Thank you for taking the time to do that @Smurf.

I am looking for something that relatively portable even though it will mostly be docked on a desk connected to a monitor. They look quite bulky?

Although I have heard of PC Specialist I have never seen their pricing. They are extremely competitive from first glance!

PCspecialist are hugely popular and I can attest to their quality as i've purchased from them a vast amount of times (close to triple figures for laptops).

The xps 13 weighs 2.6 pounds, while the defiance above weighs 4.4... but you are getting a larger screen on the defiance..

Imo the bulk difference is more than worth it for the upgrade in performance..

Do you have any knowledge on the Recoil 2 range?

The design looks a bit sleeker!

Apologies for the volume of questions.

Well - it's 25mm thickness - and if it's plugged in most the time then all the better. It's a much better rig than what you posted there.

The Recoil range looks slick for sure - however, it only comes in the 15/17 inch - I thought you were looking at 13/14inch laptops.

Haven't had the chance to get hold of one yet, but a collegue has and says he enjoyed it immensely, the specs look fantastic too, the 8750H is a brillint cpu and considering it only weighs around 2kg... I can see why it appeals to you...   Having looked into it, the only downside I can see from them is a pretty average battery capacity, but considering you say you plan to have it mostly plugged in, shouldn't be an issue in the slightest..

I'd say go for it.. the pricing is superb too

Defo the 2nd one by a landslide.

What's your budget though - is that your top end?

Thanks for your feedback @Smurf

Top end budget is probably around £800 - is there anything else you would recommend (appreciate i'm restrictive by the fact i just want to go via pc world). Just want to be able to load the top leagues, have a medium sized database and it to run quickly. I tend to play long saves and fly through the seasons.

Thanks in advance

The best you can get from pcworld in your budget.... which will easily run what you want and a lot more besides...

There may be better deals in store in person though, as pcworld tend to have offers for instore only.

That spec is great for a 14'' screen laptop in that price range...  and it will certainly play the game ok, but as always, it depends on how large a database and how many leagues you like to play with tbh...

Also bare in mind that you have an SSHD there not an SSD ... Also bare in mind that the biggest drawback is that you are mostly looking at U rated cpu's in a notebook that small and while they will boost to a decent working speed, it will largely depend on the cooling solution the laptop has whether its sustainable or whether you might overheat.

I'd be looking at stretching your budget slightly for something like : https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-14A112-090-MSI-GS40-6QE(Phantom)-090UK_1945621.html

(hell you could sell the free headphones that come with it for 50-60 quid too)

Ideally I was but I’ve read that the size isn’t that much different between the two because of the bezel less design of the Recoil screen.

Thank you for your help @Welshace and @Smurf. Very much appreciated!

Apologies, what sort of game setup will I likely get from that spec laptop?

A handful of leagues with large databases? I usually tend to load a couple of divisions from the top European countries.

The cpu is top end... you can run whatever you want to throw at it... 30 leagues on a database with 200k players if you want.

Thanks for the reply. That is stretching the budget a bit too much for me! Would it be advisable to go for a bigger screen to get a better spec for the budget?

Yes, if you can compromise on a larger screen, you get a bit more leaway..

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16J962-1293-MSI-GL62M-7REX-1293UK_2142279.html that is the 15 inch version of the one i linked above basically.. but with better specs again..

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ZX553VD-DM969T-ASUS-ZX553VD-DM969T-Gaming-Laptop_2145527.html even better price

Hi Everyone,

Looking for a laptop as previously had a desktop but as now moved into smaller flat we have less room than before so big tower is out of the question.

@Welshace / @Smurf I do like the look of the Dell Inspiron 5000 you posted above, do you think it would be able to handle around 6/7 leagues with a medium database for example? How long would you think this machine would last playing FM before it needs to be changed?

Is there anything else that's better value for money than this at the moment? I would of liked a 17" screen but it seems for an extra 2" it adds a lot more to the price of gaming laptops.

I assume if you want 8th Generation then this will be over £1k at least? Is there any manufacturs even offering the 8750H CPU yet?

Both of your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you :)

The dell posted above will handle 6/7 leagues no issue at all.. you could triple  that and it wont break much of a sweat...

It has a high end cpu and a decent dedicated graphics card... you can never predict the future but going on current progress with FM you'll be good for a long while with it..

I'm pretty sure I say this 12 times a day on here but budget and your needs are what anyone will need to judge what laptop is good for you.

