Wow!. Dec 2036

Before this game I was expecting a complete hammering if I'm honest and I had decided that if we conceded something silly like 10 goals or similar then I was going to post the info here to sort of highlight that everything in these saves doesn't go well the whole time.

Then we beat them 1-0.

Aha was not aware of that. I thought of Burnley because you presumably plan on keeping your job if you get relegated, much like Sean Dyche did.

Cheers lads.

While it was a terrific result, the brief stats don't tell the full story.

They had 5 shots on target, (the same as us), despite attempting 17 shots, (9 more than us). The main difference is that they hit the woodwork on no less than 3 separate occasions and took 6 long shots to our 2.

Let's have a look at the shots here.

beb135ddcf5816aa00564d2bbb3d4fd1.png

This is their shots. The shot from their own half was after our GK stuck his shot from a direct free-kick into the wall and they took a shot from their own half that was thankfully blocked.

The blue arrows show they hit the post twice and cross-bar once.

There are only 3 shots between the posts and inside the area though, (1 hit the post and 2 saved).

114b246587d51c40b71e4789becb931f.png

This is our shots.

5b8a87f111341c84f88fc9ae7a2a17e6.png

Of course we were lucky, but we had 2 shots between the posts inside the area and managed to score from them. They had 3 shots from between the posts inside the area and didn't.

Unlucky.

They are PSG and I am playing as a Basque only French side (with a few Spaniards), and am largely Youth based. It's also our 1st season in Ligue 1. Excuse me if I don't shed a tear. :kriss:

Here’s a tale for you mate. My dad reckons he was on Deepdale watching PNE vs West Brom years ago, and their fans were in the top of the old West Stand (Now the Tom Finney Stand).

There used to be wooden benches up there instead of seats And their fans spent the majority of the match jumping up and down on them. Some of them starting singing Boing Boing Baggies Baggies until they were all at it.

Could be Bollocks like lol

Still got a fighting chance Jimbo. Unlike the one season I had in the Premier League with Newcastle Town on FM11. I just about avoided doing a Derby by finishing above Derby (ironic huh) and still something like 18 points off safety. :D

Fantastic save, it was a pleasure following this from the start, now I'm eagerly awaiting every update you post to see what's going to happen.

Could you please post the 5-2-3 formation that you used to use, I thinking of using that formation for the team I'm about to manage and I could sure use the inspiration!

Thanks. I work on rotating shifts so haven't played that much in the last week but am about to crank the game up right now.

This is the current formation I'm using.

The RMD(a) has been a few different things in the past and actually other players usually play as a W(s) and 1 in particular used to play as a WTM(s).

The BBM(s) used to be a 2nd VOL(a), and I'm considering reverting to that in an attempt to stay in Ligue 1.

The full-back roles have changed quite regularly over the seasons. It's 1 thing having full backs on WB(a), but it's no good if they just have the attacking ability we need and even more so if we actually need them to defend more than they are currently asked to do.

The P(a) was initially a TM(s) and then a TM(a), but it just wasn't working and it was better to force a very obvious TM into a P role for the good of the team. I think I also toyed with an AF(a), but for whatever reason I reverted to P(a) again.

The win against PSG was huge for us. Not because it was against PSG, but simply because it gave us a much-needed 3 points that keeps us in touch with Strasbourg and Montpellier who are outside the relegation zone.

That doesn't suggest that they have had 5 0-0's in a row. It just states that they have had 5 draws in a row.

Updates?

In terms of thread updates, I have been really busy at work recently and not had much time to play FM. I'm playing now though and should have some time to play next week as well.

In terms of game updates, I've just had (29d) Tristan Albert (Unamb) * score a hat-trick, but the 3rd goal was a penalty and you all know that not only do my GK's take pens, but I have also set the instructions that a player on a hat-trick does NOT get the option to take the pen. It has worked well all the way through this save, (after I forgot to set it at the very start), but after the recent updates it must have been reset for some reason. It makes me wonder what else has been reset because this is a tactical instruction and is important to me.

This picture shows that I only have GK's on the list of penalty takers and that I have not ticked the option to let players on a hat-trick take a pen.

4e8c6acf11071e0e76682d99a758e293.png

This has been working all game, (17.5 seasons), and now suddenly it's not working.

I suppose I just need to check that the GK wasn't injured or sent off, (because someone was sent off but I didn't think it was the GK).....

