Bayonne?

There are actually a choice of 2 French Basque clubs in National 3 - Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

I think many of us have heard of Bayonne.

But I'm not too sure that I have seen anyone mention Anglet before.

They are in fact neighbours. 14 mins apart down the D810.

This next map shows where they are in relation to the power-houses of Basque football of Bilbao and San Sebastián

Wouldn't it be cool to get not just 1 of them promoted to Ligue 1, but both of them.......

Welcome to Bayonne.

Senior Squad. 8 Basque players in the senior squad is promising. Less promising is the fact that we have just 1x 5.0 PA player at the start,

2199b24a881dfe3eb8e77191f8e47840.png

Reserve Squad. 3 more Basque players in the Reserves, but although we have 3x 4.5 PA players, there are no 5.0 players.

574e33bee153770ac7c39ee775c95d78.png

U19 Squad. Most of the U19's are Basque, (as expected), but the best player in the group, (by CA), is straight French. I have had a look at his history though and he came through the Academy at Toulouse, so that would explain that.

The thing that really jumps out at me however is that we have a 16 year old Model Citizen in the Youth Team, (and he's a product of our Academy!).

Season preview. The suggestion, (at this stage), is that neither ourselves nor Anglet will struggle this season, but then again these previews mean absolutely nothing.

This one comes in sizes up to 44DD. Unfortunately we only play in 1 Cup in this league and neither our Reserves or U19's have competitive fixtures at this stage so I'm afraid a Cup double is out of the question.

Jul & Aug 2018.

Our 1st pre-season was just like any pre-season, but we were left frustrated by a goal-less opening league game against FC Chauray despite battering them.We had 60% possession and 11 shots on target to their 0 shots on target. Too early to say that our tactic dosn't work or our strikers are rubbish though.

I was reading this in another tab, took a break to type up my own update, popped back into this tap with my housemate stood over my shoulder on the image at the top of the page... Looked very questionable and you've lost probably gained an extra follower!

I'm looking forward to this, was a shame Iceland became basically unworkable and I've seen in a few places that's you're keen to give Basque France a go, so this should be good! Best of luck.

Love the idea, hope you can lead the French Basque Revolution to success!

Thanks.

While it's my usual style to remain largely homegrown (HG), other than non-playing tutors, I'm widening my horizons here a little and of course this has been inspired not only by my beta save with Athletic Bilbao, but also @Makoto Nakamuraand I think @BoxToBoxwho have done Basque based saves before, (although the @BoxToBoxsave I'm thinking of might have been Andorra). In any case, I've been really interested in this type of save for quite a while. I have just never really particularly fancied A.Bilbao, and I have never had a chance to start a save like this early enough to do it justice.

83680e4d29955fb969b98e2267668ed3.png

In terms of our transfer policy, I'm going to be following the lead of A.Bilbao and signing only Basque players. Mirroring real life however, signing 16 year old's who are non-Basque, (but who immediately become Basque in game), will be allowed, but it's certainly not going to be the norm. (At least that's the plan).

There are a number of  Spanish clubs who are available to me who generate Basque Newgens, but unfortunately at the time I created the save, the mercurial @claassenhad not managed to create an extended Spanish database, (I think he's pretty peeved with the editor if I'm honest and it seems to have taken a HUGE step backwards). As a result I only have the Spanish structure loaded down to Spanish Division 2 B, (or Tier 3 to you and me).

7fbcff4c621b3f1ef7531aa310d49a73.png

Here is a list of Spanish clubs that generate Basque Newgens in the game currently, (although this is obviously subject to change).

Barakaldo in 2nd Division B2.
Calahorra in 2nd Division B2.
Leioa in 2nd Division B2.
Gernika 2nd Division B2.
Tudelano in 2nd Division B2.
C.Durango in 2nd Division B2.
Real San Sebastian B in 2nd Division B2. (Real San Sebastian seem to be Real Sociedad but I'm not sure the game gas naming issues or if San Sebastian in their real name. I had never heard of San Sebastian until I recently managed A.Bilbao recently).
A.Gexto, (who are one of my favourite Spanish clubs in real life because ex Barnet player Dani Lopez still plays for them and ex Barnet legend Luisma Villa used to play for them).
A.Bilbao B in Division B2. (Obviously).
Amorebieta in Division B2, (Luisma used to play for them).
Real Irun in 2nd Division B2.
Izarra in 2nd Division B2.

