New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

is there any more recommendations as good as the msi? or is that the best one?

I wasn’t bothered about a name I just searched for what I saw as the best value for money my laptop is literally for fm and Fm only so didn’t need an optical drive. A 700 quid msi will be better than a mac or Hp around same price mark.

I would recommend this to anyone

https://ao.com/product/9s71799e5844bun-msi-laptop-black-54318-251.aspx

not only for the laptop which runs exactly how you would want it to run for FM its a i7 HQ (HQ bit important)  larger screen and buying froma trusted seller Like ao, save on laptops a fair few bad reviews for them. I got it on finance with this bonus code so came to just over 700 I pay about 24 a month for it. cant recommend it highly enough it also came next day delivery as well.

Code BDWINDOWS10 will give 10% off thanks to private pyle for the bonus code knocked £80 off the price

Just ordered this. Seems like a cracking laptop, perfect for what I need. Thanks for the heads up :-)

How you finding it?

With my new job, I am always on the road (more so than I am at home, easily 200 days away a year) so naturally, I would like to play some FM while I'm on the road. Unfortunately, due to expenses back home, I can't afford an expensive one. Is it possible for a 200-300$ laptop to run an FM game? If so, is there any recommendation?

Consider looking at a desktop with an i3-8350K cpu paired to a GTX1050 gpu.

I should have added that I have a budget of around 1300,- for everything except a monitor, so I think I can get better than that.

I'm sure I've asked this but will ask again, I have a new gaming laptop but FM18 seems to run so slow on it, 17 was great for processing speed.

I have uninstalled 18 but I want to give it another go, my specs are:

i7 7700HQ 2.8ghz. 1050ti. 8gb ram.

This should surely be enough? Has there been any updates that address the speed of 18 yet?

@bigmattb28 There's a thread here on game lag

You specs look fine.

Not sure how it affects you - however, it seems to be a known bug.

Generally there's update around February when the transfer window closes - hopefully then it will be fixed.

However, if you need specific help then you should visit the technical  help forum - https://community.sigames.com/forum/263-football-manager-technical-help-and-bugs-forum/

I’d lose the dvd drive & swap it for a better cpu cooler but otherwise a solid recommendation.

Which one is the better?

AMD a12-9720

Intel Core i5-8250U

Intel Core i7-7500U

The i5-8250U base clockspeed is very low? Is that very bad for FM?

From what I had cracking. Once season is in motion seem to be flying through games. Think it helps I’m winning for a change 😂.  Bigger screen makes a really good bonus to it as well. Did take a while to set up with first windows update but this can be very normal and wasn’t down to performance of laptop

Can anyone recommend a monitor below £200 with a DVI cable? My currant old monitor is VGA so doesn't plug in to my graphics card.

Somewhere like amazon or pc world would be good

I got an DVI adapter but when i connect my VGA cable to it & plug it in the graphics card, i get told no cable connected.

None of them would be suitable for FM.

Why not just post links to the laptops you're looking at - and price range.

Hi everyone, I am aware of the discussion about Intel's HQ processors being much better suited for FM than U processors. I get the point.

However I am looking at a HP Probook as I had one before and was very satisfied. It uses an i5 8250U and as a GPU a GeForce 930MX. Will that be ok to run a moderate number of leagues (maybe around 10) and moderate 3d setting in the match engine?

https://www.notebooksbilliger.de/notebooks/hp+compaq+notebooks/probooks/hp+probook+470+g5+2ub58ea

Alternative would be something like this

https://www.notebooksbilliger.de/msi+gl72m+7rdx+894/eqsqid/c0ba5aaf-0fad-4c2c-9a21-76a114bf38ab

The MSI is better for FM, but I just wonder if the HP with the 8250U will really be significantly slower as the Probook is generally very good.

Much appreciated!

If lightweight portability is a key factor & you stick to running game worlds of the size you mention then the HP will likely tick the right boxes for what you want.

Budget is max 700 euros, in Holland there is no HQ processor laptop for that price. Any advice for other suitable cpu's? The best intel not HQ processor for example?

The intel i5-8250 processor was very good according to cpu benchmark and I read that it was even better than the i5-7300hq.

Maybe I found an even better option with the Acer Aspire 7. Not a gaming notebook but pretty powerful in that respect with the i5 7300HQ and Geforce GTX 1050(Ti). Some models on sale need Windows or an upgrade to an SSD hard disc but all in all it seems like a good combination of powerful enough for FM while not being a pure gaming notebook. Costs around 700-950 EUR, depending on equipment.

Any experiences with this model?

I’ve got a reasonable budget now for a new laptop. After reading through a good few pages I get what specs I need for FM but being a bit of a tech dunce I’m wondering does the term “gaming laptop” mean it won’t be suitable for other things?

