That must be the the best price for the i5 HQ around

Some places selling nearly double the price! Pays to shop around!

What do you think of this one? I think it's refurbed though...

Graphics card not as good, but it's an ok price.

Possibly best to ignore this one, just came across it as a possible option.

Do CEX refurb items they buy in? I thought they just graded them & resold as is which would be a concern on a laptop as you never know what hidden extras you could be getting.

Hey, we came to the same laptop on the same sister sites... woaaaah!!! :D

When I looked at both of your replys, I didn’t even notice that I had looked at the same laptop twice on different websites. Because if that I’m just gonna take your advice and stop looking into it too much because I clearly have no idea what I’m looking at anyway...

@Jimbokav_Jr_1996 Get your Dad to stump up with some extra funds, after all he's to blame for you catching the FM bug, @bennytee alternative is an excellent choice for FM if you can manage the additional costy.

It’s alright I’m gonna get the one that @Smurf and @bennytee suggested anyway, I think I’m already being significantly less stingy than he was when he got a new laptop for FM18 so I’ll probably just not mention how much I’m gonna spend!

Cheers for all your help guys!

Hi

Posted this a few times now and no response - apologies but could do with a steer from a knowledgeable poster....

Can you advise which one is best for FM play please?

Or if you can recommend one for a similar price range  - max 1300.

I'm a fan of a refurb, got mine from LaptopsDirect a few years back i7 4710hq 17 inch HP Envy.  It was this thread that alerted me to the benefits of the H processors over U ones.  It still flies along superbly and looked more like an open-box than a refurb, not a scratch on it.

Trouble is i'm a bit cautious when it comes to recommending them to people in case they do have problems.  No doubt though my next purchase will probably be a refurb if i can get a good price and possibly a replacement battery.

Or if you can recommend one for a similar price range  - max 1300.

Both solid choices, second one has a better processor.

I also spotted this https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/asus-gl702vs-core-i7-7700hq-16gb-1tb-256gb-ssd-geforce-gtx-1070-17-inch-gl702vs-gc287t/version.asp?tduid=3cb8917397caad3b2e491c972e0f8607&utm_source=digidip+UK_2142931&utm_medium=tradedoubler

Which takes you to the next level graphics-wise but slightly over budget.

My advice at this price level is to look carefully at reviews of each laptop and see what pros and cons are for each, look for the best screen/cooling etc

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/FX504GM-EN151T-ASUS-FX504GM-EN151T-Gaming-Laptop_2344468.html

Failing that

This would be very good for 800

You might have a few more gains in a new processor - however, sacrafice a little on graphics card here - not much, and I still think you could play on full detail

Cheers Smurf, much appreciated. Had been looking at the two linked for £800 plus a couple of others around 750-800. The one at £900 looks fantastic though.

Yeh it's pretty sweet, and I'd say stump up the extra 100 if you can! It would be worth it in the long run, I'd say.

do we think this one is better than the HP Omen I linked to at PC World?

I would go for the Asus as it has double the ram on the graphics card and is £100 cheaper.

That said the plus point of the Omen is that you could just walk into your local PC World and get it there and then

The horror stories of the Surface Book 2 have really put me off, plus, I was told the Tablet itself won’t run FM all that well.

So apart from upgrading to a Surface Pro 6, it may well be the XPS 15 2 in 1...would you say that’s the best route to go for FM on a Tablet form factor? Cheers!

other people will know more than me I expect but if that is the form factor you need then it looks pretty unrivalled at that price point and will run FM really well

Hi all. I am looking for a new laptop and since FM is the only PC game I play so I need the advices from you guys

My budget is 1200$ And these are my requirements

- Good build and be able to work consistently in 2-3 years with little issue. The surface 4 I am using really a nightmare.

- good battery good keyboard and light, less than 1.5kg is ideal as I am travelling a lot and my work requires typing constantly

- Able to play FM properly, 2D and low graphic setting is ok but running the game should not lead to throttling.

- screen good enough to work outside  (IPS full HD...) no touch screen

- I don’t use camera, speaker and also don’t mind about fan noise.

Some friends suggest Dell Latitude 7490, it seems perfect except the throttling and I’m afraid of it when play FM. Thank for help.

By the use of the $ i'm guessing you aren't in the UK so i'm not too sure in terms of retailers.

The weight and form factor you require is going to lead to some sort of throttling i'm afraid, its just the nature of the beast.  FM is very system taxing so my advice would be to check reviews and look for a system that has good cooling.

