Carlf788
I think I amĀ going too. Monaco areĀ tempting too. SpursĀ tick all the boxes for me. Winning the PL is realistic but still a massive achievement and the league would never become easy in England whilst trying to win the CL. They could attract star players so I have the potential to eventually buy the likes of Mbappe etc. Cracking new stadium. The only club I don't really dislikeĀ out the top 6Ā I also really likeĀ Ā Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez,Ā Vertonghen, Eriksen, Son, Lucas Moura and even Alli has insane attributes on the game. Jogo Bonito
@warlockĀ A very impressive start at Ipswich, way above what any mere mortal could expect with that group of players! The pressure is really on you now @smplfc123 @john1Ā You had a very strong second half of your season, very unlucky to lose at the end like that but it was a massive overachievement. @Carlf788Ā Well done on your work with Brentford, I can totally understand you wanting a fresh challenge though. Ā Meanwhile, on this special day for Charlton Athletic... Charlton Season 1 - Part 4 Having ended 2018 with two defeats in League 1, it was crucial to start the new calendar year in a positive way However that was far from the case as a drab home draw with Walsall was backed up by three more winless games That run was finally broken with an out of character 5-0 thumping of Rotherham in my 3rd Round FA Cup Replay, a great relief On the score sheet that day was debutant Antoine Semenyo, who I signed on loan from Bristol City a few days earlier The 19 year old Londoner was the only new arrival in the winter transfer window, as I needed more cover for my striking pool This game was my third replay in three rounds, but also kicked off a run of six matches without conceding Two of these shutouts were in the much-loved Checkatrade Trophy, and another was FA Cup Round 4 (a kind tie at home to Lincoln) At this stage I was still alive in three competitions, although lots of players were in need of regular rests too After a blip at Peterborough where I threw away an earlyĀ two-goal lead towards the end of the match, the rest of February was faultless And that sequence included the result of my season, with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Chelsea in Round 5 of the FA Cup I followed that up with a massive 3-1 win at promotion rivals AFC Wimbledon and confidence at this point was really high That was evident as Peterborough were then crushed 4-0 to book a place at Wembley for the Checkatrade final March would not follow the same pattern however, as I failed to win the next three and also exited the FA Cup in Round 6 On the face of it, a 1-0 loss to West Ham doesn't look bad, but Felipe Anderson was sent off after 40 minutes so I could have done better The end of the month saw a return to form, with a league win over Bradford and then a fortunate result at Wembley against Scunthorpe 2-0 looks comfortable, but on closer scrutiny you will see both of my goals were scored in stoppageĀ time as extra time loomed As said before, I just cannot seem to lose in this competition, and I somewhat embarrassingly had to hold aloft the sponsor's trophy Again, a new month brought a downturn in fortunes as two trips to the South West yielded one point from six Faith was restored with two consecutive wins over Wycombe (away) and Luton, but then two more poor shows set me back again It's true that defensively I'd improved a lot over these last few months, but the goals weren't flowing and results were up and down This had seen my side fluctuating between 2nd and 4th for some time, and as I travelled to rock-bottom Gillingham I was only in 3rd spot Lyle Taylor, who I had pinned so many hopes on back in the summer, finally came goodĀ as his brace earned me a solid 2-0 win And that left me in 3rd ahead of the final day of the regular season, two points behind AFC Wimbledon but with a better GD So, it was out of my hands - and all I could do was try to beat 7th placed Rochdale and hope for the best Luckily for me, good fortune was again on my side as my weary players stumbled their way towards another drab draw With just 10 seconds left of the 92 minutes allowed,Ā I was awarded a free kick 27 yards out slightly to the right of centre The angle favoured a left-footer, but I had no idea what Joe Aribo had in mind as heĀ stepped up to take it Much to myĀ delight he hit it sweetly, and the ball flew past the despairing dive of their keeper in to the right hand side of the net It was a dramatic end to the season, but at this point I didn't have a clue how AFC Wimbledon had got on themselves Moments later, I checked and discovered that they had been held to a 0-0 draw at Bradford, and I had scraped promotion on GD Aribo and Taylor were soon hearing the news too, and the look on their faces as they ran across to the fans was pure joy It was terribly sad for AFC Wimbledon, and although they rallied to see off Bradford in the SF, they lost 