Nope. (23e) Bouchez (F.Det) * played the whole game and was the only player on the pitch at any time who was a penalty taker and I clearly haven't let player on a hat-trick nick goals off him so answers on a postcard please to, (oh, sorry, some of you are young. Postcards are like the olden day equivalent of emails. They just take 3 days to arrive but look nicer). SI Games at SI Towers.

I might be joking but I am FAR from happy! :kriss:

Ugh, that's pretty frustrating...

There are sadly still a few quirks in the set piece tactical settings and unfortunately this appears to be another to add to the list.

I have had a few issues with the 'taker' and 'stay back' settings for corners, with the game arbitrarily deciding on occasion that one of my fullbacks - one of the three designated to stay back - will be the one to take the corner despite both sides being designated as the corresponding winger. On occasions when leading, the AI will leave 3 players up top for a counter and it can be frustrating to see you've only got 2/3 designated players back (with the other taking the kick) and being outnumbered. I've only seen two goals against as a result but as it's the taker logic that seems faulty I wonder if it's cut from the same cloth as your issue here? It was (the corner taker issue) raised as a bug back in 19.1 and have seen it raised in several other places so can only hope it's fixed soon.

Far from ideal but some small comfort that you were still (comfortably) victorious - looking forward to seeing Bouchez add to his tally soon though! :)

I played through to the end of the month yesterday and although I think we lost 6 in a row, (after drawing the game after the Barca win), we won and then drew the last 2 games of the month to leave us still in the relegation zone on 18 pts, but only by goal difference).

I have had a few crashes during saving since the most recent update and to be honest it's put me off playing. Really frustrating.

Crash updates

I've had another couple of crashes and so have been working on a solution and the boffins in the Bugs Forum have somehow worked out that just by saving the savegame in a different location, (desktop rather than original location for example), seems to solve the issue. (It certainly has in my problem). Either way, we are back in business. :kriss:

[Edit]

Well that didn't last long. :(

I have a feeling that we scored a hat-trick in the 9th Round of the French Cup the previous time I got through to the end of the month without a crash, but this time we only managed a 1-0 win, (but are still in the hat so who cares).

The 1st time around we lost against both Strasbourg and Nice but won against Toulouse and Dijon so we are actually 4 points better off than we might have been. Apologies for this but win lose or draw I just accept the results the 2nd time around whether they are better or worse.

Youth Intake Day. Feb 2037

"Has the potential to be one of the most gifted players to come through the youth ranks in recent years" suggests that we have a small number of high potential players.

e09df3d67d9a949623cb41834833c43b.png

When we look at the squad list below, then the suggestion, (with 2x 5.0 players), is that we have 2 potential "stars".

3532049545eac7cf5c489184ea56cd02.png

(27a) Théo (F.Amb) (2037) *.

At first glance you see a 5.0 PA centre-half, but after further inspection you see a player that is only 5'9" and looks to have a LOT of improving to do before he is in contention.

ef190523d5a6d8dbf10efef3bb8e131a.png

(27b) Jon Jiménez (F.Det) *.

I was thinking that we might struggle with regards to the production of GK's via the Academy and I was all set to go and buy a Spanish Basque GK that had come through an Academy in Spain. I've been pleasantly surprised though as 1st (23e) Bouchez (F.Det) * and then (36c) Schmidt (F.Loyal) * and now (37b) Jon Jiménez (F.Det) * have come through our Academy.

3e627a5bfd7015d0028bc75bca8654e8.png

While (23e) Bouchez (F.Det) * is the 1st choice #1, it's clear to see that the future lies with youngsters (36c) Schmidt (F.Loyal) * and (37b) Jon Jiménez (F.Det) *. When you also take into account that back-up GK's such as (34o) Javier Agirre (Unamb)(31g) Nathan García (Bal) and (28a) Maxence (Unamb) (2028) * have the potential to be as good as our current 1st choice GK (23e) Bouchez (F.Det) *, then we shouldn't really have any problems in this area. If there is, then I can of course go out and sign a Basque/Spaniard.

I thought I would post my best players, (by CA), to show you the level we are at now, because there has been some improvement.

GK.

a3bcbdc234c9769ab02b1fc40acfa3ad.png

(23e) Bouchez (F.Det) *.

He is valued at £1.1M and at 28 years old still has a good few years left in him yet. His positioning could do with being higher, but of course you can't directly train positioning in a GK, (which seems strange to me when you can train the positioning of a centre-half). While he is certainly not Ligue 1 level, I think he looks decent, (and would look much better if his positioning was in double figures).