I.e no point suggesting a great laptop for fm if you plan on using it for high end gaming etc.

Thanks @Welshace :)

It won't be used for high end gaming as I tend to do most of my gaming on my Playstation 4 and I only game I play on the PC is Football Manager.

I have a maximum budget of £1,000, so if you have any recommendations for this budget that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Then might I ask if you need or want to spend that much? If its only really for FM and then everyday tasks.. you'd easily half that budget almost for your needs... it's just to get an idea on if you want to get the best of the best or just something suitable?

I've been looking like crazy - and I cannot find any system with a high end processor that doesn't come with a dedicated graphics card.

That is - I'm finding it hard to find a laptop that comes with an i7-xxxxK processor without a graphics card - or even a lower end one like a 1050TI 4gb.

It's like once you hit a certain processing standard then a graphics card is compulsorary, or at least the higher up you go in the processor end, the higher up the supplied graphics card is, which adds £££ to the purchase.

Yeah, generally speaking to do that you will need to find a laptop configurator type site or shop so you can do it yourself.. somewhere like pcspecialist will do it, but you mostly need to speak to them directly...

Inspired by this thread yesterday actually, I've been talking to a chap at pcspecialist about all my options with the 8750H, and you can get down to a near perfect £600-£700 laptop with the graphics card and a few other unneccesarily bits and pieces taken out...

This below comes up at around £800, and that's at face value retail, without speaking to them directly to mess about with it more.

Chassis & Display
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™ i7 Six Core Processor 8750H (2.2GHz, 4.1GHz Turbo)
Memory (RAM)
8GB Corsair 2133MHz SODIMM DDR4 (1 x 8GB)
Graphics Card
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 Ti - 4.0GB GDDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1
1st Hard Disk
1TB SEAGATE 7mm SERIAL ATA III 2.5" HARD DRIVE WITH 128MB CACHE (5,400rpm)
1st M.2 SSD Drive
120GB KINGSTON SSDNow M.2 2280 G2, SATA 6Gb/s (550MB/R, 200MB/W)

I'm not getting the whole H-series of processors - the single core performance of the 8750H is only 10% faster than the 7700HQ - but the 8750H is about 50% faster overall - I'm not sure that 10% in the single core will be felt for FM drastically - for the price.

And I wouldn't be too sure the extra cores make a difference for FM.

I definitely wouldn't go backwards - but maybe the i7-8700 would be better? As it's the same price (I think) and the base speed starts at 3.2ghz.

8750H vs 7700HQ is a non starter for me..  the higher memory bandwidth and multicore performance of the 8750H easily justifies the price.. real world tests show a big improvement over the 7th gen cpu's .

i7 8700.. though I can see what you are getting at.. putting a desktop cpu in a laptop is also a non starter for me, especially with the coffee lakes.. the TDP tests when using all cores have been awful and they run well above maximum  with heavy loads.. I don't like it in desktops with half assed cooling solutions nevermind laptops with desktop cpu's.

Yeh it's a pretty nice mobile processor - if that's the case then would you not prefer the slightly higher base speed with the 8850H?

I know there's very little in it - but still. Just shooting the breeze here :)

Yeah definitely, there's no contest.. just a matter of availability really... I haven't seen many pre built systems below £1000 with the 8850H

I was supposed to buy a new laptop last year but ended up not (other half had other ideas on how to spend the money).

Anyway, I currently have an Asus G750 with an i7 4700mq and nVidia 765 (?) graphics.

It runs FM fine but I'd like it to be faster and handle more leagues/players too.

I'm currently looking at a full desktop replacement with an i7 8700K (Clevo P775TM) with a 1070 graphics card or another Asus or MSI with a 7820HK and 1070 GPU.

For FM18 am I going to notice a massive difference between these 2? Price wise they are similar, but the 8700K will generate more heat even with the delidded CPU and liquid metal etc, which will also be applied to the GPU.

Whats your thoughts?

TIA!

Difference would be mind blowing.

It's potentially for business reasons so there's a strict budget on it.. which doesn't include a lot of the items pcspecialist provides, while they are happy to mess around with certain things beyond the online configurator,  a lot of the items are in set price groups for certain systems they provide..

I'm not convinced the clevo will keep it below 99c for a sustained amount of time tbh, which would mean throttling back and overheating...

That said, if the price is similar, definitely go for the 8700k.. otherwise, stick to the 7820hk and save some cash...

