Hello Fellow FM-ers

I am looking for a new laptop, my current Laptop is slow with FM2019 and FM 2020.
LENOVO Legion Y520-15IKBN
Intel Core i7-7700HQ

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050
16 GB RAM

What kind of specs do i need to look out for to run FM 2020 really good, my budget is 1300 Euro's.

Damn me, did not read the full post title :)

I'm not sure why that laptop would be running FM slowly, as it's only a couple of years old and was top of the line at the time, and any better laptop, for FM at least, would only be a minimal upgrade at best.

Me neither mate, i am only using 4 a 5 leagues at a time (with 2 divisions max) and i am experiencing some kind of lag with FM 2020 meaning when i click it does not respond right away the days go slowly by, with FM Touch 2020 respond time is perfect everything is great (but that is Touch duh)

But thank you for your response.

Odd - I have the same setup on my laptop which I bought for FM - granted I don't play FM20.

Before you fork out all that money - what kinda maitenance have you run on your computer?

What hard drive space have you got?

Recommend https://www.ccleaner.com/ free version

https://www.howtogeek.com/172820/beginner-geek-what-does-ccleaner-do-and-should-you-use-it/

And also - update your drivers https://www.lenovo.com/ie/en/faqs/windows10-faqs/how-to-upgrade-drivers/

You will also probably need to upgrade your Nvidea graphic drivers - https://www.geforce.com/drivers

For 1300 you can get a pretty sweet rig - but I'd try fixing your own first before committing to a new computer and running into similar issues down the road.

In 16gb RAM range - this is the best I can see on the site I use to filter - similar specs if you use somewhere else https://www.box.co.uk/81Q4000SUK-Lenovo-Legion-Y540-17_2714869.html

In the 8gb RAM range this saves you a few quid - and you could up the RAM later on saving you about £200: https://www.box.co.uk/7JZ86EAABU-HP-Pavilion-Gaming-15-dk0026na_2614938.html

It is all down to expectation. If you want a game that will speed through days and weeks in the blink of an eye, then probably not. But I use a recently purchased laptop with an identical spec as above, it is perfectly fine to run FM IMHO.

@Thug-angel you might also want to check your task manager while running FM to see if any other processes are using the processor. You might have some malware.

@Thug-angel @Gangor good call - free version should be able to find anthing malicious https://www.malwarebytes.com/lp/sem/ie/?gclid=CjwKCAjw-YT1BRAFEiwAd2WRtpu_taVhRSCcIQW6xHEGRmN0fknOiTXcbzqaIbjrgJJtSlUi3cZI2RoCfTUQAvD_BwE

Hi

Unsure where to exactly post this query being a newbie :)

I purchased fm20 around a week back after years out of playing the game on my laptop, I am really enjoying the game however I know based on the specs below it will naturally run slow.  Half a star is fm rating based on my pc credentials.

I only watch the match in 2d so it doesn't fuss me as much but general speed from day to day is very slow for me with 4 leagues set and a medium database, and I'm sure even a small database wont change it significantly obviously based on the spec of my pc. Going from day to day or between games seems to take 5/10 mins

I have heard of google stadia and I'm thing about trying it on their? Does anyone have any feedback and will the performance be a lot better? I know its online based but that doesn't phase me too much but just for a better experience before I do purchase it?

PC details below:

  • General. Brand. Lenovo. ...
  • Display. Size. 15.60-inch. ...
  • Processor. Processor. Intel Pentium Quad Core 4th Gen N3540. ...
  • Memory. RAM. 8tb. ...
  • Graphics. Graphics Processor. Intel Integrated HD Graphics.

Just really wanna get invested in the game but obviously at present a high end machine is out of my depth. So just looking to make the gameplay as best and fast as possible with the comparison of stadia v my current setup

Thanks in advance!

Nathan

This used to be a top end laptop and would have been very expensive when new...about 8 years ago. It would perform now similarly to a laptop you could buy new for £2-300. A brand new laptop at the same price will give much better performance.

Edit: this one for instance: https://ao.com/product/nxhf9ek019-acer-laptop-black-73809-251.aspx

New AMD based laptops coming out over the next month or so should provide better performance at a lower price. It might be worth waiting a bit if you can...

