It will work - but it won't be great - I'd only really recommend something in around 600 quid. 

But if that's your budget then go for it.

Just seen a review on the HP one, not sure if I'm comfortable with the hinge being in the middle. What would you recommend for a budget of £900? Ideally want an i7 and 16gb ram. Looking for longevity and to play the next few editions.cheers

The laptop lid is flimsy, according to reviews, and can bend, but it doesn't affect the screen, the reviewers reckon there is a bit of protection between the lid and the screen. 

It can also get a bit hot due to it's TDP settings.

8gb Ram is plenty. But 16gb is no harm whatsoever.

FM will use RAM for some functions, but it is a lot to do with the processor.

Performance wise at that price bracket you are in the i5 8300 h and the i7 8750h range.

The latter being the better processor overall, but for FM the two have similar enough single core performance, which FM will want to use a lot of. 

You cant upgrade the processor or the graphics card easily in a laptop... but upgrading ram and hard drive is pretty simple.

Hi Smurf, 

Hoping you can help. I've been playing fm for a long time and have looked on and off for an upgrade for a few years but never really know where to start. Ideally I would like something decent that I will be able to use for a good number of years to justify the cost although hard to predict future specs... 

Main things for me are (laptop, windows); 

Doesn't get to hot, especially as I sit and have on my lap a lot. Maybe vents on keyboard is beneficial?

Quiet, with long battery life (10hrs?)

I would like to play on a large database with a lot of countries without the game taking an age to progress and without the laptop heating up as it cannot cope.

Playing in 3D would be nice as I dont usually do this but not completely essential. 

Decent memory to store videos etc from the go pro/camera.

Budget: £1400 tops. Ideally £800-1200. 

I know this is an fm laptop discussion mate but I was hoping that if you had a couple of options, you may be able to point me in 1 direction based on the other things I am looking for.

I know the 8250 is better overall but runs at 1.6 whereas the 8130 base is 2.2

I only say this as I like to use the laptop when I travel on the train and by air for long haul.

When it comes to long battery life there's a trade-off in performance. 

You won't do much better for travel.

One thing I would note is that it is a bit heavy
Weight    3-4 Kg (This Model 3.35 kg)
 

If you want something lighter then again there's a trade-off in parts

There's no reason that laptop wouldn't work for the next 6 years. I have a similar enough setup and run about the same amount of leagues of about 30-40 seasons.

It will run FM fine. I don't know what changes they plan to make to FM over the next 6 years, but I would imagine it wouldn't be too dramatic. 

Do keep your laptop up to date with BIOS updates, firmware and other updates, drivers etc. It's very simple

You should also get a laptop cooler. 

Take care of any laptop and it will last a long time.

I am assuming the graphics wouldn't make a different for FM or for the relativity low level of video editing that I will do?

Because if I could use my current license it frees up a bit more money to spend on the actual laptop.

Budget-wise - it's probably the best you can get. 

It depends on what type of FM'er you are - do you play lots of leagues or lots of seasons, do you play with a small/medium/large databases? Do you play 3D matches?

Am quite tempted to just for for the £600 one just to give myself a fuller FM experience for once - would that handle a large database and a few more leagues quite easily? And, sorry if it's a daft question, but I presume the fact that it's a designated gaming laptop doesn't take anything away from its web browsing/streaming/word processing capacities? Thanks.

It will still be the same processor and amount of RAM so you won't get any gains for FM.

It does have a larger hard drive and a slightly better graphics card which will be better for photo/video editing.

If you can afford it then why not.

It's always best to go with what you can afford. If you can afford the £600 then that's what I recommend. 

It will be fine for 5 seasons and 10-15 leagues with a large database.

It's completely up to you.

There's no reason that laptop wouldn't work for the next 6 years. I have a similar enough setup and run about the same amount of leagues of about 30-40 seasons.

It will run FM fine. I don't know what changes they plan to make to FM over the next 6 years, but I would imagine it wouldn't be too dramatic. 

Do keep your laptop up to date with BIOS updates, firmware and other updates, drivers etc. It's very simple

You should also get a laptop cooler. 

Take care of any laptop and it will last a long time.

Thank again mate. I've got a laptop cooler that blows cold air underneath when I have the laptop I've got sat on it so I'll keep that when I get the new laptop. As you've got a similar setup I should be confident that the Medion laptop will last me around 40 seasons of play.

