New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Not doing anything specific Barside, but I do like to keep my laptop (which I use for FM) clean and tidy etc.

I did a stress test with it once as well, to see how much the extra stuff I use i.e the mega facepack etc adds to the stress on the system and it was quite significant really.

Ram is cheap... as in, dirt cheap.... no game in the world will use anywhere close to 16gb ram... if a game uses more than 4gb.. it's doing something wrong.

FM will only use a couple and on a decent day, with all leagues running and a 210,000 player database mine will use 1gb ram.

So forget about buying a machine for how much ram it has... you can double an 8gb ram machine for less than a saturday night out in the pub.

While not the best example, it still shows my thoughts perfectly...

https://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/system/weekly_sales_II

That for instance, has a faster CPU, better ram, a good graphics card, liquid cooling (which i like) and lots of room for upgrading cheaply... and it's at least a few 100 quid cheaper.

Sure you don't get your SSD, but that's the point, you can configure to what you need..

Still sure you need more ram? add some more....

Want a passing cooling system? swap it.

I guess my point is, buying from Dell gives you limited configuration to your needs and you also have no control whatsoever in the quality of components they use.

Excellent, many thanks mate - very much appreciated.

I posted on here last Xmas ish in need of a new Laptop.

I was recommended a beast of a Lenovo but I had over things to pay over Xmas, so I just ended up buying a cheap laptop for the meantime.

Anyway I am now thinking about buying this Laptop for £510

ASUS N56VM

Screen size - 15.6 in - 1920 x 1080

Processor - Intel Core i7 3610QM - 2.2 GHz

RAM - 8 GB

Hard Drive - 1 TB

Operating System - Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) .

Optical Drive - Blu-Ray

Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M Optimus

Warranty - 30 Day warranty

The only thing about this is that it has a broken SD card reader (that's why it's cheaper) I've checked on the saveonlaptops website and the exact same Laptop with a smaller hard drive (750gb instead of 1tb) costs £729.

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ASUS_N56VM-S4034V_1218891.html

I'm not really bothered about the SD card reader tbh, but would you say it is worth that price? I'm not really sure how much of a big thing the SD card reader is or effects the value if it's broken.

Anyway, I'll be using the Laptop for video editing/ watching films/listening to music/ some photoshop work and the only game I will be playing is Football Manager. So I want a Laptop with full hd/a good sound system.. and the above Laptop has both of these.. but I thought I'd get a 2nd opinion first.

Reading around, this Asus is apparently one of the best built aswell for that price range. (not plastic waiting to snap/crack like the Dell Inspiron etc)

Ok, I bought the Asus N56vm which arrived today.

Everything seems ok, but it was supposed to have a 1tb hdd. But I have 2 hard disks totalling 905gb (os(c; ) 372 gb and data(d; ) 533 gb).

I know that the Laptop fully formatted capacity will take up some of the 1tb and that it would be less, but even so, that seems low to me.

I'm not an expert when it comes to Laptop specs etc, but have I been a sent a Laptop that does not have a 1tb hard drive, or am I just jumping to conclusions? Thanks.

Thinking of going for an Apple MacBook Pro.

http://www.johnlewis.com/apple-macbook-pro-md103b-a-intel-quad-core-i7-2-3ghz-500gb-4gb-ram-with-15-4-inch-display/p231656817. Not sure if I should splash out and get 8GB RAM and 1GB dedicated graphics card? I need to have a limit somewhere though regarding costs.

Will this be good enough to run FM2012 for a long game? My current save game constantly crashes (10 seasons in - 341,000KB) on my 4 year old HP laptop (integrated graphics card and 3GB RAM), even in 2D. It runs OK on the wife's laptop which has a dedicated graphics card and 6GB RAM. NOt sure if the crashing is down to memory or graphics (runtime errors)? I have had to start a new game to be able to play. I want to make sure whatever I buy will be able to cope with a large game. Moving to Apple as I cannot get on with Windows 8.

according to what? try them both first fella.

The 3570k is easily overclockable and the stock chip has much better optimisation for gaming which the op said was their main aim, specifically single focus apps, rather than multitasking.

the 3770 tends to overheat while gaming a lot more readily than the k chips, which will certainly be the case with first person shooters.

Fm is all about the cpu, and the apple has a decent enough i7, you'll be fine with it. Although I know very little about macs so may not be the best person to give any advice on it.

