By default, yes.  However, if you're playing on a Windows PC you have the option to remove that restriction.  It just means that the save game cannot then be played on another platform (as the save games are cross-platform compatible if the restrictions are kept in place).

Gotcha

Thanks Smurf, any concerns in getting the 128 GB version of the Surface Pro? That one is actually the one I was thinking of getting.

128gb is quite a small amount of storage. Not sure if that can be expanded.

I think it can take an SD card - but something you should check out.

On the restrictions - I asked in the FMT Forum first if running it on Windows would remove these restrictions, otherwise I would have gotten an iPad :)

I wouldn't have known.

Thanks!

Would that be small amount of storage for FM or you mean in general? I am not looking to store a lot on it, just play FM really and store important documents as I only have a work laptop. If it impacts FM in any way though I would be happy to upgrade to 256GB :)

Evening all, hope you're well. Welcome back, Smurf :)

I'm looking to invest in a new laptop ready for FM21. Budget of £600-£700. Will only be used for FM, Remote Desktop to a work server and general browsing.

I'd quite like to get it from Argos because I have £200ish worth of vouchers that can only be used there. I see they have 'laptops' and 'gaming laptops'.

Should I be looking at a gaming laptop, or are they only really for graphics-intense games? I'm not bothered about using the 3D engine as I've only ever used the 2D dots before. Would be nice to run 7/8 countries with a large DB though.

Any advice appreciated - many thanks.

Firstly, the ARM processors will come in different specs, so it's impossible to know what the new Macbook will offer in terms of types of Arm processors.
It's rumoured that the first will be the A14x - but typical Apple, I can't find any information on it's speed, although the only info I found was that it was on par with the i7-8750H - which would make it good for FM.

Secondly, FM21 is not yet released, so we do not know the minimum specs required for FM21, although it will likely be similar to FM20.

As long as it meets the minimum specs for the game - then it will run.
If it's below or close to the minimum specs, expect below and up to minimum performance.
The higher it is above minimum spec, expect a higher performance.

See i'm willing to spend upto 2.5K pounds for my new laptop, as it will be my daily driver (I only play FM20) so, that is why I would consider laptops like XPS 15 (maybe 13), Razer Blade 15, MSI GS66, or something similar.

Can you suggest something in that kinda range?

Good Evening guys,

Been having a look through and so far no one has mentioned battery life from the 10 or so pages, I currently have a laptop that runs FM okayish and would prefer to renew and future proof so assuming I would get atleast £200/£250 I would have a budget of about £750 give or take £100 and wondering what the best spec laptop I could get that boasts an incredible battery life that won't need charging every 1 hour or so.

Cheers

They don't all specify battery specs

https://www.box.co.uk/1L6F6EAABU-HP-Pavilion-Gaming-15-ec1007na_2958258.html

Both of these are good for FM and boast 7-8 hours. But bewarned, FM is a processor game, so it will use more power than average.

You do have power management settings when not plugged in to reduce the battery usage - https://support.microsoft.com/en-ie/help/4027067/windows-10-how-to-adjust-power-and-sleep-settings

When plugged in - you can set the power management settings to be full to get the best out of FM.

Hi Smurf,

Thanks for much for you insightful reply, I would like to try and avoid using power management because in my experience is slows the main menus down and as such have seen this laptop last night, I wondered if this would be good for 5 leagues, medium database

https://www.box.co.uk/81LK0039UK-Lenovo-IdeaPad-Gaming-L340-15_2934443.html

I figured the less I could spend the better with Christmas coming up and it boasts 8-9 hours. (9 with power management but again not interested in using that) and even if it meant getting 6/7 hours playing FM I'd be more than a happy bunny.

My only worries is, is it worth £600 over my existing laptop:

Intel Core I7-4810MQ @ 2.8GHZ

GeForce GTX 850M

16GB Ram and an SSD

Only thing that let's my current laptop down is battery and not sure if replacing it would help?

I know its a big budget but I tend to keep my laptops for a long period of time. My current Macbook Pro 15 is from 2013 and still working well, but graphics are weak for today's standard with just 2GB RAM. I got Apple care with it so was sorted for 4 years.

I think 17in screen is too big to carry around freely, that is why I had mentioned 15in (I'm ok to get a 14 or 13 in, as long as they have graphic capabilities). I have heard that the new Intel Gen 11 Tiger Lake processors with Xe integrated graphics have good graphics to handle games. I know so far U processors laptops will be available soon and H will come round something in mid-2021.

So what would you suggest? Do you think the Xe will be able to handle FM20 and going forward FM21+? Or should I stick to the H processors?

Note: I will be using the laptop in work settings too so anything with flashy LED keyboards etc will not work.

As you go down in size of screen - the lesser your options can become.

I checked other sites - and I don't believe I see better value than the above.

Typical.  When i went back to check over the spec, add more storage and Windows Pro and one or two other things.  The processor is no longer available.

But this is what i was looking at.  Again, my biggest requirement is the laptop not to sound like it's taking of from my lap when playing a match on FM.

You can get in touch with them and go through the spec - they are very helpful.

I can't attest for battery life/sound of fans etc. You'd need to have a chat.

Cheers.  I've had a word about the Ryzen 7 4800H being out of stock.  I'd kind of sold myself on the 4800H.  So back to the drawing board if i want one soon.

I'll look at  the and look at the reviews for the machine itself.

Thanks again.

Hi,

I need help

i know that intel are better in single core but don’t know if intel is more optimised and smoother than amd.

i don’t know if it worth getting a laptop with a i5 10300h, 512 ssd and 1650/ti. Or is a i7 9750h or 10750h much of a improvement in fm. Because the single core is similar.

or get a laptop with a Ryzen 4600h & RX 5500m.

Performance, six of one, etc.

