New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Can not overclock without scalping?
All the time the answers do not show what to take and what are the differences in the speed of the game between these processors.
Which is more important for FM18 - one thread or multithreading because i3 has 4 core and i6 has 6. If multithreading is important then maybe think about used i7-6700k?

Is it known at all when exactly cheaper motherboards will be made?

Ok Guys I'm down to these two. I would have to push my budget up by £50-£100

I'm thinking 1st one not sure if there's much difference between them apart from 2nd has bigger screen.

@poxy18 I7 is better than I5 and I5 is better than I3

I asked Neill Brock who asked his tech guy and this is the answer

For how the game uses threads - it will create as many threads for playing matches and shortlisting as you have cores (including hyperthreads).

But the performance you see varies on the setup for example with matches - Quick Matches for instance (so for loaded but non-managed in leagues) it's are so fast anyway it gets to the point where it doesn't make that much more difference having more cores.

If you use detail level to set more stuff to full match you'll start seeing betters gains for more cores, but of course will still be slower than by just not having the league loaded, or having it at a low detail level.

Similar sort of thing with shortlisting the more / leagues players you have loaded the more benefits you can potentially see with more cores, however this is probably more than offset by the general slowdown from having more stuff loading as there's still a large portion of the game which is single threaded.

In regards to best processors, as a general guide we tend to suggest using the following comparison site as a good gauge of the performance capabilities - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html

Basic rule of thumb is the higher it is on the list, the better it is. You can edit it to show processors for desktops and also those that are considered 'archived' via the restriction options.

The omen has bigger screen...longer battery when not plugged in and slightly better graphics card.

I'd go for the omen.

Does the integrated graphics card even though I do not watch games in 3d will not block the processor?

You can overclock but temperatures will be much higher.

Number of cores/threads is very important but single core performance/cpu clock seems to be crucial for FM. You can take a look at results in this thread:

About cheaper motherboards - i think they should release boards in next 4-6 weeks but im not sure.

Thats why i think i5-8400 is best option because you get very good single core performance and you still have 6 cores. Also no need to overclock and to buy some expensive board.

Having 6 cores is a waste for fm. One of the engineers on these forums said that only recently.

General rule of thumb...get the best you can afford.

In this case the 8400k would be the best but a good cooling system would make it even better.

This is very important information.
In that case, how many cores / threads uses maximum FM18?
It seems - as @krlenjushka wrote - that the most important is single core performance/cpu clock...
It may not be worth overpaying at all and take i3-8100 if there is no difference?

I wouldn't bother with an i3 for FM. Not a chance in the world.

Single core usage is important for FM - but there's parts of the game the rely on multi-core, like having lots of leagues active and running.

Where it might be a waste for FM - it's still a kick ass processor - I'd be going for the K processor all day.

Who knows what FM will  be like in 5 years time?

Hi Guys,

I'm after some advice on what laptop too get. I literally just want to use it for FM really as the latop i have is rather old and crashes fequently when waiting for a match too start.

I'm literally after a standard laptop like the one i have at present (brought it from Argos for like £250, 5 yrs ago). It worked like a dream for FM when i had it but with time it's just got slower.

Thanks ☺

How fast is 7700HQ when come FM game?

Completely depends on your setup of leagues divisions and database size.

What's fast for you maybe slow for someone else.

The 7770hq is a good processor though.

Hi Gents,

Purchasing a Lenovo Legion Y520 this week, my main use of my laptop is FM.

There are three different configurations, I’m wondering if the increase in price is worthy or if the £749 model will be good enough?

The specs are as follows:

£749 Model -

Intel Core i5-7300HQ Processor ( 2.50GHz 2400MHz 6MB )
Operating System
Windows 10 Home 64

Graphics
AMD RX 560 2GB GDDR5
Battery
3 Cell Li-Cylindrical
Bluetooth
Bluetooth Version 4.1
Wireless
Lenovo AC Wireless

For £899 the graphics card is updated to -
Graphics
GTX1050Ti 2G 2GB GDDR5

...and for £1099 the processor is upgraded to -

In terms of game set up  I usually just have the one league (the counry of the team I'm managing), occasionall two additional leagues. The main problem my laptop has i it takes ages to load uo a match or just crashes whilst loading. And when it's loaded the match tends to get stuck.

I probably can't find the specs of my current laptp as its 5 yrs old.

Yeah I wouldn't expect an i9 to really help in FM, unless you are setting the whole world to full detail anyway.

For 250 quid you'd be quite limited.

I'd struggle to recommend something for you.

Is 250 your max budget?

