New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Having read this thread, and as I understand it, a good laptop to have (to include future proofing) for around the £500/600 mark needs...

Intel i5

2.0Ghz +

8GB RAM

750 GB HD

Dedicated graphics card

15" screen

CD/DVD drive

Is that right?

Therefore which of these would be best...? http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Products/cat/laptops/refine/max~600$min~450$46562~144410$46565~144435$46563~67690$46564~144440$46564~148015$46562~144409$46562~148001$46566~144438$46567~59712$46572~148095

Any other options gents?

I got a brand new "custom" (it wasn't really, as most options only had one choice) Dell laptop for £639 or somewhere around that mark

Core i7 quad, 8Gb RAM, 1Tb hard drive, 1Gb graphics of some kind, 17.6" screen. If you can get that for what I paid, then some of the ones quoted above for around the 600 mark seem like daylight robbery.

EDIT: And of course, I've now changed the processor to be a model that isn't completely imaginary (i8)...

Hi guys, I'm looking at getting a new laptop. I have a budget of around £350 and I want something that will be able to run football manager at a decent speed with a couple of different leagues running instead of just english leagues. I have a couple of options available, would you be able to recommend any of these?

Thanks for everyone who has contributed to this thread as it has been invaluable for me. I am hoping to order a new laptop this weekend and to be honest despite not been a total technophobe I always thought it was the memory not the processor that was more important!!.

I have got the spec from the Acer on the first page of the thread and am using it as a starting point. I just wanted to check a couple of points. I am going to try to get an i7 processor and have noticed there are different versions. Am I correct in assuming the the higher the number the newer version of i7. I have seen 2670 and 3240.

The same question on graphics, I have seen a GT540 and GT630 is the higher number newer or better?

Should I also stick to windows 7 as opposed to 8 if possible?

I am looking forward to having a decent computer to run FM on as I am currently running it on a 7 year old desktop

Thanks in advance

the i7 is obviously a lot better, but the price hike is quite a bit for the improvement tbh...

If you want to push the boat out to an i7.. consider one of these:

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Products/cat/Laptops/refine/46562~144409$46567~59712

you'll find some with the same i7 chip, dedicated graphic cards and an SSD for much cheaper, the downside is less ram but frankly, ram is so cheap these days, you can still get one of those lappy's and upgrade to 8gb ram for around £30 or so extra. If you email or phone that website, they'll no doubt upgrade it for you :)

just found this one for a friend who's looking to buy and thought i'd post it here incase anyone's looking:

Nice spot mate, how did you find it? It doesn't come up when you search the website for it. The only one that comes up with that spec is £599 and it looks identical. Mistake by the website?

EDIT : It's ok I've figured it out. You can only get that laptop at that price if you go via Welshace's link. It's exactly the same as the £599 but it's some kind of offer. Not a bad price at all seeing as it's £100 off.

Found this in Australia, model should be the same over in the UK, pretty good for under £800.

Asus R550CM - CJ095P

AU$1076 (i7 cpu) , AU$917 (i5 cpu).

Cpu. - i7 / i5

Gpu. - Geforce GT635M 2GB

Ram. - 8GB DDR3

HD. - 750GB

SSD. - 24GB

OD. - DVD Writer

Screen. - 15.6

OS. - Windows 8

http://www.cplonline.com.au/laptops-notebooks/asus-r550cm-cj059p-core-i7-windows-8-pro-touch-notebook-with-2g-dedicated-graphics.html

For value of money, would personaly go for the i5 model unless you will be using grafix suites or such to take advantage of the i7.

Bought this laptop and received it yesterday. Big thanks for the tip, I was due an upgrade after having my old lappie for over 4 years and this one is working very well! Be aware though if you do buy this one you'll be uninstalling bloatware and installing windows updates for a whole day but now i've got it nice and clean it's running really smoothly!

Just ordered this laptop http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ASUS_N56VM_1361862.html#DetailTop how is FM likely to run on this? Im not really up to speed on how computers work.

