New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

This totally irrelevant to those who want a perfect condition laptop, but is helpful to those who are on a budget. Look at the amazon warehouse deals, now and again a bargain will come up. If you're after performance over cosmetics then i suggest going there.

I see someone got Z510 i got the exact same specs for £140 cheaper. Cash back not included it's a hell of a lot more.

Hi, i'm fairly clueless with regards to the specs of a laptop but need a new one. The problem is I only have about £450 available now, an everything I can find in that range has this U

processor that we are told to avoid. So why is this so important to avoid in regards to playing fm, and has anyone got anything they can recommend in that range?

Thanks.

http://www.ebuyer.com/666608-hp-pavilion-15-laptop-k1r59ea-abu This would run the game, though i'm not a fan of amd processors.

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/59416543-Lenovo-G500_1657706.html This would be decent, intel processor and amd GPU.

Personally i'm staying way from amd processors from now on.

Eugene or anyone else can you help me please, is there anywhere that do laptops on credit and you get a decent laptop, went into Curry's yesterday and seen a decent laptop with 8gb ram, 1tb hard drive etc, can get it for 17 quid a month, the laptop is priced at 400 quid, just wondering if anyone has any better ideas of what to do as I aint got the money up front to buy it.

Ebuyer do, though I'm a student so they don't do it for me. I was looking and it seemed quite fair to me. Laptops direct do too, though there's were in less instalments.

I'm trying to stay around the $300 mark. I basically am just going to use it for schoolwork and possibly FM as my PC will suffice for everything else. When you say it will barely run FM, is it worth putting it on there or will it stuff up the laptop. I don't really care if it's a little bit slow as it is on my PC anyway.

This is pretty good.

But if you replace your hard drive you also have to replace your Operating system. You can clone your hard drive to the ssd

Hi Eugene,

I should of said , I was thinking on the lines of an external one that I can plug in. Each time I look on Amazon at them, you get some decent reviews and then boom, you get a one star view saying its slower than a hard drive.

Well everyone has a different setup - it's probably that user has it plugged in to a USB 1.0 port which would bottle neck it, where as if they plugged it into a USB 3.0 port it would be a lot faster.

Stick with good makes like Samsung, Verbatim etc. and make sure you have a USB 3.0 port and that the SSD is USB 3.0 compatible.

It's a "u" model processor so it's a no from me.

Sorry, but this is just bad advice (advice I've seen repeated multiple times whilst reading back through this thread unfortunately) ... for example, here is a list of mobile processors;

i5-4350U

i5-2450M

i3-4100M

You will likely find that of those CPU's, the 4350u is the fastest / best performing, or at the very least comparable in performance terms to the others. There is NO legitimate reason to avoid 'u' models at all costs just because they are power efficient (a useful benefit in it's own right for people on the move), and it certainly doesn't mean they can't run FM15, because the vast majority, if not all, will be able to.

As long as people are aware of the relative price & performance of a CPU, and how it compares to another model, they can make an informed decision.

In case it's not been posted before (and as evidence of the above), this is a useful site for quick high-level mobile CPU comparison (there are others);
