Nice find, however the 8gbssd is a bit on the small side.

128gb is plenty

Windows 10 = 6.07 gb

FM = 3gb

That's only 9gb

Leaving you with 119gb.

I know it's not an awful lot - but you can later on down the road either swap out the SSD that's larger in size. Or you can simply buy some USB3.0, for example I got this 64gb that I can't fill - http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Extreme-USB-Flash-Drive/dp/B00DZPUOUI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1456050010&sr=8-3&keywords=usb+3+0+memory+stick+64gb

The user should also be aware that upgrading the RAM in either computer would be highly recommended to increase to, imo, 8gb in the future.

Other than that - both fine machines and well worth considering.

As I said if FM is the main use of file storage then the 128GB SSD option is a good one but if movies & music are being added then it might not be the best choice, as an example I have over 500GB of movies plus another 100GB of music files on my desktop.

Fully agree about the RAM, 8GB should be the starting point these days if the machine is to be used for anything more than internet, email & general work use.

Hi All,

I was hoping one of the regulars could advise on a new laptop. I think Smurf had recommended the below laptop in one instance -

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/P5S40ESABU-HP-ProBook-450-G2_1884971.html

How does this one compare to others in the price range?

The only game I play would be FM, say around half a dozen leagues in good detail. I dont like the 3D pitch engine. I want a laptop that running FM won't over exert and cause to over heat all the time and cause the fan to go noisy as always seems to happen to me!

Ideally around the £400 mark give or take!

Any advice is appreciated - please ask if you need any other info to base recommendation on.

Cheers

i requested advice on a lap top a few posts up. thank you for the help. im now thinking a desktop would be a better option. could some one recommend one again same kind of budget and for FM, movies and music

Sure, do you require a monitor to go with the desktop?

That's a known issue & iirc is due to the latest Windows 10 update. I have the same issue & the solution is to open task manager after launching FM.

A minor faff that will hopefully be fixed, either by MS or SI.

I switched the game into maximised borderless windowed. Game launches no problem after this and looks pretty much the same as full screen

Smurf / guys - picked this one up as was strapped for cash at the time. It runs ok, with minimum Leagues. So, if I was to upgrade some of the components, what needs done ? Can the processor be changed and would that make the biggest difference ?

erm yes. but also find one with out if possible. i fancy hooking it up to my telly if thats doable

Possible - depends what type of TV and what type of connection. Monitors cost money so that would eat into the computer budget.

An SSD added would be enable you to boot up the computer faster - it would also increase the speed of Loading and Saving games, but it won't improve performance of between match days.

You could upgrade to 16gb RAM - but again, that's not going to do much for the Performance of FM.

That's about as much as you could do.

I agree, was skint lol. I wouldn't be upgrading anything, I would put in a shop and they would do it. Was just wondering if it was possible to upgrade and if so what would be the best bits possible. I have a decent PC that runs my games( Civ 5 , FM16) no problem, laptop is for work and playing FM in the same room as the TV when footy on :-) noticed i5 was about £150 so wondered if I could swap that it to this laptop.

You could just get some screen remote access software that works over wifi.

Basically, setup your desktop to play the game, stream your screen and pick it up on the Laptop.

Then you can play the game on the laptop but have it running from the desktop.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2487068,00.asp

Alternatively, get it cost how much it is to upgrade the processor - and what processor you can upgrade to, it will depend on a number of factors, mainly the motherboard.

Then weigh-up if it the cost of upgrading is better than buying a new laptop... and vice versa.

Hi mate,

With your budget you can get a great laptop tbh, more than capable of playing fm to a good standard.

Smurf's suggestion is a good one if you have the extra £50 .. but if i'd go for this one rather than the cube:

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/80K6018MUK-Lenovo-Z51-in-Laptop_1882253.html

If you need to stick to the £500 or cheaper.. consider these:

1. Save you £50 on that budget and you get a great cpu and more than enough Ram, it's cheaper because it doesn't have a dedicated GPU, but if you're not planning on playing the newest games out, you can run most things on it.. with FM being no issue of course.

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/X751LA-TY042H-ASUS-X751LA-TY042H_1811296.html

2. For the £500 .. i'd look at this one, tickss all the boxes... decent cpu, decetn ram, decent dedicated gpu if you want one...

