New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

'That's probably the best you're going to get. Or you can try this one:

http://www.ebuyer.com/614850-lenovo-...aptop-59406141

Bit cheaper and a newer model. But you might have to upgrade the RAM after a year or two.

What I always tell people though is that if you don't spend the money now, you'll need to replace it sooner. But you sound like you need it now, so pick the best you can.'

Thanks for that, any other advice welcome.... out of those 2 which would you recommend?

If it's only for FM, probably take the acer.

Hi

Im pretty clued up on computers/laptops and specs but clearly not as much as some on here. BUt im looking for any good deals basically that will run FM well.

I only have a small budget as its going on the credit card so want to be sensible. Max ideally would be £400 tops but i keep seeing this Acer i7 for 489, really dont want to spend that much so any other good deals out there?

Currently looking at

What do people think, anything better available for similar prices or a little more?

Those all look like pretty good deals. Hard to choose since there are upsides to each one. In terms of processing power the i5-3210m is the best, and the other two would be similar, maybe the amd a10-5757 slightly better. The i5-4200U is the newest and gives the best battery life. That machine also has the most RAM if you're a multitasker. I think you'd be safe with any of the choices tbh.

Or maybe one of these?

Sorry for blowing the thread up but im not very good at deciding. Especially when we are talking about a lot of money!

any of these?

You're choosing some very unconventional CPUs for a budget laptop. You'll want to look for something that can handle decent graphics performance. Because, for $500 you probably won't be getting a decent, or any kind of dedicated graphics card. If I were you, I would maybe buy this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HIYA9ZM/ref=pd_aw_sbs_1?pi=SS115

And then look to upgrade the RAM some time in the future.

I can run this fairly decently on my Bay Trail tablet. Graphics will be on the lowest settings and loading/save times can be a bit long due to the internal storage using emmc rather than a proper hard drive or SSD, but its surprisingly playable performance wise for a 60,000 person database.

Point is, as long as you have a relatively recent Intel CPU - think i3/i5 3XXXX or better (the 4XXX - better battery life) it should be fine. After that, you should consider things like RAM (min 4gb), screen resolution (a lot of cheaper laptops come with 1366 x 768 which is low) where the higher the resolution, the more stuff you can fit onto the screen and depending on price, a SSD to make load and save times much faster.

These laptops use pretty standard batteries. The cheapest and fastest way to get a new one would be to go to a nearby laptop repair store and show them the one you have. Otherwise you may have to deal with shipping fees and unreliable service.

Right guys,

I am after a new laptop. I will be using it mainly for FM, but also CIV 5 and general work use.

I am going to strip the RAM 8GB DDR3 and the 256gig SSD I have on my current machine and use them in the new one. So I am looking for

A 15-16 inch screen

8GB Ram (Expandable to 16GB) My current RAM should be compatible, but if not 8GB will be enough anyway.

500gb Hard Drive (I'll stick the O/S on the SSD and boot from there) (Just trimming the budget here, but I have coped with a 256gig ssd to date!)

Obviously I'll need a 2ndd HDD bay included, or at the very least a swap out for the optical drive.

As much processing power as possible with an £800 - £850 budget!

I already have windows 7 professional non OEM so if someone knows where I can get a software free laptop with the associated cost savings that'd be great!

I would also like a 2gb Nvidia graphics card, but would be willing to try a different brand if I can be convinced of it's reliability and performance with Civ V and FM

I would also like something that is very good at being cooled as I think the extra ram and SSD in my current laptop has caused heating problems so need to bear this in mind.

I used to be fairly clued up on this, but I have totally lost track of prices recently and trying the different search terms on websites I can't seem to find much and prices are varying hugely! My budget is about £800 so if anyone else can find something, let me know and you will have my eternal gratitude.

Yes but 3D matches will likely not be possible. If you don't own this laptop already, I suggest you don't buy it unless it is very cheap. If you do, I suggest you play this year's edition with it and see if you enjoy it, then buy a new machine when the next game comes out.