Hi Lordy,

That's the laptop I just got, it runs FM really smoothly. The only real "negative" is that the laptop ships with a lot of bloatware so you'll most likely be spending a whole day updating windows, removing crap little apps that ASUS add into their laptops. However once I sorted it out it's been a dream so far plus I think the laptop looks really nice and the sound is really really good :)

cheers for that, yeah i saw you put it up on here and it did look really good, got my brother to look at the spec and he reckons its very good but was just wondering what it plays fm like. I presume 3D match engine runs really well and you can have loads of leagues loaded up?

Well it's a big thanks to welschace for finding it, I thought it was an error first but value for money it's a great deal. Yeah well my last lappie was 512MB graphics card so it's a massive step up for myself and it looks great 3D wise. I normally don't have loads of leagues up anyways but I think I'm running 10 countries and about 30 leagues and it runs really quick day to day :)

I would like some help choosing a new laptop. I have shortlisted 3 so far both ASUS, but not sure if they are future proof by that I mean will last about 4 years, even if that means I have to upgrade RAM or a SSD later down the line.

What I need the laptop for:

Uni - Haven't started yet but will be doing an BSc Economics. I doubt I will require an specialist programs for the course other than Microsoft Office.

Football Manager - This should really be my number one reason as I am FM crazy. The game I believe is CPU heavy and not to heavy on the GPU. This brings me back to future proof, I'd like to be able to play the next few series of FM without much slow down.

Streaming - Youtube, netflixs etc

I have a budget of I'd say £800 and would like a 14".

The three ASUS laptops are:

I hope someone can find me better opinions if possible.

Thanks

Ramie

Hey Justified,

I was thinking of getting this laptop too, but noticed it comes with windows 7 instead of 8. But what is bloatware and is it easy enough to identify and remove?

Hi Spikester,

I honestly don't mind the windows 7 part, I don't think it'd be a problem buying windows 8 and installing it yourself but I don't envisage there being any problem keeping it at 7. Bloatware is basically programs, made by the computers manufacturer, which are installed on this system. ASUS laptops are very well known for it but I don't have a problem uninstalling them or if you're thinking of buying windows 8 you could just clean wipe your hard drive, re-partition to 1 drive and install windows 8 and then you'd basically have no bloatware at all on the system.

I posted on here last Xmas ish in need of a new Laptop.

I was recommended a beast of a Lenovo but I had over things to pay over Xmas, so I just ended up buying a cheap laptop for the meantime.

Anyway I am now thinking about buying this Laptop for £510

ASUS N56VM

Screen size - 15.6 in - 1920 x 1080

Processor - Intel Core i7 3610QM - 2.2 GHz

RAM - 8 GB

Hard Drive - 1 TB

Operating System - Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) .

Optical Drive - Blu-Ray

Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M Optimus

Warranty - 30 Day warranty

The only thing about this is that it has a broken SD card reader (that's why it's cheaper) I've checked on the saveonlaptops website and the exact same Laptop with a smaller hard drive (750gb instead of 1tb) costs £729.

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ASUS_N56VM-S4034V_1218891.html

The only issue with this product is the SD Memory card slot does not work. When you put a card in there is a good chance it will get stuck.

I'm not really bothered about the SD card reader tbh, but would you say it is worth that price? I'm not really sure how much of a big thing the SD card reader is or effects the value if it's broken.

Anyway, I'll be using the Laptop for video editing/ watching films/listening to music/ some photoshop work and the only game I will be playing is Football Manager. So I want a Laptop with full hd/a good sound system.. and the above Laptop has both of these.. but I thought I'd get a 2nd opinion first.

Reading around, this Asus is apparently one of the best built aswell for that price range. (not plastic waiting to snap/crack like the Dell Inspiron etc)

I'm looking at a new PC after my old one died.

Have read most of the posts on here and quite a few people seem to know what they are talking about and was wondering if I could ask for help.

My student loan has just gone into my bank :) so I do have quite a bit of money right now but, being a student, I have to live off it for the next few months so can't splash out too much.

