New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

I'm wondering would anybody be recommend the best laptop I can get for around £500-650....

I've read positive reviews for A1 refurbed machines from Laptops Direct so willing to give them a shot.  I've seen the following:

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/grade-a1-hp-250-g5-core-i7-6500u-8gb-256gb-ssd-dvd-rw-15.6-inch-windows-1-77374860-1-x0q13ea/version.asp

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-15-au151sa-15-6-laptop-black-10156899-pdt.html

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/stormforce-wildfire-core-i7-6700hq-8gb-1tb-128gb-ssd-geforce-gt940-dvd-rw-7270-9069/version.asp

However I'm open to suggestons.  My laptops are ideally used for word processing, working on emails etc for work but a big big demand for a laptop is FM so it's always the Barometer for success.  I used to be involved in IT and never needed much guidance on picking things but times have caught up on me so I'll take the advice of the newer generation of experts hahah!!

I usually run a medium database but with lots of leagues.  Of the top of my head I run England (to league 2), Scotland, Italy, France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Russia, USA, Argentina, Brazil and considering including the Chinese leagues since the big money lies in these markets nowadays.  These leagues will usually all run to the second highest division where applicable.  I often also include Norway, Denamrk, Sweeden also as non playable also but not overly fussed on them.

I know my games will be slow but ideally I'm looking for the best possible machine in that price range.

Anybody any suggestions on the best machine or comments on how the two machines will run?  My pref will be the refurbed machine from Laptops Direct unless people tell me not to trust them!

Thanks

Looking to order this weekend if anybody can advise.

I had seen the recommendation in a few of the latest pages so decided to add it to see if it was good for a larger spec game.

Will look into ordering, had never heard of the manufacturer so wanted to ensure it was good shout.  Thanks for answering.

Just been talking to one of the guys on this thread and he's really impressed with it.

Do you need it to be portable? (is long battery life a factor for you?)

Does it have to John Lewis?

What is your budget?

Thanks for your reply mate :)

It doesn't need to be portable as I will be looking a desktop replacement

Not restricted to John Lewis, although I do have some Curry's and Amazon vouchers so either of them retailers would be ideal.

Budget is around £700 but can go a bit higher if the spec is good.

The one I've recommended above will suit your budget as long as you don't mind medium graphics, if you want high graphics this will cost you more

I'll have a quick check on amazon and Curry's for you but I can personally recommend laptops direct having dealt with them

Looking for a new laptop to play FM well but bit clueless when it comes to what I need. Luckily I enjoy the old school nostalgia and still play in 2D but want something that will run fast. Was thinking of http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/acer-aspire-e5-575-15.6-inch-hd-core-i7-6500u-8gb-1tb-uma-dvd-super-multi-nx.ge6ek.004/version.asp but would welcome input from others about whether this is a good bet or there are any better options? The fact you play in 2D is a good thing for recomendations as dedicated graphics cards really eat into a budget

can you stretch to this?

Thanks for replying I would just like a powerful 15" laptop around the £1,000 mark with a powerful processor and SSD.  There are 3 i'm considering please note that the first two are from PC World and there is also a flash 10% sale on until 4/4/17

The first one i already mentioned, 2nd is

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/msi-apache-pro-ge62-15-6-gaming-laptop-black-10147506-pdt.html (Similar to the gigabyte u mentioned)

3rd

I have also been considering this one seems pretty decent but there are a few reviews saying the brightness isn't that great and there's no units where i live to judge for myself.

The Currys one is a proper gaming laptop with a good graphics card, The HP has the latest i7 and personally I prefer the way it looks.

Any of them will be superb for FM really and with a budget of 1k you have loads of options

For 1k I would be expecting

i7 6700hq/7700hq

an SSD

anything extra would be a bonus so it just comes down to you checking reviews of screen quality, aesthetics and how they deal with heat e.g. fan noise

Hi guys, would this laptop be a good deal for FM 2017 - or a tad overkill? Not certain what's the bare minimum for i5 or i7 as never owned a laptop before solely for FM purposes. Thanks!

- 150k players
- Preferably 8-10 leagues (at least till second tier)
- Online play with a couple of friends

It is the Lenovo Y700.

@benchilds30 it'll run it yes just don't expect miracles.  You'll have to tone down the amount of leagues you run to a bare minimum though.

Been looking at this, do you think it will run loads of leagues quick?

currently on a 17 inch laptop, dropping to 15 inch make much of a difference?

It will run loads.  Great specs.