Don't think you'll see much gains across similar rated, what you gain in one you might lose in another.

What's your budget and we can take it from there.

Hello.

My current laptop runs fm very slowly so I am looking for a new one for fm20 and fm21 when it comes out.

My budget is around £700. I only use my laptop for browsing the Internet and mostly this site. I dont use it for movies or any other games other than fm. I play 2d classic so don't need fancy graphics.

I am pretty clueless on computers so would love some recommendations. My current save takes about 2/3 just to process one day on fm!

I run 5/6 countries with a large database usually. I am currently using England only but with a custom lower league database and it is going crazy slow.

Pretty much looking for a laptop that for fm is very quick and will allow me to enjoy the game as I hope but I dont use 3d graphics. I would love a laptop to just fly through fm as I do spend a lot of time pressing the space bar!

Thanks

A little steep for me. Looking around £800 but could stretch. Not dead set on AMD. Just that deal really. Open to anything.

Mainly (entirely) FM (journeyman 3D) over the next few years and the generic use, sat on the sofa. No other games.

Only thing that I'm bothered about is the laptop taking off when I went to match on my Macbook  Air. I know its not for gaming. But I'll) at the things you mentioned on that!

Hi mate.

If FM is the only game you play, then a dedicated graphics card really isn't needed, especially if you only play in 2D.

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8114448

That should suit your needs perfectly.  It'll be able to play FM at the level you've described really nicely, and the integrated graphics will be good enough if you do want to play in 3D at any point.

That laptop shouldn't really have any issues running FM, unless you have virus issues or some of the hardware is failing?

Have you checked for viruses etc?  Just to make sure you're not rushing into a purchase you don't necessarily need.

As Kev above has eluded too, that laptop is well above acceptable for FM ... it should run it like a dream... the only thing you need on that is more ram i'd say... if it's running slow.. consider a clean wipe of the computer and start from scratch and try not to fill it with crap!

For you're budget of around £700, you'd struggle to come up with a better laptop...

Obviously, the hardware is a few years old but that CPU is still pretty decent even by today's standards even though it wouldn't be classed as top of the range any more.

Yes, generally the RAM is one of the few things you can upgrade on a laptop (but that does depend on the laptop model - it's not always possible).  I'd check with your local computer repair store if you have one, but you'd probably be able to upgrade to 16GB RAM.

Okay thanks mate. I am just moving my FM stuff onto on external hardrive then I am going to wipe my computer and start from scratch. Would you recommend that?

Yep, sometimes a Windows refresh does the world of good.  Back up anything you want to keep (your FM saves will be in your Documents folder, in case you didn't know).  You may see a decent upgrade in performance as a fresh install should get rid of all the bloat you accumulate in your system over time.

Okay I will do that then.

I have moved my saves and tactics onto an External hardrive. Everything else can go- I will delete all the facepacks and everything too and reupload.

Sorry if this is a silly question but I have never rebooted and wiped a laptop before. Is this how to do it? https://www.techradar.com/uk/how-to/computing/how-to-factory-reset-a-laptop-1318286

Bear in mind that a lot of the sites with the facepacks, logo packs etc took these offline at the start of FM20 due to copyright issues, so you may struggle to get the same packs as you had.

I'd follow this guide, as some of the steps in the one you've linked look like they're for an older version of Windows: https://uk.pcmag.com/windows-xp-2/118555/how-to-factory-reset-windows-10

Performance, six of one, etc.

Don't think you'll see much gains across similar rated, what you gain in one you might lose in another.

What's your budget and we can take it from there.

I’m looking at a laptop with a i5 10300h, 1650, 256 ssd and 8gb ram(2933mhz)
&

laptop with Ryzen 4600h & rx 5500m, 256 ssd and 8gb ram(3200mhz)

so don’t know if Ryzen or intel is more optimised for fm?

Hi, would this be suitable for running 2-3 nations saves? I only ever really play one save long term for 10 seasons or so, with top league loaded and nearby nations.

Budget is about £600. Only requirements out with processor/ram is needs to be 14 inch HD screen.

It should work ok, even though the clock speed is below the minimum recommended for FM due to the way these newer processors work.

Another one to consider is this one.  I can speak from experience with the previous generation of this particular CPU (I have a laptop with the Ryzen 5 2500U) and managed a more demanding game setup than you're after and found the processing to be quick:

The Ryzen would be better I would think.

Traditionally, you would say Intel because of their single core performance, but that's not necessarily quite so true these days.

With these two CPU's specifically though, I'd go for the Ryzen.  The Intel scores marginally higher in single core performance (which is the biggest factor in FM, but it is a marginal difference), but the Ryzen has more cores and more threads so you will see a stronger overall performance from the Ryzen.

Hey, new to the forum. I recently got a laptop for my son for his birthday and wanted to know if it would run the upcoming FM game? Sadly I can not afford to get a better one so if it isn't good is there any settings i can use to make it better? He said something about adding a megapack to the game that is 16GB for faces, could the laptop handle that?

In terms of running FM, it should be able to handle it.  The CPU is pretty decent.  4GB RAM isn't ideal and may slow things up a bit, but it shouldn't be unusable in any way.  He probably won't be able to have the 3D match graphics at the highest settings, but I'd imagine it should handle medium settings well enough.

With regards to the graphic packs, that should be fine as long as he has left sufficient space on the storage to download them.

Thanks for reply. So both of these would run 2-3 nations comfortably then? Worried that Laptop 1 only has "1.6GHz processor speed with a burst speed of 4.2GHz". Would this be sufficient?

Laptop 1

Laptop 2

Thanks

I'd go with Laptop 2

Thank you very much for the reply. In regards to the ram can I make that better? And my son wanted to know how many leagues would it be able to handle? He wanted to run England, Germany, Spain, Italy and France. Thank you
