I'm curious about managing in Sweden, where they get a penalty for each division between you, but given my struggles with breaking down parked busses on this FM it probably wouldn't end well for me.

When you say "get a penalty" do you mean that they "take a penalty from the penalty spot" or something else. I have never heard of that. is that replicated in the game?

If France does have it, then it's not replicated accurately in the game.

We are in Ligue 2 and played Montpellier, (who are in Ligue 1), in the 11th Round of the Cup. We had to play away from home.

FCSM of Ligue 2 were also away to Ligue 1 Havre AC.

My bad, just checked and its only for teams separated by two divisions or more. So if you look back to before you were in Ligue 2 you should find you were always at home in the cup.

Yeah, taken from the penalty spot, or so I've heard. Although some cursory googling appears I may have misremembered and its only the regional Orebro cup tournament, which would only be in FM if you had a custom db I think. Still pretty cool though.

Awards. Jun 2035.

Manager of the Season. I was awarded Ligue 2 Manager of the Season for the 1st time. If we get promoted next season I would hope to win it again.

Ligue 2 Award winners. In France there is outfield Player/Star of the Year and then GK  Star of the Year. Whatever you want to call it, (23e) Bouchez (F.Det) * is it. He kept 17 clean sheets in the league, (and 3 more in Cups), as well as scoring 8 goals.

(23e) Bouchez (F.Det) *.

He's really not brilliant, (either as a GK or in terms of attributes to score goals at the other end), but he's doing fine for me at the moment. He's rated as 3.0 CA and 3.0 PA at the age of 27, so it would be good to get a replacement through in the next couple of seasons.

(25b) Gork Intxausti (Sport) *.

He's actually a very limited player but he somehow scored 13 goals in all competitions this season from the Segundo Volante role, although he occasionally fills in as the Anchor.

Parent Club. Jun 2035.

My plan was to get a nice little deal going with the likes of Atletic Bilbao, get some cash from them and nick some of their youngsters and then on loan after contract expiry, but it didn't quite go to plan.

I will be rejecting all 3 suggestions, (unless any of them have some Basque players), and only Guingamp do and he's too good for us so there is no point pursuing this at this stage. We will have to come back once we are allowed to pick ourselves.

More penalty woes. Aug 2035.

The way this save works means that it's a very long-term save and this lessens the importance of individual results. The fact that I use an IR button lessens again the importance of an individual result. It is less about the last match and more about the overall long-term development. As a result I'm not 100% sure if we had lost on penalties before the Playoff defeat yesterday.

61b06c796d0bc403311be471e47e13a1.png

I also mentioned yesterday, that while I was losing at FM on penalties to Stade Lavallois MFC on FM19, Barnet FC were losing to AFC Fylde in the Quarter Finals of the FA Trophy, (to add insult to injury).

As if that wasn't enough, the very 1st Cup game I play today and guess what happens? Yep. We lose on penalties, again!

We missed all 3 penalties as Troyes converted all 3 of theirs.

Jul & Aug 2035.

286a3b38a93098fbb27a0ccfc652ea55.png

Pre-season went as pre-season goes and although we started with a whimper against Tours, we at least managed a draw, and 2 injury time goals gave us an undeserved win against Saint Etienne and we pushed on from there to finish the month by smashing 6 goals past Valenciennes

We are 1 of 5 undefeated teams at the end of August and if we are a little more consistent during the early phase of the season I have no doubt that we can at least challenge for 2nd/3rd position if not the title itself.

1st International call-up. Aug 2035.

d52544edcd78b2e388effff367aa1e41.png

I'm not complaining. I'm REALLY not complaining, but (35a) Iker (F.Pro) (2035) * has been called up to the U20's squad. He's 15 and is yet to play a senior game for the club.  In fact he's only made 2 sub appearances for the U19's.

cd3bdf5369d4be39b4070bc409c9e168.png

I'm not really sure what the strategy is as far as U20 squad selection is. There are players at 19 and 20, but there are also 3 15 year olds. It's all a bit strange if you ask me. :herman:

Just now, Thebaker said:

I suspect that the game picks on ability which looks good for the future, he can't be far from a first game. Have you had a international callup before?

I think he's good enough to be called up to the U19's, but don't you do that first?

No, this is the 1st call-up.

He is good enough. He's ranked as our best player by CA right now and not able to play yet.

I think he was ranked 5th best when he came through the intake.

Sept 2035

17cc22da080ab20e6283808572bdd01c.png

We conceded in the 92nd minute against Bourg en Bresse as a result of my GK playing Tikka Takka football with an indirect free-kick and then in the following game against QRM, as well as having a penalty saved, we conceded in the 89th and 92nd minutes to cough up all 3 points in what was a disaster of a month.