7bb81eaec376a4d953b84fcf495a61b1.png

DL/WBL. This includes players who can play at both DL and WBL, but obviously some of these, (such as (30b) Jiménez (F.Sport) * at the top of the list), are actually more suited to playing elsewhere.

c3504ca2c74a1d2257167f0bd31e96e0.png

(26a) Núñez (Bal) (2026) *.

DR/WBR

(25a) Martínez (Bal) (2025) *.

DC.

c7ea3e80d8ca62797b2e99a75593e7f1.png

(33a) Ramírez (Bal) (2033) *.

He's the top-ranked centre-half, (by CA remember), and he is still only 18 years old so that certainly suggests that the future is bright.

c4f2577b00ad72b4339c85b0584a0c22.png

(27c) Gonzalo (F.Pro).

He is actually a "natural" right back, but I see him more as a centre-half, (where our need is greater).

4ffef4ad5492fa3e83920b6f6a22c83f.png

DM/MC

f0d1106f1ab0242090e752cd6cade4a6.png

The first thing that I notice from the above picture is that we have a Basque/Spaniard in on trial here so let's have a look at him first.

Ángel Merino ((Bas) (Fickle).

While his CA suggests that he should be in contention to be signed, the reality is that he is more suited to a more attacking role and doesn't really fit in with how we play.

db366229181ab2d05034bbe7834d37fb.png

(34b) Mikel Ochoa (Bal) *.

To me he looks more like a short centre-half than a DM, but that actually works quite well in the role of A(d) that he is asked to play.

8d201e80e1d45b2aec4acff32c55661b.png

(35a) Iker (F.Pro) (2035) *.

(34a) Merino (LHeart) (2034) *.

Thanks @turnip Hopefully the last post will show that we are just a little bit better than you thought, but yes, I would agree that we are pretty under-cooked and very much a PA based team rather than a CA based team.

Just 1 win from a busy month where we played 6 games might sound poor, and while I was gutted that we didn't win against bottom side FCSM, I was delighted to finish the month with a point against 7th placed Bordeaux

We are 5 places and 8 points clear of the relegation zone as the 3 teams in the zone collected just 3 points, 1 point and 1 point respectively in the last 5 games. Our 5 points in our last 5 games seems huge by comparison.

International call-ups. Mar 2037.

I know to may of you will think getting any International call-ups is no big deal deal and they are probably ten a penny in your save, but when you consider where we came from, with the facilities we started off with, the Nation we are playing in and who we are competing against, any International call-ups, (even these such as U19 and U20), is a significant achievement. In many saves, the 1st call-ups you get are from smaller Nations where a player might have a 2nd Nationality, but here we are obviously restricted to just France, because Newgens don't seem to be produced with more than 2 Nationalities, (unlike real life for example where I am born English to a Scottish Mother and an Irish Father. If I moved to France and in particular the Basque part of France, and I had a son born there, then he would have Spanish as his primary Nationality, and then Basque and English as secondary Nationalities, but he would also be eligible to play for Scotland and Ireland via his grand-parents. That's the next advancement I would like to see in game. I think it works elsewhere. I just don't think it works where a secondary National like Basque is involved. It's like a pre-set that can't be changed. There are never any non French/Basque players that come through the intake where you would expect to sometimes see Spanish Basque players on occasion for example.

(35a) Iker (F.Pro) (2035) * has now evolved into (35a) Iker (Bal) (2035) * and he was the 1st player to receive an International call-up at the club.

He has represented France U19's on 4 occasions.

Unbeaten. Mar 2037.

To go and win away to 11th placed Metz is brilliant and while I really wish we could have followed it up with a win at home to Montpellier, I can't say that I'm unhappy with a win and a draw from the month.

It leaves us 13th in Ligue 1, 5 places and 7 points ahead of the drop zone with 7 games remaining. If you had told me that we would have been in this position in our 1st season in Ligue 1, I wouldn't have dreamed it possible.

So close. Apr 2037.

356f518cd833e6f31814acbb50819bd4.png

You might have noticed me commenting previously about rotating the whole squad for a game in which I'm unlikely to win. I don't usually do this if there is a week or so between fixtures, but where there is only 3 or so days then it's an especially effective tactic. Not only does it allow 1st choice players more time to recover and regain fitness levels, but it is also an added opportunity to blood youngsters. In these "rotated squads" I don's select the 2nd choice players or 3rd choice players, I simply select the whole squad based on PA, (or PPA is more accurate), and where the player with the best PA is also the 1st choice in that position, (doesn't happen often in this save but does occasionally), then I select the 2nd best player by PA.