I was meaning overall, and if not overclocking  I think the hyper threading feature on the i7 would be very useful for FM though, something the i5 doesn't do.

Hyper-threading is only of any use in FM if you plan to run competitions on full detail processing, if the game is run on the default or lower settings then any HT capability is pretty much wasted on FM.

The difference between current laptops is my wifes is

Intel i3 2.2 GHz

6GB Ram

64 bit

Graphics - Intel Graphics Family

- Radeon HD6490M

Windows 7

and mine is

Intel core 2 duo 2.0Ghz

3GB Ram

32 bit

Graphics - Mobile Intel 4

Windows Vista

If issue is only processor then the two are not far off each other are they?

I just want a laptop for playing FM2012 without issues. Reason for the Apple was to get away from "issues" with Windows.

Yeah I read about that a while back and as you said, it does help when using full detail processing although I know not everyone uses full detail processing.

Laptop died while playing FM, so looking for a new machine. Most likely going for a PC this time instead of a laptop.

Old laptop had a hard time running even 5 leagues with small database, this time I'd like to enjoy the game to the fullest: all leagues loaded, full database. What's the minimum I'd need to run the game smooth as silk with all things loaded?

I too am looking for a new laptop.

My last one didn't have the best spec, but it did the job fine.

Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz CPU; 3GB RAM; 250GB HDD; 15.6in HD Ready screen

Now I'm looking for something like this:

Intel i3/i5 2.4 GHz

4-6GB Ram

64 bit

15.6in display

Will this be too hard to find for £350?

Currently looking at getting a new laptop after my 4 year old macbook pro has started giving up the ghost. E.g. disk drive has packed up and cannot update the OS to be able to play the latest FM. Hopefully I can get some money for this still as parts or repair from somewhere maybe ebay?

Considering going back to windows as apples are so expensive.

So I've been looking in this thread and other places the best I can see are these two (have a budget of upto £700) for a something thats going to be able to play FM for 3 or 4 years or so no problems if possible:

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ASUS_N55SL-S1188V_1216770.html

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ASUS_N56_1361862.html

Not really interested in playing the game in 3D as I've only ever used commetary or 2d before.

Any offers around on laptops at the moment, apart from the above mentioned?

If your not worried about 3d then your primary focus is the processor. The i7 is obvisouly better then the i5 but for the money your spending get a 3rd generation i7 processor.

Cheers mate hadn't seen the MSI one am I right in thinking this one is pretty much superior in eveyway to the Asus one? More memory, better processor, larger HDD, better graphics card and windows 8 instead of 7 or am I reading it wrong? Haven't heard of the company before either.

Pretty much, MSI are pretty popular now, especially known for gaming laptops, plus I am guessing you would have a standard 12 months warranty.

It is also worth mentioning that if you want a laptop just for FM that will still be quick in 3 or 4 years then an i5 will still be good. It all depends how much money you can afford.

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_V3-571G_1266041.html

Nearly £200 cheaper and would play FM really nicely over the next few years. I have a laptop with a second generation i3 processor, 4gb of ram and integrated graphics. Plays FM12 quickly with the 3d match engine and I am 20 years into a long term game. Just food for thought.

Hi guys, I'm looking for a new laptop to replace a 4-5 year old toshiba. I've come across this, what do you reckon? I'm not that familiar with spec and it seems great apart from perhaps the graphics card? Hoping to get one from John lewis as I can get discount. It's probably the top of my budget too. http://m.johnlewis.com/mt/www.johnlewis.com/lenovo-ideapad-z580-laptop-intel-core-i5-2-6ghz-8gb-ram-1tb-15-6-grey/p231848021

Currently own a laptop with a Intel Centino Duo processor and my bro in law is going to be giving me his old laptop as he has since bought a little notebook for internet use only his old one is an Intel Pentium Dual Core processor. I was wondering what your opinion was between the two and what would be quicker. People tell me the one he is giving me will have the better processor- I use my laptop solely for FM so that is the most important component to aid with the speed of the game!

I wont pretend to be a computer expert in the slightest. But hows the MSI one in terms of non Footy manager games. Ill be honest im 28, have a 1 year old now so my times limited. But I do however use my laptop daily pretty much in the free time I get. The only games ive ever played are Footy manager, simcity, rollercoaster tycoon etc....would this laptop be a good option as im currently saving to replace my dated dell one thats done me so well throughout the fm series.