The less said about the 0-6 loss the better, other than that the players offered to reimburse the fans for the cost if their tickets which I think is a first for me.

An almost perfect month gets us back on track and back in the Playoffs. We are just a single point behind Paris FC in 3rd and 3 points off Strasbourg and Dijon FCO in 1st and 2nd. Well within striking distance.

Unlucky on the various penalty pains.

I don't think I would have been too bothered had Barnet not also lost on pens at the weekend. I thought I had little chance in the Playoffs unless I finish 3rd so to lose wasn't really a surprise. Other than Barnet losing, the only bit about the penalty losses that hurts at all is the fact that despite my GK's being the only penalty takers that I have set, and a GK takes every penalty in normal time, SI still haven't managed to code it so that the GK takes the 1st penalty in a shoot-out. As it happens it didn't really matter in the Playoffs anyway because the GK still took 2 penalties because it went on so long, AND he missed one too.

After losing 3 out of 4 games in September and only winning 2 of 6 in the same month, we have now gone unbeaten in 8 games, winning 7 of them. The only problem is that while Angers lost their last game, the top 4 have remained unbeaten and Tours have actually won the last 6 league games on the bounce.

Meaningless awards. Dec 2035.

It's great that we win anything, but these are completely worthless.

The team that won the league didn't win the award.

The team that finished Runners Up in the league didn't win the award.

The team that finished 3rd in the league, beat us in the Final of the Playoffs and then lost to Ligue 1 FC Metz didn't win the award.

No. We won the award. :(

Dijon & Tours are still right at it, but the form of ourselves and Strasbourg has dropped off a little.

We are level on points with 3rd placed Strasbourg and 3rd is an improvement on last season and our minimum aim for this season. If we finish 3rd I think we will win the Playoffs.

I rotated the squad a little too much in the Cup and we paid the price against lower League opposition. 3 losses on penalties in 3 real-time days suggest that (a) we are not very lucky at the moment or (b) we are rubbish at pens. (Or both).

We conceded a really poor injury time goal again Gaz. Ajaccio before collecting all 3 points in a one-sided affair against Valenciennes to leave us still in the playoffs but 2 points behind Strasbourg in 3rd and 1 point behind Angers in 4th. Remember, we really need to finish 3rd and that's the goal this season.

We've managed to hit form at just the right time and 4 wins out of 4 this month has seen us rocket up the table.

Just as we have taken 15 from 15 points available over the last 5 games, Tours have faltered dropping 7 points, angers have dropped 5 and Dijon are clearly not cutting the mustard dropping 10 from a possible 15 point haul. Strasbourg, who I was looking to over-haul in 3rd a month or so ago have lost 7 points during this period and now occupy the last playoff spot.

Goal of the Month

It's always nice to score goal of the month and even more so when it's your GK, but the opposition GK needs to look at himself here surely. That said, it's a looooooong way out.

Youth Day. Mar 2036.

fedd805cd90858794429eb325c4b229f.png

It's another "Golden Generation", but aren't they all nowadays? I think I would prefer to swap a few golden generations for a single generational talent. Is that line still in the game? :kriss:

de162561a765da822042d2a4500cd275.png

The 1st thing that jumps out at me is that we have 3x 5.0 PA players.

There is even a little bit of CA on show, (a 2.0 and a 1.5).

We have some high (Det) values, (20, 14 & 17).

We also have some low (Det) values, (5, 4, 4, 3, 4, 6 & 4). :thdn: There are more low than high. :thdn:

We have a decent GK, (which I have been waiting with much anticipation for a few years for now).

There is no visible (Pro) mentioned in the personalities. :thdn:

There is obviously no son. :thdn: (It's the very 1st thing I look for in every intake). I have never produced a son at a "good" Nation, (just San Marion and Iceland for me and neither have been good). I'm hoping that if I get a French son, (especially at this stage onwards in the save, there might be a reasonable chance of him being decent.

There are a few players who appear to have low PA and who also have low (Det). It's a bit of a gamble but as I'm still trying to manually manipulate the squad (Det) levels, I think I will be releasing them rather than signing them to youth contracts. Working upwards from the bottom, (36p) Asier Jiménez. (Unamb)(36o) Jesús Pereda. (Unamb) & (36l) Samuel Remy. (L.Det) will be released, but after careful consideration (36j) Gilles Rouyer. (Unamb) will be kept on.

