When you say single core, using the AMD as an example, where it says CPU AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4GHz, does that mean the single core value is 3.4GHz?

https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/medion-erazer-x30-core-i5-8400-8gb-1tb-geforce-gtx-1050ti-windows-10-gaming-10022640/version.asp

What do you think of that one at about £100 cheaper?

https://www.howtogeek.com/194756/cpu-basics-multiple-cpus-cores-and-hyper-threading-explained/

Some good info here.

You can get the Single Core rating here by comparing the processors you're looking at -
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleCompare.php
Although some of the comparisons will not be fair as it's based on benchmarking
and there's a line the comparison for "# of Samples"

So you could compare an i7 8750H vs 17 10750H - but there's only 1 sample taken for the 10750H - which doesn't give a fair comparison.

Another good resource, typically higher up the list the better:
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html?

Use the search and compare tools here also for Intel Processors
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark.html#@PanelLabel122139

I don't know if AMD have a site like that - but that's where the other searches come in handy for comparing.

I highlighted from a point in this thread - but read it more thoroughly

I’m looking for a new laptop 💻, all I basically do on it is play FM.

im looking at spending no more than £550 although I can stretch a little further, I’ve been looking at a few dell Inspiron laptops and HP’s aswell as a hauwei. However I’ve noticed I have no idea really what Would make a good laptop for FM , is there any suggestions anyone could make that would be a good choice?

Hi all

I hope you are all well.
As I imagine a lot of people are, I used to be an avid FM player but not had chance over the last few years but, due to corona virus, I want to get back into it.
I’ve been looking at the following laptop and wondered if this would play FM decently? I want to have the best experience possible with a budget anywhere between £1000-£1500 so recommendations are welcome.  I would also be looking to learn to code and, other than streaming, this is all I’d use the laptop for.

As you're getting a desktop - I went for a higher end processor

RAM/GRaphics card /HArd drive etc. can all be upgraded over time.

Great advantage of the desktop!

Hello all,

I have been playing FM 2010 for 10 years and I have been trying to unlock all the Steam achievement as so far....I got 87% !

So UDOO Bolt computer can only run about 25 Leagues running as it got 4 Cores at 2GHZ and sometime have boost up to 3.6GHZ!

I am looking build new Desktop PC that I want run and can handle 51 Leagues running.

Would AMD RYZEN 2700X(8 Core/16 Threads) should be able to do or should I go for 12 Core pc for more Future proof?

Not really sure what would be the best and it's amibigious as it's based on personal experience and expectations.

But what's your budget?

The Honor Magic Book got a good review from someone on here for FM - can't remember who though.

@Smurf, I think I'm getting there!

So, I've done a comparison of my current laptop, the AMD Ryzen Gaming and the Medion Erazer X30

image.thumb.png.3018df1bb583793ea8198822dcf47663.png

I think I've done that correctly? My conclusions; both desktops are a massive upgrade on my old laptop - which was decent but clearly shows why I struggle with 3D.

The Medion's GTX 1050 graphics card is still in "mid range" even though it is quite a way behind the 1660 of the Ryzen. However, you said it will be fine with 3D so I'm not too bothered about that score.

The price difference will allow me to uprade the RAM much quicker which is really the only place that the Ryzen is considerably better? I can also cheap out on monitor and other accessories for now (even begging or borrowing) bringing total outlay to £800 which is a considerable saving on my initial £1000 budget.

I'm going to keep looking and extend my table. I think those are the best options for me from thos two sites but I'd be daft not to check other retaillers.

The Ryzen seems best all round to be fair.

Medion is a better single core rating - but it's marginal!
Single core is important but so is the overall score of the processor

Plus you'll have more RAM and a better graphics card.

RAM plays a part in it - but it's not essential - 8gb is enough - and RAM is the cheapest and easiest thing to upgrade yourself.

What's lightening fast mean? How many leagues/divisions/database size do you want to run?

Do you prefer 15 or 17 inch laptop?

2nd one is slightly better

I've been looking at one of these myself, would anyone happen to know how loud the fans get when running a big database? I know gaming laptops can be pretty noisy but with less demanding games like FM and Cities Skylines I was wondering if anyone had any experience with these models? I'd be playing on the couch with the missus watching dreadful telly so wouldn't want one that sounds like a plane taking off.

The pitiful CPU mark for my current laptop shows me I'm doing the right thing by upgrading...