I use a lot of work related applications like excel and word plus the usual web browsing on YouTube etc.

Further to the above this looks good for everything I need including the SSD part, which I read a few pages back is ideal for FM?

That is something I actually wonder, too. While I saw many good hardware tests on Acer Notebooks, I saw the Acer Aspire 13 that my wife uses and it doesn’t look like a stable piece of work. The system runs fine but the screen, touchpad and wifi connection show problems. I tend to think of bad luck with this particular device and wouldn’t advise generally against this brand. I actually tend to buying one myself (see above). But further experiences would be of great interest to sort out this kind of mixed feeling towards Acer.

I would suggest then waiting a bit longer, put the 700 aside and save a bit more.

You can ultimately do what you want to do - the choice is yours. But you have been fairly advised.

They're all on par, in terms of performance for FM the AMD or the i7 would be my choice.

However, it's a collosal waste of money, where if you threw another 100 quid at it you'd get a much much much better computer for FM.

According to cpu benchmark, the 8250u is much better than the amd a12 and the i7-7500u. The 8250u is even better than the i5-7300hq.

When you look to that you would say that it would be the best alternative for the i5-7300h but my computer knowledge isn't very good.

For FM I'd go with the i7 7500 U

You can see a list of precessors in ranked order here

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html

There's not much of a gap between the i5-8250U and the i7-7500U

However, the i7 has a much better base frequency.

The i5 is a 1.6ghz processor and FM requires 2.2ghz.

However, you're free to make your own mind up.

The i5 is much better than the i7 according to cpu benchmark despite the clockspeed of the i5 is lower than the i7. How is that possible? Because the i5 is quadcore?

According to these site the i5-8250u is much faster.

So, is the clockspeed really important as it looks to me that it is not very indispensable for good performance?

The FM17 benchmark thread does not backup that claim.

Someone did run the tests on an i5-7200U & although as expected it was well down on HQ & K variants it still posted a sub 10 minutes time to process a week on a save with all leagues active.

The i7-7500U will be fine so long as it’s not expected to run large game gameworlds or multiple competitons in full details.

Whether the i5 will be a good option all depends on how the cpu & FM18 code utilise the turbo boost feature, maybe @EdL can chip in on that.

@Barside10 minutes on 1 week in the game =  520 minutes for a 52week game - or 1 year in game play.

That would be 8.6 hours additional to process 1 year of in game play - compared to a HQ variant - is that what you're saying?

That's pretty significant.

And what's the stats after 5 seasons/10 seasons/20 seasons?

From my own experience there's significant slow down in progressing in game after about 20 seasons - and that's on a HQ processor too, so I only imagine that it's worse on a U processor.

And then with each new release of FM I can only imagine that they will be more demanding - so how will a U processor stand up against FM in 2023?

I know that if you at least get a mid class processor you increase your longevity - over getting an entry level processor.

That's what I'm trying to get the person to avoid. But as always stated, it's completely up to them.

I stand to be corrected but iirc much of the slowdown as a game progresses through the seasons is due to memory bottlenecks as the actual processing tasks remain constant from one season to the next while the data that need to be held in memory is always increasing & it’s the periods between processing finishing & the UI being available to interact with while data is stored & cached that creates the slowdown effect.

Yeh I noticed a severe slowdown in FM13 when scouting players, the scout reports being held created a huge bottleneck from me. When I removed all scout reports from all players the game sped back up again.

If you play FM in such a way that you only play 1-5 seasons and start over again or even 1-10 (I wouldn't sure on exact seasons for slowdown and it's different for everyone!)

But if you do only play a few short seasons with only 3 or 4 leauges loaded with a small database - then the U processors with an initial base speed of 2.2ghz would be enough.

But who knows what further installments of FM will bring, or if a player decides to go beyond playing 1-5 seaons and attempts a 100 year save etc.

These are the things I try to bring to the attention of people when purchasing.

It's not that U processors are poxy or anything - they just aren't suited to FM in terms of longevity.

Hi,

I am looking for a new laptop solely for FM18 so don't want to be spending loads on it but obviously want to actually be able to play the game with ease.

I have read through a number of pages so I apologise that both of the above have 'U' processors, the top one at £700 is at the very top end of my budget and im struggling to find any processors other than U within the £600-£700 limit. I did also read somewhere that U processors above 8000 are ok for FM18?

My knowledge of the spec's is limited but having done some research the 2nd link appears to be good value with an I5 processor, 8GB RAM and SSD so I am not sure its worth spending an additional £200 for the laptop in the first link?

I have only really looked on PC World atm as that's where I have always bought my laptops from so there is a degree of trust with the store.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated - thanks!

Any help on this as I'm looking at the same two
