New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Looking for a laptop myself for FM too...

It sounds like the general advice is to go for:

Acer seems to be the recommended brand

8GB RAM (4GB minimum)

Dedicated graphics card

i7 processor? Although the only £500 i7's don't have dedicated graphics cards, but the i5's do

I have £500 to spend like most people. I saw the beginning of this thread and was quite excited about the Acer Aspire 5755G:

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5755G_1175154.html

But it's sold out! Probably because of this thread!

I take it saveonlaptops is the best place to look though?

When I bought that Acer Aspire it only cost 350 I think! And it's still going strong now! I would recommend saveonlaptops though, they always seem to do good deals. With 500 pound you should be able to find a good laptop that's on sale. Never thought that when I started this thread it would get almost 1,000 posts!

With users commenting on how difficult it is to read certain texts of the game in full HD screens 15.6 or 17 "inches which is what they use existing laptops, you still want to buy one to play this game?

Sigames not give solutions to the size of the text, or what is the same: No laptops supports.

Do not buy this game thinking portable unless sigames say something about the font size for this year ...

Oh how i love that aspire.. and now when I need a new one, it's not even in stock lol

That being said... anyone come across any decent deals on desktops recently? will have to include the whole package, monitor and OS etc..

budget is flexible but £500-800 would be decent

Do you think they will get the 5755G in stock again at some point, or should I start looking at other ones? And would everyone recommend the Acer brand, particularly for FM and gaming?

Partly due to me lol. I think I must have post at least 50 times in this thread asking for advice  I finally settled on a Dell i7 desktop in February this year.

It was mentioned in the recent FM 14 video blog that you will be able to zoom in to make the fonts bigger this year.

It was said in the last video game that will optimize everything for best performance, including research staff and players. Does fm 14 will come quicker for even old settings? Here I use a 2.4 i5 8gb ram, but with graphics card intel graphics 3000

New poster! In dire need of a new laptop, have been for about a year - so I thought I'd get my act together and buy a decent enough laptop FM14. Problem is, I have no idea where to start. I have a budget of between £350-500 really.. I could probably go a bit higher if needs must.

Had a quick search and found this one http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/pavilion-15-e092ea-15-6-laptop-red-21449714-pdt.html

But it seems like the processor is too slow for FM14? Would the fact it's quad-core make any difference? It's got 8GB of RAM and a dedicated graphics card as well.. I'm just a tad worried about processor speed - would it run FM14 fine? Any recommendations on laptops within my budget would be great as well!

I think I would pick this one http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/hp-envy-m6-1310sa-15-6-laptop-21449717-pdt.html

Lots more memory and hard disk space in return for a slightly worse CPU. The thing is the gap between the two CPUs is not huge, so performance shouldn't be noticeably different, and the increased ram and hdd will let you do a lot more with the computer.

That's actually not a bad computer if that's your budget. I mean of course you don't expect super smooth speeds, and this is probably the best you can do with this budget. If you want to step up, this is a good deal http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/hp-envy-m6-1310sa-15-6-laptop-21449717-pdt.html but again, that's adding an extra £100 which is quite a bit considering your initial budget.

I know this is nothing compared to some of the other machines mentioned here, but would this be any good? It's on sale in Sainsburys for £299. I only run a few countries at a time usually, don't need the full database and prefer the overhead dots view to the highlight engine. Any advice greatly appreciated!

Hi there, what are people's opinions on http://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-15r-se-7520/pd?oc=cn15s17&model_id=inspiron-15r-se-7520?

Is it good value for money, or are there better laptops for around that price? It seems to have a decent enough processor to run FM fast at least.

That looks like a pretty decent computer you picked. Don't think you'd be able to do much better in terms of balance (quality vs power of the hardware), especially with the support you get from buying it off them directly.

Personally, I love the ASUS N56 series. It's sleek and powerful http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/asus-n56.htm but the specs aren't exactly stunning.

But Lenovos are very powerful for the price http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/lenovo-z580.htm

this acer is also good value http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_V3-571G_1318329.html

They should all do what you like if you're not looking for anything too flash and just want a good, solid laptop that can play FM and also work on for several years. They are even good enough to play most other games you might want to try.

As a point of reference, my own laptop is similar to the Acer and I play I think over 20 leagues, with maybe 10 active countries. But as you know, it depends on how long you can endure the loading times. I find mine bearable, especially because I play quite slowly anyway and also because I tend to play other games/watch videos/read while I play.

Thats what I thought after a day researching! Bought off Dell last time, and had a good experience. Using Dell's 7% coupon brings it down to £600, so for anyone currently in the market, take a look :) Battery power's not the best if that's important to you, but I usually run off charge anyway

Not sure if anybody has seen this yet,

but found this quite useful

http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=8579&game=Football%20Manager%202014

I tried that link with the Acer V3-571G:

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_V3-571G_1318329.html

and it came up with:

CPU - 10/10

GFX - 4/10

RAM - 9/10

Should I be concerned about the GFX 4/10? I expected that to score well with it being a dedicated card with 2GB memory.