No not max.... i don't want to spend too much money on a laptop though because all I use it for is FM and i don't have the funds to buy a laptop for like 4 5 hundred quid

I'd strongly recommend this one

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/T6N58EAABU(C)-GRADE-A---HP-250-G4_2295912.html

It is a clearance product rated Grade A - https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/grading

Failing that - then this one

Sorry can't stand over any of them - but I think it would be best you can do...

If £250-300 is your budget I would go to the dell outlet store and look at the refurbs they have online. There's currently 10% off new orders as well so you can get some decent models for around your budget.

Smurf,

Any opinions on my post above?

I like the £750 model, but is it worth going to £900 as it is seemingly only for the upgraded graphics card? Or is the £1100 version well worth it for the upgraded i7 processor and graphics card!?

Thanks!

I don't what the specs are on the other models you're referring to.

The one posted looks good.

With a  budget of 1100 I'd be inclined towards this

IMO it would struggle - perhaps on minimum leagues/divisoins loaded and a small database.

Hey @Smurf

Sorry for bothering you here. Looking at a budget of €1,500. I need a laptop for Adobe Products, photoshop, illustrator, filmora etc (graphic design apps mainly) and of course FM18 (7 leagues, large database but would love to be able to load more) I looked at Macbook pro but hearing bad reviews with FM

Im looking at the HP Spectre x360 or HP Envy. Both would be i5 7th gen. Now the HP Envy has GeForce Mx150 and Spectre has HD graphics 620.

Is there much of a difference between i5 8th gen and i7 7th gen?

(They also have this on 8th gen about 200 quid more )

It's not that Macs are bad - quite the opposite - they're shiny metal boxes... with components you can buy anywhere and put together... the OS is ok... however, I find them horrendously overpriced.

I'm a graphic designer myself. And sure Macs are great, but most software works on the PC anyway.

The first 2 links you posted I feel would be underpowered for FM based on the processor - and not enough RAM for Photoshop/Illustrator and Filmora (even though min spec is 8gb).  For Photoshop I'd recommend at least 16gb of RAM (but I'm going to put 32gb into yours) as it's quite RAM intensive and you could probably use it for Filmora too more so.

Even with the Mac option you can't get a graphics card. You can't even put in 32gb RAM?

I'd recommend a PC Specialist - much better quality for money

Chassis & Display
Defiance Series: 14" Matte Full HD IPS LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™ i7 Quad Core Processor 7700HQ (2.8GHz, 3.8GHz Turbo)
Memory (RAM)
32GB Corsair 2133MHz SODIMM DDR4 (2 x 16GB)
Graphics Card
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 Ti - 4.0GB GDDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1
1st Hard Disk
1TB Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 540MB/sR | 520MB/sW)
1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB SAMSUNG PM961 M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 3000MB/R, 1700MB/W)

Price €2,146.00 including VAT and delivery

Unique URL to re-configure : https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/defianceiii-14/2bnjhTJkfy/

You can go for a smaller SSD if you want to lower the price, or reduce RAM if you want - but I wouldn't recommend lowering the RAM.

- compared to making the same Mac when configuring (considering I could only have 16gb RAM and NO GRAPHICS CARD) = €3,149.00

Is it overkill - YES - will it las tyou a long time = YES!

You can get the price down if you want - by lowering the RAM and a smaller SSD - both can be increased at a later date anyway.

Just some food for thought

I do a bit of graphic design as it's my profession - however, I rarely work on the laptop.

Some internet surfing, youtube, etc. music and all that - booking holidays etc.

Other than that it's mainly used for FM.

I'm putting together €2000 slowly to get my next machine. It's overkill, but should last me 10 years.

I would like to perhaps play other games - but I do have a playstation for that.

Plus a wife - so it's getting less and less gaming time as the years go on - sigh!

It seems you are a clone of me (Im without the hardware knowledge though)

Well that's a 15.6 inch laptop - I thought you were looking for circa 13.6 inch laptops -that's why I looked at 14 inch on PC specialist.

If you want I can go back and recommend a 15.6 inch with what you need - or a 17 inch.

Personally I prefer 17 inch or above on the laptop front for design when I'm working on the laptop.

I prefer a smaller one but for the graphic design im thinking maybe 15" (absolute max-much of my work is on the go rather than being stuck in an office enviornment) tbh Im still going to go with what you sent me but I also want to try and educate myself in the ins and outs of processors and ram.

Is the Ram and processor on the Xps the same as the one from PC specialist? Or am I way off @Smurf?

The processor is same. On the PC specialist it's double the ram.

PC specialist also has 1tb ssd and PC world has half that.

If you want I can take a closer look on Monday.

I'm off on holidays until then and prob won't be checking in much.