I use a 17 inch laptop myself, they are bulkier so you'll find the 15 more portable.

The smaller screen may take a little getting used to but I borrow a 15 inch laptop for travelling and I find it fine.

Some other options assuming it doesn't have to be Amazon

This has the same specs but has an SSD drive for faster loading times.  It has less RAM (you can ring to get a quote for more) but that won't be an issue for FM.  It's also a 17 inch screen.

and the cheaper 15 inch version

Also looking at this, the dell screen is supposed to be poor.

I will look to upgrade to 16gb

I'm a fan of HP, my own laptop is HP.

The one you have linked to has half as much video RAM, my suggestions were based on like for like compared to the one you suggested as i'm not sure what your exact needs are.

That HP is a solid bit of kit though and will serve you well for years.

edit

this slightly more pricy one has the same graphics card as the Dell

I am getting the HP Omen, it as 8GB ram, will it make a significant difference if I get 16GB ram upgrade. Will FM run quicker with more leagues etc.

No it won't make any difference to FM, it will only help if you are running other things at the same time

Which Omen are you getting?

Hey guys,

been playing fm17 on my MacBook Pro and it's finally cooked it and died :( Fortunately Apple fixing it for free, although I'm looking into getting a desktop solely for FM purposes. I only have about 600-700 AUD to spend so what are the main things I need to be looking at to run fm smoothly? More than happy to buy second hand. Sorry if I'm posting on wrong thing, first time here!

I would look into building your own if i were you, much better value.  So many youtube videos out there, easier than you think.

or even buy the parts yourself and get somebody else to assemble them for you

Do you need a monitor and keyboard etc?

I really like checking desktop components, so i did a quick search at the Australian newegg.
I've found a setup around 650 AUD with:
-the regular: case, psu, mobo, cpu, ram, vga,
-an hdd+ssd (he could skip buying the ssd so to reduce the price),
-a monitor (he could also check for other monitors).

but without:
-keyboard/mouse (they are cheap),
-speakers (they are cheap),
-dvd drive (you don't really need one in 2017 and it's cheap),
-an OS (don't know if Windows10 is still free),
-AV (he doesn't really have to buy a complete version).

If you like, i could post each link from that setup and you could also give your advice.

I had a quick look myself but without knowing his exact requirements its quite hard, official copies of windows will take $100 out of the budget for example.

How does FM run on a desktop without a dedicated graphics card?  I imagine it will run at medium settings on skylake/kaby lake without one so that would save a considerable amount as he has said he only wants it for FM and not other games.

It's so hard to know really, without an OS and monitor and the other bits and bobs I came up with this

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/xDPVyf

only a 128gig SSD but he only wants it for FM so thats plenty, also as we all know FM relies mainly on processor and this has a latest gen i5

All for 624 AUD so wiggle room for a monitor etc.

You added a very good cpu in your list.
I made this list: https://secure.newegg.com/Shopping/ShoppingCart.aspx?submit=view

But, since you said he doesn't need a HDD, he could remove it from the list.
He could also look for a cheaper PSU (and less watts).
About the GPU, wouldn't it be ok to just buy  a GT730 2GB GDDR5? I think it's more than enough.

EDIT1: Can you see the details of this link or does it redirect you to nothing?
EDIT2: It does redirect you to nothing. Check this new list:

is a 730 any better than the integrated Kaby Lake though I wonder?  I'll have to look into it, you could be right.

I'd be cautious with PSU's they're the most important part of a build as far as i'm concerned, get a bad one and you can put the whole thing in jeopardy, I would always check reviews from people such as johnnyguru before getting one.

The link doesn't redirect to anything sorry

I had another go after reading good reviews of the new Pentiums which now have hyperthreading and leave money for windows and a monitor

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/vHdDFd - just under $700 and you can get a mouse/keyboard combo for less than 20 bucks I should think.

I also wonder what the Australian refub market is like, he could probably get a decent 3rd or 4th gen i series HP/Dell ex business system for a reasonable price.  The whole thing is literally a minefield!!

About the list i made, he could change the monitor. Same for the case if he doesn't like it. PSU is ok, 80 Plus and Corsair.

A little expensive setup for the budget, could he choose a less expensive mobo like the one in my list?
696.99 USD=929 AUD with the conversion.