£400-500 is my budget really.

I'd be using the PC for general stuff, some Uni work and the main game I play is FM. Don't need it for any of the really high-end gaming but do want a PC that will last a good few years without the need to upgrade.

Could someone in the know take a look at these two deals on Amazon and let me know what they think?

I don't know a massive amount about computers but they seem like good deals and have received very good reviews on Amazon.

Any help or any others people can recommend? Prefer desktop to laptop.

Thanks

edit: yes, I do know the 2nd one comes without an operating system.

I'd like to thank everyone who is guiding us towards the purchase of a suitable laptop/pc. I've found this thread particularly helpful in steering me towards what I need or don't need. Particular thanks must go to Welsh Ace who initially got me clearing out my mind ( and I do live in Caerphilly, after all; but Jordan, I'm a lifelong Blackpool supporter!) so I could focus a bit more clearly on what I needed. After a while, perhaps unimaginatively, I've chosen the Dell Inspiron R given as best buy in PC Advisor at £499. I got £55 off as a result of using a Quidco voucher and a further £22 through going via Quidco. So at £422 I'm more than happy; thanks everyone.

I went for the 2nd one in my post, 5 up from this one and ordered Windows 7 64-bit with it. £470 total and it all should arrive within 2 days.

From the reviews, apart from a bit of a noisy fan, it's a great buy and I'm sure it'll suit me perfectly.

I'll come back on here to let people know what it's like in case they are on the lookout for a desktop too.

Rather than start a new thread, I will post here, as advised by NF in the FMCU forum, where I usually hang out.

I am looking to buy a new desktop PC, though I am not tech minded at all. My budget is £800 ideally, but I can go to £1,200 is required without any issues. I only require the desktop as I have the monitor etc already. It needs to be ready built as, like I said, I am not technically minded.

I was having a look on some websites and I saw this PC. For those that know their stuff can you give me your honest opinion please, before I commit?

Thanks for your time.

Daz, before buying that, I would suggest you give us an idea of what your needs are for the machine as frankly, that Dell has a ridiculous set of components that cater to a very specific need...

24 gb ram?!!!

a half decent but under optimized graphics card?!

The problem you will have is that people will obviously tell you its awesome and yeah, to an extent it will be, but you will be throwing £100's away unnecessarily unless you need all of that gubbins, which I would bet you don't.

Oh yeah, 24GB is way overboard but the system itself is great, there are much cheaper customisations of it. He has linked the dearest one which is indeed overboard.

So 16GB of RAM would be sufficient? What sort of graphics card would I want? I do delve into FPS games from time to time and they are graphics heavy a lot of the time. 16GB of RAM machines can be bought for under £800 and this I would prefer.

I use my PC for:

  • Football Manager (I load over 25 nations, plus all their leagues to the lowest tier)
  • FPS games that are graphics hungry
  • Work though as this uses MS Office, I guess it won't require much power.

Ram is cheap... as in, dirt cheap.... no game in the world will use anywhere close to 16gb ram... if a game uses more than 4gb.. it's doing something wrong.

FM will only use a couple and on a decent day, with all leagues running and a 210,000 player database mine will use 1gb ram.

So forget about buying a machine for how much ram it has... you can double an 8gb ram machine for less than a saturday night out in the pub.

While not the best example, it still shows my thoughts perfectly...

https://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/system/weekly_sales_II

That for instance, has a faster CPU, better ram, a good graphics card, liquid cooling (which i like) and lots of room for upgrading cheaply... and it's at least a few 100 quid cheaper.

Sure you don't get your SSD, but that's the point, you can configure to what you need..

Still sure you need more ram? add some more....

Want a passing cooling system? swap it.

I guess my point is, buying from Dell gives you limited configuration to your needs and you also have no control whatsoever in the quality of components they use.

How are you managing to achieve such low RAM usage? Using a very similar game size (I do not run Asian or African leagues) I see FM using 1.8-2.3gb, granted I have every league running in full detail but to see you claiming a mere 1gb of RAM usages is intriguing.
