New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

In the end I went for this absolutely beastly set-up with a custom made laptop. Hopefully it will last a long time at just over £2k. My last laptop lasted 4 and a half years and still works fine (donating it to a family member), so I look after them pretty well. My old i7-3630QM 2,4GHz ran 10 leagues reasonably well with 8GB ram so can't wait to see how this runs.

Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-7700k (4.2GHz) 8MB Cache
Memory (RAM) 32GB Corsair VENGEANCE 2400MHz SODIMM DDR4 (2 x 16GB)
Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 - 8.0GB GDDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1, G-SYNC
1st Hard Disk NOT REQUIRED
M.2 SSD Drive 1TB SAMSUNG PM961 M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 3000MB/R, 1700MB/W)

Been looking at something similar on PC Specialist mate, how has it performed with FM18 so far?

Yeh but it's a slightly older processor - the one I linked to has a 3rd generation processor (we're on gen 8 now) the one you linked to was a gen 2.

Ah I see, cheers, this is why I thought I'd be better asking 👍

I don’t use my laptop for anything other than for FM

cant really justify spending a fortune on one. Can anyone recommend any refurbished laptops that would run fm18?

Hi,   CPU and Graphics wise.  What do I need to be looking at to get FM to run well on a laptop ?

CPU - 2.2ghz or faster - stay away from U processors

Graphics - a decent enough one - not an entry level

You can check both of these out by going to https://www.notebookcheck.net/

Hi can anyone let me know if this one will run FM well. Also predict how many nations I can run 3 or 4 star quality on large database?

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-179586-1007-MSI-GL72-7QF-1007UK_2067944.html

It will run like a dream. How many nations you can run?

All computers, no matter what, can run every single league, division and a large database - regardless - how fast it runs is dependent on how happy you are with the speed of it, some people think 2 seconds is quick some people think that would be slow.

It's all relative to what you like and finding a balance.

But that laptop is superb.

Can you get better, of course you can. But that's a great price, for a good laptop.

If you post your actual budget there might be a chance we can find something even better.

Hey,

Could someone please help me build a low-budget PC, that will run FM18? Laptop could be an option too, although I doubt it will be any cheaper.

My budget is currently very tight, so I need a build with a low price. I'm not very computer-savvy myself, so I'd really appreciate if someone could help me put together the cheapest build they think will be enough for FM18 and then I can go from there. It's the only game I play, so I don't need anything too crazy at all.

Here's my current PC:

EsE8PB1.jpg

I know, it's bad and it's probably a miracle that I could still rack up hundreds of hours of FM17 and all the previous editions on it, but until this year it worked just fine if I disabled the 3D engine and used 2D Classic. I don't mind the game being a little slow during transfer windows, however, the new graphics engine will be too much for it.

Thanks!

Which one of these is the cheapest option to run FM18? From time to time I play FM on a really old PC (Gigabyte mainboard with 945 chipset, C2D E6300, 4GB RAM, Windows 10) but it's graphics card (Geforce 7600GS 256MB ) can't handle FM18 beta at all - menu lag makes the game unplayable.  I never cared for 3D, processing speed etc. on that particular machine - 2D FM17 was working fine.

I don't really know, to be honest. I've no idea how much computers cost these days. The cheaper it is, the better, as long as it's not going to have trouble running FM.

I was hoping that someone could help me create a "budget build" and then I can see if I can spend some more on any of the parts.

Not very technical when it comes to laptops so if someone could help I would be very grateful...

Needed a new laptop for a while and my current one not being able to play FM18 has made my mind up. Have seen lots of options on here on what to buy. My question is regarding graphics cards... I can see the minimum specs say graphics card needs to be Intel GMA X4500 or NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT or AMD/ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650. But the majority of laptops I’ve been looking at (on PC World) don’t even have a dedicated graphics card. They just say things like “HD graphics”. Do I need to buy a laptop with a dedicated graphics card for FM18 to work?

It doesn't need a dedicated graphics card - most computers these days have a GPU integrated with the CPU - which mostly is good for FM on a low level detail for 3D matches.

IF you don't play 3D matches then a graphics card is not important for you.

That being said - I wouldn't buy from PC World.

What's your budget?

To be honest he last couple of FMs I’ve played on 2D, partly through choice but mainly as that’s all my computer would run. Budget isn’t huge as I’ll only use it for a bit of work and FM, probably up to around £500

There's not a lot of storage which means eventually getting an external drive/usb stick for more storage - or changing the hard drive - which wouldn't be too expensive.

However, it's a good computer and would be great for FM.

I can't really find anything better for 500 - it just won't cut it.

Around $800 AUD. What laptop would you suggest, if you have any in mind?

Or what do you make of this?

I just have to say, given that I've been looking for å new laptop for a while and that I've asked a few questions in here. FM18 seems to run so much smoother than FM17. I had to change 3D graphics down from low to very low, but my old Macbook Air runs it much better than the old version. Rearly noice from the fan and simulates quite fast. The match engine is running fluid with no lags, but as I  said, I had to turn it down to the settings down to the lowest. It managed low as well, but the laptop got hot and noisy after the first match so I decided to turn it down. Hope its not only the beta and it will remain like this after the full release, but I would recommend everyone to test fm18 before buying a new machine if you're in doubt. I will probably buy a new one soon, but it was not that urgent that I first thought.

It should be ok - not the best processor - along the lines of a very good 3rd generation i5 (we're on generation 8 now).

A better processor is required if not playing 3D.

However, it's very difficult to get a laptop with a top end processor that does not have a graphics card - most do. Unless you build your own that is.

I was told that R3 1200 is probably the best price/performance CPU I can get for that sort of money. Would you recommend something else?

