forameuss Posted February 8, 2013 Share Posted February 8, 2013 I got a brand new "custom" (it wasn't really, as most options only had one choice) Dell laptop for £639 or somewhere around that mark Core i7 quad, 8Gb RAM, 1Tb hard drive, 1Gb graphics of some kind, 17.6" screen. If you can get that for what I paid, then some of the ones quoted above for around the 600 mark seem like daylight robbery. I am hoping to order a new laptop this weekend and to be honest despite not been a total technophobe I always thought it was the memory not the processor that was more important!!. I have got the spec from the Acer on the first page of the thread and am using it as a starting point. I just wanted to check a couple of points. I am going to try to get an i7 processor and have noticed there are different versions. Am I correct in assuming the the higher the number the newer version of i7. I have seen 2670 and 3240. The same question on graphics, I have seen a GT540 and GT630 is the higher number newer or better? Should I also stick to windows 7 as opposed to 8 if possible? Big thanks for the tip, I was due an upgrade after having my old lappie for over 4 years and this one is working very well! The only real "negative" is that the laptop ships with a lot of bloatware so you'll most likely be spending a whole day updating windows, removing crap little apps that ASUS add into their laptops. Well it's a big thanks to welschace for finding it, I thought it was an error first but value for money it's a great deal. Yeah well my last lappie was 512MB graphics card so it's a massive step up for myself and it looks great 3D wise. I have shortlisted 3 so far both ASUS, but not sure if they are future proof by that I mean will last about 4 years, even if that means I have to upgrade RAM or a SSD later down the line. What I need the laptop for: Uni - Haven't started yet but will be doing an BSc Economics. I doubt I will require an specialist programs for the course other than Microsoft Office. Football Manager - This should really be my number one reason as I am FM crazy. The game I believe is CPU heavy and not to heavy on the GPU. This brings me back to future proof, I'd like to be able to play the next few series of FM without much slow down. Streaming - Youtube, netflixs etc I have a budget of I'd say £800 and would like a 14". Hi Spikester, I honestly don't mind the windows 7 part, I don't think it'd be a problem buying windows 8 and installing it yourself but I don't envisage there being any problem keeping it at 7. Bloatware is basically programs, made by the computers manufacturer, which are installed on this system. ASUS laptops are very well known for it but I don't have a problem uninstalling them or if you're thinking of buying windows 8 you could just clean wipe your hard drive, re-partition to 1 drive and install windows 8 and then you'd basically have no bloatware at all on the system. Optical Drive - Blu-Ray Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M Optimus Warranty - 30 Day warranty The only thing about this is that it has a broken SD card reader (that's why it's cheaper) I've checked on the saveonlaptops website and the exact same Laptop with a smaller hard drive (750gb instead of 1tb) costs £729. http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ASUS_N56VM-S4034V_1218891.html The only issue with this product is the SD Memory card slot does not work. When you put a card in there is a good chance it will get stuck. I'm not really bothered about the SD card reader tbh, but would you say it is worth that price? Anyway, I'll be using the Laptop for video editing/ watching films/listening to music/ some photoshop work and the only game I will be playing is Football Manager. So I want a Laptop with full hd/a good sound system.. and the above Laptop has both of these.. but I thought I'd get a 2nd opinion first. Reading around, this Asus is apparently one of the best built aswell for that price range. I've found this thread particularly helpful in steering me towards what I need or don't need. Particular thanks must go to Welsh Ace who initially got me clearing out my mind ( and I do live in Caerphilly, after all; but Jordan, I'm a lifelong Blackpool supporter!) so I could focus a bit more clearly on what I needed. After a while, perhaps unimaginatively, I've chosen the Dell Inspiron R given as best buy in PC Advisor at £499. I got £55 off as a result of using a Quidco voucher and a further £22 through going via Quidco. So at £422 I'm more than happy; thanks everyone. From the reviews, apart from a bit of a noisy fan, it's a great buy and I'm sure it'll suit me perfectly. So 16GB of RAM would be sufficient? What sort of graphics card would I want? I do delve into FPS games from time to time and they are graphics heavy a lot of the time. 16GB of RAM machines can be bought for under £800 and this I would prefer. I use my PC for: Football Manager (I load over 25 nations, plus all their leagues to the lowest tier) FPS games that are graphics hungry Work though as this uses MS Office, I guess it won't require much power. Welshace Posted April 4, 2013 Share Posted April 4, 2013 Ram is cheap... as in, dirt cheap.... no game in the world will use anywhere close to 16gb ram... if a game uses more than 4gb.. it's doing something wrong. FM will only use a couple and on a decent day, with all leagues running and a 210,000 player database mine will use 1gb ram. So forget about buying a machine for how much ram it has... you can double an 8gb ram machine for less than a saturday night out in the pub. Sure you don't get your SSD, but that's the point, you can configure to what you need.. Still sure you need more ram? add some more.... Want a passing cooling system? swap it. I guess my point is, buying from Dell gives you limited configuration to your needs and you also have no control whatsoever in the quality of components they use. How are you managing to achieve such low RAM usage? Using a very similar game size (I do not run Asian or African leagues) I see FM using 1.8-2.3gb, granted I have every league running in full detail but to see you claiming a mere 1gb of RAM usages is intriguing.