Athletico Pamplona in 2nd Division.

A.Bilbao in First Division.
Eibar in First Division.
Alaves in First Division.
Real San Sebastian in First Division.

That's quite a lot actually.

We then have ourselves in National 3 - Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
Anglet in National 3 - Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

On a related note, Luisma would absolutely be joining us, (he's was even a little bit Basque, but he isn't). :(

Taking the free-kick is one thing. Popping it off short is still fine. Staying up in w wide position is even still fine, (it's not fine but let's just go with it for a moment), but for the love of God when he gives you the ball back, just get it in the mixer and get back in goal!  I know I bang on and on about my GK's scoring, so this is for all of you who find it annoying.

It should be added that I dropped the GK after this game, (if my GK can't chest the ball down and spank one in from the edge of the box then he's at the wrong club), and his replacement scored a goal in each of the next 2 games for 2 goals and 2 clean sheets from 2 appearances. (I think he will be playing a bit).

We started off the month well with 9 goals in 2 games, but we have sort of fizzled out a little since then.

We're doing ok. We're just a little inconsistent at the moment and VERY short of numbers good enough to impact on the senior team.

Well this wasn't what the Dr ordered and 2 losses this month, coupled with a loss and a draw at the end of November make it 3 losses in a row and 4 without a win.

Youth Intake Day. Mar 2019.

I didn't really know what to expect with the first intake, and while this is ok, (no intake with at least 1x 5.0 PA player is a bad intake), it's not exactly what I was hoping for either. Unfortunately I just need to accept that this is probably our standard level of intake at the moment, (and with a 3.0 CA player, that's probably a bit better than average actually). Anyway, it's good to get the 1st intake out of the way and crach on.

c83702935822a60eaae9f8587f980951.png

Points of interest, (to me at least).

  • The (Det) levels are pretty decent. We have a 2, 4, 5 and another 2, but that's out of 16 so isn't too bad at all.
  • The workrate is also pretty reasonable on the whole, (although we have a 6, 5, 4, 4 and a 5).
  • As far as ages go, I had forgotten that the French come through so young. There doesn't appear to be a minimum age requirement in this league though so I will probably be looking to give 15 yo (19b) Aguado (Unamb) * a game in the very near future.
  • All 16 players in the group were born in Bayonne.  (Although I like this, I am hoping that we will attract players from further afield as our rep grows).
  • There are no 3rd nationalities in the group, (after French and Basque), and I suppose I expected that we might have some who were also Spanish. Not sure how realistic that is though. :thdn:
  • A more realistic expectation however is that not a single player speaks the Basque language of euskara and I must admit that i don't think it's even in the game, (although I haven't checked). "The Basque language is spoken by 28.4% (751,500) of Basques in all territories. Of these, 93.2% (700,300) are in the Spanish area of the Basque Country and the remaining 6.8% (51,200) are in the French portion". While that makes it slightly more realistic in France, I still don't think it's right and am still pretty sure it's not in the game at all. :thdn:
  • Our best player, (rated by PA remember), is a winger, (and I'm not using wingers at the moment). I'm probably going to convert him to play more centrally. :thdn:

"Kriss" (19a) Núñez (F.Amb) (2019) *.

As I've mentioned already, I don't play with wingers currently, so he will be re-trained as a MC.

08e9dca3b4d8c7b351845d4939943fb1.png

(19b) Aguado (Unamb) *.

I definitely see him as a midfielder rather than an attacker. He is a player that I would usually look to bring off the bench immediately, however as I am playing with the IR button I will instead be starting him and hoping that the Ass Man drags him off at HT.

Determination Problems.

I know from following the exploits of others in these types of saves that (Det) can be an issue. Of course I have given myself the added luxury of signing external players, (just so long as they are Basque), but I have had a thought that might be worth sharing.

In the past when this problem has reared it's ugly thread, we have generally struggled to deal with it in the short term and instead it's been a really onerous task trying to raise the average (Det) levels to a point where it won't drag down the (Det) levels of players who get promoted from the Academy with high (Det) levels, and it will still allow me to sign players wit low (Det) levels without bringing the average down too much.

My thinking is simple, (much like me!) The way that Mentoring works now in FM19 is that players have to be in the same squad for the process to take place. I have seen examples already of players "being influenced by the positive traits of the squad", but to my mind this is no longer the squad as a whole and is instead the specific squad that they are placed in.

