New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

The HD 530 would rely on L3 Cachce, if memory is ddr3 or ddr4, the clock rate of the processor and something else I can't remember.

The processor was definitely not bad on it, but it was a bit of a backwards step, and still pretty pricey for what I was getting. The one I got has no such issues that I can see

Hi all, looking at the laptop above.

Here are some of the main details from the website......

The 15.6" Cosmos IV

Specification Snapshot:

6th Gen Intel® Core™ CPUs

GeForce™ GT 940M/GTX 950M

NVIDIA® Optimus™

Full HD IPS 1920 x 1080

SOUND BLASTER™ Cinema 2*

SuperSpeed USB 3.0

HDMI Output Connection

VGA Output Connection

2.0MP Webcam

Wireless Fitted as Standard

BluRay Capable

Bluetooth Option Available

e-SATA Input Connection

More specific details.....

Chassis & Display

Coamos Series: 15.6" Matte Full HD IPS LED Widescreen (1920x1080)

Processor (CPU)

Inte Core 15 Quad Core Processor 6300HQ (2.3GHz, 3.2 GHz Turbo)

Memory (RAM)

2 options......

4GB Kingston SODIMM DDR3 1600 MHz (1x4GB)

8GB Kingston SODIMM DDR3 1600 MHz (1x8GB)

Graphics Card

VIDIA® GeForce® GT 940M - 2.0GB DDR3 Video RAM - DirectX® 12

Memory - Hard Disk

1TB SERIAL ATA II 2.5" HARD DRIVE WITH 8MB CACHE (5,400rpm)

** There are other options. Should another be selected?

------------------------------------------------------------------

A few questions for all you experts.......

Will the criteria selected be enough to handle 6/7 nations loaded?

Is the 8GB RAM recommended over the 4GB as a necessity?

Should I consider upgrading the Hard Disk?

Should a SSD drive be added?

My main frustration over the last few years is the speed at which the game runs, so looking for something that will handle the game effectively and play at an acceptable pace.

All thoughts and opinions welcomed as if you think other aspects should be taken into consideration I would like to hear it.

Cheers.

That will easily run 6/7 leagues, 8gb of ram is better than 4 especially as the cost difference is probably minimal & if you can afford it get a decent sized SSD. The laptop I have on order with PC Specialist has a 500gb SSD because is offers speed & weight benefits.

Only issue will how you watch the match, a 940m might struggle of with 3D above low settings.

I am a traditionalist, not bothered about the 3D match engine. Prefer the classic view. :)

Doesn't an SSD only speed things up such as windows booting up and doing background tasks and won't make any difference to FM's speed. So I wouldn't really bother with it if it's quite a large price hike.

RAM .. get 8gb for any multitasking you plan to do (i.e play fm and surf the net etc) BUT try and get 2x4GB rather than the 1x8gb .. it's much more efficient.

SSD ... will help with boot times and loading fm up, but not with general play and processing. If you want a compromise between speed and price, get an SSHD .. which is best of both world really, I love them.

Other than that, you can easily breeze through what you are thinking of playing...

Will it handle 3d ? And all English leagues. Top Spain, German, Italy league? I'm proper broke so having to get something from bright house on pay weekly. You have to pay loads of Interest but I'm only going g to have it for a bit a d take it back when I can afford to pay for something out right. Could you look at there lap tops and desktops for me and see what's the best. Don't look at the price though you will ha e a heart attack.

Im gonna refuse to, purely on the basis that you'd be freaking insane to go with brighthouse.. look at finance from places like pcspecialist instead, if you can't get any from them, just save up...

Thanks for all the advice folks.

I think I have settled on the following...........

Chassis & Display

Cosmos Series: 15.6" Matte Full HD IPS LED Widescreen (1920x1080)

Processor (CPU)

Intel® Core™ i7 Quad Core Processor 6700HQ (2.6GHz, 3.5GHz Turbo)

8GB HyperX IMPACT 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 (1 x 8GB)

Graphics Card

1st Hard Disk

1TB SERIAL ATA II 2.5" HARD DRIVE WITH 8MB CACHE (5,400rpm)

1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive

8x SATA DVD±R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24x CD-RW)

Sound Card

Intel 2 Channel High Definition Audio + MIC/Headphone Jack

Operating System

Genuine Windows 10 Home 64 Bit - inc DVD & Licence

3 Year Standard Warranty (1 Month Collect & Return, 1 Year Parts, 3 Year Labour)

Will ask regarding splitting the Memory to 2x 4GB as opposed to the 1x 8GB.

If I'm right it's the i5-4200U processor in the Surface Pro 2.

