New Laptop/PC Advice -Please Read the Opening Post

@Smurf

Hey mate. Just been reading through this thread and I have to say your contribution along with others is astounding. Much appreciated. I looked at the following laptops and would like advice on which to opt for that would be good for the next version of football manager. I'm ideally looking for a laptop that can run the 3d match engine very smoothly, run a large database and a couple of countries without running slow.

Thanks

Hello everyone I have done abit of reading on a new laptop as I currently have a i3 5th gen which is obviously going slow now.

I have a budget of about £600 max. I understand that processors that are underclocked are not good for FM but is this the case with 8th gen i5s for example or just older gens? Would it be worth getting a processor such as the i5-8300h instead? Not sure if the 1.6ghz standard on the U processor would be an issue.

Dont play on 3d graphics but understand a dedicated graphics card is better, so happy to get one but just a entry level nothing too mad.

i will always get at least 8gb of ram.

Also, does anyone remember getting a laptop last black friday and wether any of the gaming laptops of about £800 reduced by a couple hundred? Thanks any help is apperciated.

Could stretch to this. With a i5-9300h processor and a dedicated graphics card and 8gb ram and SSD storage. Think thats good for £650 tbh?

I'm looking at getting a Window Surface or something of that ilk (portable and touchscreen) for both work but also to play FM20 and beyond...

I tend to play with a large database with probably about 10 leagues normally although I do use Dan's English Lower League database sometimes.

Ideally I'd like to use 3D graphics as well but that's not set in stone. I have about £1000 roughly at the minute as a budget but that budget can be flexible

I’d also love to know about this as very keen on the base model of the new surface https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/p/surface-laptop-3/8VFGGH1R94TM/34SW?activetab=techspecs wonder if @Smurf can help

Are there any decentish laptops around £300 that will run fm 2020? I don't need all the leagues - just the main big ones (England, Germany, France, Italy, Spain) and I'm not worried about it being super quick - just needs to be smooth and not feel laggy in 2d mode

I've had laptops in past that have really struggled with the switch in engine from fm18. Thanks!

Hi all. I'm looking for some different advice to that normally asked. Im not looking for an ultra quick machine that is going to blast through seasons, but I do want one that will run in 3d.

Im looking for a 1st pc for a 9 year old and need a dedicated graphics card (I think), to run the game in 3d. I'm not overly concerned with speed, just so long as it works, but would like some general advice.

As it's only for a 9 year old I want it as cheap as possible, but at the same time it needs to be able to run FM20 in 3d, (because I think he's old enough to give FMT a go now).

At the same time I dont know what I need and what I dont need so I want to make sure that what I buy does the job, but at the same time I want it to be cheap because he's only 9!

Suggestions and ideas would be appreciated. I'm looking for a desktop rather than a laptop or something else. That's about it really. Help please. 🤔😁

Budget would really help here  - cheap for me might be expensive for someone else.

As he's 9 he will probably want to play other games - and you will also need to purchase a Monitor.

Dear all,

For 2-3 leagues and medium settings for 3d which option is better?

First is : i5-7200U,8gb,1T HDD,GTX MX150(ACER)
OR
second : Ryzen 5 2500U,8gb,256 SSD,VEGA 8(DELL)

Thanks a lot

In this instance I'd go with the i5 7200 U as it's base processor is 2.5ghz - FM requies 2.2ghz

The Ryzen does not meet FM minimum specs.

Will this run the game at a reasonable speed. I do like a big database, but it's not necessary, I've been more into british only signings anyway so not much need for players from Belarus...

The main issue i've had this time around on my macbook pro (old thing) is that the 3d engine doesnt work (2D occasionally crashes too) so I've had to instant result and it's been a horrible experience.

laptop will be used for streaming and general typing/browsing too.

Thanks Smurf. May I ask what is better between the one you recommended and the one that has a 17.3 inch screen? Also would either be absolutely fine with 3d match engine.

Yeh they work just fine but very expensive for what is under the hood. You can get a better Windows laptop for half the price.

Thinking about getting this, usually play 3 or 4 leagues on large database and in 3D. Not bothered about graphics being amazing just want them decent. Will this be ok?

That's fine.

Note - it may not do all the leagues/database size to the speed you require - recommend reducing leagues/players until desired speed of progress is ok.

Why a Mac Mini? Terribly expensive for what is under the hood.

The UHD Graphics 630 is integrated in the Intel processor - it can run the 3D engine but you'll have to adjust the 3D match settings detail level to something you are happy with.

Again - why Mac Mini? You can buy a PC for half the price that is twice as good.

Note - it may not do all the leagues/database size to the speed you require - recommend reducing leagues/players until desired speed of progress is ok.

Probably  best you can do on that budget https://www.box.co.uk/81HN00S6UK-Lenovo-V130_2560659.html

Nope.

Prefer Mac and have the money :) plus other reasons. Only need to know that the graphics cars won’t get me into trouble (even though I’ll probably end up with the 2D engine).

@Smurf this has been really helpful. I’m not ready to purchase quite yet, but hopefully putting the guide to practice. How would you evaluate the below options.

Having looked a bit around I've found these two and was wondering if either of these would be good for FM20

If you have the money then buy a super laptop - you'd get much bang for your buck.

But if you're set on it it would be fine.

i will be building a new pc , mostly for Strategy games and of course Football Manager

im in a dilemma on what CPU i need , im going for either a Intel i9 9900k or the new Ryzen 3950x

which one suited to my needs on FM

Either is fine for FM.

Cheers.

Nothing. Better off waiting till you have more money.

Ok so I apologise if I’m on the wrong thread before hand. So I’m about to purchase a laptop after a few years of playing football manager touch, however as a student I’m on a budget so I can’t exactly splash out on a expensive laptop. Most of the laptops around my budget range have 4gb ram is this good enough to run football manager or no? I also have no idea about specs and so on with laptops so thanks for all you guys help in advance.

On your first post about buying a computer - copied above - you said you were looking for at 4gb RAM laptops as this is all you can afford.

Now you come back and say you can buy an Apple Mac?

Apple Mac start at about £1000

If you spend £1000 on a laptop you'll get a far superior computer for Football Manager.

Of course, if you still want this Apple Mac then go for it.

Yeah I’m a student now so I get student finance so I can afford to get loose a little bit lol. So Apple Mac is superior for it? Something I most likely will go for but is there any cheaper option.

Thanks

I currently have a Lenovo G50  and it can't seem to cope with FM at all and is even really slow on FM touch.

Ideally I'd spend around £350-400. I only play one nation but like a large database if possible. I always play text commentary so not worried about graphics. I've been looking at the two below- is the ACER worth the extra money and going beyond my budget?

This is considerably better  https://www.box.co.uk/G531GU-AL315T-ASUS-ROG-Strix-G531GU-AL315T_2601655.html

A Mac at this price would be entry price point.

A lot better how?

Both 15inch screens
Both 8gb RAM
Both GTX 1050 graphics card

Only slight upgrade is in processor and it's not even worth mentioning - you're paying an extra £50 for a small boost that is barely noticeable.

In saying that - if you're happy to pay £50 extra then go for it. It's slightly better - so should be ok.

Add about 100 pound and you can buy PC with Ryzen 3600 (little bit better single core performance and about 70% better multicore) and GTX 1660.

The ryzen has a slower clock base speed. It has more cores/threads but that has been repeatedly downplayed for FM - as a lot of the game is still handled in the single thread.

Ok FM will and does create as many threads and uses as many cores are as available.

In the single core performance rating

Ryzen 5 3600 2912
i3 9350K 2638

The difference isn't huge and I'd prefer the base speed over more cores for FM.