With that in mind, then if I was struggling with lots of low (Det) players in my U19 squad, then what I would do is move any promoted players with high (Det), (that I didn't want to to be dragged down), into either the Reserves or the Senior squad, and then make them available for the U19's.

It's just an idea, but I think decisions like this are more important than they once were.

Scouting/Transfers

I have been happy to just play with what I inherited as far as players go, but it would seem to be sensible to start creating a list of potential targets for when and if they become available. In reality this will probably just involve a shortlist of Basque players that come through the ranks at the bigger Spanish clubs.

Our local rivals Anglet have signed just 5 of their Youth Intake to Youth contracts, but i am now scouting the other (BAS) players in their ranks.

There are 9 players at the top of the list who have a high enough rep whereby they should be commonly known, (I think), rather than relying on our very limited scouting network to unearth info about them. Unfortunately, I don't think we are going to be signing any of them anytime soon.

559d83caa209debd6251a9c9a7d46106.png

We've got a pretty rubbish scouting package, but that's to be expected I suppose. More concerning is the fact that we have already spent £10,250 of our £15,000 scouting budget and I haven't even really started scouting yet.

We are currently over-spending on wages, but £500 per week is really just 1 of the better players in our squad and I have a number who I will be off-loading at the end of the season so not bothered in the slightest by that.

I'm not sure what sort of rebate we get in France in respect of Youth contracts, and I'm not sure if it goes down this far in the pyramid either actually. Will just have to see.

The only bit that mentions a player age at all is the "Wage Rules" bit near the bottom, but I didn't think that means that players under 16 were excluded. :(

Apr 2019.

Our winning run of 6 games on the bounce might be at an end, but we are now unbeaten in 7.

5a1a873bd7e60bf34f7a6b1b253374da.png

With 3 games of the season remaining we find ourselves in 3rd place, 5 points behind 2nd and 4 points ahead of 4th.

Niort Reserves are the team in 4 place and because they are a Reserve Team I don't know if they can get promoted. (Not that it matters anyway because it's just the Champions that get promoted and they are 8 points ahead of us).

81ec06060ec94a6d416ef0be10c28bd1.png

Speaking of Reserve Teams, Pau Reserves are already relegated despite not being in the relegation zone. I wonder if that means that that Pau Senior Team have been relegated in a league above?

eb2006eef182456b0adff3b381374cd1.png

Yes Pau have already been relegated, but not from the league above. From the league above that in fact.

The French structure is like this.

b4aa21e5c506fc867bb910fc6fb8dd30.png

Then, below the National 2 level, (3rd tier), we have the following that was accessed by @claassen

Actually, it's hard to get it all on 1 screen.

So we have this.

Tier 1. Ligue 1 Conforama.

Tier 2. Domino's Ligue 2.

Tier 3. French National.

Tier 4. French National 2 (4 leagues).

Tier 5. National 3 (8 leagues).

So Pau Senior Team are at Tier 3 level and about to be relegated to Tier 4, and their imminent relegation means that their Reserves get relegated from Tier 5 to Tier 6. That seems a bit harsh. I knew they couldn't be in the same leagues but didn't expect them to have to have a league between them.

Crash

I lost the last 3 games in a crash and 2 wins and a draw against our local rivals turned into 3 wins. For those who don't know, what happens when I have a crash is that I just replay the game or games and just take whatever the result comes back as, win, lose or draw.

End of Season. May 2019.

I'm quite happy with a 3rd place finish. We were a long way off Football Club Ecureuils Mérignac-Arlac in the end even with a very strong finish to the league.

I'm still yet to get to grips to mentoring, but it would seem that I have the perfect opportunity here to have another look at it.

Baudin (FRA) (F.Det) has (Det) of 16 and he is a Team Leader.
Gasparotto (FRA) (Bal) has (Det) of 13 and he is Highly Influential.

New contract offer.

8e5297a14742ac6932a7531231554282.png

It's still only a 1 year contract, but at least I'm still in a job. The first few years are usually the hardest for me and I need to get through them before I feel comfortable.

1d56a73abedfe60a0bdbf014b23b2c66.png

I tried for both a Youth Recruitment and a Junior Coaching upgrade, but the board said no and I didn't want to push it based on the financial situation at the club. We are £527,294 overdrawn at the bank and we started with approx £500k in the bank so we have lost somewhere in the region of £1M this season.