Hello,

So it may be time this year to let go of my 7 year old toshiba I inherited from my bro in law.

I am getting a feel for the laptops available around the £400 mark, could any of you nice chaps take a squint over this link to let me know if this is decent enough for its price.

Given my current laptop maxes at 2gb ram, a integrated intel 358mb shared graphics chip and Intel Dual Core I am certain this will be fairly quick in comparison.

Is this laptop well worth the money, or could I get something the same/better for cheaper?

If you had to get something from that website, get this: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Cube-CZ10-CB-A77H7-752AS_1557992.html. It has a 1920x1080 display which is probably way more important since any decent new laptop will run FM fine.

To quote myself again:

I can run this fairly decently on my Bay Trail tablet. Graphics will be on the lowest settings and loading/save times can be a bit long due to the internal storage using emmc rather than a proper hard drive or SSD, but its surprisingly playable performance wise for a 60,000 person database.

Yeah, there you go! I doubt you would need 16 GB ram, certainly not for FM, and that's the only difference I see between the two.

I don't think you would notice much difference between the two CPUs either, so that one looks like a good option: CPU comparison.

Sorry to be the 500th person asking for laptop advice but just thought I could be cheeky and tag on to this. Is this laptop any good for fm14. Is the i3 processor too outdated? From reading this the intel core processors seem to be the ones recommended....

Hey, I didnt want to create a new thread for my question, so il just ask it here.

Im about to buy new PC(Yes i know its not laptop, but i didnt want to create new thread) So, i wanted to ask if i use I5 4670k And Nvidia GTX 770 GPU and 8GB Ram, how many Leagues could i run and without game getting too slow. Also im planning to get 1TB HDD and SLI motherboard and Win7.

Sorry if there is any mistakes, English isnt my main language.

Link to post

That would be right up there, Slazenger. You could improve it and spend a bit more, but in terms of value for money you are spot on. You won't need a GTX 770 for FM at all, but I assume you have other plans for it too.

I'd seriously consider getting a SSD as well. I recently got one and the difference is massive, but it admittedly doesn't mean much for FM (apart from saving and loading).

Link to post

Thanks For your answer Eple. I know i thought myself aswell that i should get SSD but im on a tight budget hence it isnt priority, in future i will surely buy one.

As for GTX 770, Yeah i wanted a GPU I could use for other gaming aswell.

I knew it would run FM14 well, but im that kind of guy who likes to load as much leagues as i can :). My old laptop i could run about 2-3 Leagues and game was already slow, so i didnt even buy FM14 Yet.

But what you think what would be better to use, if i pay a bit more?

Link to post

The 4770k has 8 threads vs 4670k's 4 threads, so it is better. I don't know if it makes much of a difference for FM. If you do video encoding and other heavy stuff I'd consider that one. For gaming I think the difference is negligible and not worth the money.

If 2-3 leagues are slow on your old one I think it's gonna be a massive step up in performance for you. I haven't experimented with how many leagues I can run, so I wouldn't know. I've only got the i5-2500 and the game runs very quickly.

I'm running 5 leagues (10 divisions) + all international players (total amount around 40k). This save was started with a core2duo 3.3Ghz, and it ran quite good. Now it's quite a bit faster, but I'm assuming I can easily double that and not notice.

Link to post

I Really doesn't do video encoding and such stuff, i only use it maybe for school work. (word, etc)

So i guess i will just stay with 4670K, Later on i will buy SSD and im good to go.

Thanks for your help man, really appreciate it.

Yeah i will be putting it together myself, will be my first build :). Been saving alot to get a normal machine i can use. I wanted to collect more tho, For high end PC but it will take too long and im already so done with my old laptop. Cant even surf normally in internet without freezes.

What are you using it for besides FM? As a notebook maybe it would be okay, but for the game it would be one of the slowest you can get these days.

