It will work - but it won't be great - I'd only really recommend something in around 600 quid.

But if that's your budget then go for it.

I'm town on what to get out of these 2. Which out of these 2 would you recommend? I'm not too clued up on Ryzen processors, is the Ryzen 5 3350H better than an i7-8750H?

I'd go for the i7 laptop. It has a better processor for FM (which is very much a single core heavy game, rather than multi-core, and the i7 is a faster processor anyway), more RAM, more storage space overall, and a better graphics card. Performance-wise, the HP laptop you linked to is just better than the ASUS John Lewis laptop, no question.

100% agree.

Hi Smurf,

Downgrading myself with a small budget, max £450 (cheaper the better, would prefer £350-400). Must be a 13-14” screen but will only be using for FM (sparingly) and O365.

Have been erm looking at a few and not sure, advice please.

or could I get a 4gb cheaper machine, like a Acer swift 3 and upgrade the RAM or would that not work as well?

Not too fussed about graphics and I’d use an external HD for storage if needed.

Thanks,

In that case the first one is better in the processor.

Just seen a review on the HP one, not sure if I'm comfortable with the hinge being in the middle. What would you recommend for a budget of £900? Ideally want an i7 and 16gb ram. Looking for longevity and to play the next few editions.cheers

The laptop lid is flimsy, according to reviews, and can bend, but it doesn't affect the screen, the reviewers reckon there is a bit of protection between the lid and the screen.

It can also get a bit hot due to it's TDP settings.

If you go for a smaller screen and 8gb RAM (you can add RAM very easily at a later point)

Or this - again 15 inches - and 8gb RAM - but again you buy RAM easily and cheapily and install easily

Cheers mate. Is 16gb ram overkill for FM? Not really too clued up with what's best for FM.

8gb Ram is plenty. But 16gb is no harm whatsoever.

FM will use RAM for some functions, but it is a lot to do with the processor.

Performance wise at that price bracket you are in the i5 8300 h and the i7 8750h range.

The latter being the better processor overall, but for FM the two have similar enough single core performance, which FM will want to use a lot of.

You cant upgrade the processor or the graphics card easily in a laptop... but upgrading ram and hard drive is pretty simple.

Hi Smurf,

Hoping you can help. I've been playing fm for a long time and have looked on and off for an upgrade for a few years but never really know where to start. Ideally I would like something decent that I will be able to use for a good number of years to justify the cost although hard to predict future specs...

Main things for me are (laptop, windows);

Doesn't get to hot, especially as I sit and have on my lap a lot. Maybe vents on keyboard is beneficial?

Quiet, with long battery life (10hrs?)

I would like to play on a large database with a lot of countries without the game taking an age to progress and without the laptop heating up as it cannot cope.

Playing in 3D would be nice as I dont usually do this but not completely essential.

Decent memory to store videos etc from the go pro/camera.

Budget: £1400 tops. Ideally £800-1200.

I know this is an fm laptop discussion mate but I was hoping that if you had a couple of options, you may be able to point me in 1 direction based on the other things I am looking for.

I will use the laptop for general internet browsing, excel, word, fm and maybe a little go pro/photo editing (I'm not very good).

Sorry I've made it such a long read and thank you in advance for your help!

Hi Smurf,

Looks good. Is there anything for maybe £200-300 more that meets the requirements and has longer battery life?

I only say this as I like to use the laptop when I travel on the train and by air for long haul.

Also, is there anything that the laptop above doesn't do v what I said I'd like mate? I'm not very tech savvy in that regard. So any help is much appreciated.

I don't really want to spend that much but if it's going to last, I'd rather pay a little more and meet all the requirements!

Finally, I know you can't predict but do you have a guess of how big a database I could potentially run on the above? And also on the other suggestion (if you have one)

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it!

I was talking to my younger brother tonight and now considering buying him a rig for his birthday/Christmas.
I'm looking to spend about $600 AUD but not completely sure if I can find value for what he wants within that budget.

He wants to run Adobe to edit videos for school, and use it to edit/upload his Fortnite videos. I'd also say some medium/heavy gaming too.

http://www.comwiz.net.au/#systems - These are a little out of my price range, I don't like him THAT much, though I have used them before and quite liked the rig I bought off them eight or so years ago (since replaced).

The cheapest one on that page is $1000+ and your budget is $600? Can you point to other laptop/electrical/online stores in your area?

There's a few at that price range quoted above - have a browse through those.

He wants a desktop. I'm not sure what computer shops are local, I was recommended the above by a work colleague.

Is it worth buying a desktop online? I don't care about accessories as he can sort them out himself.

Looking for some laptop expertise please...

Im looking to buy the Dell XPS 15 7590, it’s currently £1,850 at John Lewis. I’m just wondering if, for the money it is a good quality laptop that will last a good few years (spec wise) or are there any much better alternatives?

When it comes to long battery life there's a trade-off in performance.

You won't do much better for travel.

You can buy a desktop online no problem.

depending on your budget order of preference is

They higher up on these lists the better:

Processor
https://dev1.notebook-check.com/index.php?id=2436

For the processor - single core performance is up for consideration too - https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html
The higher the better.