I wouldn't play with any more than 3 nations and 2 tiers in each. That's the limit I'd say.

3D matches would probably be a no go.

It's the i5-4300U 1.90GHz.

Recommend set-up gives me England, Germany, Spain, Argentina and Brazil. I think I'll go with 7-8 nations then, just the top divisions loaded of most. 3D matches do work fine.

PC world one is definitely better but doesn't have a dedicated graphics card and I could not see what integrated one it had so it may not be great for 3d .Would stay away from the John Lewis one after reading the review at the bottom of the screen.

It comes with the HD 520 integrated gpu, which is superb (equivalent of a 820m dedicated geforce card) and as such can handle fm perfectly fine, as well as modern games on low tbh.

Also agree with the pc world one.

The amount of leagues you run has virtually no bearing on how 3D matches handle.

You can play on low detail 3d and turn off the surroundings, stadium, outside, crowd, etc.

The answer is a resounding yes Zak, that will handle what you need fine and more.

Thank you for your advise will buy that laptop then .

Hi guys,

Anyone had any experience with Gigabyte? Thinking of buying a new lappie and saw this one :

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/P55W-v4-CF2-Gigabyte-P55W-v4-CF2_1858597.html

Really like the spec of it. Any comments appreciated!

Spec on it is pretty damn good... and the price is decent tbh...

The only thing to consider with a budget that big is if you would be better off customising a laptops specs to your own specific needs...

I.e.. Do you really need the GTX 970? or would you be better off putting that money somewhere else and saving yourself £100 or whatever?

Well FM isn't the only game I play and a good graphics card would be handy. I was also thinking of buying it on finance because it's £200 off the price and finance is only £50 more by 5 months spread payment.

Also is there really a big difference between 16GB DDR3 memory and 16GB DDR4 memory?

In real world, at home pc terms, no difference at all tbh... it's the ram clock speeds you want to look at really.

If I were you I would look to see if I could get a better deal with a similar machine - but customized - at either pcspecialist.co.uk or mySN.co.uk. (I'm assuming that you are resident in the UK). For the price, you might get something just as good or better, possibly even including a newer generation processor (and DDR4).

About the GTX 970M. It is a great card, will play anything on maxed settings or near maxed @ 1920x1080. With a few games - particularly newer games ported from xbox or playstation - the 3GB version may run into slight issues that you won't see with the 6GB version. A couple of these games seems to be particularly memory hungry.

Sorry if already been asked but anyone here play on a Mac?

any pros/cons for a Mac over a laptop?

i know it all depends on quality of the machine but i'm talking a brand new Mac computer/laptop on the market currently. looking to play maybe around 10 leagues with a large database? really looking for a long save 20-30 seasons etc

any advice/heads up would be much appreciated.

thanks

... but that aside, from what I understand, FM will play exactly the same on a Apple laptop (and iOS operating system) as it will on other brands using Windows as an operating system, the hardware being equal. The drawback with iOS may be that the availability of FM 3rd party "tools" etc. will be lower within the iOS "community" than it is for Windows users. But that is business as usual; the Windows users - and FM gamers using Windows - are more numerous, and so are Windows 3rd party developers/contributors.

How well a Apple computer will play FM is determined by the same parameters as any other computer; the strength of the processor, the amount of RAM and to a certain extent, the power of the graphics card or chip.

I brought it of the HP website for the same price it gives you 12gig ram so I guess I made the better choice http://http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=T1K63EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB

Hi guys,

I'm thinking of purchasing this laptop...however I can't workout if it will run Football Manager 2015.

Here is some info from the website:

CPU, Memory and Operating System:

Intel Pentium 3825u dual core processor.

2TB SATA hard drive.

Microsoft Windows 10.

Graphics:

Intel HD Graphics.

Shared graphics card.

http://www.argos.co.uk/beta/static/Product/partNumber/5173066.htm

I am more than happy to play with a 2d pitch, I just don't want to purchase it only to find out FM is not compatible!

Thanks in advance,

Tommy

I wouldn't touch that with a 20foot barge pole Tom... it's over priced and under powered to hell.. It would barely run fm15 and certainly not fm16.

Can certainly suggest other laptops better suited for you if you can provide some info on your budget, needs and if you need to buy from Argos in particular or happy to go elsewhere.

Hi Welshace,

Thanks for the input! Maximum budget would £500, I know I won't get an amazing laptop for that but I only really use mine for FM, surfing the net and MS Office.

I don't need to buy from Argos so I welcome any suggestions you have.

Thanks

Tommy

How would that laptop run FM16 and maybe other modern games, though mainly FM.

