New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I'm trying to help my brother find a laptop for uni, his one request is that it be able to play fm. His budget is £300-400, I have found a couple of laptops but I am unsure whether they would play fm well or not.

ACER Aspire E5-511

HP Pavilion 15-n271sa

ASUS X550CA

HP 15-g094sa

Really curious as to whether these 2-in-1's are good for fm.

Something like this?

Actually I like it at first because of some amazing specs, but I read the negative reviews about how ugly the screen resolution is. I thought the guy is trolling but I googled it and bam! Y50 has the worst screen resolution out there

Just for those looking around the £500 mark. I got a Toshiba ex demo from staples for £427 (bit of haggling) with a i5 4200m processor and a 740m 2gb dedicated graphics cards, 8gb ram.

Those are good bench marks to aim for at this price point. the i5 4200m is processing the game quicker than the i3-3220 that was in my desktop, the graphics can run high settings although not super smooth, medium are fine.

The only draw back is the screen resolution 1366 x 768. Just taking a bit of getting used to. Although i'm not sure how 1920 x 1080 would look on a 15.6" screen anyway.

Never had a laptop before, glad i switched although i miss the mouse!

Still, visiting the 'outlaws' this weekend, can take the laptop and play Fm whilst they talk crap :brock: Bonus.

Hi guys, first post here but felt compelled to comment.

Last year i bought a Samsung 370R notebook, i only use it for t'interweb and football manager.

within about 5 minutes of using it i'd taken windows 8 off it as it did my nut in, i then got a bit bored and decided to stick an SSD in it.

Have to say, this was the best decision i ever made - i can full boot windows in about 10 seconds flat now, and be playing FM within about a minute ... It's pretty clear to me any laptop for playing FM benefits massively from having a SSD. My game processing time is mere seconds - according to the game creator a regular mode fm save with 48k players has a 3 star rating.

the laptop has:

Intel i3-3110M @ 2.4GHz (quad core)

6GB RAM

Intel HD Graphics 4000 (booo - this is jut terrible, but i dont use the 3D match engine anyway - i have never even tried so couldnt say how it looks - much prefer the old school 2D views).

Crucial 120GB M500 6Gbps SSD (currently about 60 quid on ebuyer).

My laptop was £350 when i bought it, so thats a total spend of £410 ... my advice to anyone who is not bothered about 3D is get a good (quad) processor, decent amount of memory and find one with an SSD (or do what i did and bin the warranty by putting your own in).

@ Frankie 7

I see that's from PC Specialist. That will run FM smoothly on high settings. Few pointers:

1) Upgrade to Silver warranty for an extra £5

2) I'd strongly advise the Seagate Hybrid drive instead of the 5400rpm Scorpio Blue hard drive. Fairly significant speed increase for an extra £15 or so.

3) Upgrade the wireless card to the N-7260 for like an extra £10 I think. The N-135 card is known to be a bit dodgy.

All those changes should only increase the price by around £30 for a big improvement, and the Silver warranty is a must. Good spec otherwise.

How much is that one? I can't see which model of processor it is beyond i5 intel, (old gens start with 2, 3 and new gens start with 4). For under £700 you could get something miles better like this Cube Chameleon. i7-4700mq is a high end, new-generation quad-core processor which would be great for FM. It also comes with a newer graphics card and a faster 7200rpm hard-drive.

That's £560 on Amazon.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 720M is the graphics card.

What's the processor? I'm guessing it ends with a U?

Take a look at some of the laptops on here. FM is a processor-heavy game, so you want an Intel processor that starts with a 4 (meaning 4th generation) and ends in an M or MQ rather than a U. (M is Mobile, MQ is Mobile Quad-core, U is Ultra-low power)

EDIT: Yeah just seen it's a i5-3337U processor. That's not going to be great for FM and at £560 you can do better. Also only comes with a 1 year manufacturer's warranty.

I'm currently weighing up the following 2 computers, I want to be able to run 4 countries with about 15-20 leagues. What speed would this run at roughly on the following laptops.

https://www.cyberport.de/lenovo-thinkpad-edge-e531-n4ieuge-notebook-mit-mattem-display-ohne-windows-1C30-3LQ_1695.html

https://www.cyberport.de/lenovo-ideapad-g710-59427209-notebook-schwarz-i5-4210m-4gb-sshd-hdplus-dvd-dos-1C31-2LQ_1695.html

Ideally I'd like this laptop to last me 3-4 years running fm at good speeds till then. Would the 2nd one be worth the extra €50 for the extra longevity. Whichever one I get I will be adding 4-8gb of ram myself.