Hi my laptop has just died and I'm a bit of a computer noob tbh. 

I need a new laptop that will run fm with plenty of leagues and run them quite fast. The opening post says the better the CPU the better the laptop will do that. I have looked on the link provided in the first post but the CPU list is just a bunch of numbers to me how do I know which one to look for? 

My old laptop ran about 6 or 7 leagues with about 35k players and the performance rating was about 3.5/4 stars but ideally I would like something a lot better if it's possible. 

I have about £400 to spend maybe a bit more if it's worth it. Ps. I'm not bothered about the graphics as I play on 2d (love them dots) 😂

Can anyone help?

Hi,

I have been looking at a laptop at Currys, but it has been out of stock for a while, and I want to consider alternatives. The laptop is MSI GF62.

My budget is around £1,200 but could increase this slightly for the right laptop, if a little increase in price makes a big difference in what I could buy. I have heard good things about MSI, but again, this isn't mandatory.

I'm happy for this to be an off the shelf model or something that is built, if it gets better value for money, but this isn't something I am confident in doing.

The main gaming purpose of this laptop will be FM/ Sims, but I want to future proof as well with the purchase, with the possibility to play games with more of a graphics focus than FM. 

I would like the laptop to have a SSD and 16GB ram, minimum 256GB storage. I'm not sure how the Time Spy is calculated, but I was advised the one on the Currys laptop was pretty good, particularly for my budget & requirements. 

For context of my FM needs, I know it isn't possible to state I can play x number of leagues on y spec, but ideally I would be able to have at a decent speed processing the following:

- Large database

- Average career length 8-15 years long, maybe up to 20.

- All English leagues

- 2 x Scottish, German

- 1 x Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch

- Any extras, but I am probably being unrealistic (Croatian, Belgian, etc.)

Any advice on this would be really appreciated. Thank you

Thanks Smurf. Sorry to be a pain, but what extra benefits does that laptop have in terms of performance for the extra cost? I wouldn't want to step much above the £1,200 price range unless it is a significantly better laptop.

Better Processor
The 9750h processor is newer, it has a faster clock speed and a larger L3 Cache.

Better Graphics Card
It also has a better graphics card with the 2060 6gb

More Storage (double)
And it has double the SSD storage. 

It has 6-7 hours batter life when not plugged in - where MSI has up to 4 hours (although if your laptop is to be plugged in most of the time then no need to worry about this.)

The retailer is fine. 

It's a bit up on the budget - processor wise it will have much the same performance. It is that bit newer which is nice.

But for extra storage and a better graphics card - it's a solid price upgrade.

Having checked the processors on the 2 you suggest they are a lot lower than the one what found. Will they run fm better even though they're lower on the list that is suggested on the first post. 

Sorry I'm not good with computers and was solely basing my decision on finding the processor highest on the list I could afford. Are there other factors to consider?

Thanks for your help - I ordered the HP Omen but have just been advised that they got the release dates wrong. I was hoping to use sooner as I am impatient aha.

I like the laptop a lot, the rbg keyboard, the performance, everything really.

 

But I was wondering, are there any alternatives that have recently been released or are currently available? One thing I don't want to do, is lose the current battery life or the current level of performance.

I only want to switch up and go for something else if it is an upgrade - I don't want to be impatient and get something not as good.

 

If it isn't worthwhile then don't worry. I would prefer to wait (however annoying) if it means compromising on the ram, ssd, keyboard etc etc. I am happy to pay a little more if it is a significant upgrade,

You are right - I was checking the speeds of the processors - whereas technically the one you have is better 

Below is how how they are ranked - and I have to admit - I don't know why I did that. I was drawn to the MHZ speed where the AMD base speed is impressive at 3000mhz and the AMD 7410 is 2200mhz.

The 8265u is only 1600 mhz - and FM requires 2200 minimum.

The TDP is 15 for the i5 - and  it's higher for the AMD -  meaning the AMD is better at handling the heat. 

But overall the i5 is better - if you can get it to perform at the turbo speeds it has there. 

But typically when the TDP is low, and a heavy processing application like FM is used, the TDP will keep the processor at the lower speeds. 

Yes - overall the i5 is better - but the AMD FX 9830P - I think would be better for FM based on the speed. 

The 2nd graphs are all about single core speed - which FM thrives on - and the difference is very little between 1 and 2 there (i5 and 9830p).

It's up to you. 

Your budget is low. But go for what you think is best.