Hi All

My old reliable Vaio (coming up to it's 10th birthday soon, i7 gen 1 I think) is finally starting to die due to constant working from home - overheating a lot, despite being recently cleaned and heat gelled.

I'm after a new laptop, all I use it for is working form home (but this is remote desktopping, so not intensive) and would like to get FM20, as well as probably play some other oldish games like shooters from a few years ago (doesn't have to be high end graphics). I am always paranoid about laptops overheating, so I'd rather get something higher spec than needed, for that and future proofing. Is there any difference in brands on which have good fans/heat flow, or is it all down to the processor and graphics specs?

Budget would be up to say £1100 if this gets you a better setup. Less would obviously be ideal if it's not going to be a noticeable difference. It'd have to be a 17 inch thing, as I hate small screens.

Any suggestions? From looking around and in recent posts, I've found these, but I'm by no means an expert, so don't really know what to look for, other than the obvious.

Both Intel and AMD are in the process of bringing out new generations of laptop processors. The AMD ones look far more promising, both compared to their last generation and to Intel. Not too many models available yet but might be worth waiting for? Otherwise, the Lenovo gives better value and the aesthetic is less garish if you also use it for work.

Lenovo are ok - but often finished with plastic casings which can break if not treated well and more than not geared towards a professional workstation rather than gaming.

MSI have always been more game centric - and I'd be going with MSI and I'd trust them to have better cooling solution - and they are mostly finished with a nice aluminium case.

How about this - a newer processor and all that - would be excellent. Pick your parts for Web Brower and anti virus etc. using the link.
Plus they are custom built so best parts are almost guaranteed.

Unless it's the high-end AMDs then typically the Intel processors are better for FM which has been proven in benchmarking tests on the forums over theyears.

We won't know anything about performance of any new processor until they actually come out and tested - and FM is a different beast to other games.

I don't know about being better aestheticly, it's often a plastic case, MSI are more gaming and often than not have aluminium casing, which is a far nicer finish than a plastic airbrushed to look like that.

Agree though if it's also used for work the Lenovo laptops are geared more towards a professional laptop look than a gaming one.

Also check the non-pro version. It comes with a lower refresh screen, but you're hardly likely to need 144hz for FM.

Yes, but testing in performance benchmarks suggest similar single thread performance and about 30-40% more multi thread performance (compared to Intel 10th gen) which bodes very well for FM. The prices for equivalently spec'd system are likely to be slightly lower too (at least in terms of recommended retail)

Yeah, it was the design rather than the finish I was referring to. I have a bit of a bias against the RGB gaming aesthetic - can you tell? ;-)

Hi All,

Any assistance would be much appreciated, after many years of trudging along with each new FM on my aging laptop I feel it has come time to upgrade, I have created two laptops (custom built), one AMD, one Intel and am hoping that you may be able to assist in advising the best option for me with FM in mind, and even possibly for other games (see below).

For a bit more clarity the laptop will be used predominantly for gaming but with multiple apps running simultaneously generally, any other gaming would more on the management/sim side/strategy/CRPG's (i.e Cities Skylines as I've not played and want to) rather than FPS's (EFT/Valorant maybe at a push as not available on console) presently, but with the option to play other games when released in the future. I know that throws a rather large caveat in but I won't be looking for Ultra HD Graphics at any point, and would just like games to run smoothly and for FM specifically, process more leagues in a quicker time, I understand this is all relative, what is quick for one person isn't necessarily quick enough for someone else, but with a generic league setup, just to progress through a season with some speed.

Know the RAM is 100% overkill but the cost now versus the need to upgrade at a later date is pushing me towards it.

I would consider waiting a bit longer for the AMD 4000 series laptop processors if you are looking to spend big as they seem to offer a large improvement

Depends how much space you need. I have a 128gb SSD drive - and that's fine for the OS to be installed on. And then I have a normal HDD of 1TB storage that Install all my programmes and download files to.

For FM SSD doesn't offer improvement in performance.

Hey all. I'm currently looking at ordering a desktop from one of the following places: Laptopsdirect.co.uk or CCLonline.com ... purely because those two have been recommended to me and they're fairly local.

I'm set on a desktop, I have had a laptop for many years now and want a change. Also, they have all died after 5/6 years rather than become obsolete, if that makes sense. Want something I can now keep for years and years and upgrade rather than buy from scratch again.

