This is good - but a small hard drive - so I'd recommend expanding it at a later date, or getting an external drive.

Same laptop - more storage

I've looked at lots of sites, including Amazon, Very, etc. and can't find anything better.

So this is just about planning. Which I've done before with no progress, but figure it can't hurt to ask....

Built a gaming PC back in 2011 and its held up surprisingly well. Intel i5-2500K, AMD Radeon 6950 video card (4GB), 8 GB Ram, and a nice big case (HAF X). The mobo went a couple of years ago and I had to replace it, so also upgraded to an SSD for the OS. Power supply went last year and had to replace that. I've been mulling an overall upgrade, but a new processor, mobo, video card, and RAM is going to get pricey.

Part of my hesitation is how much of a difference it will really make. I mostly play FM on this rig. I run 25-30 leagues and it starts to slow down after a couple of seasons. But the graphics aren't really a big deal in FM anyway. Play some other games like Farming Simulator (don't judge me), No Man's Sky, and a few others, but not a ton of FPS shooters (those tend to be console games for me).

I've seen some recommendations for the new AMD Ryzen processors. Anyone have any experience with them? Back when I built this rig, AMD seemed to be a full step behind Intel, but I'm not so sure that's the case now. Would a newer processor like the AMD Ryzen 1500 or 1600, mobo, and maybe 16 GBs of RAM make all that much processing difference in games like FM?

Upgrading the video card is a pretty big investment. Something like a GTX 1060 or 1070 is going to be $300 plus. But sticking with the same video card I currently have will bottle-neck overall performance. That won't matter too much on games like FM, but would moreso on games like No Man's Sky. Still, its a way to do the upgrade in stages and not have to shell out as much at once.

Basically, would I see much of a performance boost from a process/mobo/RAM upgrade, and would the bottle neck but too ugly to use the same video card for a time?

Wondered what sort of computer would be required to run about a dozen or so of the major leagues in FM17. I have a 6 year old iMac which is in need of replacement. Im opting for a pc to play FM. What sort of barebones kit (Memory, processor) would be required to run those leagues quickly?

Thanks

Quite a loaded question to be honest.

I think you'd benefit from going through PC Specialist and looking at what they have to offer. Great builds of computer for a great price. Plus their tech support on the forum is brilliant.

I wouldn't imagine the queries you posted here suit me to answer - as I don't play any other games at all, other than FM12.

I'd highly recommend PC Specialist and their forums to address your queries, especially in other games.

Minimum specs for FM are:

2.2ghz processor
2gb RAM
Graphics card for 3D matches.

Basic you should look for in PC

Best processor you can afford that goes faster than 2.2ghz
8gb RAM
Best graphics card you can afford (if you don't want 3D matches then you can forgo this - however, if you play other games then this is needed).

Let me know budget and I can take a look for you.

yeah, not a simple one. Thanks for the response. I've been mulling asking on a PC specific forum for a bit but held off - I can't really afford the upgrade at the moment, so I don't want to get too far into planning. But I am just curious. Thanks again!

Hello to all FM fans!

I would like to ask you if what you think about this configuration. It´s would be mainly for playing FM.

Intel core i7-7700 (3,6GHz - 4,2GHz, HT), 16GB DDR4 CRUCIAL 2400MHz,  Intel HD Graphics, 240GB SSD Kingston Now UV400, 350W source SEASONIC SSP-350ST 80Plus Bronze. (https://www.czc.cz/czc-pc-office-i7-ssd-w10-pro/207656/produkt)

I watch matches only in 2D so I don´t need good graphic card. I do believe that this PC would be great for FM, but my only issue is the source. This PC is meant for office work so I´m worried about the noise during intense FM playing.

Thank you very much in advance for any possible reply :)

Hi guys,

Sorry I'm coming in on this quite late. Been an FM fan for years and need a new laptop. I dont tend to go for 3d match engine but like a good size database of players. I've been reading what has been posted and have found the laptop below.

https://www.tesco.com/direct/hp-14-bw021na-14-amd-a6-quadcore-8gb-ram-1tb-hdd-laptop-with-dvdrw-white/615-2571.prd?skuId=615-2571

Would be grateful of your thoughts or alternatives. My budget is about £450, £500 tops. It seems to give the 8Gb and good storage. Just not sure on the processor.

Thanks.

Did you have 14 inch in mind?

This is the only one I can find that would hand 3D graphics well - but processor suffers - that leads to smaller amount of leagues loaded and smaller database unfortunately for longer career saves (over 10 years)

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/X556UB-DM262T-ASUS-X556UB-DM262T_1966546.html

If you want to play with 3D graphics on the lowest setting

I'd be torn on these 3 - favouring the middle one.

Hi, so im brand new to this sub and was wondering if my laptop would slow down if i download Football Manager 2017 on to it. I also wanted to know if my laptop would be able to download facepacks onto it without slowing the game down. Thanks.

