Hello 👋🏻

I have £500 pound to spend on a new laptop. Problem is that it’s in vouchers that I can spend in Argos, PC World, John Lewis and Debenhams. Can anyone Suggest a decent I5 laptop. I would like to use the 3D match engine too.

My current laptop had just died. Would like to buy a new one basically just to run FM at a decent level with the games in 3d and then basic stuff such as word, excel, internet etc. Ideally looking to spend around £700. Did find this one below, but if anyone, particularly Smurf who seems to know his stuff, could give their opinion or if you can recommend anything else I would be grateful!

I wouldn't hold off any longer. I can't find anything better.

Besides the one I posted. I know the hard drive is smaller but swapping that for a larger one at a different date is definitely viable and easy enough to do.

You could also go external storage in the interim.

But I cannot find anything better.

Cheers for the feedback.

What do you make of this as a cheaper alternative? looks good on paper

I'd still be more on for this

I know it's slightly older processor. And a gen behind.

But - the 7700HQ has a higher base frequency than the 8750H.

For FM it's still largely single core based anyway - so having multiple cores has little gains, as it uses multiple cores to process background matches etc. and it's so fast anyway that having more cores isn't really helping, as it's fast anyway.

The 8750H is 50% faster in multi-core scenarios, but FM I don't know if they are addressing this and or when it may be released. And they probably wouldn't tell us.

IN the end it's up to you. But I'd go for the 7700HQ for FM.

For other games - like graphically intense games, no problem recommending the 8750H - but for FM I'd stick with the 7700HQ at this price range.

Hi, would this laptop run FM to an acceptable standard?

Usually load the big five European leagues, and not hugely bothered about 3D matches looking good.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place but had a look at the different sections and can't find anywhere suitable.

I'm looking for a new laptop (mine really old) preferably a 2 in 1 (double up as tablet, though not essential) I'm not very techy so not sure what sort of RAM and processor etc I'd need.

For FM i would need one that can support the 3d match engine and a large database for all English leagues and top leagues for Spain/Germany/Italy/France.

Other than FM, it would be mainly used for internet browsing/youtube and microsoft office.

Any help with what kind of spec I'd need/recommendations would be much appreciated :)

Problem with tablet computers is that it's difficult to find them with a graphics card, and when you do they are usually very expensive.

What's your budget?

Looks like the same specs.

This is what you would be looking for

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16JD21-068-MSI-Prestige-PL62-7RC-068UK-in-Sliver_2197296.html

It was going for cheaper on other sites. But it's gone up on those sites today.

If you have a larger budget then let me know and find something better.

Nah budgets pretty small, trying to buy it while organising a wedding, not ideal. Cheers for your help, I'll try and save over the next few months for the one you've recommended, would rather spend £600 on one that'll work than £300 on a mediocre one.

Defo.

Or wait til you get all the wedding money and "buy a laptop for the house" - that's what I did...

I'm looking to get a new laptop for FM 2019 as my current laptop has become far too slow at running the game. I'm looking to spend up to £1000 and need a lightweight laptop that's not too heavy as my current one (Dell Latitude E5540) is very bulky and heavy. Does anyone have any suggestions as I'm not sure what is best? Thanks in advance.

CPU is your best option & pretty sure this will install on your motherboard, just need to make sure your PSU is up to scratch.

Thanks for the response

I have a CX600 ATX/EPS 80 PLUS Bronze Power Supply Unit, 600 W

Apparently my motherboard is only recommend for 95 w or something so I looked at this https://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-FD8300WMHKBOX-CPU-Desktop-Processor/dp/B00TR8YL4W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1533571850&sr=8-1&keywords=AMD+8300

do you think it would make a difference ?

There’s not a great deal of difference in single thread performance so unless you tend to increase processing settings above their default level I would not anticipate a significant improvement on what you currently have.

Tha said newer is always better so if the cash is going spare & you do nit want to look at saving for a complete new build the you might as well go for the 8300, you’ll get other benefits outside of FM that could be enough to justify the outlay.

Hi Smurf,

I was going to buy this one as I want a lighter laptop, but it’s no longer in stock. https://www.box.co.uk/80W30036UK-Lenovo-Ideapad-710S-Plus_2103909.html

Do you have any recommendations for a light laptop (13inch screen or smaller is perfect) around £700? Usually run around 5 leagues but watch in 2d only

thanks, you’re legend!

This is worth considering, unloaded cpu frequency is low but Turboboost 2.0 will increase that when under the loads that FM will task to it & the integrated graphics processor is probably a bit better th an the dedicated 940M card.

If you really can afford it without any compromises elsewhere the last one is the best option because of the SSD but if the really is pushing the limits of your budget then go with its little brother as an SSD offers no benefit on FM.

i5 is the best option unless you’re like me & set match processing to full detail on a large league set.

The one downside is that cpu uses turboboost 3.0 which from my own benchmark test results is not utilised by FM on stock cpu settings however you can easily change the trigger point to take advantage of the higher frequency.

The concern I would have with the rig is the 180w power supply, that’s very low & provides little to no headroom for later upgrades such as a dedicated graphics card.

This is good for the price - https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/P0G83EAABU(C)-(Grade-C)-HP-Pavilion-Gaming-15-ak005na_2387189.html

But it's marked as Grade C - and their website doesn't give an explanation as low as Grade C.

You'd need to contact them to find out what condition it's actually in.

And what returns policy would be.

Other than that

Maybe this

But be warned - £400 is a very low budget and the last one posted might struggle a little depedning on your game setup.

Just keep in mind you can 100% get that computer cheaper if you buy the parts separately. Just by eyeballing the parts listed on that page I'd say you can probably get all parts separately for around £130 cheaper.

Yes - you can. And I could. But most people come to this forum and ask advice on pre-built computers because they do not understand what the different parts mean - and the significance it would play in their system.

Suggesting someone build their own, or buy their own parts would be like asking someone to build a wall in the garden. Just buy the bricks and mortar and do it yourself. Some people can do that, and be very good at it, but some wouldn't have a clue.

Same with building a computer, or buying parts for a computer. Most people don't know, that's why they ask and buy prebuilt rigs.

Yes, you can build a computer quite cheaply - but people here are happy to pay a bit extra for someone with the skill and knowledge to build it properly, like a wall in the garden, so after a few years it's still standing.

The motherboard comes with a complete guide on where everything slots in. If they still refuse to learn how to maintain their computer, then they could probably find a tech store near them that will build it for like £15-20 or something. £130 (which is like 15% of the cost of this computer), is absolutely not worth it for the average person. Just stop being lazy and either build it yourself (will take you 2 hours as an absolute beginner watching YouTube tutorials and reading the MoBo manual), or save yourself money and pay someone to build it for you. No reason to spend an extra £130 out of pure laziness. It's just wasteful.