Would be looking to run a medium database, 5-6 countries minimum and around 15 or so leagues.

Not great.

Modern games, unlike Football Manager (which is modern in a different way), don't rely much on the processor. Other modern games are mainly graphic driven.

FM is processor intense, and this laptop might be ok for other modern games, but I wouldn't bet on it for FM.

*edit to clarify what I meant by modern.

Hi mate,

With your budget you can get a great laptop tbh, more than capable of playing fm to a good standard.

Smurf's suggestion is a good one if you have the extra £50 .. but if i'd go for this one rather than the cube:

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/80K6018MUK-Lenovo-Z51-in-Laptop_1882253.html

If you need to stick to the £500 or cheaper.. consider these:

1. Save you £50 on that budget and you get a great cpu and more than enough Ram, it's cheaper because it doesn't have a dedicated GPU, but if you're not planning on playing the newest games out, you can run most things on it.. with FM being no issue of course.

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/X751LA-TY042H-ASUS-X751LA-TY042H_1811296.html

2. For the £500 .. i'd look at this one, tickss all the boxes... decent cpu, decetn ram, decent dedicated gpu if you want one...

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/X751LDC-T4338H-ASUS-X751LDC-T4338H_1879525.html

3. Scan have a decent deal on this at the moment and it comes with a few decent accessories.. (same laptop on amazon is £100 more)

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/156-asus-x555la-laptop-core-i5-5200u-27-ghz-full-hd-1080p-8gb-ram-1tb-hdd-dvdrw-ac-wifi-plus-bt-40-w

4. Only £400, great cpu.. good ram.. decent enough onboard gpu.. bargain really..

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-15-ab254sa-15-6-laptop-white-10137891-pdt.html?awc=1599_1454595352_25428f445adf4e45eabf970b7ae9e621&srcid=369&xtor=AL-1&cmpid=aff~HotUKDeals~Communities%20%26%20UGC&istCompanyId=bec25c7e-cbcd-460d-81d5-a25372d2e3d7&istItemId=qqpxmxaq&istBid=t

As for which one to pick, it's really a case of deciding what's more important for you really.. cheap but no gpu? .. bit more money but everything you might need now or later on? etc

My personal favourite is the first one, the lenovo z51 .. for the extra £50 you get a lot for your money, brilliant cpu, good ram, great dedicated gpu card, and a really decent HDD and SSD.

Hey Welshace,

I'm thinking of purchasing a new laptop and the two which have caught my eye on this page are:

Chassis & Display

Cosmos Series: 15.6" Matte Full HD IPS LED Widescreen (1920x1080)

Processor (CPU)

Intel® Core™ i7 Quad Core Processor 6700HQ (2.6GHz, 3.5GHz Turbo)

Memory (RAM)

8GB HyperX IMPACT 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 (1 x 8GB)

Graphics Card

NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 940M - 2.0GB DDR3 Video RAM - DirectX® 12

1st Hard Disk

1TB SERIAL ATA II 2.5" HARD DRIVE WITH 8MB CACHE (5,400rpm)

1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive

8x SATA DVD±R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24x CD-RW)

Sound Card

Intel 2 Channel High Definition Audio + MIC/Headphone Jack

Operating System

Genuine Windows 10 Home 64 Bit - inc DVD & Licence

3 Year Standard Warranty (1 Month Collect & Return, 1 Year Parts, 3 Year Labour)

I think this is around £650

Secondly, the Lenovo you've linked above for £550. Is the £650 much better? All I can see is that the processor is quad core rather than dual for the cheaper one?

Link to post

Oh the cpu is vastly better.. there is no comparison really..

The ram is likely of much better quality in the pcspecialist one too.

However, the HDD isn't as good, it's standard mechanical drive rather than an sshd combo with the lenovo..

The gpu in the pcspecialist is better also.

In FM terms, there is no question the pcspecialist one is better simply due to the cpu, good quality ram and gpu.. is it £100 better? depends if you have the money available readily or not really.

Seems to have a better cpu and better graphics card?

Link to post

How is that a better cpu? it's about on par with an ultra low powered or old generation entry level i3..

And it doesn't have a graphics card... only onboard graphics from the apu.

Certainly nothing that would run modern games.

Well from doing some research it seems to be that the cpu is better than the previous linked laptop.

Looking on the HP website at this laptop (http://www8.hp.com/uk/en/products/laptops/product-detail.html?oid=9093477#!tab=specs) that says it has an Intel HD 520 card.

For FM (in 3D), to load about 4-6 countries and around 15 or so leagues whilst browsing the net that'd be fine surely?

If not then for the price range is their anything that you'd recommend?