Aside from the usual stuff, it will be purely for FM. The only other games I play are older so I don't need to worry about those. It being fantastic for FM is my biggest concern.

I've never been able to play 3D graphics on anything over than lowest settings and this is my number 1 wish for my new desktop - to be able to play on high, even highest settings.

Unfortunately graphics cards are something I just don't understand! All those little names and numbers look the same to me!

As long as the price is below £1000 I'll be happy, especially if I won't need to upgrade anything for a long, long time. I've started looking at a few:

https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/lenovo-legion-t530-28icb-core-i5-9400f-16gb-1tb-hdd-256gb-ssd-geforce-gtx-90l300kfuk/version.asp
https://www.cclonline.com/pc/gaming-pcs/ryzen/ccl-ryzen-gaming-pc/
https://www.cclonline.com/pc/gaming-pcs/elite-pro/ccl-elite-pro-gt-gaming-pc/

The key things that I've been trying to look for so far are 16gb ram, simply because it's better than my old laptop that had 8. That's getting expensive so I balanced that with an i5 processor then just fiddled with the cards, the above ones have GeForce GTX 1070, GeForce GTX 1660 6GB and GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB. A lot of GeForce going on there. There's also a similar Ryzen gaming desktop for £80 more, not sure if that is worth it or not.

I'd say the ones over £900 are a little bit too much, I'd need to buy a keyboard, mouse and monitor too. I don't mind going fairly budget with those for now to keep everything under that £1000 budget and upgrade them next payday.

What do you think? Is there better out there for that price bracket? Do I actually need to go so high just for FM's 3D graphics?

Also, just heard from someone I know who has an old desktop. It is like 10/11 years old but cost around £600 back then. I'mtrying to find out the actual specs but the point is, could something like this be upgraded to what I need or is it pointless trying?

It won't be worth it, you have to replace the entire lot really.. only thing you might keep is the case

First one has F in processor name. This means your cpu has no integrated graphics card. Not a big deal but if your graphics card went faulty then you'd be in trouble. No graphics card no computer.

It also has Windows 10 G. Not sure what that is???

Second one is basically the same. Will take a look later for you as i am still in bed.

It's MSI so might swing it in my favour

*EDIT* Apologies I didn't see the AMD one - that's better overall - but it's single core rating is lower.

They are all good.

You could save more money by going with a 8gb RAM setup and going for a decent graphics card like the GTX 1050.

As you want to be upgrading it as you go along - adding RAM is simple and cheap. And you can change the graphics card later if you need.

For FM the 1050 would be able to play at high settings.

Hi all,

I've got a budget of approx. £1,250. Looking for a laptop that will run FM lightening fast.

16gb ram if possible.

(Any laptops that I can modify myself in the future would be handy too)

Thanks.

RAM plays a part in it - but it's not essential - 8gb is enough - and RAM is the cheapest and easiest thing to upgrade yourself.

What's lightening fast mean? How many leagues/divisions/database size do you want to run?

Do you prefer 15 or 17 inch laptop?

Hi all,

I’m looking at getting a desktop for the first time, and have little knowledge on how to get the best value spec for my budget.

Budget is roughly between £600-£750.

Ideally I’d want something I upgrade parts on myself further down the line.

Thanks

Hi, many thanks. I'll have a good look into the second one.

Not overly fussed about screen size, but quick enough to run 100k players + over a decade or so without much drop in performance. Thanks.

Thank you very much for your help Smurf it is much appreciated. A few follow up questions if I may?

When you say single core, using the AMD as an example, where it says CPU AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4GHz, does that mean the single core value is 3.4GHz? So looking at the following desktop in the product description it says with up to 4.0 GHz clock speed, is that better for FM? It also has "dedicated 4 GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti Graphics" with 8gb of RAM. As you say, I looked u the cost of 32gb of RAM and it came to around £175 I think, nice easy upgrade for the future.