Look at the bottom one! Same graphics card, better processor, less RAM, £114 cheaper! I saw the Ryzen Gaming from CCL didn't have an OS so that's why the price went up.

The catch... Tornado is out of stock. But... I've found the same reailer selling it from their Ebay account. How is that even possible?

EDIT: Scratch that, apparently limited availability means out of stock lol.

EDIT2: How hard is it to do a custom build on PCSpecialist? Tornado was originally from there but now sold by Currys.

Ryzen Toranod looks intense!

Don't know why that is cheaper than the Ryzen Gaming one - ok it has less RAM - but that's cheap and easy to put in.

Have you got links to these?

I don't know if they will do it but you could try emailing the Tornado details to PCSpecialist and ask them to recommend a configuration.

Hey everyone,

Hope you and your loved ones are all healthy during these hard days.

I'd like to get the feedback of MacBook Pro 16" owners regarding the 3D match view performance of FM20? Are you able to watch the 3D in the "Very High" detail level smoothly, and of course what is your GPU as it may be AMD Radeon Pro 5300M or AMD Radeon Pro 5500M?

Thanks in advance for your contribution.

  • Intel Core i5-1035G1 1.0 GHz
  • 8GB RAM + 256GB SSD
  • 15.6" FHD Display

This is really good value. One thing to bear in mind though is that the Ice Lake CPUs (of which this is one) are designed to prioritise battery life over performance even more than the U variants, so this is probably the worst FM experience you'll have on an i5 laptop from either of the last couple of generations. Battery should last longer though.

There's actually no compulsion to ever activate Windows 10. I think Microsoft are happy to just have people on their platform. The only benefit really to buying a key is that you can customise wallpaper etc and it gets rid of the watermark in the bottom right. You can download the installation from Microsoft's website right onto a USB stick and use that to install on the laptop. Alternatively I believe you can play FM on Linux (which is completely free) these days if you feel adventurous.

It's very similar to the previous one, spec wise. Read some reviews on the specific models to help you decide.

And I have an Inspiron - I find it excellent.

Recently got back into playing Fm on my wife's small and slow laptop. Games obviously getting slower the further I get in so am looking to get a new pc (with the justification that the kids could use it for school work!).

I'm not bothered about 3d as I barely use it. I basically want something that can run several nations a few leagues and at a good speed.

The problem is that my budget is probably no more than £400 so I'm going to probably have to look at the second hand market. Does anyone have any advice and what the minimum spec I should look for is? Many thanks

Dell Outlet has a number of laptops within your price range. They are all refurbished by Dell so may be a better option than a second hand one.

Bearing in mind that "refurbished" means the hard drive wiped and the outside being given a once over with a microfibre cloth. At least they'll give you a warranty.

Well that's not exactly what happens.

Quote

A refurbished laptop is either a computer that has been returned to the retailer or manufacturer for a refund by a customer or a computer that has just come off a lease. The computer may have had a slight defect or simply not met a customer’s expectations. Before a laptop can be resold, any defective components are repaired or replaced and the computer is then carefully examined to ensure it works properly. Any computer that goes through this process must be identified as refurbished or reconditioned.

8gb RAM - and the best processor you can get -

Processors are ranked on this site https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html - the higher up the list the better - generally.

Well it was slight hyperbole. But not much. Most of these laptops will have been perfectly functional when returned to Dell as in the low end it's just not worth investing a lot of time to fix the broken ones. That leaves the "careful examination" which will involve switching it on and checking the I/O, screen, touchpad and keyboard is all functional.

They do more than that. Once it is returned it goes under an inspectiong process, if it doesn't meet certain standards they are usually marked defective and destroyed under an ISO standard. Once they pass the initial inspection the computer is thoroughly cleaned, inside and out, that's it, they open it up and clean all the parts they can. Typically using compressed air to remove dust etc. Comestic repairs or defects would then be repaired if possible. The battery and memory are typically replaced. Most of the time they willinstall a brand new hard drive - and install a fresh copy of the OS.

You can't really wipe a hard drive - so it's usually best to destroy the old one and install a new one. Especially with SSDs as you need to wipe data multiple times to erase the disk properly - as such with an SSD you would shorten it's lifespan doing this.

I'm just trying to dispell the myth that a refurbished laptop is simply opened up, turned on, and reboxed to sell again - it's not that simple.

Refurbished laptops are typically restored to like new condition.