I opted to do this for the Marseille game, not because there were just a few days apart, but because I was properly targeting the Havre game as a potential 3 pointer. They were in the bottom 3, we were at home and in decent form and the fixtures was sandwiched in between away games against Marseille and PSG which, with the best will in the World, we were unlikely to get anything from.

I rotated the squad completely for the Marseille game and despite fielding a starting line-up with a total of 85 appearances between them, we somehow came out with a 0-0 draw. I know we have beaten PSG earlier in the season, (I still can't get my head around that), but I think that was more about them under-estimating us and this was more about our youth slowly coming through after the most recent facility updates. The PSG result felt like a bit of a freak result at the time, (and was), but this Marseille game felt like it was more realistic and something more deserved. Yeah we got battered and they had 14 shots on target to our 4, but the score at the end of the day was 0-0 and that will do me fine. The MotM award went to our left back but how a GK makes 14 saves in keeping a clean sheet and only scored 7.2 I have no idea.

That we came out on top narrowly against Havre was even more pleasing. I was happy to get stuffed in both games either side just so long as we collected 3 points against Havre.

The 4 points in April mean that we are 6 positions and 11 points clear of Havre and Strasbourg in 18th and 19th with 4 games to play. (Now you can see why the win against Havre was so important because had we drawn the gap would be only 8 points and had we lost the gap would be 5 points. As it is we just require 3 points from our remaining 4 games to guarantee safety.

Our remaining games are as follows.

Although 3 of the 4 games are at home, Nantes and Rennes are both above us in the league and Reims will be fighting tooth and nail to avoid the drop. Toulouse are below us and not great at home so that might be more points available.

If I can secure the 3 needed points early, then I will select the starting XI for the remaining games of the season purely by PA, (or PPA is more accurate).

Safety. May 2037

86e63dd0ca891a77c2ace5419ceb565f.png

We may have been battered 1-0 at home to Nantes and we may have sneaked an undeserved 0-0 at home to Rennes, but that single point was enough to secure our safety, WITH 2 GAMES TO SPARE!!!!!

Can you believe it?

This is a proper big achievement. I'm really rather chuffed. :)

We are somehow up into 11th in the league, (which is quite frankly ridiculous), and if we just had a decent pacey striker then I think we would be even higher. I really expected us to come straight back down this season and even if we ignore the ridiculous result against PSG, we have picked up points regularly throughout the season and it has looked likely that we would avoid the drop comfortably for a while, (but I wasn't counting my chickens).

There is no info given on the league rules page with regards to prize money, (there will be some prize money? Right?) but in any case I will select squads based on PA rather than CA  for the remaining 2 games, (so don't expect too many more points).

Either way, we are in Ligue 1 again next season.

That's definitely your most impressive achievement of the save so far!

That league table with the big drops from Bordeaux to Nantes and Nantes to Rennes kinda reminds me of the Premier League last year where there wasn't really a mid-table, more a top 6, 7th, 8th, and everyone else was two bad results away from being "in the mix" for relegation.

Well done.

Cheers lads. Getting there seemed like an achievement in the end, but only because it had been such a slog earlier in the save.

If we can just turn some of out PA into CA then we will really start to kick on I think .

New Stadium. May 2037

In all my years playing FM, I have never ever had a stadium named after me.

d2eaab4642ac2b54e4d9a0109ea1e2d9.png

It would seem that this isn't going to change anytime soon and I am likely to have to wait until FM20 to have another go. :( I really thought this was going to be my time.

3e447fdd15c874e47ff626cdccd8b0a1.png

The previous stadium was named after Didier Deschamps

The new stadium is going to be named after Guillaume Lesec, (who was my 1st goal-scoring GK who scored 78 career goals for us), so to be fair I can have few complaints over him being selected ahead of me.

With regards to the finances of the deal I'm a little confused. :kriss:

The new stadium will cost about £30.5M.
We will get only £350,000 for selling the old stadium, (giving us a net cost of £30,150,000).
We have secured a loan of £30M to help finance the project, (leaving us a net cost of £150,000).
Additional funding has been secured via stadium sponsorship worth £15.25M, (giving us a net surplus of £15,100,000).

I'm not a maths expert but this seems to suggest that I'm going to have £15M+ in my back pocket after the stadium is built.

Either that or in 2037, football clubs have started to expect that the cost will spiral and there will be delays, meaning something positive has come out of the Tottenham stadium saga this season