I have been looking at the fringe players at the club though, (in fact all players), and to that end I have arranged to release the following players at the end of next month.

Zugasti. (BAS) (Bal) - £1,200 pw.
Beltran. (BAS) (Bal) - £450 pw.
Lesca. (BAS) (Bal) - £425 pw.
Baptista. (BAS) (Bal) - £475 pw.
Hirigoyen. (BAS) (Bal) - £475 pw.
N'Zif (MAR) (Bal) was on £130 pw but has retired.

That doesn't look like much of a saving because they are on relatively small wages, but that little lot comes up to £3,155 per week which is a saving of £164,060 over a full season.

Dos Santos (BAS) (F.Loyal) I have been in 2 minds about, but I am thinking of releasing him too as he is earning a whopping £3,400 per week at 30 years old and has only made 6(5) appearances this season after recovering from injury. A saving on this player alone over a full season will be £176,800 which added to the previous releases brings our saving to £340,860.

I've also managed to secure existing players onto a new contract at reduced terms.

Camara (GUI) (Bal) was on £500 pw but signed a new contract on £400 pw.
Dos Santos (BAS) (F.Loyal) was on £600 pw but signed a new contract on £475 pw.
Tastet (BAS) (Bal) HG was on £375 pw but signed a new contract on £350 pw.
Duventru (MTQ) (Bal) was on £550 pw but signed a new contract on £275 pw.
Ribeiro (FRA) (F.Sport) was on £375 pw but sikgned a new contract on £210 pw.

This is a further saving of £690 pw which equates to £35,880 per year giving us a total saving of £376,740 per anum.

I really think I need to be this careful so that the finances don't get away from us.

A.Bilbao missed out on a European place, but maybe they will benefit from that next season. Eibar, Alaves and Real San Seb all retain the place at Spain's top table.

Second Division

A.Pamplona made it to the Playoffs.

Second Division B2.

Neither of the promoted teams here are Basque, but Vitoria and C.Durango  are both Basque clubs and slip into the unplayable abyss. Hopefully they will be replaced by new Basque clubs.

France.

National 3 - Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

We finished in 3rd and our local rivals Anglet did well to finished 6. I would obviously love to see another Basque club promoted into this league but not sure how realistic that is.

:thdn:

I never got anything but French Basques in any intake, of any save, 17 or 18, probably none from outside Bayonne either, but I'd have to check that.

He's not amazing, but he certainly looks better than garbage so far. (10 goals in 20 games after a ropy start to the season where he didn't score for the first 5 games).

Certainly a better tune than I ever got out of him.

I have been happy to just play with what I inherited as far as players go, but it would seem to be sensible to start creating a list of potential targets for when and if they become available. In reality this will probably just involve a shortlist of Basque players that come through the ranks at the bigger Spanish clubs.

Keep an eye on Stephane Ruffier too, might be a bit too old at 32, for your paths to cross as you rise up the leagues, but it's worth keeping tabs on him. A rare, quality French Basque player, and a Bayonne youth grad.

If you have every Basque player loaded, Jonathan Espericueta is another worth keeping an eye on.

Transferring leagues. Aug 2019.

I don't know why, but our local rivals Anglet have swapped leagues despite not being promoted or relegated.

They are now in National 3 - Grand-Est. It could be that they, (and we), are right on the edge of the border and we might be swapped to a new league next season, (or Anglet might be back), but either way it would be interesting to know from @claassenif this is working as intended?

Good story so far.  👍

Any Chance you could download the logo packs?  👌

I'm  not really into logo packs, (don't think I have ever downloaded anything other than real name fixes, hair packs and skins before), but if you link me to it I will give it a go if it's simple enough,

Do you fancy linking me to your old Basque saves please? (And any others you know if if you have time please?)

Romain (BAS) (Bal) HG * is now the best player at the club, (by CA), and he scored 17 goals in 27 appearances last season.

I didn't think to mess about with the database at the start. I was just happy to get going.

Jul & Aug 2018

I don't care even a little bit about pre-season results, but it was nice to score 6 on the opening day and also pretty nice for our GK to score 3 goals in the opening 2 games.

I can do, sure!

This was my big one, but I also went Bayonne/Youth Only(and thus Basque Only), in the Fraud group thread.

These are a few more off the top of my head.

Then there was this one...