  • Laptop Specs: Asus Laptop
  • Intel Core I5- 7200U CPU @2.50GHz 2.71GHz
  • Says it has 12GB installed Ram but only 11.9GB usable.
  • 64bit Operating System
  • I only watch my matches in 2d and would like to load up 4 leagues.

Again - my personal opinion - please research screen size, weight of laptop etc. until you're satisfied - please research all elements as posted as it is just my opinion.

Remember to always ask the question before you buy! And Always post your laptop you're going to buy in this thread - as there are some excellent people who can point you in the right direction!

Laptops of the Week

£0-£450 -Not good for 3D graphics - recommend playing on lowest setting if you must

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/X541UA-XX202T-ASUS-X541UA-XX202T_2059132.html

This is  better - still 3D graphics would struggle

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/1BV19EAABU-HP-15-ba044na_2066581.html

£450-£650 - Both really good for 3D graphics

This is great - however, it has a small harddrive and you'd either need to swap it out - or get an external drive/flash drive

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16J562-1673-MSI-GL62-7QF-1673UK_2066567.html

This is also very good (slightly older processor and a tiny bit slower)

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/NX.G66EK.004-Acer-Aspire-V15-in-Black_2095447.html

£650-£800

This is the sister to the one above that's only  better by virtue that  it has more storage space

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16J562-1673-MSI-GL62-7QF-1673UK_2080715.html

This is a great one for 800

£800-£1,200

Specs for FM graphics card

Graphics Cards: Cards equal to or better than the following:

  • Intel GMA X4500
  • NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
  • AMD/ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650

Anything above this should be in theory good enough. However, the GMA X4500 is an integrated into chipsets - and if one was to look at processors with this they may end up with a processor with less than 2.2ghz speed (which is recommended).

As long as you stay above the 9600m GT or the Radeon HD 3650 range then you should be good.

All 19 posted above are better than those. So they should in theory be good.

Hi, Smurf.

For your info, i've purchased the HP Omen 15 inch.

More or less, the specs are as follow:

  • Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ Processor (2.8 GHz base frequency, up to 3.8 GHz with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology, 6 MB cache, 4 cores)
  • Windows 10 Home 64
  • 15.6" diagonal FHD 120 Hz IPS anti-glare WLED-backlit (1920 x 1080)
  • 16 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (2 x 8 GB); 1 TB 7200 rpm SATA
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 (6 GB GDDR5 dedicated)

The laptop is running smooth and great as i have 5 stars rating to run FM2017.

However, when i connect it to my 27 inch Philips external monitor via HDMI, i'm experiencing some glitches and stuttering.

Below are the specs for my external monitor:

LCD panel type:  AH-IPS LCD
Backlight type:  W-LED system
Panel Size:  27 inch / 68.6 cm
Effective viewing area:  597.89 (H) x 336.31 (V)
Aspect ratio:  16:9
Optimum resolution:  1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz
SmartResponse (typical):  5 ms (Grey to Grey)
Brightness:  250  cd/m²
Contrast ratio (typical):  1000:1
SmartContrast:  20,000,000:1
Pixel pitch:  0.311 x 0.311 mm
Viewing angle:  178º (H) / 178º (V)  @ C/R > 10
Picture enhancement:  SmartImage Lite
Display colors:  16.7 M
Scanning Frequency:  30 -83 kHz (H) / 56 -75 Hz (V)
MHL:  1080p@30Hz
sRGB:  Yes
Any idea why i'm experiencing the glitches and stuttering..?
Thank you. :)

I see - most likely a graphics driver issue - head over the the technical forum - I'm sure someone can help you out there.

Usually there's an update to the Graphics Card available.

Thanks smurf   Budget will be around the £500 mark

This is ok if you play 3D matches it would be good https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Products/cat/Laptops/refine/max~500$46563~67690$46567~171251

However, the processor is a bit underpar - so you wouldn't get to load a lot of leauges and/or large databases.

This is one I posted in my weekly recommendations (as above)

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/X541UA-XX202T-ASUS-X541UA-XX202T_2059132.html

It would be quite good, if you play 3D then play on lowest settings (or until you're satisified)

Or something like this -

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/X540LA-XX194T-ASUS-X540LA-XX194T_1952554.html

Don't expect to play too many leagues/database size reduced, and 3D graphics probably won't be great even on lowest settings -

16 hours ago, RorysRocketThrow said:

May I ask a really daft question?

How well will a 1050 graphics card run the 3d engine?  High settings?

It depends which model you get

GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (Notebook)    768 @ 1493 - 1620 (Boost) MHz    128 Bit @ 7000 MHz
GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (Desktop)    768 @ 1290 - 1392 (Boost) MHz    128 Bit @ 7008 MHz
GeForce GTX 1050 (Desktop)    640 @ 1354 - 1455 (Boost) MHz    128 Bit @ 7008 MHz
GeForce GTX 1050 (Notebook)    640 @ 1354 - 1493 (Boost) MHz    128 Bit @ 7000 MHz

Obviously faster is better.