I'm not actually sure if FM is supported on Chromebook OS, the screen size is certainly not supported by SI & the CPU is below minimum spec's.

Not technically minded at all - but i want a new laptop, that obivously plays FM very smoothly:

Would i need to go higher spec than: this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-Chromebook-Celeron-Integrated-Graphics/dp/B009VHRMOU/ref=sr_1_23?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1365775943&sr=1-23&keywords=laptop+with+windows+8

Nah that ain't powerful enough.

Well so far on my newly aquired laptop (Handed down to me) it has Pentium Dual core, my old laptop which was Centrino Duo actually had RAm that was the same.. Result! So far Windows (without SP1 at the mo) and FM are running nicely. The laptop came with a 1gb stick and I tried running FM with that and it was really bad!! Throwing my 2 1gb sticks in instead of the one in there worked a treat and my 2D matches are smooth and the screen quality is noticably better.

My next question. The RAM in the new PC was 667mhz and the one I have put in was 533mhz. Now the RAM obviously works and doesnt seem to slow down at all but I can get a 1gb stick for £11.99 and was thinking of pairing up a new one to match up with the 1gb stick that came with it. That way both sticks of memory would be 667 mhz (instead of both currently being 533mhz), would anyone here be able to confirm if I wold notice any difference at all

I'm thinking of getting a new laptop. I've never had a laptop before, I've always had a desktop, but it is a good 6 years old now.

Specs:

Vista - Intel Core 2 CPU 6600 @ 2.4 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, 32 bit OS.

I really only use my desktop PC to play FM now, browse the internet etc.

With this in mind what do you recommend, do I need to upgrade and if so, to what please?

Thanks.

PS - what do you think of this one:

Upgrading PC's is really rough; buying a new one is a bit iffy. As for the link, it's just a ton of buzzwords but it's not actually that good of a PC, though as far as prebuilt prices go it's not as much of a rip off as some things I've seen. If you have a friend who's handy with PC's have him help you put together a PC built from scratch; You'll come across far cheaper than anything prebuilt.

most modern medium spec lasptops will play FM fine.

The game changer is a SSD drive, Having one of them instead of a mechanical drive makes the difference in booting up fm, saving etc night and day

Went for the MSI CX61 as advised in the end. Being delieved tomorrow :D will let you know how FM plays on it incase anyone else was looking at this laptop.

Spec

Intel® Core™ i7-3630QM Quad Core Processor

15.6" HD Screen

Microsoft Windows 8 64bit

8GB DDR3 RAM

1000GB HDD

DVD-Rewriter

Dedicated GT 645M 2GB Graphics

HDMI

Bluetooth

USB3

CX61 0NF-638UK

Brushed Mineral Grey

Went for the cheaper version without the blue-ray drive as wouldn't use it. It was £599.97.

Thinking of adding / swapping in an SSD drive at somepoint but unsure how difficult this would be.

Hi, could someone please recommend me a laptop, with a max budget of £500. I only play FM at the moment but i'd also like to start playing minecraft.

I've got no idea about laptop specs so I may ask some questions that may seem simple.

Bought the laptop above a month or so ago and its perfect form FM. It's a little over your budget though at £599.97 but its worth it. Can even play most of the new games on high detail.

Hi guys,

I do quite a lot of travel abroad and I'm thinking of getting a new smaller computer to take with me instead of my current laptop which is very powerfull but also very heavy. I was thinking of getting the new ASUS Transformer Book, do you think it will run FM13? The specs are:

Intel® Core™ i5 3337U/3317U Processor

Windows 8 Pro

Memory DDR3 1600 MHz SDRAM, incorporated 4 GB

Screen 13.3" 16:9 IPS FHD (1920x1080) Glare panel

Graphic Board Integrated Intel® HD Graphics 4000

Hard Drive 500GB HDD com 128 G SSD

For me the ability of transforming a desktop into a tablet is very useful but it would be aplus if it could run FM13 for those hotel nights. Can someone help out? Thanks.

If your looking at a PC, build your own, you can end up getting a much better pc for a lower price and there is plenty of guides online which can help you, its surprisingly easy to do! If its a laptop your going for I wouldn't worry too much, if your spending 600-800 pound pretty much all of them will be able to run FM with a lot of leagues and other games such as fifa!