Hello everyone, i'm looking to upgrade my current laptop (Celeron N2830) to something more modern.

I have got my eye on this: https://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/laptops-notebooks-and-2-in-1-laptops/inspiron-15-5000/spd/inspiron-15-5593-laptop/cn59308?view=configurations

I want to run ~5 leagues with a medium/large database using 2D... how would this laptop cope? E.g-The star rating during game set up.

It would be fine for that. Ice Lake processors like the one in this laptop run at quite low clock speeds, so you might consider a Comet Lake (also 10th gen) based laptop instead such as https://www.johnlewis.com/asus-vivobook-14-x412fa-ek865t-laptop-intel-core-i5-processor-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-16gb-intel-optane-14-inch-full-hd which would be a bit faster.

It would be ok. Can't comment on star rating for start up as they are ambigious and not entirely reliable.

You'll have to find a balance you're comfortable with in terms of leagues/nations/divisions etc.

The link isn't working.

Could I ask your opinions on this?

It will work - but  you'll have to find a balance you're comfortable with in terms of leagues/nations/divisions etc.

Not the best but for £350 it's never going to be amazing. Keep in mind it's 3 years old at this stage, and most computers have a life of 5-7 years. So you're about halfway through it's life at the moment.

Posting on behalf of my brother  who played football manager 10+ years ago and is now looking to buy a new pc or laptop and fm2020 he has a few questions and this is the best place to go.

1. Best recommended pc or laptop on a budget ( sorry dont have a space £1000+ atm)

2. Is football manager 2019-2020 actually worth buying .

3.many years ago German players could not play for Germany.  Is that still the case.?

4. Does game come in dvd form or is it just a download option. If downloadable only, what is the link to buy the game?

Thank you guys

Hi

After a year or so away from the game Coronavirus is driving me back into FMs loving arms.

I need a new laptop to play, and have no idea on these things. Ive found two in my price range, could anyone advise on which is better?

Both are AMD Rayzen cores, however the 3 seems to have a better speed than the 5 which seems strange to me.

I appreciate any help, cheers.

An i5 10th gen processor would surely be super quick in comparison to my current celeron n2830?

Currently i can run 5 leagues on a small database with a half star start up rating! I'll take anything better than that.

Not really sure what would be the best and it's ambitious as it's based on personal experience and expectations.

But what's your budget?

£600 is my Budgets as I already got Power Supply(PSU) and Graphics card. All I need is Motherboard, Good CPU, Ram and Case as that about it!

The Ryzen 5 3600 is probably the best value current gen CPU at the moment and a system based on that should come in well under your budget. You might stretch to the 3700x but that would be a marginal improvement unless you're running a lot of leagues.

I brought a Lenovo ideapad l340 for £659.with 4 gb graphic card,16 gb ram with 2.4 ghz i5-9300 h with 4.1 turbo.i wanted to give my impressions of it as I think you wont get much better for price.see picture below if the leagues I am running. So far it's been quick to process the days so maybe I could run more.the game engine looks really good too.i think the battery life could be definitely better tho as seems to run down quite quick.its my first lap top for fm so really happy with it.any one wants to know more just ask.i know far better lap tops out there but for the price which is reasonable I thought this might help a few people.i ordered this from Lenovo website &you can customize to suit

Aha, it's gone out of stock since I posted it. Sorry! I think the price is the same at Amazon in any case - £499

@Smurf expressed some reservations about build quality. Can you give any insight on that?

I can buy AMD Ryzen 9 3900 CPU  with motherboard for £469 then added 16GB Ram plus pc case as I know it will be bit over £600 but it will be worth it. Yes I do running lots of leagues :)

It's my first laptop so I wouldn't be the best person to ask as I dont have much to compare with.one thing I will say is I found the click pad a right pain when I was downloading, pasting etc to get all the real logos etc.i spent £10 on a mouse which works fine so doesnt bother me.the key board etc all feels fine plus loads up really quick from being turned off.i would of thought if you put a expensive lap top in my hands I probably could tell the difference in a few things . Edit, sorry I cant be more help.i just went upstairs &checked my wife's work laptop which a dell.it has a metal casing which feels far more sturdy as mine is plastic.plus click pad feels more sturdy too.but key board feels the same.i hope that helps 😀

The same components are cheaper on Amazon. And with that processor do yourself a favour and get a better motherboard!

What Motherboard should I get if I am using AMD RYZEN 8 3900 CPU?