Can anyone give any advice on this laptop. Want to play in 3d graphics with about 3 nations as my current laptop really struggles to play fm. Not wanting to spend more than £650 ideally if anyone has any better suggestions.

Hi chaps,

I'm looking at getting back into FM, and so I'm looking at getting something that can run a lot of leagues. I love to travel :)

I have a friend who works at Toshiba and he can essentially get me discontinued laptops cheap. He suggested this to me for £520.

http://www.toshiba.co.uk/discontinued-products/portege-z930-10q/

However, looking online I can get this for the same price and it looks a little better to me...

http://www.toshiba.co.uk/laptops/satellite/l50-b/satellite-l50-b-1p7/

The second one has more RAM and a faster processor. My friend has pointed out that his suggestion has an SSD hard drive which will be quicker.

I'm pretty unsure when it comes to computer tech, so any help would be great. Thanks!

hey guys just wondering if anybody with computer know how can help me out.

i am looking to purchase a new laptop within the 500-900£ range - i will be using it to watch movies, make music, play fm14/15 and other more demanding games.

the laptop i am currently looking at is this one:

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/CB-CZ7850-441GAS-Cube-Chameleon-CZ-7850_1655174.html

can anybody tell me:

what would the performance be like on fm14 using this laptop?

would I be able to play other more demanding games at decent settings?

would this laptop be considered relatively 'futureproof'?

finally are there any other laptops around this range or cheaper that will offer similar or better performance as it is quite expensive and if i could save a few bob that would be great!

many thanks!!

The SSD will definitely help with load/save times on career games (the longer you play the larger the file size).

Both more or less the same - go for the SSD.*

*Please note the processors with a "u" in their name are not as fast as processors with "m" after their numbers. You will have less processing power in the "U" processors - M, MX, or MQ would be preferred.

Was so focussed on trying to get value for money on a decent processor and memory, was about to buy a new laptop without checking the graphics card! I'm looking at an HP with an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600. Is that sufficient to play the game on basic 3d setting?

The integrated graphics card is sufficient to play FM on the 3d basic level.

Hi all, got a little spare cash just now, up to 650, but would rather not spend that much. I'm looking for either a small Base unit(media style) to go under TV, or a laptop. Only tend to play spl, bpl an La Liga. Never been able to have 3d graphics on anything more than basic. Pretty sick of laptops not lasting so warrantys a must. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey,

I'm looking at buying a new laptop in time for the big release. Anyone have any advice?

well, there are a few things to ask:

1) how much do you want to spend? (no point in recommending a 700 GBP machine if you can't afford it)

2) what country do you live in?

and we've also got no specifications for FM!5 yet, but I'd imagine they'd be similar to FM14 (the game hasn't really grown specwise over the past 4 years)

A quick question that can probably be answered pretty easily - now that I'm moving house, I'll finally get the space to have a proper desktop and free me from the tyranny and expense of laptops. What are the best places for "build-your-own" desktop solutions? I'm not going to go all "PC-Master-Race" and demand top specs, so somewhere that has a good range and is reasonable enough would be good.

Looks like it would be fine for a small-medium database, running 3d graphics in basic detail.

ahh Eugene,

yes, the processor would be an upgrade here, but it depends on how much you want to spend

an improvement to the graphics would also be appreciated, but if you're running FM in "commentary only" then it would make much difference

basically:

processor = speed (that damn "processing" between dates becomes less)

and graphics = match engine quality

the other specs look reasonable coops, so you're probably not too far off (unfortunately those 2 things are [generally] the most expensive computer parts though)

Looking into upgrading my old Dell, and Ive stumbled upon an interesting Lenovo Ideapad U430p Ultrabook. Key specs:

- Core i5 4200U 1.7 GHz, with turbo capability up to 2.6 GHz

- Intel HD Graphics 4400

- 4 GB DDR3L 1600 Ram

- 500 GB Solid State Hybrid HDD, with 8GB SSD cache

- Windows 8.1

How would this run FM, in terms of graphical performance etc?