2 of the top 4 players by PA are strikers.  That's ok but what I REALLY want is for just 1 of them to be VERY good. We've been short a REALLY good striker all the way through this save and although (29d) Tristan Albert (Unamb) * has been more than decent for us, it's been hard trying to shoe-horn such a natural Target Man into a poacher role. With an AF and a P coming through I'm hoping that these 2 will lead the line for years to come. If I look at what I have on the production line at striker between now and then, (I haven't a clue if we have anything actually, then what I see is this.

34a36cf5352c7c931b73789febd2b857.png

21 year old (29d) Tristan Albert (Unamb) * might have scored 54 goals in 90(6) senior appearances, but he's not the long-term answer at all.

(34e) David Saizar (Bal)(30b) Jiménez (F.Sport) *(31f) Calderón (F.Sport) are all wide players and you can see that at the beginning of this season I decided that I didn't have enough up front and arranged for Grégory Guegan (BAS) (F.Loyal) to come in on loan as cover. It's perhaps surprising to see 16 year old (34d) Joseba Mayo (Unamb) waiting in the wings with his 5.0 PA not catching my eye at all. Maybe I was a little put off by his (Det) and workrate, (and he is still very raw), but he will certainly get games next season. So with him and the 2 new intakes, I think things are starting to look a little better up front now.

A month without a win isn't a good month and even a 41st career goal for (23e) Bouchez (F.Det) * doesn't make it a good month.

We are still in 3rd place, but Tours are right on our heels and we are looking over our shoulder now rather than looking up at Dijon and Angers.

Season Update. Jun 2036.

Overall Best XI

Goal-scoring GK #1 Lesec still has the most appearances with 371, (and is our 2nd top goal-scorer with 78).

Romain (BAS) (Bal) HG * is the record goal-scorer with 124 goals and he is currently the U19's Manager at a non-league club.

Season Best XI.

Goal-scoring GK #2 (23e) Bouchez (F.Det) * only scored 3 goals this season and is currently out for 5-8 months with damaged cruciate ligaments. We will have to do without him for at least the rest of the year so he will not be adding to his 41 career goals.

While (26a) Núñez (Bal) (2026) * might have won the fans Player of the Season award, he is also fast approaching the end of his contract and I have no tried and failed on 3 occasions to get him to sign a new deal. The reality is that I think I need to be prepared to spend more to keep our best players, (despite the fact that he isn't brilliant in the grand scheme of things), and he is one of our best players by CA.

Finances

Things are not looking great financially. Although we are only approx £5M overdrawn, the board have also been pumping money in to keep the debt at a manageable level. and have so far invested £2.7M into the club just to keep a lid on things.

I actually don't think things are too bad though. While in Ligue 2 we were getting approx £5M per season from TV revenue and I would expect/hope this to rise to at least £25M next season. I actually don't know what it will rise to, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that it's going to increase x5.

Hardly any of the players, (and it might actually be none), have top division/promotion pay rise clauses, (I just refuse the deal if I have to), and I don't think more than a couple have a yearly % pay rise either. With that in mind, our biggest expense, (player wages), shouldn't spiral out of control.

To put things in perspective, we have so far spent £3.98M on player wages this season and the cost of the Youth setup (£3.34M) runs it close.

I am now a legend at the club

Facilities.

I've done really well getting the Junior Coaching and Youth Recruitment levels up as high as they are, but you might notice that the Training Facilities and Youth Facilities are still lacking a little. I have chosen not to improve these yet because they are quite costly to improve. I'm hoping that with the Ligue 1 TV money and the increased value of players, (and then player sales while in Ligue 1), money is not going to be an issue at all in the short term and we be able to plough investment into the infrastructure including a new stadium at some point and both Training and Youth facilities.

Jul & Aug 2036.

Pre-season went as pre-season goes.

We started off life in Ligue 1 with a clean sheet, which was nice as we don't get many of those. Although we then lost to Lens, we were ahead for most of the game before conceding 3 late goals, the last in the 96th minute. We lost 2 more points with a draw against Strasbourg by virtue of an 81st minute goal and then somehow conceded a 95th minute leveller against Nice. That one of the earlier Nice goals was as a result of my GK being caught in possession deep in there half is annoying but the blame lies with me and must be balanced with the joy I get from my GK scoring goals.

I'm not very happy with the late goals we are conceding, but at the same time we have lost only 1 of our opening 4 games so I've got to be a little pleased with that. We are out of the relegation zone and let's be honest, that's all that matters.

We finally have our 1st Ligue 1 win at the 8th time of asking.

We were 2-1 up against Auxerre only to concede 2 more late goals an d rob us of our 1st win. We only had to wait 3 more days though.

