[FM19] The Amerigo Vespucci Diaries

Recommended Posts

Hi, and welcome to another Northernpilgrim career thread. Unlike previous efforts, this time I need to provide a little explanation as to the inspiration behind my career thread.

So who was Amerigo Vespucci?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amerigo_Vespucci

and what on earth does this have to do with Football Manager 2019?

Manager

I've set myself up as a 30 year old Italian with the name of the famous explorer, Amerigo Vespucci, after which North and South America are named. I will begin with no coaching badges, and the minimum level of experience

Vespucci.thumb.PNG.2e8003fa3b386fba161ee5665946adff.PNG

The Challenge

The challenge is to win the top division in all playable South American Leagues, as well as the Copa Libertadores, Copa America and the World Cup, the last two of which must be won with a South American national team, can only be won after all the leagues and continental club trophies have been won, but do not have to be won with the same nation, although they can be. The leagues must be won in order of reputation, starting with the lowest, which is the Peruvian Primera Division, and the whole challenge must be completed before Amerigo Vespucci turns 58 (he died aged 57). Below is a full list of the leagues in order, which I'll update as the challenge progresses (I'll hide it to avoid spoiling things)

Spoiler

And we made an unbeaten start in the first phase of a complicated Peruvian League structure. I'll try and explain more about it as I go

2130791054_Feb2018.thumb.PNG.9c273281563d040784799431c87a207e.PNG

and we're second in the table, but have a game in hand

255309289_Feb2018table.thumb.PNG.1ce3f9988d291ffcea66984dfa579cc8.PNG

and that Copa Libertadores defeat means we're up against it already

April was a much more wobbly month, with the fixtures coming thick and fast

1498346701_Apr2018.thumb.PNG.c6e992041efaf056afda42bb43ab58fd.PNG

but luckily the two league defeats didn't cost us top spot. Finishing there qualified us for a playoff against the winner of Group A

2088817956_Apr2018table.thumb.PNG.814c60a42b531cd899a4ff983414105a.PNG

but our Libertadores hopes were over, and we'll have to make do with a place in the Copa Sudamericana

May was a decent month, and we won the two legged Torneo de Verano Final, which means we will take part in the end of season Champions playoffs, as long as we finish in the top eight of the overall table. The season consists of three league stages, the Torneo de Verano, which has just finished, and then an opening stage and a closing stage, in which we play each team once. The winners of the Opening and Closing stages each qualify for the playoff competition (again as long as they're in the overall top 8), and if a team wins all three stages, the playoffs don't happen and that team is the Champion.

1680132521_May2018.thumb.PNG.cd6c58b992465f2c71e16f6be4423f56.PNG

All of which leaves the Opening Stage table like this

2090011751_May2018table.thumb.PNG.12a19feee57ab4b2b532b6f5818ebe41.PNG

and finishing third in the Copa Libertadores groups qualifies you for the Copa Sudamericana

and immediately set about getting my B Licence

994349748_StartBLicence.thumb.PNG.eeb33aa167df26a17f4d8298709fbefc.PNG

and the month was perfect on the pitch, with three wins from three before the break for the World Cup

425779719_Jun2018.thumb.PNG.ed402751ea76cf1a5745069e876642c2.PNG

which leaves us top of the Opening Stage, with more than a third of the games gone

The World Cup over, league action resumed in July, and we went unbeaten

1802741236_Jul2018.thumb.PNG.ec70c81db03f1e8aa39c558b3fbbad78.PNG

and are top of the table after 11 of the 15 matches in this stage of the season. The way the Peruvian League works, you play each team once in each stage, and the fixtures from the first stage are reversed in the second. This means that we know already we will end the Closing Stage of the season away to Comerciantes

Great format, flying so far!

Thanks rodesire. I've never managed in South America before on any edition of FM, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how the various leagues work. If anyone has any pointers or advice relating to the rules in each country, I'd be glad to hear them, as I know some other regular posters have played South America extensively. I'm looking at you @dafuge ;)

August saw us go out of the Copa Sudamericana after a heavy second leg defeat to Newell's, but we ended the Opening Stage unbeaten

1073521939_Aug2018.thumb.PNG.dd89c97167fef2046beec967342f7b29.PNG

winning the stage by 6 points. This means we automatically qualify for the final, and will be Champions without the need for a playoff if we win the Closing stage. Here is how the Opening Stage finished

I didn't start unemployed. I started as manager of Alianza. I'm probably going to need a couple more coaching badges to get a decent job in the next league though!

I decided on the away leg first after sleeping on it overnight, and the decision paid off, just, as we're through to the final

As the highest ranked team, I was given the choice of home or away first in the final too, and decided to go the same way as in the semi final, with similarly successful results

295420383_POF2018.thumb.PNG.702a0f8cc444e9de58f5c0d7fe1c1d1b.PNG

which means we're Champions of Peru

1084886346_Champions2018.thumb.PNG.2be2614e6ce610237fb7858361729d68.PNG

and the overall table shows how dominant we were, with a multitude of clubs suffering points deductions due to the strict rules on playing time for under 20s. I only noticed this during the Closing stage, so started blooding youngsters to ensure I'd meet the rules and avoid a points deduction

Anyway, you've a very interesting premise for this save. Good luck!

You lose 3 points for every 90 minutes you are under the required number of minutes that under-20s must play in a season. I only made it by virtue of fielding a full u20 team and bench in the Comercio game.

Anyone else think we need a rule like this in England to help younger players develop and get more chances?

It's one of those rules that looks great on first inspection, but in reality teams either take the points hit or do what I did last season and field full youth teams a couple of times.

Also, don't lower leagues already have monetary incentives for giving debuts to youngsters?

In effect yes because of the tribunal system that sets transfer fees for u23s who are out of contract, and the new EPPP system. The more games played, the higher any potential transfer fee.

Apart from the Copa Libertadores, August was perfect

691838342_Aug2019.thumb.PNG.b929cc438f93aaff1ab53ba5a624fb7c.PNG

and saw us win the Opening Stage by 4 points

775825682_Aug2019table.thumb.PNG.d9c5003a6b14ebc0faef1b092f229ba1.PNG

As an added bonus, the note at the bottom of the league table about under 20s playing time has disappeared, meaning we've already met the requirements and aren't at risk of a points deduction. Now to try and win the Closing Stage and render the playoffs redundant. The league season in my next country ends in October, so if the job I want becomes available then, and I can get an interview, I'll go for it. If not, I'll see out the season in Peru and then look at my options.