* It has a battery conserving CPU. Compared with a higher end CPU. Just to highlight the difference.. not saying you should get that one as I assume it's pricey.

* Small resolution

* Slow hard drive

* Nondescript RAM (only specifies type not hrz)

Well not really anything other than fm I would just use it to browse the internet or watch movies. As you can tell I dont know a great deal about this stuff. Are there maybe general specs that I should be looking for that would allow me to run fm at a fairly good speed?

Link to post

Yes, primarily FM needs CPU-power. So look for a Quad (4 cores). Typically they have the MQ-tag in their name.

An SSD instead of a mechanical hard drive would generally improve performance, but perhaps not for FM. You see a big difference in start up time for the PC and programs. If not an SSD, look for rpm. The one you picked out had a hard drive with 5400 rpm, but 7200 rpm is quite common too.

For RAM look for DDR3-1600.

Resolution I guess is personal preference, but I'd look for HD (height=1080px)

Just a small update on laptop specs:

The inbuilt HD4000 graphics is not good enough to run 3D matches in full detail, especially if you are multitasking.

I am using a computer with i7 3630QM processor, 8GB RAM and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M with 2GB GDDR5 RAM.

What happened was that I was watching a video and doing some browsing while playing the game as I always would. The game would progress quickly but then whenever I played a match the computer fans would get really loud and the 3D match engine would lag. I realized that the graphics card was not being used during gameplay because the game is run by the CPU by default. I switched it to run on discreet graphics and now runs like butter.

So two things: 1) CPU is not enough for multitasking during FM and to get a "full" experience you may wish to consider a discrete graphics card, and 2) if you find the game lagging you should maybe check to make sure it is being run on the graphics card instead of the CPU.

Also, buying a MacBook is a perfectly legitimate pathway to playing FM, that's why SI develop for it. We should be careful of the way we behave on a help thread lest we drive away people who had real concerns about their gaming experience on a Mac.

Called into Cash Conv earlier, ATM iv got a Aspire Aspire Z5700 - one of those touch screen all in one pcs now on the surface the specs not bad its an I5 proc, 3gig ram, 1tb hdd etc... however it has the dreaded intel GMA graphics BUT on this machine they are particular poor scoring a 3.7 on the windows rating.

Had a little look at the laptops and boom they didnt realise what they had, HP Elitebook I5 proc (but this is the M version not the U that my acer has), 8 GIG of ram installed, intel graphics - BUT i checked the windows scoring system on it and the lowest score was 6.0, its an absolute menace of a laptop only small at 12" screen but the thing is relentlessly quick and has the ability to play FM at a much better speed and graphics capability than my Acer - deposit down!

If you are referring to what I said, someone asked me a question and I gave a personal opinion. I never said that Mac's were useless or anything, just the fact that I can't stand them personally and I don't see how that could be an issue to anyone.

Won't reply any further but people have asked about MacBooks in this thread before, and we want to invite everyone who wants to play FM to come and ask their questions without going away feeling more confused than when they came. For example, they might think their 2013 MacBook Pro can't play the game because they are "horrible" so they go out and waste their money (even more, in some people's opinion). You're very welcome and encouraged to help out anywhere you can, but I've spent the last ten pages helping people pick a laptop to play their games on and if you read back, people are not as technically knowledgeable as you are and can get confused very easily.

Seeing as I'd be paying the exact same price, what is more important, the screen resolution or the processor???

On one hand you have...

Intel® Core™ i7-4700MQ Quad Core (2.4 GHz, Intel Haswell Architecture, Features Intel Turbo Boost up to 3.4GHz)

&

15.6" (1366 x 768 HD Resolution, Matte Screen)

And then on the other hand you have...

Intel Core i5-4200M Dual Core (2.5GHz, Intel Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz)

&

15.6" (1920x1080 Full HD Resolution, Glossy Screen)

Wouldn't the i7 outperform the i5 rather easily, considering the i5 is only dual core and the i7 is quad core?