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/X751LDC-T4338H-ASUS-X751LDC-T4338H_1879525.html

3. Scan have a decent deal on this at the moment and it comes with a few decent accessories.. (same laptop on amazon is £100 more)

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/156-asus-x555la-laptop-core-i5-5200u-27-ghz-full-hd-1080p-8gb-ram-1tb-hdd-dvdrw-ac-wifi-plus-bt-40-w

4. Only £400, great cpu.. good ram.. decent enough onboard gpu.. bargain really..

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-15-ab254sa-15-6-laptop-white-10137891-pdt.html?awc=1599_1454595352_25428f445adf4e45eabf970b7ae9e621&srcid=369&xtor=AL-1&cmpid=aff~HotUKDeals~Communities%20%26%20UGC&istCompanyId=bec25c7e-cbcd-460d-81d5-a25372d2e3d7&istItemId=qqpxmxaq&istBid=t

As for which one to pick, it's really a case of deciding what's more important for you really.. cheap but no gpu? .. bit more money but everything you might need now or later on? etc

My personal favourite is the first one, the lenovo z51 .. for the extra £50 you get a lot for your money, brilliant cpu, good ram, great dedicated gpu card, and a really decent HDD and SSD.

Hi Welshace,

I ended up taking your recommendation and going for the Lenovo Z51. Very impressed so far, FM runs brilliantly on it!

Thanks to you and @Smurf for your input and help!

^ My question is also about the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 specifically this one: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/7559-8069-Dell-Inspiron-15-7000_1893767.html

It looks great but has anyone used that site? I see it recommended here a lot. I ask because the price is very good... but suspiciously good! The specs description states 'aluminium chassis' but looking elsewhere this model is definitely plastic. The site is an offshoot of box.co.uk - look at their website and the same laptop is nearly £200 more from the same warehouse shelf. I want to buy it but something is niggling at me, can anyone recommend them?

@Smurf/Welshace - Is the Dell Inspiron 15-7000 still the best option at that price point?

Please post the links and the budget you're working to.

You may have already posted them, but I'm not going trawling the forums to find your post.

My apologies Smurf - you've posted the link so many times yourself I thought it would be etched on your brain haha

Here it is....... http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/7559-8045-Dell-Inspiron-15-7000_1856981.html

Budget is no more than £750 really - cheers!

Well, you hit the nail on the head, I post so many that I can't possibly remember every one.

Try these

They look the same, but I reckon the more expensive one has newer components, possibly a new motherboard, or other.

Up to you.

Email them and find out what the difference is.

I bought a laptop from them, and afterwards I tried to find a link to it. Found they were selling an i5 laptop of the same brand, similar specs otherwise, for the same price as I got mine. Their listings are definitely pretty odd. I'm sure it's not malicious, but would be easy to get caught out and lose out on 40 quid like in the example above.

Did they say it was put up in error or anything, or just that they were the same? Quite poor if it's not the former and they're consciously selling the same product for two different prices.

Yeh I asked about that before for another laptop I was interested in, and it's from the supplier, one supplier is more expensive than the other.

The reply was simply as follows:-

Good Morning,

Thank you for your email.

Both units I can confirm are the same.

Kind Regards,

Considering buying the new lenovo yoga 900s laptop when it is released, but as FM will be something I'll be using it for, I wanted to gauge some opinions on whether it will run it well.

Specs:

CPU: Intel Core m7- 6Y75 (Skylake)

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 515

Memory: 8GB DDR3L

It will run fm fine.. but under high loads it may start to falter somewhat...

It's comparable to a 6200u currently, although as said, won't handle heavy loads as well.

5 leagues will be easily handled.

I'd be cautious on cooling with it though.

Yeah it's fanless, you reckon FM could take it to unbearable heat?

Link to post

i5 6300u under no load ... more like an i3 6100 u under high load as it would be with fm....

but as Smurf has mentioned, the base clock speed is downright awful and will barely run the game unless boosted up to it's maximum, which then kicks in the massive cooling issues.

After looking at the laptop more, as I wasn't that familiar with the new m7's ... it's completely impractical for fm use.

Heat should always be consideration & as the others have said if you really want to play FM you need to look elsewhere, that device will not fair well if asked to run FM & it is very much a case of style over substance which is the wrong ideology for FM.

Worst case scenario is that the CPU gets fried because of the high stress being placed on it, best case is you spend most of your time staring at the processing bar more than you'd like while seeing the device lock up while it crunches through FM could be the most likely outcome.