2-0 to Coventry in the PO Final Here is a quick summary of my performance in the various competitions And the player stats in all competitions Josh Parker was the biggest over-achiever by far, and on reputation I'd say Taylor had disappointed me the most TheĀ fans vote went to German central defender Patrick Bauer (fittingly) and he also won the League 1 player of the year award too Winning promotionĀ for the new Chinese owner and sticking two fingers up to Roland Rat was very satisfying I don't know why there hadn't been any help in the budget earlier (I guess FFP), but the club balance still sat at Ā£62 million by season end And they demonstrated their commitment by revealing the budget available forĀ the Championship return I'll be waving goodbye to all of the loan players and several others will be allowed to leave, but Ā£37 million should help the club avoid the drop... Dong21
Congratulations on your promotion @Jogo Bonito and nice touch coinciding it with The Addicks real life promotion too! Surprised to see Taylor underperforming for you and Parker overperforming. I suppose it doesn't matter who, as long as someone is getting the goals. Looks like Aribo had a great season for you - I am hugely fond of him, great player who delivers when it matters. That is an absolutely huge transfer budget for a team just promoted to the Championship. Interested to see who you spend it on. With that sort of money to play with I'm sure you will be in contention for automatic promotion.
Constantine
Alright... I was having a tough time getting into save since my last one (online, with my mate, Birmingham v Blackburn) ended. Tried France, Spain, Germany, Italy. It wasn't doing it for me. So here i am. Birmingham, once again. Decent squad, pretty much great first XI but seriously lacking depth. Dong21
Charlton Athletic - Season 8 - Part 1 The Charlton saga rolls on into an eight season, with this campaigns new challenge being the addition of Champions League football. Going into the transfer window the two players in my team who were attracting the most interest were my central midfield pairing of Fran and Will Hughes. I rejected a Ā£55m offer from Man Utd for Hughes and although he was initially unhappy he seemed to get over it fairly quickly, The Fran situation, however, was more difficult. Real Madrid made a series of bids, reaching the heights of a staggering Ā£95m. Unfortunately when I signed Fran I foolishly allowed a clause to be included that means Valencia will receive 50% of sale proceeds, therefore there was very little appeal in letting him go. I rejected Madrid's advances which led Fran to handing in a transfer request and becoming very unhappy. I thought this would lead to his exit, however Madrid did not come back in with another offer and eventually, to my relief, he dropped the issue. I signed Argentinian international Oscar Faur, a mezzala from River Plate, as he had great attributes and was a bargain thanks to a low release clause. I also recruited Faur with the view that either Hughes or Fran would likely leave. As I managed to keep hold of them both I will have to rotate the three players in an attempt to keep them happy. I moved on Dahoud to make way for the new man. Jemerson lost his place in the centre of my defence mid-way through last season and due to his age his attributes were starting to decline, I therefore decided to move him on. Victor Lindelof's loan ended and Phil Jones also departed as he decided to take an early retirement at just the age of 33. Central defence therefore became my number one priority in the 2025 summer transfer window. I splashed out and spent Ā£44m on a young centre-back called Renato Gomes from Sporting Lisbon. I was hesitant to spend such a large amount of money, however he has impressive attributes, is young enough to keep developing and that price does seem to be the going rate for players of his ilk. I bulked up my centre-back options with two other quality recruits, Filip Benkovic on the cheap from Atletico Madrid and Lukasz Bejger on loan from Man Utd. I bulked up the English contingent of the squad with the free transfers of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ray Quigley, a 20 year old left winger who had been released by Man Utd. There was another Englishman who arrived on a free, with this being a transfer I was really not expecting to make. On this save I am juggling my Charlton commitments with being England manager and during the summer we won the Nations League and the Confederations Cup with Phil Foden starring for me in the CAM role. It came to my attention that his contract with Man City was coming to an end, but I thought I would let him move elsewhere as I have two terrific CAMs in Mulatierri and Frydek. June 30th passed and to my shock nobody approached Foden and he became a free agent. My scouts rated him four star (and better than the other two players) and he only wanted Ā£42k per week, so I decided it would