The 8700k will be de-lidded and re-pasted with liquid metal and the GPU will also be re-pasted with liquid metal and modded heatsink. Having looked into the temps etc. the below is whats been quoted.

P775TM1
HID Delided 8700K @ 4.8, GTX 1070 8G, 16GB 2666, LM on CPU+ TIM on GPU+FP Pads GPU Idle Temp after 15 min warm up (C) - 36c
GPU Max Temp during AIDA64 stress test (C) - 73c
CPU Idle Temp after 15 min warm up (C) 41c
CPU Max Temp during AIDA64 stress test (C) 92c

Not sure what that means in FM18 terms?

EDIT: @Welshace is FM18 going to have CPU running at 99c? Does that mean close to 100% usage as well to achieve those temps? Sorry new to the temperature world, normally just load up and play. Hence a I best with laptop CPU for FM in terms of thermal throttling etc.

Thanks again.

No first hand experience with that model myself, so couldn't tell you for sure and while a much better paste and delidding can have dramatic effect, i'd be surprised if you were kept to 91c... that said, if that's what someones quoted you, i'd believe them, i'm sure they have better hands on experience than me and they will know their stuff..

We're talking fine margins here to be fair... if they are similar price, there is no contest, as Smurf has said... go for the 8700k, as long as it's done correctly.

Buidling a new PC since my old laptop died -

Would a i5-8400 with 8gb ram (upgrade to 16 down the line) run the major 5 leagues at a fast pace? Looking to use onboard graphics because i mostly play in 2d anyway and will pick up a gpu in a few months. Is there anything beside the 8400 to consider? And do SSD's provide a meaningful boost? No first hand experience with that model myself, so couldn't tell you for sure and while a much better paste and delidding can have dramatic effect, i'd be surprised if you were kept to 91c... that said, if that's what someones quoted you, i'd believe them, i'm sure they have better hands on experience than me and they will know their stuff..

We're talking fine margins here to be fair... if they are similar price, there is no contest, as Smurf has said... go for the 8700k, as long as it's done correctly.

Thanks mate - Is FM so intensive though that it would stress the CPU to stress test levels? Again sorry if this isn't your area.

FM is a great stress test as it all depends on what you load up .. but yes, Fm will take a cpu right up there quite easily in a laptop without a good cooling solution.

Purely down to marketing for me these days. Perhaps before the decent on board graphics of the modern Intels, manufactures could probably get away telling customers they need a big dedicated card. Back when I had my Rock gaming lappy, every option available came with a higher end card that there were no options to change. As I said, looking at it a technical level back then, it was just marketing. My take on it anyway.

The xps range is superb, bit full of bloatware, but you can solve that easily...

That spec is great, although I would consider the new gen processors too as they are looking very good in real world tests..

Depends on budget, as always though.

P.s .. please stay away from macs...  they excel at very little and are ridiculously expensive.

For that budget, you can pretty much get whatever you could possibly want or need...

but 'ideal' is a matter of knowing what you need the laptop for?

Hi

Looking to get back playing FM after a 4/5 year break. I gather from this thread that a gaming laptop is generally needed these days.

I've narrowed it down to two. Can someone who know's what they're talking about tell me which is better out of these please?

Dell

HP

Thanks

When you look at the HP.. change it to the i7 cpu option... it's 50quid cheaper and considerably better than either of those two..

That said, you can get the same spec laptop for a lot less elsewhere if you can shop elsewhere... many have been posted several times on here..

I'm back again, will the 1060 GPU be good for FM in the next few years or am I best going with the 1070?

There is about £200 of a difference between the 2 and I don't know if its overkill for FM and the odd Total War gaming session.

1060 is fine & the extra cost of a 1070 or higher is not worth it unless you’re playing other games at greater than 60fps or 1080p & want to max the graphics settings.

Thanks @Barside, I can manage how the graphics are on FM18 and thats with a 5 year old 765M GPU, imagine the 1060 will be a massive jump over that alone.

Looking for a new laptop to play FM with 20+ leagues loaded, and a large database. Will also be used for studying and the occasional bit of spreadsheet work.

Looking to spend around £700, £800 at a push. Can anybody recommend?

Also, I’d prefer a larger screen, but does this come at a cost, whether it be in the form of £ or spec?

Larger screen https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-1799E5-1225-MSI-GL72M-7REX-1225UK_2206597.html

Mind the battery power though - only last about 3 hours off charge and 2.5 hours to charge fully.