Goal-scoring GK #3 (36c) Schmidt (F.Loyal) * might only be 16 years old, but he already has his 1st career goal by virtue of a penalty in the Auxerre game. He's kept 2 clean sheets in  his 4 appearances so far, and that's plenty good enough for me.

We are out of the relegation zone after that much-needed win, but the goal is just to finish 18th and avoid relegation my the Playoffs. Anything better than that will be brilliant.

Transfers. Nov 2036.

I've just realised that I haven't mentioned any of the signings I have made. The main reason for this is that none of them are really "stars" and it's more about adding depth to the squad than anything else. That being said, I need to show you what we have brought in.

2 Frenchmen and 6 Spaniards arrived, (all with Basque as a 2nd Nationality of course).

[Edit] Needless to say that they have all arrived on free transfers, (and 1 loan).

Fernández (ESP) (BAS) (Bal) is probably the pick of them, (at least in terms of CA anyway), and despite him having very high injury susceptibility, the only game he has missed so far this season was due to suspension.

Reta (ESP) (BAS) (F.Det) was probably mu most important signing though as we are absolutely desperate for back up to lone striker (29d) Tristan Albert (Unamb) * up front.

d157c2be575bcf06fcee785601a13cb8.png

His physicals are a little lacking, (certainly when you see the PPM's), but he was the best I could get for the money available.

I'm expecting to fail in my bit do keep us up this season, (but I'm going to give it a right go), and with that in mind I want to use this season to develop the squad we have without bankrupting the club at the same time. The TV money in Ligue 1 was less than I was expecting and we need to cut our cloth accordingly. Getting relegated shouldn't result in the sack, (I have been asked to battle bravely against relegation which suggests that the board think we are going straight back down), so with that in mind, the real disaster would be financial insecurity rather than relegation itself.

Things are developing nicely as far as converting CA into PA goes, (still with very limited /Youth facilities), and with that in mind I wonder if I should look to secure an affiliation to a lower league club with good facilities........

Squad by CA.

5 of the 6 signed players appear on the 1st page of this "CA list", with the 6th player being the next player out of view.

Out best player, (by CA), is 16 years old (35a) Iker (F.Pro) (2035) * who has already been capped at both U19 and U20 level and has already made 5(2) appearances for the senior team. At the moment the jury is still out on whether he is actually going to be a Superstar, or just a big fish in a small pond who will turn into a small fish in a big pond once he leaves us. In any case, he has been signed to a 3+3 Pro contract, so I guess time will tell.

Squad by PA.

the 6 signed players are conspicuous by their absence on this list suggesting that they are a short term investment until such time as we can get our younger players up to speed.

19x 5.0 PA players looks amazing at this level, but the reality is that we are not really at this level yet, (at least our players aren't), so what they are being judged against is too low to give a proper reading. What it does give is however is a comparison to what we have already, (however poor), and in that respect at least things are certainly on the up.

(36a) Dulce (F.Amb) (2036) * sits atop the PA pile and while he is old enough to play for the senior side now, he has yet to make his debut. He would have made his debut for the senior team today, but unfortunately he has already been involved in another match today, (so I need to look at that while we are short up front).

Well done on promotion, would you pay any money if the right player was available?

I'm not sure I would. I'm very much in the slowly slowly catchy monkey camp and the way I see it if we spend a year in Ligue 1, come back down and then go up again the following season then that 2 more seasons with our players developing and new players being produced by our almost fully upgraded facilities. It's a marathon and not a sprint.

Excellent going up Jimbo, especially when it was so tight at the top.

It should have been easier. We fell apart in the last month or so with our 1st choice GK being injured and lost 2 and drew 1 of 3 away games. I fully expected to miss out on everything after losing the last game, (remember that I use an IR button so don't get to see things "live" as they develop).

I'm not positive, but I think the term "Boing Boing" was coined by West Brom because they kept going up and down, (until they established themselves as a regular Premier League side for a while).

There is obviously a lot of red on the board indicating that we are losing, but (as well as the brilliant away win against Montpellier), when we have lost this month we have only done so by a single goal in each game.

Both Monaco and Rennes beat us more convincingly in October, so that could either suggest that Monaco and Rennes are tougher opposition than we faced this month, or, (clutching at straws here), we are slowly improving.

Either way you look at it, we collected another 3 points and this takes us out of the relegation zone and we have a game in hand, (although unfortunately that doesn't mean an awful lot at this stage of the save).

From a personal point of view I notice that we have "not lost" the same number of games that we "have lost", (7 games each), and my goal is to keep the "not lost" figure at least level. A draw is a decent result at the moment and all points will be gratefully accepted. I'm pretty sure that we will stay up if we continue to "not lose" as often as we "do lose", (although a few wins here and there would be vital to this).