be remiss of me not to sign him. After signing, his transfer value was immediately over Ā£40m so at least I know I can likely make a decent return from him if I was to sell him on! Foden's early form has been good though, so I don't think he will just be a money maker. Many of my young players were sent on loan in the hope that game time helps them develop so they can fulfill their potential. I've had quite poor results from loaning players out in the past on this save but I'm hoping this time will be different. I requested a new feeder team and ended up selecting Preston where four of my players have been sent. Pre-season went well and I've already shared in this forum the unexpected thrashing of Man Utd on the opening game of the season. The first month went really well, with the only defeat coming against the run of play, against Newcastle. I had expected to pair Gomes with Benkovic at the back but when Benkovic arrived late in the window he was not match fit - I started Gomes with Kamara and he scored against United and has kept his place in the team ever since. We added another trophy to the cabinet when we pumped Chelsea 4-1 in the European Super Cup. The match was played in Frankfurt but could really have happened at Stamford Bridge since we share the stadium. We did play Chelsea in a 'home' game later in the month, this time knocking them out of the Carabao Cup. Frustratingly, in the last game I played before writing this update we went out of the same cup to Millwall on penalties, drawing the game 1-1 after they had been awarded a penalty in the match. I played eleven players who had not featured in the game prior, however I had thought that there would be enough quality to take us through to the Quarter Finals. Our Champions League group couldn't have been much tougher as we were drawn with Atletico Madrid, Lyon and Zenit. So far we have beaten Zenit and would also have beaten Lyon if it hadn't been for a 91st minute equaliser. We did lose to Guardiola's Atletico but I will not be losing too much sleep over that as they are an impressive side. We sit 2nd in the group on goal difference - here's hoping I can keep it up and progress to the knockouts. Our league form over the last few weeks has been poor which has seen us fall to a disappointing 8th place. Now this is not a terrible position, but with the squad I have assembled I have higher aspirations. A defeat to league leaders Man City was understandable, but the losses against Brighton and Palace were simply unacceptable. We did win our last league game, albeit against a struggling Everton, so I'm hoping for an upturn in form as we approach the new year. Striker Diogo is injured and this is not helping our main issue, which seems to be a lack of goals. Our top goalscorer is currently Foden with six. warlock
Ipswich: Season 1, January As indicated earlier, we were unable to carry on our successful form as teams started treating us with a little more respect. Sadly, the squad just doesn't have the quality to play on possession. There were also a couple of significant issues with the squad. First, in central defence... when Pennington and Insiala were fit we looked pretty secure, and they racked up average ratings of 7.15 and 7.03, respectively. When I had to rotate in Chambers and the 35-year-old Collins we were vulnerable. They rated 6.68 and 6.89, respectively. Second, the performance of the wide players was appalling. Judge and Dawkins did well as WP-support on the left, and each rated better than 7.0, but on the right wing no-one performed. Best of a bad bunch was Freddy Sears, who managed a single goal and assist in 15 appearances for a 6.8 rating; new signing Gwion Edwards contributed just one assist in 15 appearances and rated just 6.6, and Grant Ward wasn't even that good. Most of the games we've lost have been against much stronger opposition, and the away win at Brentford was extraordinary. When we followed that with our first back-to-back win since August I thought we might have turned a corner, but we've since lost three in a row. So we've slumped to 13th in the table - still significantly over-achieving but disappointing after a promising start. The biggest issue is finances: we dipped into the red at the beginning of December and we're losing around Ā£500k a month. Retained transfer revenue is down to 20% making it difficult or impossible to sell-to-buy, and it's hardĀ to see how I can improve the squad. We started the season with six loansĀ so that avenue is pretty much closed off, too. I'll probably play through to the end of the transfer window and see where we stand, but it's all a bit of a grind and I'm not sure there's enough enjoyment to keep the save going long-term. Not sure what happened to them in the winter update, because I don't remember many money problems when I managed them earlier. I'd have to say that Ipswich probably deserved to be relegated. So many of the squad look like panic buys and loan signings just to make up the numbers - few Championship quality players and they really look like a L1 side right now. I'm looking at Derby again. I have a feeling that they really ought to do better than a playoff defeat - although, to be fair to Frank, we all know how hard it is to get out of the Championship at the right end.