That's an interesting question. For some games, you reach diminishing returns as you move from i5 to i7. From what I can tell though (http://softtalkblog.com/2011/02/22/how-football-manager-uses-multicore/), because FM is based on a lot of number crunching, which is something that having more cores would benefit from. If this is the case, then maybe AMD chipsets may perhaps give better performance for FM even though they tend to be clocked at lower speeds.

If I were you, I'd try to get the best of both worlds and have a 1080p screen and the i7. if not though, I'd pick the i7 and output the computer to an external monitor. I'm a bit of a desktop replacement kind of guy, so I keep it on a cooling stand connected to everything on my table.

I have both an SSD and a mechanical HDD, and I believe that loading and saving the game is faster on the SSD. Also, if you use custom graphics packages, having an SSD may decrease loading time.

RAm usage for me barely ever hits over 40%. I have 8GB RAM and often have several programs open at once. I reckon 4GB might work. Main bottleneck is definitely CPU, and you can scale down graphics details to get a smooth 3D match engine experience.

Link to post

I decided on...

i7 Quad Core

16GB Ram

Nvidia GeForce 2GB Dedicated

When you install the graphics card and use the NVIDIA preference settings, remember to manually set FM to run on dedicated graphics instead of CPU, which is the default. Otherwise the 3D match will appear jittery.

  • 2 weeks later...

My PC has been broke for about 3 months now and with me about to start a new job I want to get a new laptop to solely play Football Manager and chat to friends on steam chat. I was wondering if any of yous played FM on laptops and wanted to know what laptops you would reccomend to play FM on?

I want to be able to load many nations and leagues and run as large a database i possibly can but I also want to be able to play long term saves and also avoid slow loading times, so i would want my new laptop to be able to load quickly as so i can have a quick playing time as when I used to play FM on my PC i could only load 2 leagues and one country as my poc was 8 years old riddled with viruses and i found the very slow time to play the game as a put off to actually playing.

My budget would not be massive but I would not mind paying up to £900-£1000 as long as the laptop was good quality.

Thanks and I hope you can Help

Ok so my laptop finally bit the dust today and will need to replace it. Being that money is tight at the moment I am looking at these options from the weekly payment catalogue, bear in mind this means prices will be around 25-30% higher than if I bought something in store.

http://www.littlewoods.com/lenovo-g500-intelreg-coretrade-i3-processor-6gb-ram-1tb-hard-drive-wi-fi-156-inch-laptop-black/1354381268.prd

Although it doesn't state exact processor I'm pretty sure it runs on i3-3110m

Or 2nd option

Am trying to decide if option two is worth the extra money (£500 compared to £380), also will these specs run FM at a good pace, I normally use main leagues English Prem to. League 2 and top divisions of Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Holland, Scotland with say 40k database size.

Other question is being these run on ivy bridge processor released back end of 2012 (I did some small research but am not knowledgable), would this mean they are or will be outdated quickly?

Any help appreciated guys :)

Hey guys,

Sorry to be a nuisance by making my first post a tech request and please accept my assurances that any mistake on my part in posting this here is a genuine mistake rather than a failure to read the FAQ's and use the search feature - having a look around I couldn't find a specific area or a recent thread that wouldn't involve a big bump. I'm looking to get a new laptop and a primary concern is how well it will run FM14, I've been looking at an Acer Aspire with the following specs:

CPU, Memory and Operating System:

Intel Core i5 3210M dual core processor.

2.5GHz processor speed.

4GB RAM.

500GB hard drive.

Display features:

Graphics:

Intel HD Graphics.

Dedicated graphics card.

To help you advise - how well the 3D match engine will function is not a concern to me as I largely tend to play my matches in 2D classic, I'm more interested in knowing whether I will be able to smoothly and quickly run a medium/large amount of leagues with a large database?

Cheers in advance and sorry again if this in the wrong place! Look forward to participating in this forum on a regular basis once I'm up and running.

Edit: Much deserved facepalm, thank you kindly to the mod that moved this!