Graphics Card
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

And at least 8gb RAM

Note taken - now to show my embarassing lack of knowledge.

This laptop seems a little hard to locate online unless purchased through saveonlaptops or overclockers.

Has it been discontinued or is it just about to be released? And should I buy from box or is there somewhere else reputable that I should buy from?

Also, being overcautious (probably misreading) does this laptop come ready to use? I want to order today and get in the next few days that's all and the HDD not included confused me a little but I am assuming this is an extra as it has SSD built in?

Sorry to be a real pain but can you confirm please? Just so I can order quickly?

Thanks again, mate.

Both are reputable - and it says what it comes with:
Operating System    Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64-bit
So it is ready to rock and roll

One thing I would note is that it is a bit heavy
Weight    3-4 Kg (This Model 3.35 kg)

If you want something lighter then again there's a trade-off in parts

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/20MD0014UK-Lenovo-ThinkPad-P1_2426887.html
This has a much longer battery life and is much lighter for travel

It would be fine for FM.

Both overclockers and saveonlaptops are very reputable.

There's no reason that laptop wouldn't work for the next 6 years. I have a similar enough setup and run about the same amount of leagues of about 30-40 seasons.

It will run FM fine. I don't know what changes they plan to make to FM over the next 6 years, but I would imagine it wouldn't be too dramatic.

Do keep your laptop up to date with BIOS updates, firmware and other updates, drivers etc. It's very simple

Every laptop reseller has portals to keep up to date https://www.medion.com/gb/service/start/
Your service tag will be located on label on the underside of the laptop - and also probably accessible through the About Your PC.

You should also get a laptop cooler.

Take care of any laptop and it will last a long time.

Great, I think I am going to go for the HP Omen.

I just noticed that the 7na model is also available for another £250. Double the SSD and better graphics.

I am assuming the graphics wouldn't make a different for FM or for the relativity low level of video editing that I will do?

I guess not necessarily worth it for the doubled SSD either?

Hi, I see that you've recommended this one a lot: https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/FX504GD-E41275T-ASUS-TUF-FX504GD-E41275T_2458989.html

It's a bit more than I was hoping to spend but I could stretch to it if necessary. Is it substantially better than anything I could get for about £400-500? I'd mainly just be using it for web browsing, Netflix/Amazon Instant Video, word processing, and obviously FM. I don't really game on PCs other than FM, so would this machine be a bit overkill?

As an aside (apologies if this is too off-topic, just thought I'd throw it out there in case anyone can quickly answer) I have Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 installed on my current laptop - does anyone know if I can install this on a new laptop or would I need to re-purchase it? Because if I could use my current license it frees up a bit more money to spend on the actual laptop.

Thanks a lot.

That's a tough one - on paper you would think the i5 - but the i3 has a faster base speed.

I'd go with the i3 in this case.

Budget-wise - it's probably the best you can get.

It depends on what type of FM'er you are - do you play lots of leagues or lots of seasons, do you play with a small/medium/large databases? Do you play 3D matches?

Technically this would be fine

I don't tend to play more than five seasons, with maybe 10-15 leagues. Am quite tempted to just for for the £600 one just to give myself a fuller FM experience for once - would that handle a large database and a few more leagues quite easily? And, sorry if it's a daft question, but I presume the fact that it's a designated gaming laptop doesn't take anything away from its web browsing/streaming/word processing capacities? Thanks.

It will still be the same processor and amount of RAM so you won't get any gains for FM.

It does have a larger hard drive and a slightly better graphics card which will be better for photo/video editing.

If you can afford it then why not.

It's always best to go with what you can afford. If you can afford the £600 then that's what I recommend.

It will be fine for 5 seasons and 10-15 leagues with a large database.

It's completely up to you.

Thank again mate. I've got a laptop cooler that blows cold air underneath when I have the laptop I've got sat on it so I'll keep that when I get the new laptop. As you've got a similar setup I should be confident that the Medion laptop will last me around 40 seasons of play.

Will keep on top of the drivers and I'll read through the links you kindly posted

As well as the next few editions. I'll be getting the laptop this coming Friday.

It's always best to go with what you can afford. If you can afford the £600 then that's what I recommend.

It will be fine for 5 seasons and 10-15 leagues with a large database.

It's completely up to you.

Are either, or both, of these two exactly the same as the one on Save on Laptops? (https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/FX504GD-E41275T-ASUS-TUF-FX504GD-E41275T_2458989.html)

Seems it to me, but I'd hate to overlook something. I just seemingly managed to find it a bit cheaper, is all.

Hi my laptop has just died and I'm a bit of a computer noob tbh.

I need a new laptop that will run fm with plenty of leagues and run them quite fast. The opening post says the better the CPU the better the laptop will do that. I have looked on the link provided in the first post but the CPU list is just a bunch of numbers to me how do I know which one to look for?

My old laptop ran about 6 or 7 leagues with about 35k players and the performance rating was about 3.5/4 stars but ideally I would like something a lot better if it's possible.

I have about £400 to spend maybe a bit more if it's worth it. Ps. I'm not bothered about the graphics as I play on 2d (love them dots) 😂

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance

Edit.