Ā Good luck with the Owls. It certainly makes up for the mishap in Fran's contract when it comes to the sell-on clause! Ā On the pitch, there is improvement to be made - but there is plenty of time to do so. It's alwaysĀ helpful when you're able to pin-point the reason as to why you're not picking up the necessary results and hopefully the lack of goals can be addressed soon. Best of luck in the league and also the Champions League. You certainly haven't been given a particularly pleasant group in your debut season in the competition.Ā 15 hours ago, warlock said: I'll probably play through to the end of the transfer window and see where we stand, but it's all a bit of a grind and I'm not sure there's enough enjoyment to keep the save going long-term. That's a shame to hear. You have certainly been dealt a difficult hand at Ipswich and it's clear to see why they went down. However, you can be pleased with how well you've done. You are vastly overachieving. I'd like to see you play on, but if you're not enjoying a save - then it is best to bin it off and go elsewhere!Ā Edited May 28, 2019 by DefinitelyTaylor
Jogo Bonito
Thanks for all the congrats and kind comments about my promotion with Charlton. I tried for hours to upload a video of the winning goal and put it in my post, but to no avail. Everyone seems interested in my massive Ā£37m transfer budget, but it's not as straightforward as you might think.Ā I'm not expecting to renew any of the six loans I had last season (Maxwell, Purrington, Bielik, Cullen, Holland and Semenyo), a couple of players will leave on free transfers (Williams and Vetokele),Ā and there are three more that I would like to shift as I don't think they are Championship quality (Pratley, Reeves and Norwood*). That leaves me with a core of 14 players, most of which are youngsters and/or untested at this level: Phillips, Solly, Dijksteel, Bauer, Pearce, Sarr, Page, Forster-Caskey, Morgan, Aribo, Lapslie, Fosu, Taylor and Parker. I have identified that I would like to bring in seven players (GK, DL, right-sided DC, DM, MC, AMR and ST) to make 21 men. The squad would be bulked out by youngsters or any of the surplus trio that I can't shift. So, taking in to account my preference for players with London connections (e.g. ex-Charlton players or graduates, or somebody born in London orĀ currently/previously a playerĀ at a London club), who should I be signing? The budget is high, but the club reputation is pretty low,Ā I won't pay more than Ā£12k per week in wages to any player this season and I also don't want more than a couple of loans in the squad. I've done one deal for the CM at Ā£500k from another Championship club but he doesn't really have the London connection (South East at a push), so overĀ to the panel for a 'what would you do' moment! Obviously I have some names in mind and have approached some I thought might fit the bill, but most of those haven't gone anywhere so it will be interesting to see what names are thrown at me... @john1Ā Going great with Cheltenham, nobody can say you haven't been at the races this season. @ConstantineĀ Good luck with Birmingham. I like some of their young players that have come through the ranks (Harding especially) but hope you do better than I did with Che Adams when I took him to Swansea! @Dong21Ā As said above, always such an enjoyable read and Foden would appear to be a great signing.Ā I admire your valiant efforts there. @smplfc123Ā My memory is telling me that might be the second time you lost interest with Ipswich, and the second or third time you have taken charge of The Owls. I can't keep up! Wednesday have been relegated in a lot of my saves (including my Swansea and Charlton ones) so it could be a tough one for you. @warlockĀ Well done with Ipswich, stillĀ more than 10 places higher than you should be but if you don't fancy the challenge and it's not enjoyable then I totally get it. You can always join me with Ipswich in FM20Ā as a League 1 game with them soundsĀ an attractive proposition to me. *If my sources are correct, I was told a couple of months ago that Norwood to Ipswich was a done deal. Obviously since then Tranmere have gone on a great run and been promoted, but if the transfer does go through and his stats get the upgrade he deserves, I'll be seeing you at Portman Road in FM20 anyway James. john1
@Jogo BonitoĀ Quiet disappointed as well where few games we was heading for a win, ends up conceding in 90+ minutes :( ie Forest Green away and Bristol Rovers at home. Will probably going to create a 4-2-3-1 tactic that will close up shop and defend the lead from 80th onwards depending how we play.