It's pretty decent, but you'll suffer with the "u" processor as they are not as fast as the "m" or "mx" etc. processors.

How much is it - what's your budget??

Cheers mate

It is around 500 pounds, and my budget is prob 500-650 pounds. Keep in mind Im from Denmark tho, just in regards to dealers etc.

What dealers would you usually use and what's your budget in Danish krone?

In Danish kroner its probably 4500 to around 6500 :) Dealers I normally like are proshop.dk, komplett.dk, computersalg.dk, elgiganten.dk and fcomputer.dk.

Keep in mind FM is the only game I intend to really play on the laptop, so Im fine with integrated graphics (Intel HD) in order to gain portability and build quality. Also screen size I would like 15.6 to be max.

Cheers again for your help!

My son has a 3 year old NOVATECH NSPIRE 2430 15.6" laptop with an i5 2430M processor, 4GB DDR3 memory and NVIDIA GT 555 mobile graphics. His most demanding use of the laptop by far is FM14; otherwise it is university coursework, web browsing and streaming video. In FM14 he likes to keep the amount of countries he plays on quite low - usually it's just one - and has graphics set on High. He finds performance on his laptop OK, but he finds it runs very hot and is becoming unstable even running on a "cooler-pad" with a USB driven fan.

I'd like to get him a new laptop for his 21st and have a budget of £650. It doesn't seem necessary to spend £650 do get a laptop to do the job now, but I would like to get something which will last as long as possible. It does need to be a laptop because he moves it between home and university etc, but light weight and long battery life are not priorities as it is usually at a desk and connected to the mains. He needs 500GB storage, but no more than that. From this thread I have learnt that I should get the best possible processor, and that pcspecialist offer good value, but I am uncertain about the relative priorities of other components. 13.3" screen vs 15.6" (my son does not have a preference)? 1366x768 or 1920x1080 resolution? 8GB, 12Gb or 16GB?

Above all, I'd like to choose something that minimised the chances of the new laptop overheating.

Anyway, if I maximise processor and stick to 8GB and 1366x768 I can get the spec below for £651 at pcspecialist.co.uk. I would be grateful for any views on the specs below, and on other options from pcspecialist or elsewhere. In essence, what is the best way to spend £651 (or less!) given the requirements above.

Cosmos II 15.6" Matte HD LED 16:9 Widescreen (1366x768)

8GB KINGSTON SODIMM DDR3 1600MHz (1 x 8GB)

Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-4710MQ (2.50GHz) 6MB

NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 840M - 2.0GB DDR3 Video RAM - DirectX® 11

500GB WD SCORPIO BLACK WD5000BPKX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 16MB CACHE (7200 rpm)

ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND

Adding 8GB would cost a further £88.

i5-4340M and i7-4610M which both benchmark less well than i7-4710MQ cost more. To save money on processor, I'd have to go to i5-4310M (£29 less than above if i5-4310M is swapped for i7-4710MQ) or i5-4210M (£65 less than above) but both are rated far below i7-4710MQ at notebookcheck.net (ranked 85 and 89 compared to 26 for i7-4710MQ).

Is Arctic Extreme Thermal Conductivity Compound (sounds wonderful) worth the extra £9 it costs? I am assuming it is given the comments I made about overheating, but I don't know.

Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread to date, and thanks in advance to any who can give me any further guidance on what to buy.

Looking around Ive found this laptop made by a Danish company, based around the Clevo W550EU chassis http://www.mm-vision.dk/vision-b4570-baerbar-med-ips-panel. Specs are:

- i5 4210M

- 8 GB ram

- Intel HD 4600

- 240 GB SSD

- 1920x1080 anti glare 15.6 screen

At around 650 pounds I guess this is a good deal, and should do well with FM? My only concern would be the build quality of the Clevo Chassis.

I recently got a new laptop with similar specs but with 8gb ram, it runs brilliantly for what i want. I can run 10-12 leagues at 5 star and processing times from day to day are minimal. The recommended quality of the graphics is high and runs without lag or jumps you could probably push it to very high. If you could get it up to 8gb ram i would really recommended it as i can jump in and out of football manager to browse the internet or change a podcast without a dip in performance at all so unless you can get an M processor for the same price or if you want to run more leagues than me I would say go for it Rhazmuz

Cheers mate :) It does come with 8 gb ram, so I guess I will be golden :D
