New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Easily the i7 4578u - it has a base frequency of 3ghz.

There's really not that much of a difference between them all.

Order of preference

i7 4578u

i5 4308u

i5 4278u

Let me be 100% clear on the "u" processor option.

The "u" processor is a fine processor and there are certain models are perfectly fine for FM!

When you're paying +£900 for a computer then there are really high end "u" processors" that are perfect for FM.

It's when the person is asking for advice on a computer they found online and it costs say £400 - and it's a u processor, with a quick search you can find a better processor at that price.

I'm not great at finding decent laptops, but I have a budget of up to £400 and was wondering if someone could find me something decent to play FM on? It's main purpose will be for FM and I'm hoping to be able to do Journeyman saves, can spend a tad more if needed, but ideally a decent system for or under £400?

I'm in the exaxt same boat as you. Would prefer to get one with an i5 and SSD but have no idea about what sort of graphics card is needed for FM purposes.

Found this which is just over my budget http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-aspire-v3-371-13-3-laptop-white-10029103-pdt.html#cat-0

Gents,

After being away from PC gaming since FM2012 and playing only FM Handheld, I am now in a position where the missus is looking to buy a budget laptop as hers packed up just before Christmas.

She has been given PC World/Currys vouchers from the family to help with the purchase (I know its not great) so am tied to their products and has about £400 to spend.

She has turned to me for advice and all I can think of is possibility of playing FM again. I know with a budget laptop im not going to get great performance, but am looking an have narrowed it down to

I know nothing about the AMD processors in laptops are they any good? do you get more bang for buck?

Also this Intel iris gpu? is that better than the integrated HD gpu's?

Any advice on the AMD vs Intel battle would be good

How many leagues do you run? Is there much of a processing delay?

The Samsung I have is struggling with FM15 being open the same time as word and google chrome, so think it's time I upgraded. Has anyone seen any decent deals in the UK sales? I was hoping to not spend over £500 if possible, but would consider more for a great deal.

Hi guys, sorry to jump in, didn't want to create a new thread. But my boss (wife!) and I are considering a couple of things. 1 - either sell my self made computer which is pretty decent (6 core AMD, 16GB, runs FM effortlessly etc etc) and our budget laptop (Samsung i3, 4GB integrated graphics) and buying a high end laptop to replace them both (budget circa £900), or 2 - Just flog the laptop and buy a mid range but bit better laptop, would need to be able to cope with FM15 and she is partial to Heroes Of Might & Magic 6 and upcoming 7.

So I need advice. We preferably want to buy from Very so we can spread the cost, plus we have a 10% off voucher.

Option 1 - Ideally want i7, dedicated graphics, SSD drive with 1TB backup and good load of memory, or at least upgradeable. Preferably 17.3" but 15.6" acceptable. Would like decent sound. All this not essential, but desirable. Budget up to £900 but not strict, can be higher or lower but would need to last a few years.

How about any of these:

http://www.very.co.uk/electricals/laptops/17in/laptops/e/b/116392,20413,22251,4873.end?sort=price,0

Option 2 - decent mid range laptop that can cope with, say one nation in FM on large database, must have dedicated graphics, 15.6", budget maybe £400-£500. Quite happy to upgrade things in the future ie. HDD, Memory, but usually difficult/impossible to upgrade graphics and cpu.

Any of these?:

Or any others? Thanks for any advice.

I was hoping people could give me some advice as to what sort of laptop I should get? I don't have a great budget (£200-£250) however all I use my laptop for is FM. What sort of specifications should I be looking for to be able to play FM quickly? I only use the commentary mode so not that worried about the graphics but I just don't want it to be really slow (currently 1 star performance rating using only English League).

HNY guys, all the best and the usual shenanigans!

What do you guys think to this one I have found? - http://www.ebuyer.com/666609-hp-pavilion-15-laptop-k0w62ea-abu

I also thought this was pretty good: http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=20592&game=Football%20Manager%202015 - basically put the spec of the machine in and it tells you how well it will run FM2015.

Thanks in advance, appreciated.

I tried that site as I have opted for the Macbook Pro with the 2.8 ghz i5 4308u and it rated the processor as 8/10.

When I get it (hopefully next week) I will be able to gauge what to expect from 8/10 performance.

Cheers mate, I have always had a MAC, tbh was an eye opener using that site, my Macbook from 2009 (lasted brilliantly), processor was 90%, memory 400% but the graphics were at 15%, been trying to play FM15 and its like watching a game being streamed, buffering - made me feel sick!

Had a look at MacBooks, cheapest I found was £750 but when I used the above website processor was around 120%, memory again 400% but even with a brand new macbook graphics were 90%. As i said loved having MAC's but tbh all i do is browse the net/FM so reluctant to spend mega money when I can get something like - http://www.ebuyer.com/666609-hp-pavi...op-k0w62ea-abu - which comes out at processor 230%, RAM 400% and graphics 205% which should give me some longevity over the next few years.

The processor was at 250% and the 8gb Ram was just below. I didn't pay attention to the graphics as I only ever use very low details.

That macbook model was £1079 but there was a quicker i7 model that was extra.

Having said that, I won't for a second pretend that that a Macbook is a good value for money choice. I know I pay a premium for them.

Hi, Ive been looking at laptops all day every day since boxing day (slight exageration). I've narrowed it down with my very limited knowledge to two (I think).

Can anybody let me know which one is better all round, is better value for money, how future proof they will be and if I could get something just as good or better? I spent over an hour in PC world yesterday just looking and comparing and the longer I keep looking the more indecisive I get.

Any help would be massively appreciated.

Glad it's working well for you - however, many people have different setups for FM - leagues loaded and database size would impact on performance, plus if it's a long-term journyman save or just a quick dabble of 10 seasons and start over etc.

Can you let us know how many leagues you're running and the size of the database and what the performance is like when you're 5 seasons in, 10 seasons, 20 seasons etc.?

Hey guys. I'm looking for some help on purchasing a laptop with a budget of £650.

Ideally I want a laptop that will last me 4-5 years and its main purpose will be football manager.

After doing some research I came up with these two choices:

http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=J0B99EA&opt=ABU&sel=PCNB#merch-tech-specs (can get for £630)

or http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16GD11-1408-MSI-CX61-2PF-1408UK_1699913.html

I'm currently swaying towards the hp as I have limited knowledge of MSI (support, laptop reliability etc), but, any input would be greatly appreciated. Also if there any other laptops which might be more suitable?

Many thanks in advance!

MSI are excellent in quality.

They're both great machines. Not much between them. Whatever you prefer.

I'd keep it a low amount of leagues and nations, and a small-medium database.

Thanks, probably not worth it then seeing as it's sole purpose will be FM.

Thanks again for your help, Eugene. I went with the HP laptop in the end. Pretty much the same specs as the one in the post above. Gives me a 5 star performance rating and with about twenty leagues loaded i'm still at about 3 stars for speed. It's exactly what I was hoping for in that regard. So to the person asking about that laptop I would say that at least in terms of FM performance it does pretty well.

I was thinking though, would it be smarter to load about ten leagues and then add or remove leagues as I go along? Haven't played FM since FM 2011 so I'm not sure how well adding leagues works for long term journeyman saves.

Link to post

Over long term saves performance degrades. So setting up with a good amount really helps in that regard.

If long term, 50, 100 year saves, don't tickle your fancy then consider more leagues and database players.

You'll find a balance for yourself.
