real life:

“Then there was the Briton, Jeff Butler who came to the conclusion that in Africa, a voice turned hoarse with shouting, a gruff Yorkshire manner and an impression that you had grown up in the tough, admired world of English professional football could take you a long way.  This Jeff Butler had achieved so highly with Al Ahly and Kaizer Chiefs that, when South Africa looked for its first national coach after the end of apartheid, they turned to him.  Only then did it emerge that he had been travelling around the continent claiming as his own the English playing career of another man, a former player with Norwich City also named Jeff Butler, who was surprised to hear of this ingenious piece of identity-theft when contacted at his home in East Anglia.”

Feet of the Chameleon, Ian Hawkey

(I cannot recommend this book highly enough.)

Russia 2018; World Cup Review

Uhh...so...I nearly forgot to post up this review.  Finally getting close to the first games in Ghana and I realized I needed to look back.  Jorge Sampaoli's Argentina claimed the title after a wild 4-3 win over Julen Lopetegui's Spain.

Ok...time to press on, as I'm hopeful we'll get to the first matches today...

Nervous...can't let the lads see it...why did I wear my three-piece suit?  I look like such an amateur, especially in this heat..the cravat was a bit much, even I have to admit..

I've prayed for a strong start.  This will do, lads.  This will do.

Ashanti Gold - March 2019

10 matches in a month...this fixture congestion is surreal.  But we've struggled through, even with the departure of several senior players...and our most promising young forward ****ing off to Anderlecht for $145k, his release clause.  The older players leaving has been good, because the youth are less likely to question my "methods," cribbed from Telleus' guide.

My goal is simple.  Build up a strong, young side with the depth to handle whatever departures to Europe may come.  A side to represent, at first, Ghana...then West Africa...then the Continent.  A little ambition never hurt anyone, did it?

European Review - June 2019

Given how early it is in the save, there are very few shocks thus far in Europe.  Well, beyond the fact that United weren't complete crap under Mourinho...that's shocking, in every sense of the term.

Carlo Ancelotti's Manchester City claimed their first Champions League title with a 1-nil win over Ernesto Valverde's Barcelona

Diego Simeone's Atletico claimed the title in La Liga, while Mourinho's United successfully defended their title (thanks to a City draw at West Brom on matchday 37).  Maurizio Sarri's Napoli claimed the Serie A title, with Pep the Bald's Juventus a distant 4th.  Heiko Herrlich's Leverkusen did the heretofore-impossible, and won the Bundesliga.  Unai Emery's PSG did PSG things, reclaiming their title from Bruno Genesio's Monaco (yes, in this world, Monaco have been spared the pain of Theirry Henry's reign of craptastic football).  And, in Belgium, Ivan Leko's Club Brugge claimed their first in-game title.

And, finally, the grandeur of the Europa League...a European quarterfinal between Burnley and Olympiacos?!  Yes, please.  In the end, however, Pochettino and his stylish stubble saw Spurs survive a nervy penalty shootout over Leverkusen.

Ashanti Gold - June 2019

Finally, a chance to catch our breath.  The Cup of Nations kicks off in 5 days' time, so we have several weeks' rest.  We've 7 matches to play over the next 4 months... Saying that out loud feels ridiculous, but the reality is that we need reinforcements.  I want two full XIs that can be rotated, as when the matches are on...they flow like sweet red wine.  There are more than enough minutes to go around, unless you're Dauda and too much of a **** to know better.  If I could, I'd pack him off to Yemen on a scouting trip...but we can't afford to send him off to Yemen indefinitely...we can't even afford to send him there for the weekend.  Not that we're broke.  Far from it.  We've got $1.35M in the bank, and are $322k in the black on the year thus far...but the margins are thin.  Thinner than I expected.  We need to capitalize on our player sales...and that $7k sitting in the transfer kitty...while it may not look like much, it may be enough to pick someone out of relative obscurity.

Ashanti Gold - 2019 Season Review

The champagne may **** warm, but tastes like nothing else.  The taste of victory.  Champions of Ghana, with one foot in the Champions League next year.

There is much work to be done.  Do we stick with the current tactics, or twist and shake things up a bit?!  How do we spend this $700k transfer kitty that the Board have been kind enough to grant us?!

I'm not confident enough to start tweaking Telleus' tactics...but I know that the path forward is youth...and speed.  I'm pretty sure it was Winston Churchill, that sexy mother****er, who first said that "speed kills...hot, nasty, bad*** speed."  Or something like that.  I recall reading it somewhere.

Goals for 2020: Defend our league title.  Continue building up the squad.  Not embarrass ourselves in the CAF Champions League.

Africa Review - November2019

Ok...let's see how this is going to work.  A quick look around Africa to see how the other active domestic leagues are going.  I am not currently planning to do a spreadsheet tracking each eligible team, mainly because many nations play within a calendar year, while others split the season between 2 calendar years.

Not much commentary tonight, other than to say that I REALLY want Panthère du Ndé from Cameroon or Onze Créateurs from Mali to become eligible.

Our first trip abroad for the Champions League, and it is no sure thing.  A rematch of the 1997 final.  Those Casablancan C***s had best be ready for a scrap.

The Board suggested that we drive, to save money given that our schedule would permit it.