I'm really not trying to go overboard though, I don't really play anything but FM.

if you don't play anything but fm then a gtx 1050ti video card is an overkill. a gt 1030 should be enough (or even something used! i use an old video card that costs 15 euros and i can play 3d matches on medium). and you can buy a stronger cpu from that money.

personally i'd recommend a b350 motherboard (asus prime b350 plus or the asrock ab350m pro is the cheaper option)

if you don't want to overclock the CPU then you should buy a ryzen cpu that ends with an X.  like ryzen 3 1300x or ryzen 5 1500x. the x version of the cpu is faster.

Not really buying a new computer, just interested if FM18 would run decently on this.

Intel i3-2120
4GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia GT 630 (I don't care about fancy 3D match engine graphics)
Hard disk drive (not an SSD)

I'd be playing 5 leagues with 2 levels each. Is there a topic or dedicated websites where people post useful benchmarks for FM (18)?

Looking for a new cheap laptop... Less than £500. But I have no idea of how the 3D engine will work.

I've found this one, can anybody please tell if it would be ok for FM18.

Intel Core i5 (7. Gen) 7200U / 2.5 GHz - Dual-Core
6GB DDR4 SDRAM - 2133 MHz
NVIDIA GeForce 940MX - 2 GB GDDR5 SDRAM
256 GB SSD - (M.2 2280)

It's not a great processor - but it should be ok.

If you can get more ram then try get 8gb.

However, the processor isn't the best for FM.

The Ryzen 3 1200 slots in just above the i3 7300 series and just below the i5's, it is a very capable CPU for FM and for a budget build it's highly recommended.

I would like to thank @Smurffor the time and effort he puts into helping us in this thread. It's so hard to make an informed decision for many of us, and without his help I'm sure many of us would waste our money on something that isn't fit for purpose.

I don't know if you have arranged some sort of commission for yourself at SaveOnLaptops, but I would certainly hope so. There is a regular amount of business being done in there at your prompting. Thanks again for the good advice..

Sorry for making you go over old info but also thanks for any advice.

I'm looking at £600-800 hoping to get 3-4 years out of the machine and play mainly FM but also total war and a few other bits I watched go by in my last few years as a chromebook user. It will also be used as a light work machine every now and then.

Hi Wap92,

There are a couple of very minor issues with this build, but the CPU should be fine.

The only significant change here would be to replace the motherboard with any B350 motherboard, it will likely be $20 more, however the B350 board will give you the ability to overclock the Ryzen 3 1200 from 3.1Ghz to at least 3.8Ghz with only a few clicks of a button - that's an additional 15-20% performance uplift with almost no additional effort.

The A320 board prohibits any form of overclocking which will limit performance.

If you are concerned about making changes in the BIOS to overclock a processor, it takes 30 seconds with this CPU and there are many guides and videos on what you need to to.

Thanks

Harabek

I don't get any commission from anyone - I only use save on laptops because their filters are the easiest to find a computer for FM.

I've tried and tried many different sites - but the filters just aren't dynamic enough to find a suitable laptop.

I also use PC Specialist from time to time - along with Amazon (not bad but they throw in refurbed machines along with new ones), Very, John Lewis, LaptopOutlet.co.uk, Argos and littlewoods.

There's plenty of sites out there selling laptops.

It's just that Save on Laptops and PC specialist have the best filters in terms of finding a computer for FM.

I teamed up with another forum member to write a blog post on finding a laptop

You'd have to go refurbished and an older laptop for £400.

I think you'll need to spend about £600 for a decent laptop for FM.

Let me know and I'll have a look either way.

All the above are similar specs - the only difference worth noting is that 1) 5-6 hours without being charged in. 2)4-5 hours. 3) 3-4 hours

Only when not plugged in - if plugged in their all the same.

Most people come on here because they don't understand what's good in terms of a laptop for FM - and want to spend their money wisely. A lot of people here wouldn't know how to change out a mother board. Never mind overclocking - it's all things they come here not to do.

Most people just want a laptop out of the box that runs FM well - and there's plenty of Laptops out there within people's budgets to make this happen.

That website is very slow and clunky.

I couldn't find anything better on there - convertible laptops haven't reached the stage of having top processors in them, they usually use the "U" processor, which are dlibereatly underclocked to preserve battery power.

It will run FM. How well - it's hard to know.

No graphics card - so 3D matches could be an issue.

Most people come on here because they don't understand what's good in terms of a laptop for FM - and want to spend their money wisely. A lot of people here wouldn't know how to change out a mother board. Never mind overclocking - it's all things they come

Most people just want a laptop out of the box that runs FM well - and there's plenty of Laptops out there within people's budgets to make this happen.

Smurf,

I would absolutely agree with you in almost all cases, except the one I commented on.

That user is clearly building this themselves or having somebody with experience put that build together for them.

Ultimately that person would want the best performance per dollar

A quick and dirty overclock on a B350 would be the way to achieve that

It's neither a prebuild nor a laptop so the user clearly has an idea of what he/she wants.

I would like to add...after reading through some of this thread, you do a fantastic job helping us FM fans mak great choices for systems.

You must spend more time here than in game!

Thanks

Harabek

Looking for a new laptop that can run FM18 quite well. My budget is around 1000£. Battery-time, weight and that sort of thing is not important, I just want the best performing laptop in terms of running FM in that price-range. I have been looking at the Acer Predator Helios G3: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/predator-model/NH.Q28AA.001  and Asus FX502VMA (Both have similar specs). Any other suggestions?

If you are buying from the US check to make sure you are not subject to customs fee's before delivery. this can add a couple of hundred onto a price