I have found this laptop would anyone know how well this would run fm? How many leagues? What kind of database and what speed it might process fm?

Hi,

I have been looking at a laptop at Currys, but it has been out of stock for a while, and I want to consider alternatives. The laptop is MSI GF62.

My budget is around £1,200 but could increase this slightly for the right laptop, if a little increase in price makes a big difference in what I could buy. I have heard good things about MSI, but again, this isn't mandatory.

I'm happy for this to be an off the shelf model or something that is built, if it gets better value for money, but this isn't something I am confident in doing.

The main gaming purpose of this laptop will be FM/ Sims, but I want to future proof as well with the purchase, with the possibility to play games with more of a graphics focus than FM.

I would like the laptop to have a SSD and 16GB ram, minimum 256GB storage. I'm not sure how the Time Spy is calculated, but I was advised the one on the Currys laptop was pretty good, particularly for my budget & requirements.

For context of my FM needs, I know it isn't possible to state I can play x number of leagues on y spec, but ideally I would be able to have at a decent speed processing the following:

- Large database

- Average career length 8-15 years long, maybe up to 20.

- All English leagues

- 2 x Scottish, German

- 1 x Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch

- Any extras, but I am probably being unrealistic (Croatian, Belgian, etc.)

Any advice on this would be really appreciated. Thank you

Keep in mind it's refurbished - keep in mind it's low budget - keep in mind it's very much an entry level laptop

Thanks Smurf. Sorry to be a pain, but what extra benefits does that laptop have in terms of performance for the extra cost? I wouldn't want to step much above the £1,200 price range unless it is a significantly better laptop.

Better Processor
The 9750h processor is newer, it has a faster clock speed and a larger L3 Cache.

Better Graphics Card
It also has a better graphics card with the 2060 6gb

More Storage (double)
And it has double the SSD storage.

It has 6-7 hours batter life when not plugged in - where MSI has up to 4 hours (although if your laptop is to be plugged in most of the time then no need to worry about this.)

Thank you - so for future proofing, it sounds like it would be worth stretching the budget that bit more?

I presume there's not much of an improvement like this laptop, but closer to the budget? and also presume this retailer is pretty reputable, or do Currys sell a comparable version of this laptop?

Thanks again!

The retailer is fine.

It's a bit up on the budget - processor wise it will have much the same performance. It is that bit newer which is nice.

But for extra storage and a better graphics card - it's a solid price upgrade.

How about that - it's a 15 inch scree.

It has loads of SSD storage - and it also has normal hard drive storage.

Thanks Smurf,

Having checked the processors on the 2 you suggest they are a lot lower than the one what found. Will they run fm better even though they're lower on the list that is suggested on the first post.

Sorry I'm not good with computers and was solely basing my decision on finding the processor highest on the list I could afford. Are there other factors to consider?

It will still be the same processor and amount of RAM so you won't get any gains for FM.

It does have a larger hard drive and a slightly better graphics card which will be better for photo/video editing.

If you can afford it then why not.

Hi Smurf,

Thanks for your help - I ordered the HP Omen but have just been advised that they got the release dates wrong. I was hoping to use sooner as I am impatient aha.

I like the laptop a lot, the rbg keyboard, the performance, everything really.

But I was wondering, are there any alternatives that have recently been released or are currently available? One thing I don't want to do, is lose the current battery life or the current level of performance.

I only want to switch up and go for something else if it is an upgrade - I don't want to be impatient and get something not as good.

If it isn't worthwhile then don't worry. I would prefer to wait (however annoying) if it means compromising on the ram, ssd, keyboard etc etc. I am happy to pay a little more if it is a significant upgrade,

Thanks!

You are right - I was checking the speeds of the processors - whereas technically the one you have is better

Below is how how they are ranked - and I have to admit - I don't know why I did that. I was drawn to the MHZ speed where the AMD base speed is impressive at 3000mhz and the AMD 7410 is 2200mhz.

The 8265u is only 1600 mhz - and FM requires 2200 minimum.

The TDP is 15 for the i5 - and  it's higher for the AMD -  meaning the AMD is better at handling the heat.

But overall the i5 is better - if you can get it to perform at the turbo speeds it has there.

But typically when the TDP is low, and a heavy processing application like FM is used, the TDP will keep the processor at the lower speeds.

Yes - overall the i5 is better - but the AMD FX 9830P - I think would be better for FM based on the speed.

The 2nd graphs are all about single core speed - which FM thrives on - and the difference is very little between 1 and 2 there (i5 and 9830p).

It's up to you.

Your budget is low. But go for what you think is best.

Hi Smurf, thanks for spending so much time helping people.

Apologies if this has been covered in the thread previously, but Ive been looking at this

https://www.box.co.uk/20LB0007UK-Lenovo-ThinkPad-P52s-Ultrabook-Workstati_2494899.html

and this

https://www.razer.com/gb-en/gaming-laptops/razer-blade-stealth-v4

Which of these would you recommend or do you have alternative suggestions at this price point? I never run more than 4-5 leagues.
