What other sports could work well with FM's gameplay style and aethsetics?

Out of the Park Baseball is a superb and increasingly popular sports sim for baseball. And in many ways, that sport is better suited to be simulated than football is. I've played it more than FM in recent years.

Whats the difference betwen this and the MLB manager the same company makes?

ah ok. thanks. i'm iinitrigued!!

There are lots of other sports sims out there, but I think OOTP is the only one of comparative quality to FM. And in some ways it's better: it's much more flexible in terms of what the player can edit or turn on or off when setting up a save, and it also can reverse-engineer CA/PA based on historical stats, which means you can start a save at any point in professional history, and it will adjust the rules, the players, etc. to reflect the state of the world at that moment. Imagine starting in 1930 and becoming Uruguay manager, for example, or beginning your Man Utd save in 1986 and seeing if you can do better than Ferguson. FM will never be able to do this because football doesn't have the same discrete statistical detail that baseball does.

Not to mention that baseball (at least with in the game world of OOTP, which primarily focuses on the MLB and its minor affiliates) is a much, much "smaller" sport than football (in terms of professional players and teams and nation playing at and/or having leagues at a higher level. In football there's several leagues whose reputation within the sport equals the MLB in baseball (if you disregard the fact that MLB is the "only" major league in the world). The footballing world is far, far bigger than the baseball world, so the databases would have to be enormous compared to the historic DBs of OOTP (and FHM, OOTP's hockey equivalent - Franchise Hockey Manager, built upon OOTP).

Also, I've played FHM a bit (not so much OOTP), and for me, the "feeling" of the game isn't there in the same way as when I play FM.

That said, if you took all the engines and graphics and everything from FM, and "converted" it to hockey, that would be an amazing game. Probably for sports like handball, rugby, basketball, and even baseball and gridiron football (NFL/CFL-style) as well. I'd love it, at least.

Cricket is absolutely made for it. A game for stats obsessives, tactics are all about balance between types of players and setting up field positions, matches are understood through score and stat updates with a relatively small number of replays, and the match engine and commentary doesn't need to be very sophisticated to understand whether your plan is working. And you've got three different formats of the game, and both internationals and club games with funky transfer rules to work with

There's Cricket Coach, a worthy indy effort that bears more than a passing resemblance to FM (or more specifically 2D match engine era FM), though I'd have preferred to have more attributes to work with

As a fan of rugby union (or at least the international side of it), I would love to see a rugby union management title in the PC gaming market that is at least adequate. I'm not surprised there isn't, though, considering that the sport is arguably far more complicated than football. If you think the FM match engine has flaws, imagine the flak SI would get if they tried their hand at union.

Funnily i was randomly thinking this a few weeks ago, Cricket is my fab sport so a management simulation would be great... But i couldnt get my head round how i would watch the tests (what highlight mode?)

Full match mode for the purist

Imagine the bugs in the ME... Game breaking tactics 0-10 off 1.4 overs

I think basketball could be interesting, especially with recent emphasis on metrics and advanced stats that have really changed the NBA. Coaching side of the game would be pretty deep selecting offensive style (high/low pace? pick and roll? post-up? iso?) and defensive strategy (aggressive switch? conservative defense?), identifying player archetypes and selecting specialist roles (3&D, point forward, stretch four etc etc). Of course the GM aspect would also be a key with player signings, trades and prospect scouting at college level or worldwide. Staff members would include assistant coaches, player development coaches, scouts, video analysts, trainers etc. Draft, summer league, training camp plus the developmental G-league would also add to the experience. Basically MyGM mode of NBA 2K, just with FM depth!

You might actually like the Cricket Coach game then.

You get to choose bowler and have the option to change bowling plan every over. IIRC the replays are for boundaries, chances and wickets but maybe you can watch every ball if you want, though I doubt there's a "watch bowler stroll back to his mark whilst imagining Geoffrey Boycott providing entertainment by wittering on about his nan's stick of rhubarb" mode

tbh it's probably too simple a game to break that badly, although I'm not sure repeated yorkers at test openers would actually work as well as it did when I tried it. Also pretty sure that nobody wins one day internationals by posting ~250 any more, but then it was developed by an Englishman in 2014...

Now rugby's a game I like which I suspect would be relatively easy to write a plausible-looking match engine for but surprisingly dull to play as a management simulator (best side wins most games, instead of real life training moves the tactics the game can actually replicate are going to be pretty basic box ticking stuff like "kick for touch often" and "try more rolling mauls", you're soon going to learn whether forward or back play is more overpowered in game, and if it lets you win by playing players out of their specialised positions it's broken)

Ive said many times in the past that I would love a football manager style boxing promoter game.

There is some on the market but nothing with the sort of depth FM has or even close to it.

Title bout is probably the most in depth and also happens to be from the Out of the park brand mentioned above for baseball, unfortunately they don't put any real effort into it as baseball Is their priority.

Alternatively Greydog software who make Total Extreme Wrestling and World of Mixed Martial Arts, would be good candidates but again they aren't interested as I think the developer has no interest in boxing as hes more MMA orientated

Maybe some form of race game, perhaps not even with vehicles?

Maybe some sort of Olympic games where you manage a country's various sports, with training, preparation and competition for all of them: The Olympics Manager (or whatever it is in Greek).

I also thought of maybe some kind of RPG where you build guilds or mercenary bands and have the "players" slowly turn from lowly grunts to legendary heroes within the world or faction and is hated by the others who may try to assassinate them and etc with various classes and duties haha.

Some sort of Quidditch Manager maybe could work, with spells learned being like PPMs and such.

I would say baseball but OOTP has that on lockdown. The customization options are almost unlimited. Online leagues are a blast. I currently run a daily-sim semi-fictional league with 32 members. PM me if you want details.

Aside from my shameless plug, many ootp players are not huge baseball fans in real life but the simulation is that good.

Motorsport Manager is worth a look, seems to have some FM influence in it, and plays really nicely.

For me, it would be a music management sim with FM's stylings. Rob Cooper gave a taste of the sort of depth that could be achieved before he joined SI with his Chart Wars series, and there still hasn't really been any major dominant game in that genre that's really let you sink your teeth into it. If someone could nudge him to get on with a sequel, I'd much appreciate it.