It is but 200 odd of that budget is monitor and windows, as for the dedicated graphics I just don't think its worth it for the price, maybe he could pick up one from ebay or similar at a later date if the integrated doesn't suffice

Kaby chips don't always play nice with those motherboards without a bios update so I was a little limited in what I could get unless the retailer can guarantee compatibility of the H110 models

I think at this point we'll need a reply from @Jrodios7 to make sure we're not wasting our time and hopefully get some more specifics

You are right about the Kaby chips.
And if you add 129AUD for the windows 10, even my list reaches 685AUD. All this without keyboard, mouse, speakers and the technicians payment for assembling the desktop.

Yeah, it's better to wait for the guy's response .

First off, thanks heaps for all your effort, really appreciate it!

Ive only skimmed through the comments so far but will now go back and look at the PCS you guys created.

just to point out though; I wont need a monitor, I plan on playing on my 70 inch tv (my mate does and it looks legit)

- I wont need windows, Im a teacher and we get it for free

- I have a keyboard and mouse

- Ive been watching youtube videos and would love to put it together myself. If not, I have a mate that can do it for free

Thanks again lads!

Hi guys I'm looking into getting a new laptop for fm I don't know much about them and need advising because the ones I have bought befor have been poor on performance I am looking at around 600-700 quid on the laptop. The one below is the one I want but I don't know if that is good enough to run it a good level so it's not slow with lots of leagues.

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-envy-x360-15-ar052sa-15-6-2-in-1-black-10147539-pdt.html?istCompanyId=9a35962d-802d-4e67-9721-0a3328ca1f02&istItemId=xtqmxqqmpa&istBid=tztx&srcid=198&cmpid=ppc~gg~1011+(PLA)+Windows+Laptops+%26+Convertibles~1011+(PLA)+Windows+Laptops+%26+Convertibles+ad+group~Exact&mctag=gg_goog_7904&kwid=GOOGLE&device=m&ds_kids=92700017112767488&PLA=1&gclid=CjwKEAjw2qzHBRChloWxgoXDpyASJAB01Io0p9Y3CFPq5UXLIDG4OQ_FzEKKCgJ2cNYfbvWHDqJykxoCGZzw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CM7zmtSHmtMCFeGhUQodeJQNgw

Awesome.
Since you won't need a monitor (not 100% sure if the 70-inch tv will support fm, need advice here), windows10 and keyboard&mouse, you have two options:
A) Spend your entire budget. This will allow you to build an even better desktop which will be able to run more demanding games, not just FM and will be useful for the next ~10 years. FM database with approximately 300k players.
B) Spend less money and buy a desktop which will allow you to run a database of about 200k players.

So, it's up to you.

Things to consider:
1) @bennytee's suggestion of i5-7500 is a very good choice. Really, you won't need a processor upgrade for the next ~10 years.
With the Pentium G4400 or G4560, you will have to replace it in less than 5 years (disregard this advice if you don't care about an FM database with max 150k players).
2) SI has just started to make use of 64-bit systems. This means more RAM usage for FM (if it's required). 8GB is more than enough, but in the future (FM2020/FM2021/FM2022, who knows) you might need more RAM.
So, it's better to buy 1x8GB of RAM and not 2x4GB. This will allow you to buy another 1x8GB RAM in the future.
3) It's better to buy a dedicated graphics card and not stay with the integrated one. A GT730 is the cheapest which will help but there are better options, like the GTX 750Ti (https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127783).
These graphics cards are not the best but will serve you for the next ~5years.
4) About the power supply. If you choose option B and stay with the integrated graphics card, you won't need more than 400W.
If you buy the GT730 or the GTX 750Ti you will need something better, like this: https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139147, this: https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028, or this: https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139148.

I can't think of something else atm. It would be nice if other members give their advice too.

Hi guys,

I'm buying a new laptop with a max budget of around £1000, I currently use a Lenovo laptop so have been looking at their range and this has caught my eye -

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-y700-15-6-gaming-laptop-black-10146500-pdt.html

It looks a very good laptop, but just how good will this spec be for running FM17 in terms or processing speed?

Also are there any another options which are a lot better than this laptop for a similar price?

Thanks!

Comparing that laptop to my desktop (i3 3.07GHz dual-core, 4GB RAM, 1GB GDDR3, HDD):
-I am able to run a database with 200k players but it's veeeeery slow.
-150k players is still slow but not that bad.
-125k players is good.

That laptop is a looooot better than my desktop :(.
Just an estimation, you will be able to run an FM database with 200k players with no problems, really.

Also, check this:

The processor of the laptop you wanna buy is in the list, twice.