Considering you want a 2 in 1 the HP Spectre x360 looks like a good option as does the Lenovo Yoga but there isn’t a lot to choose between them performance wise so it might just be down to your personal preference.

Techradar does a thorough review of all 3 here and compares similar laptop types https://www.techradar.com/uk/reviews/dell-xps-15-2-in-1

Out of the 3, the Dell appeals to me most, one of the drawbacks is the lack of USB A. Only USB C, how would I sync my iPhone?

If it was a straight contest between the Dell and the Surface Pro 6, what would you recommend?

It's not just RAM, it's everything: the processor (H is better than U), hybrid drive (vs mechanic), and the graphic card is much superior too.

True, but all I want it for is to play FM and have good graphics and a machine that runs well. Do I really need to pay the extra £250 quid? How much better an experience will that money make?

I sync mine with USB C, it works fine if I'm understanding you correctly.

They are quite different machines, to be honest, the Surface Pro is a lot smaller for a start and it will depend on your usage

The Surface Pro is more of a portable tablet come notebook with more emphasis on being carried around, while the XPS is a bulkier PC that focuses on getting even demanding tasks done. The choice one has to make between these two portable options depends largely on just how mobile they plan to be.

The Surface for instance is going to be a lot more comfortable to hold for extended periods of time.  Essentially the surface is a small tablet you can use as a full-size laptop and the XPS is a laptop you can use as a tablet

Think of it as an investment, it'll future proof you for quite a while.  I could tell you why it's worth the money but it would be pretty technical, suffice to say that for a good experience on FM you need to be looking at processors that end in HQ or H, the U processors are low-power mobile chips which affect performance.

Here are the two processors side by side before we even get into how much better the graphics are on the more expensive one

I won’t be taking it out of the house often, if ever, it’ll be my personal computer that I watch videos and play FM on.

The Dell only has the newer thin USB connection, as opposed to the older, chunkier one, I was wondering if there was an adapter perhaps? A USB Type C to Type A I believe it would be? But I could be wrong?

Cheers!

I am currently looking at getting a new laptop, mainly because mine is almost 10 years old and the battery has packed up (have to consistently plug it in and new battery is expensive).

Looking at the Acer Swift 3, looks decent with new gen 8 processor but has 1.6 ghz quad core (3.4 ghz). I am not great with computer specs, is this enough because I read the minimum specs for football manager is 2.2ghz?

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-swift-3-14-intel-core-i5-laptop-256-gb-ssd-silver-10180997-pdt.html

I would basically just be playing football manager 19 (playing 3d), browsing the internet, watching videos on youtube. Do you think this laptop would be sufficient?

Last football manager I played was 17 on my 10 year old laptop with 6gb ram and it worked ok even with 3d so I assume these new laptops will be up to scratch right?

Any help much appreciated :)

I was originally looking at this - https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/NX.GP8EK.003-Acer-Aspire-7-A715-71G-57YT_2156569.html when it was on offer for £600. It's been linked numerous times in this thread as a good option for the price, so I wont ask that question again!

Looking again this morning, with the price going up to £650 , I can get this - https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/FX504GD-DM346T-ASUS-FX504GD-DM346T-Gaming-Laptop_2387834.html for £750.

To my untrained eye, this looks better in every way (processor, RAM, graphics card), and by a considerable margin although I'd be grateful if someone could corroborate that before I purchase!

The only difference i can see is that the processor is an H, rather than a HQ, although its a new I7 rather than an I5 so i don't know whether that compensates at all.

Go for it.

Processing letters change between generation, the one with the H is an 8th gen hence why the 7th gen says HQ.

The 8th that you found for 750 is perfectly fine and better.

The thermal on the Huawei could be an issue but it always is with these ultra-portable laptops under load in FM.  I wouldn't worry about lifespan as that's what the throttling is there for.

I've got a cooling pad myself and I don't think they work tbh, I've seen no noticeable difference in temperature.

There is another option the MSI Stealth Thin GS65, its pretty expensive though but it's a gaming laptop with a full H processor and a great graphics card.  There are loads of reviews on youtube etc so see what you think.

Its pretty much the best laptop money can buy under 2kg performance-wise

Here's some reviews of thin and light gaming laptops - https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/best-thin-and-light-gaming-laptops

Mine works pretty good, if not only to keep it off the couch, off the carpets, off the dusty surfaces, bed etc.

Helps to keep the vents clear :)