I told them to go **** themselves.

They assumed I was joking.

I wasn't.

But after a good laugh at the "funny Irishman" they decided to splurge for flights.

One of the most frustrating matches of my career in Casablanca...

Ok, I realize I'm being melodramatic.  But it was frustrating...  Regardless of the fact that my career is just...  You know what, nevermind.

It was epic.  But we're still out of the Champions League.

Actually, these are the teams that played an AFC Champions League final, but did not win:

Australia: Adelaide United

China: Dalian Shide (extinct, merged into Dalian Yifang)

Iran: Sepahan; Zob Ahan; Persopolis

Iraq: Al-Shorta; Al-Rasheed (extinct, all assets transfered to Al-Khark)

Japan: Yokohama F. Marinos

Malaysia: FA Selangor

Oman: Oman Club

Qatar: Al-Arabi

Saudi-Arabia: Al-Ahly; Al-Shabab FC; Al-Nassr

South-Korea: FC Seoul; Yangzee FC (extinct)

Syria: Al-Karamah

Thailand: Police Tero

UAE: Shabab Al-Ahli

So only 2 from South-Korea and 3 from Saudi-Arabia.

Tough luck going out that way. I've only gone to Ghana once in my FM career, so I don't know the landscape very well. It's hard to measure your club up against the African competition. You may have a nasty surprise coming the first time you go deep in the CAF Champions League...

That's exactly my fear. We're currently the 19th ranked league in Africa, and my squad is ridiculously young. I have very little sense for how good we are in comparison with established continental forces.

One thing for certain - domestically, our ridiculously large pitch gives us a strategic advantage; against Raja Casablanca, however, we did not look good on it. We were much more effective on their ground. It does make sense to me, in that I'm off the belief that a larger pitch tends to benefit the more skilled/astute side... But 180 minutes is far too small a sample size to tell.

I think domestic dominance is on the horizon in the next year or two, but it could take a while to conquer the continent.

Ashanti Gold - June 2020

I originally thought that it would take another year (or more) to establish ourselves as the dominant domestic side.  But, here we are.

Top of the table.  11 points clear.  A 35-match unbeaten streak.  A young, hungry squad, itching for a chance at continental football.  Although, maybe that's the infectious rash going around...we really need to get that under control.

European Review - 2019/20

Things are going well in Africa...but let's take a peek at Europe...

Auntie Maureen's Manchester United claimed the Champions League title with a 2-nil win over Unai Emery's Bayern Munich. Harry Kane claimed 6 goals in the tournament...surely, that's an error.

Harry did better in the league, however, with 20 goals powering United to a 2nd place finish, behind Ancelotti's Manchester City.  Antonio Conte's Real Madrid took home La Liga with 98 points, 3 more than the Serie A winners, Gennaro Gattuso's MilanBayern did their usual thing in the Bundesliga, giving Emery something to comfort himself with.  Luis Enrique's PSG did more PSG things.

In the Europa Leauge, Tayfun Korkut's Stuttgart claimed the title, beating Luciano Spaletti's Inter 2-1 in the final.

13 Host Nations 2020; European Championship Review

#13HostNations2020 is pretty much the worst hashtag since #EquimagicAfterDark.  At least this time England lost.

Fernando Santos' Portugal took home the title over Alan Pardew and his merry men on penalties.  The best part, though?  urCristiano being subbed off in the 56th minute...

Ashanti Gold - July 2020

Unbeaten.  Setting League records for number of wins, points and goals scored.  And we've got a Cup final to play.

It is true.  We are the ones we have been waiting for.

This could be the most bizarre loan I've ever seen.  An Austrian/Croatian national, with 11 U21 caps, on loan to a mid-tier side in Mali...?!

I'm guessing that the Salzburg manager's missus was somehow involved...

Our first domestic loss of the season...and I can hardly believe my eyes.  In my post-match rage, I kicked a boot across the room and hit Soumah square in the eye.  The kid was already angry at me for rejecting an offer from Porto...and I worry that this may be the straw that breaks the camel's back.  The kiwi farmers at Anderlecht are in for him, too.  But I've been clear.  $3M in clauses or he goes nowhere.

Ashanti Gold - 2020 Season Review

A massive year, domestically.  The brief taste of continental football turned bitter, however, having fallen at the first hurdle.

We will be ready next year, as I've instituted a full Telleusian diet, grapefruit featuring heavily.  **** the expense.  We need every edge we can get.

Goals for 2021: Make a run in the Champions League.  Continue our domestic dominance.

Africa Review - December 2020

Alright, alright, alright...some interesting results here, as teams that I've long assumed to be "favorites" are struggling.  We really need to make some waves in the Champions League this year.

And, hey, check out that Confederation Cup final -- Kano Pillars v. TP Mazembe.  Quality!

Our first big sale.  In real life, Emmanuel Toku is a youth national team player with a big future...in-game, he's off to Belgium.  And I can't begrudge him the move.

Fortunately, we signed two guys effective at the end of 2020 who can step into the XI -- Ndao and Adda.

Another move...and the squad is ticked at me...when they were ticked at me for not letting him move on, just a few weeks ago.

With Mohammed moving on, Antwi will step into the XI, with Helegbe and Kevyn as backups.