The GT710M can run Battlefield 3 ok according to this video:

It should be fine for FM which is far less demanding.

I'm not sure I trust that gamedebate site, particularly on the video score. If you've got a dedicated graphics card, unless FM14 throws a massive curveball when it arrives, you'll be fine. Even some integrated cards will work.

Yeah I would hope that a £600 laptop would at least be able to handle the next few iterations of FM. My only slight concern with laptops is that they appear to be a lot harder to upgrade than desktops, so I suppose a laptop would be time-limited, whereas a desktop could theoretically do FM indefinitely

Display: 15.4 inch, 16:10, 1280x800 pixels

HDD: 120 GB

These are the minimum requirements for FM2014:

PC System Requirements

OS: Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 Intel Core AMD Athlon XP: 1.6GHz+ V/7/8: 2.2GHz+

Memory: 1 GB RAM

Graphics: NVidia GeForce FX 5900 Ultra ATI Radeon 9800 Intel GMA X3100 128MB VRAM

DirectX: Version 9.0c

Network: Broadband Internet connection

Hard Drive: 3 GB available space

So yes, you can run one league on that computer, but reading this review http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/laptops/fujitsu-siemens-amilo-pro-v3515-review-49293952/ makes me feel that it is not worth buying unless you are on a super super tight budget. If you are, it should do fine but expect to have to buy a new one for the year after next, if not next year. For the price it is good but I would advise you to try to push your budget up to at least £250

This notebook will run fm 14 in a good speed? is a good system for gaming? http://www.cnet.com/laptops/hp-pavilion-dm4-2191us/4505-3121_7-35167989.html

In my case I have 8GB of memory.

I love to play fm with about 50,000 players loaded.

Yes, it should be able to play fine. But it is not a particularly strong system for gaming, judging by the graphics performance. It's actually quite an old model, so I'm assuming that you already own it? Keep it for 1-2 more years then maybe buy a new one.

If you mean whether this can play FM14 it should be able to quite easily. But I wouldn't go too much over the list price for it. If you look here http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/products/area/solgaming you'll see much stronger computers for slightly higher prices.

Thanks. It would be exactly at the list price. I see that website is based in the UK, I'm in Canada, not sure if that matters for shipping etc

Yes I have this notebook, I made a bad purchase at the beginning of last year. Well I found the fm 12 real quick, now 13 fm the days passed I found it very slow, and only slightly improved with patches, especially the closing window transferênciasé very slow processing, the days take much longer to pass than 12 ms. I do not care about graphics, game in 2d, like the days pass at a good speed, and I play with a few countries and several playable in view only, usually very customize before creating a game, players carry specific to a particular region and so on.

To the expectation that fm 14 is faster than the 13, it seems that it has been optimized :)

what about thoughts on this one?

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Hewlett_Packard_a1-D1L25EA/version.asp#top

HP Pavilion 14, with 8GB of RAM - surely enough to run FM14 right?

It is enough to run FM of course but RAM is not an indicator how well or how fast it will run. First indicator is CPU then GPU and for RAM the minimum nowadays (win 7 and 8) is 8GB. For the price, the laptop you linked is okay and FM will run good.

Is it still worth it at 700 or are there better for that price?

I'm not familiar with any Canadian websites that sell laptops, but you could have a look at these: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?atclk=Memory%2fRam_8GB&ci=6782&N=4110474287+4294948892+4294948925+4294948924+4294948923

They are I think based in New York and they ship world wide (I had mine shipped from them to New Zealand). Their items are fairly good value, you can use it to compare to your local stores and websites.

Great choice if you are ready to spend that much. One downside for me personally is that this powerful laptop would gain much by an SSD drive. Otherwise, the processor, the GPU and the memory are high end.

Yeah i decided to take the plunge and treat myself. got a Samsung 840 PRO Series 250GB SSD on order too. just cant seem to find a definitive answer as to wether it has a second drive bay or not. If not the SSD is going to live in the desktop.

It looks like they bumped up the price because the screen has been upgraded. Previously, the screen was not full HD and now it is. It is worth the extra £50 if you value screen resolution in my opinion. The value is still good, many computers with similar specs are around the same price and again, buying from them directly gives you some good service.

If there isn't a separate drive bay and you can deal with using the CD drive externally, you can always get a hard drive caddy.

It depends on what you mean. Generally the performance levels are increased, and you can also run more processes apart from the game if you choose so.

guys any thoughts on this - advice very welcome

It doesn't look like it has a dedicated video card so might struggle with the 3D mode. As well as that, it doesn't seem to be quite worth the money for a refurbished model. What will you use it for besides FM? And how long are you looking to keep this computer for? And what is your budget? Was there any reason you picked this laptop in particular?

8GB of RAM is good, but FM doesn't quite need it, especially if you can get a better CPU and graphics card if you choose less RAM.