EDIT: @scott-h22 sorry for mentioning you, I thought that this laptop was the same with the one you own (saw the list on the benchmark thread).

Apart from enthusiast processors which are only in 2k+ laptops this and the 7700hq are the go to processors at £800 plus unless you need major portability.  This will munch its way through 120k players no problem

Hello guys,

my name is John and i come from the Netherlands. I am looking for a new laptop to play my favorite gam (Fm17 off course ;). Well, i see that you guys know a lot about processors and stuff, i don't haha. Well this is my situation. I like to play FM with a good database and the top competions. I really don't care about the 3d fixtures. Always played 2D. My budget is around €400-500.

I searched for laptops with a good processor and enough Ram. Can you guys help me a bit making a good choice? This is wat i found:

I really don't know which one is the best for me. If you have better options in my price-range i love tou hear about that. I really appreciate your help guys. I spend hours looking at forums and i know that most of you guys know a lot more about system requirements than i do. I really looking forward to hear from you guys.

Afternoon gents,

Wondering if anybody would be willing to help a first timer. Who knows the square root of sod all about these sort of things.
Have been out of the FM loop for a few years now and have got the itch to start playing again. So need a new laptop.

Problem is I'm trying to do it on a budget of under £400 Pushing to £500 max for the right deal.

I've seen quite a few, especially after looking through this thread. But I'm really not sure if I'd be wasting my time. It would primarily be used for Football Manager and some other light gaming. Older, less graphically intensive stuff
I'd like to run a few leagues (maybe between 5-12) with a decent database and prefer the 2d match engine. So no real need for some all singing gaming laptop.

After looking at loads the 2 I've found that seem alright to my un-informed self are:

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/refurbished-hp-pavilion-15-au181sa-15.6-intel-core-i5-7200u-2.5ghz-8gb-1tb-a1-z3d07ea/version.asp

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/refurbished-acer-e5-575-15.6-intel-core-i5-7200u-3.1ghz-8gb-1tb-windows-10-a1-nx.ge1ek.009/version.asp

They any good? or would I better off saving for something a bit better? Or could somebody be kind enough to find something better than those on my paupers budget?
Or is it all much of a muchness at my sort of price range?

Thanks in advance.

@John88 Really hard to advise you because i don't really know the Dutch market at all, I have to say the links you put up looked expensive for what they were.  I could probably find better in the UK even including the shipping.  This for example http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/refurbished-hp-pavilion-15-au181sa-15.6-intel-core-i5-7200u-2.5ghz-8gb-1tb-a1-z3d07ea/version.asp  With a rough google money conversion comes out at around €475.

I would avoid all of the laptops you linked to especially the 3rd one.

I can't help but thinking there must be better deals to be had in the Netherlands, aren't there forums you can ask on?  The key thing would be i5 or i7 and at least 8gb of RAM, anything else is a bonus

@Waggy1865  http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/refurbished-hp-pavilion-15-au193sa-15.6-intel-core-i7-7500u-2.7ghz-8gb-2tb-a1-z3d17ea/version.asp  Looks like a cracking deal.  Has the all important (in my opinion) full HD screen and would be worth the full budget.

In terms of saving up you'd be looking at 750-800 before you hit the beefier processors.

*edit* Just seen this https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/7240-9067-StormForce-7240-9067_2060056.html and I know its above your budget but the leap from the other low powered U processors to this HQ one would be well worth it and would future proof you for a long time based on your needs and also has a full HD screen

Cheers Bennytee, must admit the vast majority I really liked the look of are in the £700-800 price range. But I just can't justify it at the moment.

ThatStormforce one looks absolutely spot on though. Even if it is a little more than I was hoping to get away with. Going to order it now before I change my mind! Really appreciate the help.

@Waggy1865 No worries :thup:

If you could do the benchmarking thread when it arrives that would be much appreciated.  It all helps to give solid real world advice to others

Hey guys, Im currently looking out for a laptop. Now, I know the FM specs, but what I don't know is this:

I can either go for this Lenovo Ideapad Y700 : Intel I7-6700HQ + 8GB DDR4 + GTX 960M

or I can get this one: Lenovo Legion Y520 : Intel I5-7300HQ + 8GB DDR4 + GTX 1050.

I know that both of the GPU's are overkill for FM anyway, but the question I have is about the CPU. I haven't used intel based systems in ages. Is that skylake i7 better for FM than the Kabylake i5 ? Both of these 2 laptops cost the same (about 800 euros).