What do you think of that one at about £100 cheaper?

hi there, I have a budget around the 750 mark, my current laptop has the following specs:

https://www.johnlewis.com/lenovo-g510-laptop-intel-core-i7-8gb-ram-1tb-15-6-black/p1101267

but struggles quite a bit with the current version, especially in the matchday and graphical side of things. 2d classic is very stuttery/laggy and i havent reaally played as a result since around jan time. It's odd as it seems on paper to me as if it's quite efficient and I've had zero issues with previous games, but obviously not quite good enough now. I tend to load up the 5 european leagues with the small database. I only watch the game in 2d classic. Any reccomendations/help would be much appreciated. Keen to reduce that laggy-ness so graphics might be quite important for me? But also don't want to take half a year to get through a season, but I'm assuming the two are interlinked!

Aside from FM I use my laptop mainly just for streaming videos and doing research work using stuff like word etc...

might this be any good?

Many thanks in advance

Yes it would be fine, although you might consider waiting if you can for Ryzen 4000 processor based laptops which are coming out at the moment as they are a big improvement on last gen. I would definitely recommend reading a few reviews for the specific model you're looking at since gaming laptops are notorious for having poor keyboards etc and that might be a concern for your research work.

Hi all

I hope you are all well.

As I imagine a lot of people are, I used to be an avid FM player but not had chance over the last few years but, due to corona virus, I want to get back into it.

I’ve been looking at the following laptop and wondered if this would play FM decently? I want to have the best experience possible with a budget anywhere between £1000-£1500 so recommendations are welcome.  I would also be looking to learn to code and, other than streaming, this is all I’d use the laptop for.

I'd double check the specs you've been told, because the AMD A8-9600 does not have a turbo speed of 4.2GHz or a base speed of 3.3GHz - according to the AMD website, the base speed is 3.1GHz, and the turbo speed is 3.4GHz

I'd also watch out, because the Intel PCs have 9 year old processors in them. On that basis, even though the 2nd one has the fastest processor of the lot, I'd go with the first because it's newer and less likely to die on you, but I'd ideally not go for any of them.

What is your budget?

The two Intel chips are 10 years old vs that AMD at about 4, but then the AMD is quite a weak processor so they are not so dissimilar https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/AMD-PRO-A8-9600-vs-Intel-i7-2600-vs-Intel-i5-2400/2860vs1vs793

AMD still probaly the weakest though, honestly I wouldn't be buying so old hardware generally as it may have limited life left in it.

Option#3 actually has a new GPU so must have been upgraded recently.

If you want to go with a laptop, the one you linked would work great, but this one should run it better (and any other game you want to throw at it, and would do any heavy processing work, like compiling complex code, graphics work, etc you need it to do):

https://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/system/Tracer-IV-17-Xtreme-400

About £80 cheaper than the one you linked, with a better and more recent processor, more hard drive space, and a better graphics card. Same amount of RAM, but Cyberpower can customise laptops, so if you really wanted to help futureproof it, for the same price as the laptop you linked, you could add to the existing 16GB RAM to have 32GB RAM instead.

Hello all,

I have been playing FM 2010 for 10 years and I have been trying to unlock all the Steam achievement as so far....I got 87% !

So UDOO Bolt computer can only run about 25 Leagues running as it got 4 Cores at 2GHZ and sometime have boost up to 3.6GHZ!

I am looking build new Desktop PC that I want run and can handle 51 Leagues running.

Would AMD RYZEN 2700X(8 Core/16 Threads) should be able to do or should I go for 12 Core pc for more Future proof?

https://www.howtogeek.com/194756/cpu-basics-multiple-cpus-cores-and-hyper-threading-explained/

Some good info here.

You can get the Single Core rating here by comparing the processors you're looking at -
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleCompare.php
Although some of the comparisons will not be fair as it's based on benchmarking
and there's a line the comparison for "# of Samples"

So you could compare an i7 8750H vs 17 10750H - but there's only 1 sample taken for the 10750H - which doesn't give a fair comparison.

Another good resource, typically higher up the list the better:
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html?

Use the search and compare tools here also for Intel Processors
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark.html#@PanelLabel122139

I don't know if AMD have a site like that - but that's where the other searches come in handy for comparing.

I highlighted from a point in this thread - but read it more thoroughly

I’m looking for a new laptop 💻, all I basically do on it is play FM.

im looking at spending no more than £550 although I can stretch a little further, I’ve been looking at a few dell Inspiron laptops and HP’s aswell as a hauwei. However I’ve noticed I have no idea really what Would make a good laptop for FM , is there any suggestions anyone could make that would be a good choice?

thanks