torquayfmer
Have barely been on this week, just haven't had the time. But I've finally managed to get through the transfer window before we kick off the new season in the Premier League. I've made some new signings, and have spent the whole budget given. Daniel James will challenge Ollie Watkins on the left wing, and looks to be a good prospect. At Ā£7m, I felt he was a good price. Ben Osborn came in from relegated Nottingham Forest for Ā£4.5m which I think is an absolute steal, he looks really strong and I don't think I would have found much better for the price. Cenk Tosun came in as first choice striker with Lys Mousset as back up, which I'm hoping will be just strong enough to keep us up this year. A couple of foreign signings with Stojkovic coming in as first choice right back and Soucek coming in to challenge Ben Godfrey at defensive midfield. This signing could see Godfrey dropping back into centre back this season.

Derby it is. Already into pre-season friendlies and after a bit of "ball... net" instruction for the strikers I'm sure it will be a lot more enjoyableĀ . @Jogo BonitoĀ That London connection is a bit of a tester... just had a look through my scouting reports at Derby and it looks like your best best might be plundering the u23 teams of the London clubs, although Reading seem to have a couple of prospects. Jogo Bonito
@warlockĀ Good luck with Derby, I'm quite fond of them and they have some really good young players who should be a pleasure to manage (at least for one season). Didn't you try them once before in FM19? I've looked at London clubs U23 squads andĀ tried to sign a stack of Chelsea men on loan but I was rejected by the club on every single one of them. Always the sameĀ response as they want them to play 'with a higher quality team and players'.Ā I have several reasons for not wanting to really sign anyone from Reading. P.S. Reading isn't in London

Jogo Bonito
@warlockĀ Fair point! I've got a lot of shortlisted London-born players, let's see what happens! Maybe it was you at Derby in FM18, or maybe it was somebody else in FM19 that did a year with them and then moved on. Anyway, best of luck! I'm sure others have taken them on, and I've talked about them on and off for months. Only the fact that I managed them last year held me back from a repeat visit. Will be watching to see who you manage to attract - and if you're not there yet, the tickover to Championship status might give Chelsea reason to change their minds; happened to me in both my Barnsley and Colchester saves. smplfc123
I've lost count too @Jogo BonitoĀ Unfortunately, I have this 'thing' where by the first 2/3 games of pre-season, regardless of the results, I'm either 'feeling' the save or not. Unfortunately with the likes of Ipswich and Sheff Weds, I just can't seem to get that feeling.
john1
Ā Very tempted by this, currently 14th in Championship. the finances is terrible at Cheltenham and constantly losing money despite selling key players. Ā Stay or go?

I can understand that, but I've enjoyed more than a few saves that didn't feel great until a few games into the regular season. Equally, there's nothing wrong with picking a save purely for fun, one where there are some good players and a bit of money (and the opportunity to make a bit more). I think we often talk ourselves into 'challenging' saves that are great if you can make them work, but are joyless if you can't (*cough* Ipswich *cough*)