How does it play on FM - I don't know I don't have that model.

You'll just have to try it out - and you might be happy with the performance on highest settings - where others may not.

The performance will vary depending on the heat generated during play

You can always tweak it back until you're happy.

It's an ok computer - however, the hard drive is the slowest model out there it's 5400 RPM - the next one up being standard is 7200rpm and then there's a higher end one that has a speed of 10,000 RPM.

For 989 - see my recommendation above in regards for a computer around 1000

Thanks for the advice.

I currently have a desktop which is on its last legs and can run FM17 but the graphics are so bad I have to holiday through games (half a star on the graphics capability in "preferences".

What I'm after is the cheapest laptop that will run FM17 with no problems with full spec graphics; I usually start a game with five or so leagues and would like the option of a large database. Apart from FM17 (soon to be FM18 obviously) I don't play games and just use it for bog standard photos, internet, spreadsheet etc stuff. My original comment about only playing FM17 was to highlight I have no need for a gaming machine.

Do I take it I need to add on another £200 or so to my £400 budget just to get a laptop that will run FM17 on full graphics (four stars or more on graphics capability)?

Hi, the last game I bought was fm14, and haven't had a laptop since then. Really want to get back into it though, would this be ok for fm18? £899 dell inspiron from pc world

  • Gaming: Play the latest titles
  • Windows 10
  • Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ processor
  • RAM: 8 GB / Storage: 1 TB HDD & 128 GB SSD
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050M

Looks good - not much else out there to beat it.

The 1050M will slow when getting hot, it depends on the cooling in the computer - therefore, get a laptop cooler and you should be good.

For 600 this is what you can get

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16J562-1673-MSI-GL62-7QF-1673UK_2066567.html

The hard drive is relatively small though - if you're not going to need a lot of space then this good. But if you feel you need more then you can pick up a USB 3.0 flash drive cheap enough or an external drive etc.

This is quite nice too -

More storage - same price - practically identical - it's a tiny bit lower in specs, but nothing that worries me.

Quick question that maybe @Smurfor someone else can help me with.

I loved my previous laptop, but didn't buy as well the last time and it turns out the processor wasn't great, (2.00 GHz)..

It's not really good enough for FM so I need an upgrade and I'm just wondering if it's realistic to upgrade the laptop or should I pass this one onto the kids and get a new one?

Any advice would be appreciated.

For all the people asking whether or not a computer will be able to handle Football manager: Go here

There's a section "How well will my computer run Football manager 2017. Just punch in the GPU, CPU and RAM then you'll get your answers.

Hi Smurf,

I was wondering if you could tell me if this machine will be capable of running FM18?

Thnaks for any help, much appreciated!

http://www.harveynorman.ie/computing/laptops/lenovo-310-15.6-amd-a12-8gb-1tb.html

I wouldn't be able to tell you - it only states it's a AMD A12 - with no other info. It's impossible to know without the correct processor model number.

It looks like it might be the AMD 12-9700P that's the only one I can find in the 2.5ghz range.

Otherwise - the hard drive is the slowest model - 5200RPM compared to the standard of 7400RPM and the fastest being 10,000RPM.

There's no mention of a graphics card either.

I think this one is better to be honest https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/NX.G66EK.004-Acer-Aspire-V15-in-Black_2095447.html

Problem is people don't necessarily know what specs to put onto those sites.

All good if you know what you're doing and happy doing it.

I think this thread evolved from the point that people don't know anything about computers, but have a certain budget and want to play FM on a new computer.

Honestly I do try other sites like Amazon, Very, John Lewis, Harvey Norman etc.

1 it's arduous to go through the selection process, for example, on Amazon it's unclear whether it's 1st or 2nd hand or where it's coming from, if it's a clearance item - and the prices are not the same elsewhere.

2 - the selection process over various sites for the necessary parts are not always there -the selection process on SaveonLaptops and Laptopsdirect, whereas it's slow, but it's still better than any other site.

3 - a lot of sites are very unclear to the actual parts that are in the computer - for example, Harvey Norman simply said it was an ADM 12 2.5ghz - and there's a bit of research involved there to find out exactly what processor it is. Turns out it was an AMD 12 9700P - and that involved further research.

4 - I find a lot of sites selling top notch laptops but the Hard Drive inside is only a 5200RPM - and I wouldn't wish that an anyone - and certainly when I go by budget and SaveOnLaptops are selling better specs, with SSDs or other 7400, or 10000 RPM drives, with newer parts for cheaper.

Whether the same laptops can be found elsewhere - I don't know - but I find the selection process and the prices better than other sites, so I tend to use it more often.

If there's other suggestions or anyone wants to use another site - by all means do - I'm not tied to any particular website/brand.
