New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

I asked pcspecialist what they'd suggest for FM14. I gave them the same story I posted here, and said my budget was £650. They proposed the config below for £591. I'd be very grateful for any views on this config, and on the one I originally suggested above for £651.

like I said, you'll still be able to run the match engine on medium, and the processor's pretty good for its price

keeping your budget under 450, the one you selected is the best option of the ones I looked at

that linked laptop is a significant upgrade on what you've currently got, and (given SIs reluctance to majorly increase the specs of future FMs) should bode you well for a few more years

basically the bottom comment is a VERY similar spec'd machine to yours, so I'd expect similar results (possibly the lower end of medium, given the upgrade to the match engine)

edit: @grantem - the first one you posted would be better personally

the 8GB ram would be much nicer for uni coursework [as a personal preference], not sure what he studies

the cooling paste would be pretty unneccesary

you could also whack the processor down to an i5 (wouldn't make that much difference), and increase the graphics card if he plays other games (more graphically demanding ones than FM, which is most currently on the market)

Looking to get a laptop which will do me well for a few years and run FM smoothly. Roughly play with a large database with just the popular European countries loaded. Not necessarily all the leagues. Tend to have about 35,000 players loaded.

Just get a large SSD and scrap the 1TB internal drive. If you need this then get an external 1tb.

The SSD would see significant improvements in boot up time, loading and saving long term games.

Don't get a hybrid.

Get the 256 ssd - the 128 would be enough though.

If you need more storage get an external drive - or invest in cloud storage, which in my opinion is fantastic. If you have a upload limit on your data plan with your internet provider then it's not for you.

Seems fine -there's no graphics card - I'd always recommend a standalone graphics card.

But the cpu has a gpu that is more than capable of playing 3d at low-med detail.

This would be better - the 8gb SSD drive is a bit of a joke, windows 7 requires 16gb of space to install so your operating system will be on the other drive.

But the SSD would be good for saving your FM games to - faster load and save times

Yes - when you get your computer - format it completely - reinstall a new version of windows - it's an extra cost but it's worth ridding your computer of bloatware for better performance.

Get a lightweight free antivirus, AVG, Avast, Avira etc. are all pretty good, personally I use AVG and never have an issue.

Hi, I have a question to ask. I want to buy a new laptop and I'm looking at the new laptop/tablet hybrids. I got my eye on the Yoga Pro 3 from Lenovo, so my question is how will the new FM run on the new Intel Core M processors and HD5300 graphics? I want to play as many leagues as possible with the biggest database option Would that be a good choice? Or maybe the i7 Surface Pro 3? I want something light that is easy to carry around, while still having enough power to play FM. Any thoughts?

Yes it looks good.

You just need extra RAM - it's relatively cheap these days - buy more RAM for your computer and up it to 8gb RAM.

It's easy to install, one screw underneatht the laptop usually. Easy to install yourself and cheaper.

Just make sure you check the tech specs of the RAM to make sure you're buying the correct ram.

I might be asking for a lot of help here but I'm looking for a desktop PC. I already have a MacBook which I use as my everyday computer, so a desktop would be perfect as I don't need it to be portable or anything. I'm primarily going to be playing FM but I'll also look at PC games.

I have a budget of around £600-£800 for the PC, so anything 'top end' would be great.

At £600-800, it's easy to get yourself a nice high-end desktop. The best route, would be to buy the components and assemble it yourself, if you believe this is achievable (it's really not that difficult). However, if you prefer the route of a pre-built system, then http://www.chillblast.com seem to be a good place for pre-built systems.

An alternative is to buy a base unit, such as this. Then add a graphics card (£100-300, depending on what level you want) and most likely a new psu (£40-70) to support the new graphics card.

That processor is a power efficient ultralow processor too - similar to the i5 4xxxU that we talked about earlier.

Problem is that FM is a processing game, so your processor is going to be processing lots of information, when this happens the processor stats to heat up - and after that happens it tries to cool it self by 1.) a built in fan and 2.) By going at a slower clock speed to prevent overheating and damage.

You most likely will never reach 3.2ghz processing speed while playing FM, it will probably be around the 1.9-2.4ghz.

The one I linked to is better - but it's your choice.

I first played the championship manager game back in 1994-95. And I am proud to say I have bought every single version in all it's forms since. This is the only computer game I play and spend hours on it. I am not the most technical of blokes but what is the best computer/spec I can get for ultimate performance? Max budget of £400-£500. I normally just have 5-6 leagues running in 2 or 3 countries but I would like the best graphics I can for that budget.
